Objective: There is no other screening program close to the success rate of PAP test. Cervical cytology constitutes a large workload so that quality control in cervical cytology is important for the quality assurance of pathology laboratories. Material and Method: In this study, we collected the cervical cytology results from all over Turkey and discussed the parameters influencing the quality of the PAP test. The study was conducted with Turkish gynaecopathology working group and 38 centers (totally 45 hospitals) agreed to contribute from 24 different cities. The study was designed to cover the cervical cytology results during 2013. The results were evaluated from the data based on an online questionnaire. Results: The total number of Epithelial Cell Abnormality was 18,020 and the global Epithelial Cell Abnormality rate was 5.08% in the total 354,725 smears and ranging between 0.3% to 16.64% among centers. The Atypical squamous cells/Squamous intraepithelial lesion ratios changed within the range of 0.21-13.94 with an average of 2.61. When the centers were asked whether they performed quality assurance studies, only 14 out of 28 centers, which shared the information, had such a control study and some quality parameters were better in these centers. Conclusion: There is an increase in the global Epithelial Cell Abnormality rate and there are great differences among centers. Quality control studies including the Atypical squamous cells/Squamous intraepithelial lesion ratio are important. Corrective and preventive action according to quality control parameters is a must. A cervical cytology subspecialist in every center can be utopic but a dedicated pathologist in the center is certainly needed.

WOS: 000376470900021 PubMed: 27352574 Purpose of investigation: Primary sarcomas account for of 2-3% of all female genital tract cancers and ovaries are unusual sites for sarcomas. The authors aimed to report a case of primary ovarian sarcoma. Materials and Methods: A 46-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain and distention. Abdominal MRI revealed a 20-cm-sized complex mass in the right adnexa and ascites. Preoperative CA-125 was 289 U/ml. She underwent optimal debulking surgery and diagnosed with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma with focally rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation. Results: The patient presented with severe abdominal pain and distention 32 days after the operation and recurrent disease was diagnosed. First cure of adjuvant chemotherapy was administered, but she died 15 days later. Conclusion: Coexistence of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma shows highly aggressive behavior and its prognosis is extremely poor. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the second case report of the coexistence of these type tumors in the literature.

The present study reports the case of a 64-year-old female with a left supraclavicular mass without any other symptoms. After performing a fine needle aspiration biopsy for pathological examination and positron emission imaging, she was diagnosed with FIGO Stage IV high-grade serous epithelial ovarian carcinoma. After three cycles of chemotherapy with paxlitaxel and carboplatin, complete response was achieved. There are only a few reports in literature that address patients with the initial symptom of left supraclavicular mass and fmal diagnosis of ovarian cancer. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report to describe the successful use of PET/CT to determine the primary site.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate electrophysiological and histopathological effects of mesenchymal stem cells in treatment of sciatic nerve injury. Material and methods: Thirty-two female Spraque-Dawley rat were used in this study. Eight rats were used as a reference group in electrophysiological analysis for evaluation of non-injured nerve recordings (Control Group). Twenty-four rats were used for experimental evaluation. Twelve rats were anastomosed without treatment with mesenchymal stem cells (Sham Group) and twelve other rats were anastomosed and treated with mesenchymal stem cells (Stem Cell Group). Surgicel and bioglue were used in anastomosed line in both Groups. Eight weeks after the surgery, electrophysiological evaluation of rats was performed and, then, rats were decapitated under anesthesia and specimens including sciatic nerves and anastomosed line were taken for histopathological evaluation. Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity testing and histopathological scoring including rate of Wallerian degeneration, and neuroma and scar formation were evaluated for both Groups. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between Sham and Stem Cell Groups with respect to histopathological evaluation. However, nerve conduction velocity showed significant difference between groups (P = 0.001). Nerve conduction velocity was significantly improved in Stem Cell Group when compared to Sham Group. Conclusion: In this study, based on nerve conduction velocity data, it was concluded that treatment with mesenchymal stem cells during end-to-end anastomosis improves functional regeneration.

Hormone producing ovarian tumors, ovarian tumor with functioning stroma, tumor related paraneoplastic and paraendocrine syndromes, paraganglioma and neuroendocrine tumors may include in this category. These tumors or its stroma can produce some hormones, which are led to endocrine manifestations. Rarely tumors associated with paraneoplastic and endocrine syndromes. Among these lesions, primary neuroendocrine tumors are rarely seen in the gynecologic tract, comprising 2% of gynecologic cancers. They have specific cytological and histopathological features that are usually helpful in differentiating them from epithelial tumors. Nevertheless, they still provide a diagnostic and clinical challenge, given their rarity. Accurate diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumor is essential for both therapeutic and prognostic purposes. In this review, we focused on neuroendocrine tumors of the gynecological tract and their morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular findings. PubMed: 24848078 Aim. Aim of the study was the comparison of the connective tissue components in the uterine ligaments between the women with and without pelvic organ prolapse. Methods. This study included 15 postmenopausal women without pelvic organ prolapse who underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for benign pathologies (control group) and 15 postmenopausal women who underwent vaginal hysterectomy because of pelvic organ prolapse (POP group). During the operation, samples for histological examination were taken from the cardinal and sacrouterine ligaments. The contents of collagen type I, collagen type III and elastin, and number and mitotic activity of fibroblasts in uterine ligaments were histopatholocially determined. Results. The collagen type I content for the POP group was significantly higher than that of the control group. Collagen type III content, elastin content, and number and mitotic activity of fibroblasts were not significantly different between the control and POP groups. Conclusion. Collagen type I was found to be increased in the uterine ligaments of the POP group. The other connective tissue components did not differ between the two groups.

A 72 year-old woman suffering from abdominal pain, was referred to our clinic with the finding of palpable pelvic mass. Transvaginal ultrasonography revealed a 107x95 mm cyst with hypo and hyperechogenities in the right ovary suggesting cystic teratoma. She was operated to rule out an ovarian or endometrial malignancy. An exploratory laparotomy, total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingoophorectomy and appendectomy were performed. Intraoperative frozen section examination of the right adnexal mass and the uterus was benign. However, the final pathologic diagnosis was adenocarcinoma arising from mature cystic teratoma. Afterwards, a staging laparotomy comprising bilateral pelvic, paraaortic lymphadenectomy and omentectomy was undertaken. Omentum and all lymph nodes were tumor free except a solitary grossly enlarged one at para-aortic region. Postoperatively 6 courses of adjuvant chemotherapy composed of paclitaxel and carboplatin were administered. At postoperative 33rd month follow-up, the patient is disease free. To the best our knowledge, this is one of the preliminary cases which an adenocarcinoma derived in a dermoid cyst with paraaortic lymph node metastasis. Copyright © 2013 by Türkiye Klinikleri.

PubMed: 22627642 A 43-year-old man with a long history of dyspnea which had progressively worsened over the preceding month is presented. He had worked in an antimony mine for 3 years. Radiologically, there were diffuse reticulonodular shadowing opacities in both lung parenchymas. Histopathologic examination of the open-lung biopsy specimen revealed alveolar spaces filled with dust-laden macrophages and amorphous proteinaceous semifluid, the latter being immunoreactive for Human Surfactant Apoprotein A, associated with marked interstitial accumulation of the similar-looking macrophages along the bronchovascular bundles and mild interstitial fibrosis. Silicotic nodules or mixed dust fibrosis were not seen. The patient was diagnosed as silicoproteinosis with unusual histopathological features because he had worked in an antimony mine for only 3 years and had 86% silica in a mineralogical analysis. Pneumoconiosis is a rare lung disease which may be confused with other interstitial lung diseases. Clinical, radiological and unusual histopathologic features of this rare case are presented and discussed with the differential diagnosis, especially of mixed dust pneumoconiosis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic and differential significance of two recently introduced positive mesothelial markers, namely podoplanin and D2-40. Material and Method: The study group included a total of 55 cases: 11 cases of malignant mesothelioma and equal number of cases (n:11) of primary lung adenocarcinoma, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, metastatic carcinoma of the pleura and mesothelial proliferation. D2-40, podoplanin, calretinin, cytokeratin 5/6, carcinoembryonic antigen, epithelial specific antigen (MOC-31) were immunohistochemically studied in all cases. The extent of staining was graded between 1+ and 4+. Results: While the 7 (63.6%) of the mesotheliomas and 10 of the mesothelial proliferations (90.9%) stained positive with D2-40, no positive staining was noted in primary lung adenocarcinoma, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, metastatic carcinoma of the pleura. 9 of the mesotheliomas (81.8%) and 10 of the mesothelial proliferations (90.9%) were positive with podoplanin whereas no positive staining was observed in the other groups. Eight of the primary lung adenocarcinomas (72.7%), seven of the bronchioloalveolar carcinomas (63.6%), and eight of the metastatic carcinomas of the pleura (72.7%) were positive for MOC-31 while only one of the mesotheliomas (9%) was positive and no mesothelial proliferation cases were positive. The specificity of podoplanin, D2-40, calretinin and cytokeratin 5/6 for mesothelioma was 100% and their sensitivity was 81.8%, 63.6%, 81.8% and 54.5%, respectively. The highest sensitivity, (i.e. 100% sensitivity) for mesothelioma was observed with the D2-40, podoplanin, and calretinin combination. Conclusion: D2-40 and Podoplanin were effective in differentiating malignant mesothelioma from primary lung adenocarcinomas, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma and metastatic carcinomas of the pleura. However, since they may not yield precise results it was therefore concluded that a panel combined with positive and negative mesothelial markers including these two markers will lead to more accurate results.

İlk kez 1937 yılında Kimm ve Szeto tarafından bildirilmiş ve eozinofilik hiperplastik lenfogranuloma olarak adlandırılmıştır. 1948 yılında Kimura ve arkadaşları tarafından etraflıca tanımlanmış ve Kimura hastalığı olarak literatürde yerini almıştır. Baş boyun bölgesinde lenfadenopati veya kitle şeklinde karşımıza çıkar ve germinal merkezleri belirgin lenfoid foliküller ve eozinofilik infiltrasyon ile karakterizedir. Oldukça nadir görülen bir hastalık olup klinik ve histopatolo-jik olarak diğer enflamatuar hastalıklar ve maligniteler ile karışabilir. In our report h i s t o p a t o l o g i c a l and clinical features of a case diagnosed as Kimura disease were discussed with the literature findings.

Rhabdoib Meningioma (Case Report)Meningiomas arise from the meningothelial cells of the arachnoid. Intracranial meningiomas account for 20 % of all symptomatic primary brain tumors. The rhabdoid transformation of meningioma was firstly described by Kepes et al. Here we present a rhabdoid meningioma and discuss in the light of the literature.Meningiomalar araknoiddeki meningotelyal hücrelerden kaynaklanırlar. İntrakranial menin-giomalar semptomatik primer beyin tümörlerinin tümörlerin yaklaşık %20'sini oluştururlar. Meningiomda rabdoid dönüşüm ilk kez Kepes ve arkadaşları tarafından tanımlanmıştır. Biz bir rabdoid meningioma olgusunu literatür ışığında tartışıyoruz.

Fibröz displazi genellikle çocukluk ya da adolesan döneminde görülen, kemiğin benign fib-roosseöz lezyonudur. İlk kez 1938 de Lichtenstein tarafından tanımlanmıştır. Etiyolojisi tam olarak bilinmemektedir. Büyüyen ve gelişmekte olan kemikleri tutmaktadır ve kemik büyümesinin durması ile gelişiminin durduğu ifade edilmektedir. Bizim olgumuz 41 yaşında kadın hasta olup sağ 1. kostada yaklaşık 6 yıl sonra tekrarlayan ve 2. kostayı da tutan lokal agresif seyirli fibröz displazi olgusudur. There was no significant d ifference between nuclear morphometrical data and conventional method. This situation shows that subjective grading method not overlap with morphometrical method.Bu çalışmada Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Patoloji AD 1999-2003 yıllan arası arşivleri taranarak tespit edilen 30 infiltratif duktal karsinom olgusunda tümör hücrelerinin nükleer morfometrik özellikleri görüntü analiz sistemi ile değerlendirilerek konvansiyonel histopatolojik derece, nükleer derece, tübül formasyonu ve mitoz sıklığı ile ilişkisi araştırıldı. Konvansiyonel metod ve morfometrik veriler arasında anlamlı fark saptanmadı. Bu durum subjektif dereceleme yöntemi ile ortaya konulan konvansiyonel derecenin morfometrik yöntem ile örtüşmediğini göstermiştir.

Adenosarcoma is a rare tumor in the female genital tract. It contains benign epithelial and malignant stromal component. It consist of 8% of uterine sarcomas. They present as polypoid masses arising from the endometrium and can invade the myometrium. Leiomyomas are benign mesenchymal tumors that rarely occur in the kidney. These tumors are usually small asymptomatic and often detected incidentally. Symptomatic large tumors are very rare. Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia is a very rare vascular disesase which is seen typically in head and neck region and has an unknown etiology. It was first described by Wells and Whimster in 1969. It was later classified as histiocytoid hemangioma by Rosai. In this paper, angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia detected in a patient with Behcet disease is discussed with the literature review by focusing on its histomorphologic, clinic features and coexistence with Behcet disease. © 2009 OMÜ Tüm Haklari Saklidir.

Multicystic Nephroma is an uncommon renal pathology, characterized by the presence of usually unilateral circumscribed focal lesion consisting of multiple thin walled cysts. The etiology and pathogenesis of multicystic nephroma is not clear, and it is considered as a neoplastic lesion by many authors. It is seen primarily infants but rarely that may occur in adults. In this report, presented adult multicystic nephroma because it is rarely seen and importance of differential diagnosis, and discussed in the light of literature.

Malignant mixed mullerian tumor (carcinosarcoma) of the ovary is a rare, highly aggressive neoplasm that is characterized by the presence of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. It accounts for less than 1% of all ovarian tumors and tend to occur in low parity postmenopausal women. In this report, histopathological and immunohistochemically findings of two cases of malignant mixed mullerian tumor that is presented because of its rarity and discussed in the light of literature.

Cardiac rhabdomyomas usually present early in life with a variety of symptoms including sudden death. Although primary cardiac tumors are rare, rhabdomyomas are seen most frequently in infancy and childhood. We present a female infant, who was dead in a short time after the discovery of a mediastinally mass and discuss its clinical and histopathological characteristics in the light of literature.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare specialized form of malignant neuroectodermal tumor arising from the olfactory neuroepithelium. It was firstly described in 1924 by Berger and Luc. It accounts for about 3% of all tumors of the nasal cavity. A case of olfactory neuroblastoma of a 48 years old male patient is reported because of its rarity and is discussed in the light of literature.
