In the framework of the Standard Model Extension (SME), we present improved constraints on anisotropic Lorentz invariance and Charge-Parity-Time (CPT) violation by searching for astrophysical signals of cosmic vacuum birefringence with broadband optical polarimetry of high redshift astronomical sources, including Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma-Ray Burst afterglows. We generalize the work in Kislat 2018, which studied the SME mass dimension $d = 4$ case, to arbitrary mass dimension for both the CPT-even and CPT-odd cases. We then present constraints on all 10, 16, and 42 anisotropic birefringent SME coefficients for dimension $d = 4$, $d = 5$, and $d = 6$ models, respectively, using 7554 observations for odd d and 7376 observations for even d of 1278 unique sources on the sky, which, to our knowledge, comprises the most complete catalog of optical polarization from extragalactic sources in the literature to date. Compared to the smaller sample of 44 and 45 broadband optical polarimetry observations analyzed in Kislat 2018 and Kislat and Krawczynski 2017, our dimension $d = 4$ and $d = 5$ average constraints are more sensitive by factors of 35 and 10, corresponding to a reduction in allowed SME parameter space volume for these studies of 15 and 16 orders of magnitude, respectively. Constraints from individual lines of sight can be significantly stronger using spectropolarimetry. Nevertheless, due to the increased number of observations and lines of sight in our catalog, our average $d = 4$ and $d = 5$ broadband constraints are within factors of 2 and 12 of previous constraints using spectropolarimetry from Kislat 2018 and Kislat and Krawczynski 2017, respectively, using an independent data set and an improved analysis method. By contrast, our anisotropic constraints on all 42 birefringent SME coefficients for $d = 6$ are the first to be presented in the literature., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures

Vacuum birefringence from Lorentz and CPT violation in the Standard-Model Extension can be constrained using ground-based optical polarimetry of extragalactic sources. We describe results from a pilot program with an automated system that can perform simultaneous optical polarimetry in multiple passbands on different telescopes with an effective 0.45 m aperture. Despite the limited collecting area, our polarization measurements of AGN using a wider effective optical passband than previous studies yielded individual line-of-sight constraints for Standard-Model Extension mass dimension $d = 5$ operators within a factor of about one to ten of comparable broadband polarimetric bounds obtained using data from a 3.6 m telescope with roughly 64 times the collecting area. Constraining more general anisotropic Standard-Model Extension coefficients at higher $d$ would require more AGN along different lines of sight. This motivates a future dedicated ground-based, multi-band, optical polarimetry AGN survey with $\gtrsim 1$ m-class telescopes, to obtain state-of-the-art anisotropic Standard-Model Extension $d = 4, 5, 6$ constraints, while also using complementary archival polarimetry. Various quantum gravity approaches that extend beyond the standard model predict Lorentz Invariance and Charge-Parity-Time Violation at energies approaching the Planck scale. These models frequently predict a wavelength dependent speed of light, which would result in time delays between promptly emitted photons at different energies, as well as a wavelength-dependent rotation of the plane of linear polarization for photons resulting from vacuum birefringence. Here, we describe a pilot program with an automated system of small telescopes that can simultaneously conduct high cadence optical photometry and polarimetry of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in multiple passbands. We use these observations as a proof-of-principle to demonstrate how such data can be used to test various Lorentz Violation models, including special cases of the Standard Model Extension (SME). In our initial campaign with this system, the Array Photo Polarimeter, we observed two AGN sources, including BL Lacertae at redshift z = 0.069, and S5 B0716+714 at z = 0.31. We demonstrate that optical polarimetry with a broadband Luminance filter combined with simultaneous $I_c$-band observations yields SME parameter constraints that are up to ~10 and ~30 times more sensitive than with a standard $I_c$-band filter, for SME models with mass dimension d = 5 and d = 6, respectively. Using only a small system of telescopes with an effective 0.45-m aperture, we further demonstrate d = 5 constraints for individual lines of sight that are within a factor of ~1-10 in sensitivity to comparable constraints from optical polarimetry with a 3.6-m telescope. We demonstrate a technique for creating high quality, large area tunnel junction barriers for normal-insulating- superconducting or superconducting-insulating-superconducting tunnel junctions. We use atomic layer depo- sition and an aluminum wetting layer to form a nanometer scale insulating barrier on gold films. Electronic transport measurements confirm that single-particle electron tunneling is the dominant transport mechanism, and the measured current-voltage curves demonstrate the viability of using these devices as self-calibrated, low temperature thermometers with a wide range of tunable parameters. Cosmological Birefringence (CB), a rotation of the polarization plane of radiation coming to us from distant astrophysical sources, may reveal parity violation in either the electromagnetic or gravitational sectors of the fundamental interactions in nature. Until only recently this phenomenon could be probed with only radio observations or observations at UV wavelengths. Recently, there is a substantial effort to constrain such non-standard models using observations of the rotation of the polarization plane of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. This can be done via measurements of the $B$-modes of the CMB or by measuring its TB and EB correlations which vanish in the standard model. In this paper we show that $EB$ correlations-based estimator is the best for upcoming polarization experiments. The $EB$ based estimator surpasses other estimators because it has the smallest noise and of all the estimators is least affected by systematics. Current polarimeters are optimized for the detection of $B$-mode polarization from either primordial gravitational waves or by large scale structure via gravitational lensing. We study the effects of instrumental systematics on the estimation of primordial non-Gaussianity using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum from both the temperature and the polarization anisotropies. For temperature systematics we consider gain fluctuation and beam distortions. For polarization we consider effects related to known instrumental systematics: calibration, pixel rotation, differential gain, pointing, and ellipticity of the instrument beam. We consider these effects at next to leading order, which we refer to as non-linear systematic effects. We find that if the instrumental response is linearly proportional to the received CMB intensity, then only the shape of the primordial CMB bispectrum, if there is any, will be distorted. We show that the nonlinear response of the instrument can in general result in spurious non-Gaussian features on both the CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies, even if the primordial CMB is completely Gaussian. We determine the level for both the linear and non-linear systematics parameters for which they would cause no significant degradation of our ability to constrain the primordial non-Gaussianity amplitude f_{nl}. We find that the non-linear systematics are potentially bigger worry for extracting the primordial non-Gaussianity than the linear systematics. Especially because the current and near future CMB probes are optimized for CMB power-spectrum measurements which are not particularly sensitive to the non-linear instrument response. We find that if instrumental non-linearities are not controlled by dedicated calibration, the effective local non-Gaussianity can be as large as f_{nl} ~ O(10) before the corresponding non-linearities show up in the CMB dipole measurements. We present a method of cross-calibrating the polarization angle of a polarimeter using BICEP Galactic observations. \bicep\ was a ground based experiment using an array of 49 pairs of polarization sensitive bolometers observing from the geographic South Pole at 100 and 150 GHz. The BICEP polarimeter is calibrated to +/-0.01 in cross-polarization and less than +/-0.7 degrees in absolute polarization orientation. BICEP observed the temperature and polarization of the Galactic plane (R.A= 100 degrees ~ 270 degrees and Dec. = -67 degrees ~ -48 degrees). We show that the statistical error in the 100 GHz BICEP Galaxy map can constrain the polarization angle offset of WMAP Wband to 0.6 degrees +\- 1.4 degrees. The expected 1 sigma errors on the polarization angle cross-calibration for Planck or EPIC are 1.3 degrees and 0.3 degrees at 100 and 150 GHz, respectively. BICEP is a ground-based millimeter-wave bolometric array designed to target the primordial gravity wave signature on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at degree angular scales. Currently in its third year of operation at the South Pole, BICEP is measuring the CMB polarization with unprecedented sensitivity at 100 and 150 GHz in the cleanest available 2% of the sky, as well as deriving independent constraints on the diffuse polarized foregrounds with select observations on and off the Galactic plane. This chapter describes how the Cosmic Gravitational Wave Background induces a specific type of CMB polarization and describes the first experiment dedicated to testing this most-promising signature of inflation. This experiment, the Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP) project, has recently embarked on its third observing season. We show preliminary data from the BICEP's first season obtained with a novel polarization modulation mechanism called the "Faraday Rotation Modulator". We review current observational constraints on the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), with a particular emphasis on detecting the signature of primordial gravitational waves. We present an analytic solution to the Polanarev approximation for CMB polarization produced by primordial gravitational waves. This simplifies the calculation of the curl, or B-mode power spectrum associated with gravitational waves during the epoch of cosmological inflation. We compare our analytic method to existing numerical methods and also make predictions for the sensitivity of upcoming CMB polarization observations to the inflationary gravitational wave background. COMPASS is an on-axis 2.6 meter telescope coupled to a correlation polarimeter operating at a wavelength of 1 cm. The entire instrument was built specifically for CMB polarization studies. We report here on observations of February 2001 - April 2001 using this system. The coming flood of CMB polarization experiments, spurred by the recent detection of CMB polarization by DASI and WMAP, will be confronted by many new analysis tasks specific to polarization. For the analysis of CMB polarization data sets, the devil is truly in the details. With this in mind, we present the details of the data analysis for the POLAR experiment, which recently led to the tightest upper limits on the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation at large angular scales. We discuss the data selection process, mapmaking algorithms, offset removal, and the likelihood analysis which were used to find upper limits on the polarization. Stated using the modern convention for reporting CMB Stokes parameters, these limits are 5.0 \uK on both E-type and B-type polarization at 95% confidence. We describe the design and performance of a microwave polarimeter used to make precision measurements of polarized astrophysical radiation in three microwave frequency bands spanning 26-36 GHz. The instrument uses cooled HEMT amplifiers in a correlation polarimeter configuration to achieve high sensitivity and long-term stability. The instrument demonstrates long term stability and has produced the most restrictive upper limits to date on the large angular scale polarization of the 2.7 K cosmic microwave background radiation., Comment: Replaced with revised version. We present an upper limit on the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background at 7 degree angular scales in the frequency band between 26 and 36 GHz, produced by the POLAR experiment. The campaign produced a map of linear polarization over the R.A. range 112 degrees - 275 degrees at declination 43degrees. The model-independent upper limit on the E-mode polarization component of the CMB at angular scales l = 2 - 20 is 10 microKelvin (95% confidence). The corresponding limit for the B-mode is also 10 microKelvin.
