Abstract

The Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) is a planned radio interferometer providing unprecedented sensitivity at wavelengths between 21 cm and 3 mm. Its 263 antenna element array will be spatially distributed across North America to enable both superb low surface brightness recovery and sub-milliarcsecond angular resolution imaging. The project was developed by the international astronomy community under the lead of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), and is anticipated to be built between 2027 and 2037. Two workshops have been held in 2022 and 2023 with the goal to discuss and consolidate the scientific interests in the ngVLA within the German astronomical community. This community paper constitutes a collection of 48 science ideas which the German community aims to pursue with the ngVLA in the 2030s. This is not a complete list and the ideas are not developed at the level of a "Science Book", such that the present document is mainly meant provide a basis for further discussion within the community. Abstract

We report on the kinetic inductance detector (KID) array focal plane assembly design for the Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM). Each of the 2 arrays consists of 4 wafer-sized dies (quadrants), and the overall assembly must satisfy thermal and mechanical requirements, while maintaining high optical efficiency and a suitable electromagnetic environment for the KIDs. In particular, our design manages to strictly maintain a 50 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ air gap between the array and the horn block. We have prototyped and are now testing a sub-scale assembly which houses a single quadrant for characterization before integration into the full array. Abstract

The Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM) is designed to probe the star formation history in dust-obscured star-forming galaxies around the peak of cosmic star formation. This will be done via measurements of the redshifted 157.7 um line of singly ionized carbon ([CII]). TIM employs two R $\sim 250$ long-slit grating spectrometers covering 240-420 um. Each is equipped with a focal plane unit containing 4 wafer-sized subarrays of horn-coupled aluminum kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). We present the design and performance of a prototype focal plane assembly for one of TIM's KID-based subarrays. Our design strictly maintain high optical efficiency and a suitable electromagnetic environment for the KIDs. The prototype detector housing in combination with the first flight-like quadrant are tested at 250 mK. Initial frequency scan shows that many resonances are affected by collisions and/or very shallow transmission dips as a result of a degraded internal quality factor (Q factor). This is attributed to the presence of an external magnetic field during cooldown. We report on a study of magnetic field dependence of the Q factor of our quadrant array. We implement a Helmholtz coil to vary the magnetic field at the detectors by (partially) nulling earth's. Our investigation shows that the earth magnetic field can significantly affect our KIDs' performance by degrading the Q factor by a factor of 2-5, well below those expected from the operational temperature or optical loading. We find that we can sufficiently recover our detectors' quality factor by tuning the current in the coils to generate a field that matches earth's magnetic field in magnitude to within a few uT. Therefore, it is necessary to employ a properly designed magnetic shield enclosing the TIM focal plane unit. Few studies have compared retinal and brain measurements in a middle-aged sample. The objective of our study was to investigate whether retinal neuronal measurements were associated with structural brain measurements in a middle-aged population-based cohort.Participants and Methods: Participants were members of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study (n=1037; a longitudinal cohort followed from birth and at ages 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 26, 32, 38, and most recently at age 45, when 94% of the living Study members participated). Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness were measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Brain age gap estimate (brainAGE), cortical surface area, cortical thickness, subcortical grey matter volumes, white matter hyperintensities, were measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Results: Participants with both MRI and OCT data were included in the analysis (RNFL n=828, female n=413 [49.9%], male n=415 [50.1%]; GC-IPL n=825, female n=413 [50.1%], male n=412 [49.9%]). Thinner retinal neuronal layers were associated with older brain age, smaller cortical surface area, thinner average cortex, smaller subcortical grey matter volumes, and increased volume of white matter hyperintensities.Conclusion: These findings provide evidence that the retinal neuronal layers reflect differences in midlife structural brain integrity consistent with increased risk for later AD, supporting the proposition that the retina may be an early biomarker of brain health.Keywords: optical coherence tomography, retina, Alzheimer’s, magnetic resonance imaging, brain aging

8. Evolution of the Major Merger Galaxy Pair Fraction at z < 1

Abstract

We present a study of the largest available sample of near-infrared selected (i.e., stellar mass selected) dynamically close pairs of galaxies at low redshifts ($z<0.3$). We combine this sample with new estimates of the major-merger pair fraction for stellar mass selected galaxies at $z<0.8$, from the Red Sequence Cluster Survey (RCS1). We construct our low-redshift $K-$band selected sample using photometry from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) in the $K-$band ($\sim 2.2~\mu$m). Combined with all available spectroscopy, our $K-$band selected sample contains $\sim 250,000$ galaxies and is $> 90\%$ spectroscopically complete. The depth and large volume of this sample allow us to investigate the low-redshift pair fraction and merger rate of galaxies over a wide range in $K-$band luminosity. We find the major-merger pair fraction to be flat at $\sim 2\%$ as a function of $K-$band luminosity for galaxies in the range $10^8 - 10^{12} L_{\odot}$, in contrast to recent results from studies in the local group that find a substantially higher low-mass pair fraction. This low-redshift major-merger pair fraction is $\sim 40-50\%$ higher than previous estimates drawn from $K-$band samples, which were based on 2MASS photometry alone. Combining with the RCS1 sample we find a much flatter evolution ($m = 0.7 \pm 0.1$), in the relation $f_{\rm{pair}} \propto (1+z)^m$, than indicated in many previous studies. These results indicate that a typical $L\sim L^*$ galaxy has undergone $\sim 0.2-0.8$ major mergers since $z=1$ (depending on the assumptions of merger timescale and percentage of pairs that actually merge)., Comment: Revised to match the version accepted to ApJ

9. VLA 1.4 GHz Catalogs of the Abell 370 and Abell 2390 Cluster Fields

Abstract

We present 1.4 GHz catalogs for the cluster fields Abell 370 and Abell 2390 observed with the Very Large Array. These are two of the deepest radio images of cluster fields ever taken. The Abell 370 image covers an area of 40'x40' with a synthesized beam of ~1.7" and a noise level of ~5.7 uJy near field center. The Abell 2390 image covers an area of 34'x34' with a synthesized beam of ~1.4" and a noise level of ~5.6 uJy near field center. We catalog 200 redshifts for the Abell 370 field. We construct differential number counts for the central regions (radius < 16') of both clusters. We find that the faint (S_1.4GHz < 3 mJy) counts of Abell 370 are roughly consistent with the highest blank field number counts, while the faint number counts of Abell 2390 are roughly consistent with the lowest blank field number counts. Our analyses indicate that the number counts are primarily from field radio galaxies. We suggest that the disagreement of our counts can be largely attributed to cosmic variance., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in ApJS

Abstract

Recent cosmological modeling efforts have shown that a local underdensity on scales of a few hundred Mpc (out to z ~ 0.1), could produce the apparent acceleration of the expansion of the universe observed via type Ia supernovae. Several studies of galaxy counts in the near-infrared (NIR) have found that the local universe appears under-dense by ~25-50% compared with regions a few hundred Mpc distant. Galaxy counts at low redshifts sample primarily L ~ L* galaxies. Thus, if the local universe is under-dense, then the normalization of the NIR galaxy luminosity function (LF) at z>0.1 should be higher than that measured for z<0.1. Here we present a highly complete (> 90%) spectroscopic sample of 1436 galaxies selected in the H-band to study the normalization of the NIR LF at 0.1

11. Active management: a definition and considerations for implementation in forests of temperate Australia

Abstract

ABSTRACTActive management is often mentioned but rarely defined in current policies and strategies for native forests of temperate Australia. Lack of clarity about active management could mean that policies to support forest health and human involvement with forests are not fit for purpose. In this paper, we summarise the policy context for active management in Victoria (as a case study for temperate Australia) and review representations of active management in the broader temperate-forest literature, including its place in relation to associated concepts like adaptive management. Based on the review, we provide a definition of active management that focuses on human activities in forests – deliberate practices for diverse purposes and goals – situated within broader operational approaches (e.g. adaptive management frameworks) that enact the overarching philosophy and paradigm(s) of forest management. Our definition acknowledges multiple potential framings of active management that encompass diverse philosophies and sociocultural relationships with forests and require governance structures that foster inclusive understandings. Additional considerations for implementing active management in Australia’s temperate forests include refreshed visions for forest management, clearly stated goals for active management, criteria for choosing among practices under uncertainty, revised operational guidelines for diverse practices, and commitment to building the evidence base for active management through iterative learning and targeted experiments within an adaptive management or analogous framework.

12. The Resolved NIR Extragalactic Background

Abstract

We present a current best estimate of the integrated near-infrared (NIR) extragalactic background light (EBL) attributable to resolved galaxies in J, H, and Ks . Our results for measurements of {\nu}I{\nu} in units of nW m-2 sr-1 are 11.7+5.6 -2.6 in J, 11.5+4 .5 -1.5 in H and 10.0+2 .8 -0.8 in Ks . We derive these new limits by combining our deep wide-field NIR photometry from five widely separated fields with other studies from the literature to create a galaxy counts sample that is highly complete and has good counting statistics out to J H Ks ~ 27 - 28. As part of this effort we present new ultradeep Ks -band galaxy counts from 22 hours of observations with the Multi Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) instrument on the Subaru Telescope. We use this MOIRCS Ks -band mosaic to estimate the total missing flux from sources beyond our detection limits. Our new lim- its to the NIR EBL are in basic agreement with, but 10 - 20% higher than previous estimates, bringing them into better agreement with estimates of the total NIR EBL (resolved + unresolved sources) obtained from TeV {\gamma}-ray opacity measurements and recent direct measurements of the total NIR EBL, as well as recent model estimates for the total light from galaxies. Abstract

We present a deep, wide-field near-infrared (NIR) survey over five widely separated fields at high Galactic latitude covering a total of ~ 3 deg^2 in J, H, and Ks. The deepest areas of the data (~ 0.25 deg^2) extend to a 5 sigma limiting magnitude of JHKs > 24 in the AB magnitude system. Although depth and area vary from field to field, the overall depth and large area of this dataset make it one of the deepest wide-field NIR imaging surveys to date. This paper discusses the observations, data reduction, and bright galaxy counts in these fields. We compare the slope of the bright galaxy counts with the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and other counts from the literature and explore the relationship between slope and supergalactic latitude. The slope near the supergalactic equator is sub- Euclidean on average pointing to the possibility of a decreasing average space density of galaxies by ~ 10-15% over scales of ~ 250-350 Mpc. On the contrary, the slope at high supergalactic latitudes is strongly super-Euclidean on average suggesting an increase in the space density of galaxies as one moves from the voids just above and below the supergalactic plane out to distances of ~ 250-350 Mpc. These results suggest that local large scale structure could be responsible for large discrepancies in the measured slope between different studies in the past. In addition, the local universe away from the supergalactic plane appears to be underdense by ~ 25-100% relative to the space densities of a few hundred megaparsecs distant. Abstract

We use WIYN High-resolution Infrared Camera (WHIRC) H (1.6 micron) band imaging, archival Spitzer, HST, and GALEX data, simulations and data from the literature to argue for the presence of a strong end-on bar in nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6503. The evidence consists of both photometric and kinematic signatures as well as resonant structures present in the galaxy which are most often associated with bars. These include a central peak followed by a plateau in the surface brightness profile, an extreme decrement in the central stellar velocity dispersion (a sigma-drop), and the presence of an inner ring as well as a circumnuclear disk with spiral structure. Abstract

The Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM) is a NASA far-infrared balloon mission designed to perform [CII] intensity mapping of the peak of cosmic star formation. To achieve this goal, TIM will fly two grating spectrometers that together cover the 240–420 μ m wavelength range at a spectral resolution, R ∼ 250 . Each spectrometer will require a large format ( ∼ 3600 detectors) array of dual-polarization sensitive detectors, which are photon noise limited at the 100 fW of loading expected during operation. We present the design of a fully-aluminum low-volume lumped-element kinetic inductance detector that incorporates a novel "chain-link" absorber design. Operating at 215 mK, we demonstrate this detector achieves a photon noise limited performance at 100 fW of optical loading with a white noise spectrum down to 1 Hz. Based upon noise measurements of a dark detector, which shows a quasi-particle lifetime of 300 μ s , these KIDs are expected to achieve a detector-limited noise equivalent power of ∼ 1.3 × 10 - 18 W / Hz . Regardless of future arrangements for diabetes review programmes, regular review of patients remains clinically important. AIM: To investigate the effect of patient and practice characteristics on the retention of patients continuously enrolled with the same practice in the DAR programme. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective, observational study of a cohort of enrolled diabetic patients who had a DAR in the July 2006 - June 2007 reporting year and remained enrolled with the same practice for the following three years. Controlling for death and migration, retention rates were calculated for age, gender, ethnicity, rurality, practice funding type and practice nurse (PN) to general practitioner (GP) ratio. RESULTS: The study included data from 78 practices and 6610 patients with Type 2 diabetes. Non-Maori and those aged 60 years and over were more likely to be retained in the programme. For practice factors, those with a higher PN to GP ratio had a significant retention advantage. Rurality and funding type was not shown to have a significant role in retention. DISCUSSION: Results support the view that both patient and practice factors influence a patient's retention within the DAR programme. The PN to GP ratio may be an important factor in the retention of patients in a DAR programme and warrants further research and consideration when planning future primary care models.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn the summer of 2019/20, bushfires of unprecedented scale in south-eastern Australia focused attention on how forest management might have affected their risks and impacts. Some argued that the severity and extent of these fires were made worse by timber harvesting and associated forest management and that harvesting in native forests should cease as a means for reducing fire risk. Little evidence has been presented to support these contentions. This article reviews evidence for the relationship between harvesting and fire extent and severity from these fires. The proportion of forested conservation reserves burnt in these fires was similar to that for public forests where timber harvesting is permitted, and the proportion of forest burnt with different levels of fire severity was similar across tenures and over time since timber harvest. Recent analysis of the areas burnt in 2019/20 indicated that the extent and severity of the fires was determined almost entirely by three years of well-below-average rainfall (leading to dry fuels across all vegetation types), extreme fire weather conditions and local topography and that past timber harvesting had negligible or no impact on fire severity. Three major inquiries into the fires made no recommendations regarding the impact of timber harvesting on fire risk. We argue that policy proposals to mitigate fire risk and impacts should be evidence-based and, to avoid the cognitive bias associated with expert opinions, should integrate the multiple perspectives of traditional Indigenous knowledge, the experience of local and professional fire managers, and the breadth of evidence from bushfire research. Together, these perspectives should inform strategies for reducing bushfire impacts and increasing forest resilience and community safety.

43. Preserving auditory situation awareness in headphone-distracted persons

Abstract

Auditory distraction due to portable audio devices poses a hazard for pedestrians and cyclists. To explore solutions, auditory situation awareness (SA) was assessed within a simulated auditory roadway environment rendered via speakers. Participants' ability to report the presence and current/future location of vehicles was measured. The key manipulation was whether concurrently-presented distracting music was spatialised. Also manipulated were two common safety measures that impact spatialisation quality: whether bone or air conduction headphones were used, and whether sounds were presented in one or both ears. Spatialisation of distractors improved vehicle localisation in some conditions, as did presenting to one ear and via bone conduction. In Experiment 2, distractors were spatialised adaptively, to be diametrically opposed to targets. This intervention improved localisation without increasing workload. Results suggest that static or adaptive spatialisation should be considered as a safety measure for sound presentation in computing systems used by cyclists or pedestrians.

Abstract

ABSTRACT BACKGROUNDCommunity engagement is believed to be an important component of quality primary health care. We aimed to capture specific examples of community engagement by general practices, and to understand the barriers that prevent engagement. METHODSWe conducted 20 distinct interviews with 31 key informants from general practice and the wider community. The interviews were semi-structured around key relevant topics and were analysed thematically. RESULTSKey themes identified from the interview transcripts included an understanding of ‘community’, examples of community engagement and the perceived benefits and barriers to community-engaged general practice. We particularly explored aspects of community engagement with Māori. CONCLUSIONSGeneral practices in the study do not think in terms of communities, and they do not have a systematic framework for engagement. Although local champions have generated some great initiatives, most practices seemed to lack a conceptual framework for engagement: who to engage with, how to engage with them, and how to evaluate the results of the engagement.

50. Climate change and Australian production forests: impacts and adaptation

Abstract

ABSTRACTAustralia has a highly diverse and variable climate and its forests evolved under a relatively high level of climatic variation. However, human-induced changes in climate are likely to exceed historical ranges of variability and rates of change, and have effects on forests well beyond the experience of forest managers. These conditions will require implementation of management practices appropriate to a changing climate. This paper provides an overview of the potential changes in climate in key forest-growing regions; current knowledge of the impacts of climate change on Australian forests, forest industries and forest-dependent communities; adaptation options; and approaches to potential climate change challenges. Developments in understanding are considered, and information gaps, research needs and policy changes required to support adaptation are discussed. In order to adapt well to a rapidly changing climate, forest managers will need to better understand how global climate change will impact on the local environment where their resources, assets and people are located, and consider their key vulnerabilities and how climate might affect their wider supply chains, inputs, customers and competitors. Improved monitoring can provide clear signals of change. New tools are required that integrate climate scenarios into organisational and business planning. Industry leaders will need to encourage experimentation, adopt greater flexibility in raw material supply sources, in species and genetic selection, and in plantation and native forest management practices, and have strategies in place to adapt quickly during periods of rapid change.
