We have carried out Raman spectroscopy experiments to investigate two-magnon excitations in epitaxial thin films of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under in-plane misfit strain. With in-plane biaxial compression, the energy of the two-magnon peak increases, and the peak remains observable over a wider temperature range above the N\'eel temperature, indicating strain-induced enhancement of the superexchange interactions between $\it{J}_{eff}$ = 1/2 pseudospins. From density functional theory calculations, we have found an increase of the nearest-neighbor hopping parameter and exchange interaction with increasing biaxial compressive strain, in agreement with the experimental observations. Our experimental and theoretical results provide perspectives for systematic, theory-guided strain control of the primary exchange interactions in 5$\it{d}$ transition metal oxides., Comment: 3 figures

We explore the response of Ir $5d$ orbitals to pressure in $\beta$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$, a hyperhoneycomb iridate in proximity to a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a reconstruction of the electronic ground state below 2 GPa, the same pressure range where x-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows an apparent collapse of magnetic order. The electronic reconstruction, which manifests a reduction in the effective spin-orbit (SO) interaction in $5d$ orbitals, pushes $\beta$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$ further away from the pure $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ limit. Although lattice symmetry is preserved across the electronic transition, x-ray diffraction shows a highly anisotropic compression of the hyperhoneycomb lattice which affects the balance of bond-directional Ir-Ir exchange interactions driven by spin-orbit coupling at Ir sites. An enhancement of symmetric anisotropic exchange over Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions seen in theoretical calculations that use precisely this anisotropic Ir-Ir bond compression provides one possible route to realization of a QSL state in this hyperhoneycomb iridate at high pressures.

One-dimensional (1D) quantum systems, which are predicted to exhibit novel states of matter in theory, have been elusive in experiment. Here we report a superlattice method of creating artificial 1D quantum stripes, which offers dimensional tunability from two- to one-dimensions. As a model system, we have fabricated 1D iridium (Ir) stripes using a-axis oriented superlattices of a relativistic Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 and a wide bandgap insulator LaSrGaO4, both of which are crystals with layered structure. In addition to the successful formation of 1D Ir-stripe structure, we have observed 1D quantum-confined electronic states from optical spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We discuss the possibility of a co-operative Kondo effect driven by channel interference in a Kondo lattice where local moments are coupled to a single Fermi sea via two orthogonal scattering channels. In this situation, the channel quantum number is not conserved. We argue that the absence of channel conservation causes the Kondo effect in the two channels to constructively interfere, giving rise to a superconducting condensate of composite pairs, formed between the local moments and the conduction electrons. Our arguments are based on the observation that a heavy Fermi surface gives rise to zero modes for Kondo singlets to fluctuate between screening channels of different symmetry, producing a divergent composite pair susceptibility. Secondary screening channels couple to these divergent fluctuations, promoting an instability into a state with long-range composite order. Contrary to current wisdom, additional screening channels appear to constitute a relevant perturbation which destabilizes the Fermi liquid. We study the ground state phase diagram of the pseudospin model introduced by Doniach to describe the essential physics of Kondo lattices. We use variational trial states which augment the usual mean field solution by incorporating various intersite correlations. A composite spin correlation describing the antiparallel alignment of fluctuating triplets is found to be particularly favourable for large Kondo couplings. With this trial state, the magnetic--to--Kondo transition is suppressed and the strong coupling ground state is ordered with strongly reduced moments.
