8. Influence of concentration and additives on R123/paraffinic material oil boiling heat transfer performance

Abstract

This report investigates the effect that oil concentration had on the boiling performance of an R123/paraffinic mineral oil mixture on a roughened, horizontal flat surface. For all compositions (0.5 %, 1 %, and 2 %), the lubricant caused a heat transfer degradation relative to the heat transfer of pure R123 of between 2 % and 70 % for the range of measured heat fluxes. The heat transfer degradation was shown to increase with lubricant mass fraction. The minimum heat transfer degradation for each mixture ranged between 2 % and 12 % and occurred at approximately 20 kW/m2. For a given composition, the heat transfer degradation increased as the heat flux increased from roughly 20 kW/m2 to 90 kW/m2. In addition, the effect of two trial additives on the pool boiling heat transfer of an R123/paraffinic mineral oil mixture was examined in order to test the validity of a theory for choosing oil additives to enhance boiling performance. The verification tests were inconclusive. More research with lubricants and additives with greater differences in surface tensions is required to develop a more rigorous and quantifiable theory for designing additives that improve boiling heat transfer.

Abstract

This article reports viscosity data on a series of colloidal dispersions collected as part of the International Nanofluid Property Benchmark Exercise (INPBE). Data are reported for seven different fluids that include dispersions of metal-oxide nanoparticles in water, and in synthetic oil. These fluids, which are also referred to as ‘nanofluids,’ are currently being researched for their potential to function as heat transfer fluids. In a recently published paper from the INPBE study, thermal conductivity data from more than 30 laboratories around the world were reported and analyzed. Here, we examine the influence of particle shape and concentration on the viscosity of these same nanofluids and compare data to predictions from classical theories on suspension rheology.

27. Anomalous Adverse Effect of Mass Velocity On Convective Flow Boiling in Small-Diameter Microfin Tubes

Abstract

Recent studies report an anomalous phenomenon, particularly for small diameter microfin tubes, where the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient decreases with increasing mass velocity in the convective regime, which is contrary to that found for smooth tubes and larger diameter microfin tubes. This paper presents a critical literature review and mechanistic analysis for the anomalous phenomenon. Our analysis suggests that the anomalous phenomenon is a result of the transition of annular flow pattern from “flooded-groove” (film thickness > fin height) to “in-groove” (film thickness < fin height). The latter is associated with lower degree of turbulence, smaller wetted area, and therefore smaller heat transfer coefficient than the former. It is speculated that the in-groove annular flow only occurs for small diameter tubes where the liquid film is relatively uniform, while larger tubes tend to remain flooded at the tube-bottom until dryout. This may explain the tendency of the anomalous phenomenon to occur in small diameter tubes.
