3. 1-(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-3-methylphosphole: a phosphole with a significantly flattened phosphorus pyramid having pronounced characteristics of aromaticity

Abstract

A study was conducted on a phosphole with a significantly flattened phosphorus pyramid. The findings indicate a drastic flattening of the phosphorus pyramid from the normal out of plane angle of 65 degrees to 45.9 degrees. Moreover the C3-C4 bond length was significantly shortened relative to that for other phospholes. The phosphole ring also reacted with acetyl chloride-aluminum chloride.

Abstract

Dehydrohalogenation of 3,4-dibromophospholane affords the sterically crowded 1-(2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-methylphenyl)-3-methylphosphole which has a (sup 31)P NMR shift of delta 1.8 in CDCl. The recrystallizable solid, which has a flatter phosphorus pyramid than 1-phenylphosphole, contains orthogonal phosphole and phenyl rings and a 6-methyl unit under the phosphole ring. Its oxide forms a cycloadduct with the dienophile N-phenylmaleimide in reactions with triethylamine in benzene.

Abstract

Photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to determine whether sterically crowded phospholes with a P-aryl unit bearing ortho substituents have a flatter phosphorus pyramid and enhanced electron delocalization. To this end, computations of the Koopmans ionization energy (IE) of 1-methyl- and 1-phenylphosphole were performed at the Hartree-Fock 6-31G* level as a function of pyramidal flattening. The results indicated the Koopmans IE of 1-(2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-methylphenyl)-3-methylphosphole to be, at 7.9 eV, the lowest for a phosphole.

Abstract

The potential of phosphole-core ligands was investigated by synthesizing platinum complexes of phospholes with reduced pyramidal character from steric crowding. Both dibenzophospholyl(super 2-5) and binaphthophospholyl(super 6,7) moieties were connected to chiral carbon backbones in chelating ligands, which were used in enantioselective platinum-catalyzed hydroformylation. The coordination chemistry of diphosphines and diphospholes with platinum was found to be significantly different.
