Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare disease, particularly amongst men. Herein, we present a case of GM diagnosed in a 63-year-old male patient who showed reduction in the tumor size during 3 months of observation.

Historically and contemporarily marginalized youth who are disproportionately exposed to community violence are often the same youth who are less likely to be civically engaged. However, the community violence and civic engagement literatures have not yet fully explored how these experiences may be linked in young people’s lives and in relation to what other forces. Using developmental assets and ecological-transactional frameworks, we review the emerging literature on civic engagement among youth exposed to community violence and how external developmental assets and neighborhood collective efficacy may create opportunity for their increased civic engagement. We present numerous conceptually- and empirically-based hypotheses to further examine the intersections between exposure to community violence and youth civic engagement. Ultimately, we identify opportunities for intervention.

The human breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2), a member of the ATP-binding cassette transporter family, is a drug transporter restricting absorption and enhancing excretion of many compounds including anticancer drugs. The cis-regulatory elements in the BCRP promoter include a hypoxia response element, i.e., the DNA binding site for hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1). In this study, we investigated the effect of cobalt chloride, a chemical inducer of HIF-1α, on the expression and function of BCRP in human renal proximal tubular cell line HK-2. Cobalt chloride treatment significantly increased the mRNA expression of not only glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), a typical HIF-1 target gene mRNA, but also ABCG2 mRNA in HK-2 cells. The BCRP inhibitor Ko143-sensitive accumulation of BCRP substrates such as Hoechst33342 and mitoxantrone was significantly enhanced by cobalt chloride treatment. In addition, treatment with cobalt chloride significantly increased the Ko143-sensitive accumulation of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled methotrexate in HK-2 cells. Furthermore, cobalt chloride treatment attenuated the cytotoxicity induced by mitoxantrone and methotrexate, which might be, at least in part, due to the increase in BCRP-mediated transport activity via HIF-1 activation. These findings indicate that HIF-1 activation protects renal proximal tubular cells against BCRP substrate-induced cytotoxicity by enhancing the expression and function of BCRP in renal proximal tubular cells.

Little is known about the developmental process of disconnected youth reengaging in more productive aspects of life. For this study, we examined the process of developing productive engagement among 38 disconnected youth who are either gang-affiliated, involved with juvenile justice, or (and) homeless. These youth were reengaging into educational and workforce experiences through a comprehensive youth development center. Using a dynamic systems analytic strategy, we categorized upwards of 24 monthly assessments for each youth to determine their development of productive engagement. We found productive engagement does not develop along a homogeneous path. Instead, we found four different pathways. All youth had dips in their engagement, but those along more positive paths rebounded and continued on to graduation from the program.

Previous research has found that attending racially pluralistic high schools is associated with a reduced likelihood of future electoral and civic engagement. Analysis of a national survey of 18–24 year olds after the 2012 election confirms this finding. However, certain school and family practices and extracurricular activities appear to compensate. Discussion of controversial current issues in social studies classes diminishes the negative association between attending a racially pluralistic school and electoral engagement. School-based discussion is particularly important for young people who attend pluralistic schools and who do not participate in political discussion at home. Opportunities to associate with peers who share common interests through issue-oriented groups predict electoral engagement. Considering that strong arguments can be made in favor of racial diversity in schools, it is important to compensate for the lessened electoral engagement in diverse schools by creating policies and teacher preparation resources that promote high-quality discussion of controversial issues in classrooms, and by encouraging students to participate in extracurricular groups that address political issues.

For this article, we tested whether and to what extent young people’s rates of informed voting are influenced by laws and policies that regulate the electoral system and by civic education policies. Education policies and state voting laws vary widely and are in rapid flux; their impact is important to understand. Immediately after the 2012 election, a sample of 4,483 youth was surveyed that included at least 75 respondents in each of the 50 states and national oversamples of African Americans and Latinos. Their experiences with civic education and support from their families predicted their informed political participation as young adults, but variations in the existing state policies did not matter. This may suggest that the kinds of policies that states have enacted—such as allowing early voting or requiring one course on government in high school—are not helpful but policies that promote extracurricular participation and discussion of current issues in schools could be much more effective.

Using longitudinal data from Grades 8 to 11 of the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, a longitudinal study involving U.S. adolescents, we examined the developmental trajectories of multiple components of civic engagement, and the effects of youth development program participation and participation in another major domain of youth engagement (religious activity) on these trajectories. A set of two-level, hierarchical linear models (time-varying measures of civic engagement at level 1 and covariates at level 2) were conducted. Results indicated that the components of civic engagement have different starting points and growth rates during adolescence and that the contextual factors have differing effects dependent on the civic engagement component. By understanding how the components of civic engagement develop during adolescence, and the contextual factors that affect those trajectories, practitioners can gain more nuanced insights into how and when to effectively encourage youth civic engagement.

既存のデータベースやWebコンテンツに対して、テキストマイニングやデータマイニングを用いて、ユーザーの知識に対するニーズを満たすようなサービスソリューションの開発を考えるときに、我々はユーザーのニーズをどこまで把握しているだろうか。本稿では科学技術振興機構社会技術研究開発センター（JST-RISTEX）が昨年度実施した「問題解決型サービス科学・工学研究開発（NEXER）事業」における深堀調査の内容を紹介し、判例等法律情報を対象とした知識の構造化に対するニーズを明らかにし、社会への実装の在り方を検討した。

An outcome of nuclear safety research (NSR) done by JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) was case studied by the bibliometric method. (1) For LOCA (loss-of-coolant accident) a domestic share of JAERI in monoclinic research paper was 63% at the past (20) 1978-1982 but was decreased to 40% at the present 1998-2002. For co-authored papers a domestic share between JAERI and PS (public sectors) was zero at past (20) but increased to 4% at the present. Research cooperation is active between Tokyo University and JAERI or between JAERI and Nagoya University. (2) It is revealed that LOCA outputs born by NSR-JAERI reflected partly to those of the Safety Licensing Guidelines, however, a share of NSR-JAERI could not determined due to the lack of necessary information in the Guideline.

Civic engagement has gained prominence over the past two decades as an important topic in developmental science. Much has been learned about what civic engagement means, how it is measured, and how young people develop civic engagement. In this chapter, we discuss emerging areas of research for civic engagement and core questions that we believe need to be explored. In particular, we focus on a broader conceptualization of civic engagement beyond behavioral measures, consider the relevance of cultural and political contexts on the development of civic engagement among under-served populations, and discuss the implications of advancing the civic engagement field on the civic participation of youth in the United States and throughout the world.

A review of efforts at social system change in 526 universal competence-promotion outcome studies indicated that 64% of the interventions attempted some type of microsystemic or mesosystemic change involving schools, families, or community-based organizations in an attempt to foster developmental competencies in children and adolescents. Only 24% of the reports provided quantitative data on the change that occurred in targeted systems. However, studies containing the necessary information produced several mean effect sizes that were statistically significant, and ranged from modest to large in magnitude. These data indicate that attempts to change social systems affecting children and adolescents can be successful. Future work should measure more thoroughly the extent to which the systemic changes that are targeted through intervention are achieved, and investigate how such changes contribute to the development and sustainability of the outcomes that might be demonstrated by participants of competence-promotion programs.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of dysphagia among elderly persons living at home in a community using a questionnaire for dysphagia screening. As the reliability of the questionnaire had not yet been confirmed in an epidemiological study, it was also verified. The relationship between dysphagia and the level of daily living competence was also clarified. The subjects consisted of 1313 elderly persons 65 years and older (575 males and 738 females) living at home in a community. The questionnaire included questions concerning the individual's past history of stroke, and questions for dysphagia screening, competence scoring, and perceived ill health. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed after calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient to be 0.83. The results of a factor analysis showed that the cumulative contribution rate was 61.8%. The prevalence rate of dysphagia was 13.8%. After matching for age and sex, there were significant differences in the competence scores, history of stroke, and perceived ill health status observed between the group with dysphagia and the group without dysphagia.

Recently in Japan, regional promotion policies that focus the science and technology innovation are nationally implemented. One of the aims of this paper is to revaluate these Science and Technology Innovation Policy, especially Regional Cluster Program from a perspective of Social Capital. And the other aim is to define the close connection between Science and Technology Innovation and Social Capital by factual analyses. Qualitative analysis of difference by Regional Cluster Program and qualitative analysis of experts-interview suggest that Social Capital act as a factor of innovation and the program raise regional Social Capital among industry, academia and government. These results support the significance of the policy but in parallel, the qualitative analysis of experts-interview indicates the problem in the current implementation system.

The article focuses on a preliminary estimate by The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University, which shows that voter turnout among 18 to 29-year-olds in the 2018 midterm elections was 31 percent. Topics include in many ways, the election cycle in the U.S. in 2018 showed how different groups can create diverse paths to political engagement and the proportion of young people who joined protests and marches tripled since the fall of 2016.
