Abstract Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is an endogenous oxidant and chlorinating agent in mammals that is effective against a broad range of microorganisms. However, the effects of exogenous HOCl on biological processes have not been reported. In this study, the effects of highly purified slightly acidic hypochlorous acid water (HP-HAW) were investigated. After the safety of oral administration of HP-HAW was confirmed, the effects of HP-HAW on glucose homeostasis were assessed in mice. HP-HAW treatment significantly improved blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic condition. Based on the 16S rRNA sequencing, HP-HAW treatment significantly increased the diversity and changed the composition of gut microbiota by decreasing the abundance of genus Romboutsia in mice fed normal chow. In obese mice, HP-HAW administration tended to improve glucose tolerance. HP-HAW also attenuated memory impairments and changes N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor mRNA expression in obese mice. HP-HAW treatment suppressed Il-6 mRNA expression in the hippocampus in type 2 diabetic mice. Overall, these results support HP-HAW as a potential therapeutic agent to improve or prevent glucose tolerance and memory decline via gut microbiota alteration.

ABSTRACT 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis is used to investigate bacterial communities; however, the estimated bacterial composition can differ from the original due to experimental and analytical biases. Therefore, this study determines the optimal conditions to minimize the potential biases in 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis using different DNA samples, trimming lengths, primers, and databases. The results of the mock1 community with 250 and 300 bp paired-end (PE), comprising 15 bacteria from various environments, showed the highest similarity between the theoretical value and the data using the Greengenes2 and the V3 region at the genus level and V5–V6 at the species level. In the 300 bp PE sequencing analysis of the mock2 community, comprising six major oral bacteria, the data using the V3–V4, V4, and V5–V6 regions with the SILVA, Greengenes2, and the Human Oral Microbiome Database (HOMD) showed the highest similarity to the theoretical values at the genus level. At the species level, the data using the V3–V4 and V4 regions with Greengenes2 and the data using the V1–V2 with HOMD exhibited the highest alignment with the theoretical values. In the species analysis of the dental calculus samples with 300 bp PE, the Shannon index value was higher with the V1–V2 region and HOMD than with others. Our results suggest that the optimal conditions for oral microbiome analysis are the combinations of 300 bp PE and the V3–V4 or V4 region with the Greengenes2 and the V1–V2 with HOMD.IMPORTANCEThe 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis is frequently used in oral microbiome research. However, this method can have biases that distort the experimental data, which depend on the methodological steps, including sequencing length, trimming length, selected amplification regions, and referenced databases. In this study, a combination of 300 bp PE and the primer targeting the V3–V4 or V4 regions with the Greengenes2 and the V1–V2 region with the HOMD was the most bias-minimizing condition for oral microbiota analysis. In addition, this is the first report of such analyses in modern Japanese dental calculus. The methods used in this study will aid in setting appropriate conditions for sequence analysis of microbiota obtained not only from the oral cavity but also from any environment.

Direct metal Ni and Cu coatings were formed on various substrates using a metal-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) complex solution followed by treatment with a high-heat hydrogen/oxygen (H2–O2) coupled flame. Mortar, alumina, and SUS304 were used to control the thermal histories of the samples. The formation of the metal phases was depended on the thermal history, especially the cooling rate after heat treatment. In addition, the oxidation of the formed metals was demonstrated by increasing the number of heat treatments. Hence, the obtained results indicated that metal coating by the combined application of metal-EDTA complex solutions and high-heat treatment via a hydrogen/oxygen coupled flame was accomplished.

Peri-implant diseases, such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, are induced by dysbiotic microbiota resulting in the inflammatory destruction of peri-implant tissue. Nonetheless, there has yet to be an established protocol for the treatment of these diseases in a predictable manner, although many clinicians and researchers have proposed various treatment modalities for their management. With the increase in the number of reports evaluating the efficacy of various treatment modalities and new materials, the use of multiple decontamination methods to clean infected implant surfaces is recommended; moreover, the use of hard tissue laser and/or air abrasion techniques may prove advantageous in the future. Limited evidence supports additional effects on clinical improvement in antimicrobial administration for treating peri-implantitis. Implantoplasty may be justified for decontaminating the implant surfaces in the supracrestal area. Surgical treatment is employed for advanced peri-implantitis, and appropriate surgical methods, such as resection therapy or combination therapy, should be selected based on bone defect configuration. This review presents recent clinical advances in debridement methods for contaminated implant surfaces and regenerative materials for treating peri-implant bone defects. It also proposes a new flowchart to guide the treatment decisions for peri-implant disease.

The optimal method for decontamination of implant surfaces for peri-implantitis treatment remains controversial. In recent years, erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation and implantoplasty (IP) (i.e. mechanical modification of the implant) have been reported to be effective in decontaminating implant surfaces during the surgical treatment. Also, a lack of adequate keratinized mucosa (KM) around the implant is known to be associated with more plaque accumulation, tissue inflammation, attachment loss, and mucosal recession, increasing the risk of peri-implantitis. Therefore, free gingival graft (FGG) has been recommended for gaining adequate KM around the implant. However, the necessity of acquiring KM for the treatment of peri-implantitis using FGG remains unclear. In this report, we applied the apically positioned flap (APF) as resective surgery for peri-implantitis treatment in conjunction with IP and Er:YAG laser irradiation to polish/clean the implant surface. Furthermore, FGG was conducted simultaneously to create additional KM, which increased the tissue stability and contributed to the positive results. The two patients were 64 and 63 years old with a history of periodontitis. The removal of granulation tissue and debridement of contaminated implant surfaces were performed with Er:YAG laser irradiation post flap elevation and then modified smooth surfaces mechanically using IP. Er:YAG laser irradiation was also utilized to remove the titanium particles. In addition, we performed FGG to increase the width of KM as a vestibuloplasty. Peri-implant tissue inflammation and progressive bone resorption were not observed, and both patients maintained good oral hygiene conditions until the 1-year follow-up appointment. Bacterial analysis via high-throughput sequencing revealed proportional decreases in bacteria associated with periodontitis ( Porphyromonas , Treponema , and Fusobacterium ). To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to describe peri-implantitis management and bacterial change before and after procedures by resective surgery combined with IP and Er:YAG laser irradiation for peri-implantitis treatment, accompanied by FGG for increasing KM around the implants.

We present 2 cases that both developed infective endocarditis and underwent mitral valve replacement. In addition to positive blood culture and echocardiographic findings, such as vegetation or mitral valve perforation, the 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequence approach used was helpful for disease diagnosis. Soft tissue adhesion and sealing around dental and maxillofacial implants, related prosthetic components, and crowns are a clinical imperative to prevent adverse outcomes of periodontitis and periimplantitis. Zirconia is often used to fabricate implant components and crowns. Here, we hypothesized that UV treatment of zirconia would induce unique behaviors in fibroblasts that favor the establishment of a soft tissue seal. Human oral fibroblasts were cultured on zirconia specimens to confluency before placing a second zirconia specimen (either untreated or treated with one minute of 172 nm vacuum UV (VUV) light) next to the first specimen separated by a gap of 150 µm. After seven days of culture, fibroblasts only transmigrated onto VUV-treated zirconia, forming a 2.36 mm volume zone and 5.30 mm leading edge. Cells migrating on VUV-treated zirconia were enlarged, with robust formation of multidirectional cytoplastic projections, even on day seven. Fibroblasts were also cultured on horizontally placed and 45° and 60° tilted zirconia specimens, with the latter configurations compromising initial attachment and proliferation. However, VUV treatment of zirconia mitigated the negative impact of tilting, with higher tilt angles increasing the difference in cellular behavior between control and VUV-treated specimens. Fibroblast size, perimeter, and diameter on day seven were greater than on day one exclusively on VUV-treated zirconia. VUV treatment reduced surface elemental carbon and induced superhydrophilicity, confirming the removal of the hydrocarbon pellicle. Similar effects of VUV treatment were observed on glazed zirconia specimens with silica surfaces. One-minute VUV photofunctionalization of zirconia and silica therefore promotes human oral fibroblast attachment and proliferation, especially under challenging culture conditions, and induces specimen-to-specimen transmigration and sustainable photofunctionalization for at least seven days.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of administration of xanthan gum-based fluid thickener on the regulation of postprandial blood glucose level, gene expression in the gastrointestinal tract, and gut microbiome. Six-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: with (Th group) and without (Co group) the administration of a xanthan gum-based fluid thickener for 5 wks. Blood glucose levels at 60 and 90 min after glucose administration were substantially decreased in the Th group. Glp1 and Glp1r expression in the ileum was significantly upregulated after continuous administration of thickener. RNA-seq analysis revealed that the cholesterol homeostasis, fatty acid metabolism, and glycolysis gene sets were enriched in the ileum of Th group. Microbial composition in the gut was altered after administrating the fluid thickener, and relative abundance in Erysipelotrichales and Christensenellaceae showed positive correlation with Glp1 and Glp1r expression in the ileum. Xanthan gum-based fluid thickener may ameliorate glucose/lipid metabolism.

Nanoporous carbon (NPC) with high hydrogen storage capacity was fabricated from rice husk. The rice husk was activated using KOH, and the cooling step during the KOH activation process was varied. The specific surface areas, pore size distributions, and hydrogen storage capacities of the fabricated NPC samples were determined. We found that while the specific surface area did not change with the choice of the cooling process, the pore size distribution did. Furthermore, in the case of rapid cooling, the maximum hydrogen storage capacity at 77 K was 7.2 wt%, while that for natural cooling was 5.5 wt%. Thus, it can be concluded that the cooling procedure used during the KOH activation process determines the hydrogen storage properties of the thus-fabricated NPC materials.

Light-cured composite resins are widely used in dental restorations to fill cavities and fabricate temporary crowns. After curing, the residual monomer is a known to be cytotoxic, but increasing the curing time should improve biocompatibility. However, a biologically optimized cure time has not been determined through systematic experimentation. The objective of this study was to examine the behavior and function of human gingival fibroblasts cultured with flowable and bulk-fill composites cured for different periods of time, while considering the physical location of the cells with regard to the materials. Biological effects were separately evaluated for cells in direct contact with, and in close proximity to, the two composite materials. Curing time varied from the recommended 20 s to 40, 60, and 80 s. Pre-cured, milled-acrylic resin was used as a control. No cell survived and attached to or around the flowable composite, regardless of curing time. ABSTRACT Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition caused by polymicrobial infection. The inflammation is initiated at the gingiva (gingivitis) and then extends to the alveolar bone, leading to tooth loss (periodontitis). Previous studies have shown differences in bacterial composition between periodontal healthy and diseased sites. However, bacterial metabolic activities during the health-to-periodontitis microbiome shift are still inadequately understood. This study was performed to investigate the bacterial characteristics of healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis statuses through metatranscriptomic analysis. Subgingival plaque samples of healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis sites in the same oral cavity were collected from 21 patients. Bacterial compositions were then determined based on 16S rRNA reads; taxonomic and functional profiles derived from genes based on mRNA reads were estimated. The results showed clear differences in bacterial compositions and functional profiles between healthy and periodontitis sites. Co-occurrence networks were constructed for each group by connecting two bacterial species if their mRNA abundances were positively correlated. The clustering coefficient values were 0.536 for healthy, 0.600 for gingivitis, and 0.371 for periodontitis sites; thus, network complexity increased during gingivitis development, whereas it decreased during progression to periodontitis. Taxa, including Eubacterium nodatum, Eubacterium saphenum, Filifactor alocis, and Fretibacterium fastidiosum, showed greater transcriptional activities than those of red complex bacteria, in conjunction with disease progression. These taxa were associated with periodontal disease progression, and the health-to-periodontitis microbiome shift was accompanied by alterations in bacterial network structure and complexity. IMPORTANCE The characteristics of the periodontal microbiome influence clinical periodontal status. Gingivitis involves reversible gingival inflammation without alveolar bone resorption. In contrast, periodontitis is an irreversible disease characterized by inflammatory destruction in both soft and hard tissues. An imbalance of the microbiome is present in both gingivitis and periodontitis. However, differences in microbiomes and their functional activities in the healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis statuses are still inadequately understood. Furthermore, some inflamed gingival statuses do not consistently cause attachment loss. In this study, metatranscriptomic analyses were used to investigate the specific bacterial composition and gene expression patterns of the microbiomes of the healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis statuses. In addition, co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the gingivitis site included features of networks observed in both the healthy and periodontitis sites. These results provide transcriptomic evidence to support gingivitis as an intermediate state between the healthy and periodontitis statuses.

Implant provisional restorations should ideally be nontoxic to the contacting and adjacent tissues, create anatomical and biophysiological stability, and establish a soft tissue seal through interactions between prosthesis, soft tissue, and alveolar bone. However, there is a lack of robust, systematic, and fundamental data to inform clinical decision making. Here we systematically explored the biocompatibility of fibroblasts and osteoblasts in direct contact with, or close proximity to, provisional restoration materials. Human gingival fibroblasts and osteoblasts were cultured on the “contact” effect and around the “proximity” effect with various provisional materials: bis-acrylic, composite, self-curing acrylic, and milled acrylic, with titanium alloy as a bioinert control. The number of fibroblasts and osteoblasts surviving and attaching to and around the materials varied considerably depending on the material, with milled acrylic the most biocompatible and similar to titanium alloy, followed by self-curing acrylic and little to no attachment on or around bis-acrylic and composite materials. Milled and self-curing acrylics similarly favored subsequent cellular proliferation and physiological functions such as collagen production in fibroblasts and alkaline phosphatase activity in osteoblasts. Neither fibroblasts nor osteoblasts showed a functional phenotype when cultured with bis-acrylic or composite. By calculating a biocompatibility index for each material, we established that fibroblasts were more resistant to the cytotoxicity induced by most materials in direct contact, however, the osteoblasts were more resistant when the materials were in close proximity. In conclusion, there was a wide variation in the cytotoxicity of implant provisional restoration materials ranging from lethal and tolerant to near inert, and this cytotoxicity may be received differently between the different cell types and depending on their physical interrelationships.

Bone cement containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as a polymerization initiator are commonly used to fix orthopedic metal implants. However, toxic complications caused by bone cement are a clinically significant problem. Poly (methyl methacrylate) tri-n-butylborane (PMMA-TBB), a newly developed material containing TBB as a polymerization initiator, was found to be more biocompatible than conventional PMMA-BPO bone cements due to reduced free radical generation during polymerization. However, free radicals might not be the only determinant of cytotoxicity. Here, we evaluated the response and functional phenotypes of cells exposed to extracts derived from different bone cements. Bone cement extracts were prepared from two commercial PMMA-BPO cements and an experimental PMMA-TBB. Rat bone marrow-derived osteoblasts and osteoclasts were cultured in a medium supplemented with bone cement extracts. More osteoblasts survived and attached to the culture dish with PMMA-TBB extract than in the culture with PMMA-BPO extracts. Osteoblast proliferation and differentiation were higher in the culture with PMMA-TBB extract. The number of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells was significantly lower in the culture with PMMA-TBB extract. There was no difference in osteoclast-related gene expression in response to different bone cement extracts. In conclusion, PMMA-TBB extract was less toxic to osteoblasts than PMMA-BPO extracts. Although extracts from the different cement types did not affect osteoclast function, PMMA-TBB extract seemed to reduce osteoclastogenesis, a possible further advantage of PMMA-TBB cement. These implied that the reduced radical generation during polymerization is not the only determinant for the improved biocompatibility of PMMA-TBB and that the post-polymerization chemical elution may also be important.

Ultraviolet (UV) photofunctionalization counteracts the biological aging of titanium to increase the bioactivity and osseointegration of titanium implants. However, UV photofunctionalization currently requires long treatment times of between 12 min and 48 h, precluding routine clinical use. Here, we tested the ability of a novel, xenon excimer lamp emitting 172 nm vacuum UV (VUV) to decompose organic molecules coated on titanium as a surrogate of photofunctionalization. Methylene blue as a model organic molecule was coated on grade 4 commercially pure titanium and treated with four UV light sources: (i) ultraviolet C (UVC), (ii) high-energy UVC (HUVC), (iii) proprietary UV (PUV), and (iv) VUV. After one minute of treatment, VUV decomposed 57% of methylene blue compared with 2%, 36%, and 42% for UVC, HUVC, and PUV, respectively. UV dose-dependency testing revealed maximal methylene blue decomposition with VUV within one minute. Equivalent decomposition was observed on grade 5 titanium alloy specimens, and placing titanium specimens in quartz ampoules did not compromise efficacy. Methylene blue was decomposed even on polymethyl methacrylate acrylic specimens at 20–25% lower efficiency than on titanium specimens, indicating a relatively small contribution of titanium dioxide-mediated photocatalytic decomposition to the total decomposition. Load-testing revealed that VUV maintained high efficacy of methylene blue decomposition regardless of the coating density, whereas other UV light sources showed low efficacy with thin coatings and plateauing efficacy with thicker coatings. This study provides foundational data on rapid and efficient VUV-mediated organic decomposition on titanium. In synergy with quartz ampoules used as containers, VUV has the potential to overcome current technical challenges hampering the clinical application of UV photofunctionalization.

Vertical bone augmentation to create host bone prior to implant placement is one of the most challenging regenerative procedures. The objective of this study is to evaluate the capacity of a UV-photofunctionalized titanium microfiber scaffold to recruit osteoblasts, generate intra-scaffold bone, and integrate with host bone in a vertical augmentation model with unidirectional, limited blood supply. Scaffolds were fabricated by molding and sintering grade 1 commercially pure titanium microfibers (20 μm diameter) and treated with UVC light (200–280 nm wavelength) emitted from a low-pressure mercury lamp for 20 min immediately before experiments. The scaffolds had an even and dense fiber network with 87% porosity and 20–50 mm inter-fiber distance. Surface carbon reduced from 30% on untreated scaffold to 10% after UV treatment, which corresponded to hydro-repellent to superhydrophilic conversion. Vertical infiltration testing revealed that UV-treated scaffolds absorbed 4-, 14-, and 15-times more blood, water, and glycerol than untreated scaffolds, respectively. In vitro, four-times more osteoblasts attached to UV-treated scaffolds than untreated scaffolds three hours after seeding. On day 2, there were 70% more osteoblasts on UV-treated scaffolds. Fluorescent microscopy visualized confluent osteoblasts on UV-treated microfibers two days after seeding but sparse and separated cells on untreated microfibers. Alkaline phosphatase activity and osteocalcin gene expression were significantly greater in osteoblasts grown on UV-treated microfiber scaffolds. In an in vivo model of vertical augmentation on rat femoral cortical bone, the interfacial strength between innate cortical bone and UV-treated microfiber scaffold after two weeks of healing was double that observed between bone and untreated scaffold. Morphological and chemical analysis confirmed seamless integration of the innate cortical and regenerated bone within microfiber networks for UV-treated scaffolds. These results indicate synergy between titanium microfiber scaffolds and UV photofunctionalization to provide a novel and effective strategy for vertical bone augmentation.

Periodontal regenerative treatment is useful for intrabony defects and furcation involvement, but is difficult when there is insufficient keratinized mucosa to cover and maintain the regenerative material, particularly in the mandibular molar region. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman who underwent a two-stage surgical approach for a class II furcation defect with gingival recession and insufficient keratinized mucosal width (KMW) and vestibular depth at the mandibular left first molar. We first improved the KMW and keratinized mucosal thickness using an epithelial embossed connective tissue graft with enamel matrix derivative, and then focused on periodontal regeneration at the furcation defect using an enamel matrix derivative and a bovine-derived xenograft. Probing depth reduction, clinical attachment gain, horizontal probing depth reduction, KMW gain, and gingival recession reduction were observed 3 years postoperatively. This case report suggests that this novel staged approach may be effective for treating furcation defects with insufficient keratinized mucosa, thus providing useful insights into periodontal regeneration therapy.

Ancient dental calculus, formed from dental plaque, is a rich source of ancient DNA and can provide information regarding the food and oral microbiology at that time. Genomic analysis of dental calculus from Neanderthals has revealed the difference in bacterial composition of oral microbiome between Neanderthals and modern humans. There are few reports investigating whether the pathogenic bacteria of periodontitis, a polymicrobial disease induced in response to the accumulation of dental plaque, were different between ancient and modern humans. This study aimed to compare the bacterial composition of the oral microbiome in ancient and modern human samples and to investigate whether lifestyle differences depending on the era have altered the bacterial composition of the oral microbiome and the causative bacteria of periodontitis. Additionally, we introduce a novel diagnostic approach for periodontitis in ancient skeletons using micro-computed tomography. Ancient 16S rDNA sequences were obtained from 12 samples at the Unko-in site (18th-19th century) of the Edo era (1603–1867), a characteristic period in Japan when immigrants were not accepted. Furthermore, modern 16S rDNA data from 53 samples were obtained from a database to compare the modern and ancient microbiome. The microbial co-occurrence network was analyzed based on 16S rDNA read abundance. Eubacterium species, Mollicutes species, and Treponema socranskii were the core species in the Edo co-occurrence network. The co-occurrence relationship between Actinomyces oricola and Eggerthella lenta appeared to have played a key role in causing periodontitis in the Edo era. However, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. vincentii, and Prevotella pleuritidis were the core and highly abundant species in the co-occurrence network of modern samples. These results suggest the possibility of differences in the pathogens causing periodontitis during different eras in history.

The aim of this report is to show that periodontitis and peri-implantitis with horizontal bone resorption in a 68-year-old male patient were successfully treated by non-surgical treatment. Scaling with an ultrasonic device was performed for moderate periodontitis around the mandibular left first premolar and moderate peri-implantitis around the maxillary right molar implants. Root planing with a metal curette was performed for the periodontal site, and debridement with a plastic curette was performed for the peri-implant site. A month after treatment, probing depth decreased from 5 to 2 mm at the periodontal site and 8 to 3 mm at the peri-implant site. The investigation of bacterial composition by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene amplicons showed that the composition similarly changed at both sites, 5 years after treatment; the change reflected the typical recovery of periodontitis. The clinical condition was maintained for 7 years after treatment at both sites. This was a successful case of non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis with horizontal bone resorption, promoting recovery of the microbiota from dysbiotic shift.

Peri-implantitis and periodontitis are both polymicrobial diseases induced by subgingival plaque accumulation, with some differing clinical features. Studies on the microbial and gene transcription activity of peri-implantitis microbiota are limited. This study aimed to verify the hypothesis that disease-specific microbial and gene transcription activity lead to disease-specific clinical features, using an integrated metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and network analysis. Metagenomic data in peri-implantitis and periodontitis were obtained from the same 21 subjects and metatranscriptomic data from 12 subjects were obtained from a database. The microbial co-occurrence network based on metagenomic analysis had more diverse species taxa and correlations than the network based on the metatranscriptomic analysis. Solobacterium moorei and Prevotella denticola had high activity and were core species taxa specific to peri-implantitis in the co-occurrence network. Moreover, the activity of plasmin receptor/glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase genes was higher in peri-implantitis. These activity differences may increase complexity in the peri-implantitis microbiome and distinguish clinical symptoms of the two diseases. These findings should help in exploring a novel biomarker that assist in the diagnosis and preventive treatment design of peri-implantitis.

The amount of hydrogen released after high-pressure hydrogen loading in carbonate was evaluated. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and Mg-substituted CaCO3 were selected as adsorbents. Their crystal structures, specific surface areas (SBET), hydrogen content at high pressure, and the amount of hydrogen released in water were investigated. Calcitic CaCO3 and (Ca0.94,Mg0.06)CO3 structures were identified for the respective samples, and their adsorption forms were found to be of type II as per IUPAC classification. The SBET values were 2.9–6.8 m2/g. The hydrogen content in (Ca0.94,Mg0.06)CO3 was found to be higher than that of calcite CaCO3 at high pressures. Stroke is associated with multiple forms of disability, including dysphagia. Post-stroke dysphagia increases the risks of pneumonia and mortality and often results in cessation of oral feeding. However, appropriate rehabilitation methods can eventually lead to resumption of oral food intake. This study tried to clarify that re-initiating oral food intake could modify the composition of oral/gut microbial communities in patients with dysphagia. From 78 patients with sub-acute stage of stroke, 11 complete tube feeding subjects without taking antibiotics were enrolled and received rehabilitation for re-initiation of oral food intake, and 8 subjects were brought back to complete oral feeding. Oral and gut microbiota community profiles were evaluated using 16S rRNA sequencing of the saliva and feces samples before and after re-initiation of oral food intake in patients recovering from enteral nutrition under the same nutrient condition. Standard nutrition in the hospital was 1,840 kcal, including protein = 75 g, fat = 45 g, and carbohydrates = 280 g both for tube and oral feeding subjects. Oral food intake increased oral and gut microbiome diversity and altered the composition of the microbiome. Oral and gut microbiome compositions were drastically different; however, the abundance of family Carnobacteriaceae and genus Granulicatella was increased in both the oral and gut microbiome after re-initiation of oral food intake. Although oral microbiota showed more significant changes than the gut microbiota, metagenome prediction revealed the presence of more differentially enriched pathways in the gut. In addition, simpler co-occurrence networks of oral and gut microbiomes, indicating improved dysbiosis of the microbiome, were observed during oral feeding as compared to that during tube feeding. Oral food intake affects oral and gut microbiomes in patients recovering from enteral nutrition. Rehabilitation for dysphagia can modify systemic health by increasing the diversity and altering the composition and co-occurrence network structure of oral and gut microbial communities.

The effect of irradiation by a hyperthermal-atomic-oxygen beam on hydrogenated titanium-doped diamond-like carbon (hydrogenated Ti-DLC) films, applied as a solid lubricant for equipment used in low-earth orbit was investigated. Unlike the film thickness of hydrogenated non-doped DLC films, that of hydrogenated Ti-DLC films was found to be constant after the films were exposed to atomic oxygen. In addition, bulk composition of the hydrogenated Ti-DLC film stayed constant, and in particular, hydrogen content in the film did not decrease. These results indicate that a hydrogenated Ti-DLC film can keep its low friction properties under vacuum. Surface chemical analysis showed that a titanium-oxide layer is form on the film by exposure to atomic oxygen. The thickness of the titanium oxide layer was estimated to be about 5 nm from the element distribution in the depth direction of the hydrogenated Ti-DLC films. The titanium-oxide layer was interpreted to protect the bulk film from erosion by hyperthermal atomic oxygen.

The number of complications related to dental implants has been increasing, as implant therapy has grown to become the most popular treatment choice for replacing missing teeth. Various cases of implant complications have been reported, particularly biologic complications caused by inadequate surgical techniques, including malpositioned implants, that are difficult to solve. In the present case, two malpositioned implants with peri-implantitis were placed in the maxillary right first molar area of a 64-year-old woman. To treat the peri-implant infection and facilitate self--plaque control, one malpositioned implant was removed, and the other was treated with open flap debridement using an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser. The implant suprastructure was then changed adequately to recover oral function. This case report demonstrates the clinical steps, healing process, and 6-month follow-up of peri-implantitis caused by malpositioned implants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
