Karst regions, which account for about 15% of the terrestrial surface area, are characte-rized by specific hydrogeological structure different from most non-karst regions. Thus, many research methods that are used in non-karst regions cannot be directly used in karst regions. This issue is especially relevant to research on plant water sources. In this paper, origins and possible solutions to the common problems associated with research on water sources used by karst plant species were reviewed. Four questions were addressed: 1) why is it important to determine plant water source in karst regions? 2) Why are stable isotopes used? 3) What are the challenges associated with using stable isotopes in karst regions? 4) What are the probable solutions for these challenges? This review emphasized the advantages of using stable isotope techniques to identify sources of water used by karst plant species and the challenges associated with satisfying the prerequisites of this method. It is suggested that sources of water used by plant species in karst regions need not to be divided into specific depths and the method of identifying sources of water used by plant species based on their hydrologic properties was much applicable.占全球陆地面积约15%的喀斯特地区,有着不同于绝大多数非喀斯特地区的水文地质结构,使得许多在非喀斯特地区行之有效的研究方法难以直接用于喀斯特地区,而且这种限制在植物水分来源的研究上体现得尤为明显.本文从为什么要在喀斯特地区开展植物水分来源的研究、为什么一定要用稳定同位素的方法、使用该方法在喀斯特地区有何挑战,以及应对这些挑战的可能解决方案是什么等4个方面,综述了喀斯特地区植物水分来源研究普遍关注问题的由来和可能应对方案.文中重点阐述了与其他方法相比,稳定同位素技术在喀斯特地区植物水分来源研究中的优势以及难以完全满足其前提条件的挑战,结合现有相关研究的有益探索,提出在喀斯特地区的研究不必过分追求对各水源在具体深度上的细致划分,从水源特性的角度进行区分是更为适宜的途径.

The traditional hydrology method, stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope technology, and rainfall simulation method were combined to investigate the hydrological function of small experimental plots (2 m×1.2 m) of contrasting architecture in Northwest Guangxi dolomite area. There were four typical catenary soils along the dolomite peak-cluster slope, which were the whole-sand, up-loam and down-sand, the whole loam, up-clay and down-sand soil types, respectively. With the development of the binary structure of karst landforms, surface water is largely drained with rapid loss of nutrients. However, the pathway and mechanism of nutrient loss remain elusive. From a three-dimensional (vegetation-soil-epikarst system) perspective of a critical zone in karst area, this study conducted rainfall induced runoff and nitrogen loss monitoring during monsoon in karst shrub slopes. Based on three manually excavated trenches (projection length of 21 m, width of 1 m) along a typical Karst hillslope, the changing trends for soil-bedrock structure, average water content of soil profile and soil-bedrock interface water content along each individual trench were studied. The effect of irregular bedrock topography on soil moisture distribution was discussed. The results showed that the surface topography was inconsistent with the bedrock topography in the Karst hill-slopes. The bedrock topography was highly irregular with a maximum variation coefficient of 82%. The distribution pattern of soil profile of moisture was significantly affected by the underlying undulant bedrock. The soil water content was related to slope position when the fluctuation was gentle, and displayed a linear increase from upslope to downslope. When the bedrock fluctuation increased, the downslope linear increasing trend for soil water content became unapparent, and the spatial continuity of soil moisture was weakened. The soil moisture was converged in rock dents and cracks. The average water content of soil profile was significantly positively correlated with the soil-bedrock interface water content, while the latter responded more sensitively to the bedrock fluctuation.研究了喀斯特地区典型坡地3条人工开挖样沟(投影长21 m、宽1 m)的岩土结构特征、土壤剖面平均含水量和土岩界面含水量沿坡面向下的变化趋势,探讨了喀斯特坡地基岩起伏对土壤水分格局的影响.结果表明: 喀斯特坡地地表地形与基岩地形不一致,基岩深度变异系数最大为82%,基岩起伏较大.基岩起伏程度明显影响到土壤剖面水分分布格局: 基岩起伏较小时,土壤含水量呈上坡位至下坡位逐渐增加的趋势,且土壤剖面平均含水量和土岩界面含水量与基岩深度相关性均不显著;基岩起伏越大,土壤含水量沿坡向下线性增加的趋势越不明显,土壤水分空间连续性越差,基岩凹陷、裂隙处土壤含水量较高,土壤剖面平均含水量和土岩界面含水量与基岩深度呈极显著正相关,但后者对基岩起伏的响应更明显.

Vegetation types restrict soil structure and heterogeneous processes of elements, which result in difference in spatial distribution of soil nutrients. In this study, the differences in contents of soil nutrients, TN, TP, TK, and soil organic matter (SOM) among different vegetation types were analyzed, and the accuracy of ordinary kriging, regression model and regression model based on vegetation type in predicting soil nutrients was compared. The results showed that, TN, TK and SOM were significantly (P0.05) correlated to vegetation type, and TP had no significant correlation with vegetation type (P=0.390). TN and SOM had significant difference between shrubbery and arable land. TK had significant difference between arbor and scrub-grassland, shrubbery and arable land, and scrub-grassland and arable land, respectively. In a non-continuous typical small karst catchment, because of high spatial heterogeneity of terrain, the accuracy of multivariate linear regression model based on the real terrain factors of various points was considerably higher than that of ordinary kriging prediction method considering the locations of the known points and prediction points. Using stable isotope techniques, water sources and water use efficiencies of Eucalyptus urophylla ×E. grandis (exotic tree species) and Liquidambar formosana (native tree species, as a reference) were studied in a typical karst artificial forest, and the risk of drought stress of the plantation was discussed. The results showed that the isotope value of shallow soil water (0-50 cm) had obvious gradient features and was similar to the recent rain, while that of deep water was more stable and different from the shallow soil water. The soil water content in wet season (May and September) was higher than in dry season (October), and was higher in upslope than in downslope segment. The main water source of L. formosana was shallow soil water, which corresponded to high water use efficiency in different seasons. The main water sources for E. urophylla ×E. grandis on the upper slope and downslope segments were both shallow soil water in wet season, however, the sum of average water using the proportion of deep soil water increased for the downslope segment in the end of wet season. In dry season, E. urophylla ×E. grandis on the downslope segment mainly used shallow soil water, while it used deeper soil water on the upslope segment when soil water was relatively low. Meanwhile, the water use efficiency of E. urophylla ×E. grandis was lower compared with L. formosana, which revealed E. urophylla ×E. grandis did not get enough water supply under drought stress. The above results indicated that E. urophylla ×E. grandis would encounter high risk of water stress if extreme drought events happened in karst regions in the coming future.利用稳定性氢氧及碳同位素技术,与邻近乡土植物枫香比较,对喀斯特坡地尾巨桉水分来源与水分利用效率的季节性差异进行研究,分析喀斯特地区桉树人工林建设的干旱胁迫风险.结果表明: 浅层(0～50 cm)土壤水同位素值渐变特征明显且与近期雨水同位素值相近,而深层(50～100 cm)土壤水同位素值整体较稳定且明显区别于浅层.土壤含水量整体呈现雨季(5、9月)高于旱季(10月),且上坡高于下坡的基本特征.枫香不受旱、雨季土壤含水率差异的影响,始终以浅层土壤水为主要水源,水分利用效率持续较高.尾巨桉水分来源受不同季节、坡位土壤含水率差异的影响:雨季上坡以浅层土壤水为主,雨季下坡对深层土壤水利用比例明显增加;旱季上坡主要利用较深层水分,旱季下坡依赖浅层土壤水.桉树水分利用效率始终低于枫香,但旱季时显著升高.尾巨桉水分来源灵活多变,但干旱条件下水分利用效率显著升高,表明其并未能获得充足的水分供应,预示着生长速率及经济收益遭受负面影响,干旱致死的风险较高.

This study focused on bedrock outcrops, a very common habitat in karst region of southwest China. To reveal the responses of plant transpiration to natural rainfall and continuous drought, two tree species typical to this habitat, Radermachera sinica and Triadica rotundifolia, were selected as test materials. A rainout shelter was used to simulate continuous drought. The sap flow dynamics were monitored using the method of Granier's thermal dissipation probe (TDP). Our results showed that sap flow density increased to different degrees after rain in different stages of the growing season. Sap flow density of the deciduous species T. rotundifolia was always higher than that of the semi-deciduous species R. sinica. After two months without rainfall input, both species exhibited no obvious decrease in sap flow density, indicating that rainfall was not the dominant source for their water uptake, at least in the short-term. Based on the regression relationships between sap flow density and meteorological factors before and after rainfall, as well as at different stages of continuous drought, we found that the dynamics of meteorological factors contributed little to plant transpiration. The basic transpiration characteristics of both species were not changed in the circumstance of natural rainfall and short-term continuous drought, which would be closely related to the special water storage environments of bedrock outcrops and the reliance on deep water sources by tree species.以西南喀斯特地区常见的出露基岩生境为研究对象,针对该类生境典型乔木类植物菜豆树和圆叶乌桕,应用TDP热扩散探针技术,结合遮雨试验,分析了植物树干液流对自然降水和连续干旱的响应特征.结果表明: 在生长季不同时期,降水后2树种液流密度较降水前均有一定程度的升高,但始终呈现落叶乔木圆叶乌桕高于半落叶乔木菜豆树的特征;连续2个月遮雨条件下,2树种液流密度均无明显降低的趋势,表明2树种均不依赖受近期降水主导的水源;通过对降水前后及连续干旱条件下2树种液流密度与环境因子的拟合关系研究发现,气象因素差异对水分环境变化条件下植物蒸腾耗水的影响较小.自然降水和短时期的连续干旱并未显著改变2树种的蒸腾耗水特征,这可能与出露基岩生境特殊的水分蓄持环境和乔木类植物依赖相对稳定的深层水源有关.

Soil and epikarst co-evolve resulting in complex structures, but their coupled structural effects on hydrological processes are poorly understood in karst regions. This study examined the plot-scale subsurface flow characteristics from an integrated soil–epikarst system perspective in a humid subtropical cockpit karst region of Southwest China. A trench was excavated to the epikarst lower boundary for collecting individual subsurface flows in five sections with different soil thicknesses. Four field rainfall simulation experiments were carried out under different initial moisture conditions (dry and wet) and rainfall intensities (114 mm h− 1 (high) and 46 mm h− 1 (low) on average). The soil–epikarst system was characterized by shallow soil overlaying a highly irregular epikarst surface with a near-steady infiltration rate of about 35 mm h− 1. The subsurface flows occurred mainly along the soil–epikarst interface and were dominated by preferential flow. The subsurface flow hydrographs showed strong spatial variability and had high steady-state coefficients (0.52 and 0.36 for high and low rainfall intensity events). Irregular epikarst surface combining with high vertical drainage capacity resulted in high threshold rainfall depths for subsurface flows: 67 mm and 263 mm for initial wet and dry conditions, respectively. The above results evidenced that the irregular and permeable soil–epikarst interface was a crucial component of soil–epikarst architecture and consequently should be taken into account in the hydrological modeling for karst regions.

The complexity and depth of drilling are increasing constantly, so an advanced well control technology is required, and early kick detection as the key to well control is very important. Rapid and accurate kick detection helps to eliminate kick and rebalance the wellbore pressure, which not only improves drilling operation efficiency, but also reduces the probability of blowout, well collapse and other accidents. Accordingly, this paper has analyzed the applicable conditions, advantages and shortcomings, and field applications of the existing kick detection technology including mud pit surface detection, delta flow method, liquid level monitoring in the wellbore detection, gas invasion detection, kick detection while drilling, multi-parameter comprehensive detection system and comprehensive logging detection and analysis technology, and proposed the research trends and application suggestions of kick detection technology.

Legumes, with a strong resistance to the adverse environmental conditions, are pioneer plants in degraded habitats, and play an important role in ecosystem restoration. In this study, the nodulation characteristics of 24 legumes were surveyed in the Karst area of Northwest Guangxi. A total of 39 nodule samples were collected from 15 legumes, the DNA was extracted and the 16S rDNA and nifH gene were amplified. A phylogenetic tree was then constructed to analyze the genetic diversity of rhizobia. The results showed that 15 legumes were nodulated, of which 14 belonged to the Papilionoideae, one to the Mimosaceae, and none to the Caesalpinoideae. No nodules were found on some legumes that were reported as nodulated, which might result from soil water stress in Karst. BLAST result and phylogenetic analyse indicated that most of the legumes were associated with rhizobia that belonged to the genus Bradyrhizobium, with the exception of two samples from Callerya nitida that were associated with the genus Mesorhizobium. In the phylogenetic tree, the sequences obtained from the same plot or the sequences from the same host species clustered together in most cases. This finding suggested that host selection and the ecological environment are the major factors that influence the genotype of rhizobia.

The fallout radionuclide cesium-137 (Cs-137) has been widely employed as a tracer for assessment of soil loss from thick uniform soils; however, few studies have been conducted on thin stony soils on slopes underlain by carbonate rocks which are widely distributed in karst areas. Information derived from Cs-137 measurement of soil samples collected along a carbonate rock slope with thin stony soil where neither soil erosion nor deposition occurred was used to investigate the characteristics of Cs-137 redistribution in a karst area of Southwest China. The results indicated that the Cs-137 inventories of the surface soil on the slope studied were much lower than that of the local Cs-137 reference inventory and the Cs-137 activities were much higher than those on slopes with thick uniform soils. The spatial distribution of Cs-137 inventories was characterized by considerable variation. The high Cs-137 depletion in the stony soil of the slope studied was mainly because a considerable proportion of the fallout input of Cs-137 could be lost with runoff and the dissolution of carbonate particles in the soil promoted the loss of Cs-137. These demonstrated that the rates of soil loss could not be estimated from the degree of depletion of the Cs-137 inventory relative to the local reference inventory for the thin stony soil of the rocky slope underlain by carbonate rocks in the study area in the way that has been widely used in areas with thick uniform soils.

This study applies the ecological green equivalent approach to evaluating the land use structure of Mt. Yuelu scenic area in Hunan Province, China. A mathematical model is established based on land use and land cover data, and then ArcGIS used to extract the spatial extent of the ecological green equivalent within each of the relevant elements. Results show that the area has a relatively reasonable land use structure even though the forest coverage rate is slight below the optimum. The overall green equivalent (1.13) was higher than the optimum forest coverage ecological green equivalent (1.00). The distribution of forest was uneven, with most of the forest within the site; the area’s land use structure could thus be improved by extending the green area outside of Mt. Yuelu. We conclude by reiterating that landscape and infrastructure development should consider ecological system conditions.

The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has the special advantage in multi-indexes evaluation, and geographical information system (GIS) is good at spatial analysis. Combining AHP with GIS provides an effective means for studies of regional eco-environmental evaluation. Aiming at the regional features of eco-environment and main environmental problems of Hunan Province, the synthetic evaluation index system was set up including natural environment, disaster, environment pollution and social economy factors. Supported by GIS, taking the county as the evaluation unit, the regional eco-environmental information system database and evaluated the eco-environmental quality of Hunan Province were established. Based on the database and evaluation system, AHP, eco-environmental evaluation index method and spatial analysis were integrated into the eco-environmental quality evaluation in the study area. The results showed that 35.2% of the total land area in Hunan Province (approximately 68 462.45 km 2 ) maintains a good or better grade of the eco-environmental equality. However, 22.8% of the total area (approximately 44 345.00 km 2 ) was of a bad or worse grade of eco-environment quality. From the spatial distribution, the eco-environmental quality gradually decreased from the east to the west with exception in a few areas, which presented the obvious speciality of terrain. It was concluded that the current status of the integral eco-environment quality of Hunan Province was in the middle level, and highly intense human activities speeded up the degradation of regional eco-environments in recent years.

Surface soil water-physical properties play a decisive role in the dynamics of deep soil water. Knowledge of their spatial variation is helpful in understanding the processes of rainfall infiltration and runoff generation, which will contribute to the reasonable utilization of soil water resources in mountainous areas. Based on a grid sampling scheme (10 m x 10 m) and geostatistical methods, this paper aimed to study the spatial variability of surface (0-10 cm) soil water content, soil bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity on a typical shrub slope (90 m x 120 m, projected length) in Karst area of northwest Guangxi, southwest China. The results showed that the surface soil water content, bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity had different spatial dependence and spatial structure. Sample variogram of the soil water content was fitted well by Gaussian models with the nugget effect, while soil bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity were fitted well by exponential models with the nugget effect. Variability of soil water content showed strong spatial dependence, while the soil bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity showed moderate spatial dependence. The spatial ranges of the soil water content and saturated hydraulic conductivity were small, while that of the soil bulk density was much bigger. In general, the soil water content increased with the increase of altitude while it was opposite for the soil bulk densi- ty. However, the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity had a random distribution of large amounts of small patches, showing high spatial heterogeneity. Soil water content negatively (P0.01) correlated with the bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity, while there was no significant correlation between the soil bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity.

The stoichiometric properties of plant carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and their relationships with soil were studied in six dominant plant communities in three forest types, i.e., plantation forest, secondary forest and primary forest in depressions between karst hills, southwest China. The C, N and P contents of both plant and soil had significant differences among the different forest types. Soil C and N contents were the highest in the secondary forest and the lowest in the plantation forest. Soil P content was the highest in the plantation forest and the lowest in the primary forest. Plant C and P contents were in the order of plantation forestprimary forestsecondary forest, and plant N content was the highest in the plantation forest and the lowest in the primary forest. Soil N:P,C:P and plant C:P ratios were significantly higher in the primary forest than in the other two forest types. There were no significant difference for the soil C:N ratio among the three forest types. Plant N:P ratio was the highest in the secondary forest and the lowest in the plantation forest. Plant C:N ratio was in the order of primary forestplantation forestsecondary forest. There were significantly positive linear correlations between N and P contents, C:N and C:P ratios, C:P and N:P ratios of arbor leaves in the different forest types, and significant negative linear correlations between plant C:N and N:P ratios, and between soil C:N and N:P ratios. There were no significant correlations between plant and soil C, N, P contents and C:P ratio, suggesting that the supply of C, N and P from soil had little influence on plant C, N and P contents.

Occupation probability and changes of the environment in a dissipative two-state system have been investigated using a systematic approximate method. This method explores the tunneling dynamics through a system state vector with manifest physical meanings and provides a deep microscopic insight into the dynamical behaviors of the system.

A total of 163 soil samples (0-20 cm layer) were collected from the grid sampling plots (80 m x 80 m) in Huanjiang Observation and Research Station of Karst Ecosystem in a small catchment in Karst cluster-peak depression area, South China. By using classical statistics and geostatistics, the spatial heterogeneity of mineral components (SiO2, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, Al2O3, MnO, and TiO2) in the soils were studied. The contents of the seven soil mineral components in the study area differed greatly, being in the order of SiO2Al2O3CaOMgOFe2O3TiO2MnO, and the variance coefficients also varied obviously, in the order of CaOMgOFe2O3TiO2SiO2Al2O3MnO. The seven mineral components accounted for 69.4% of the total soil mass. The spatial patterns and the fittest models of the seven soil mineral components differed from each other. All the seven soil mineral components had a strong spatial autocorrelation, with shorter variation ranges and stronger spatial dependence. The Kriging contour maps indicated that the distribution patterns of soil SiO2, Fe2O3, Al2O3, MnO, and TiO2 were similar, being higher in south and east, lower in north and west, higher in depression, and lower in slope, while the distribution patterns of soil CaO and MgO were in adverse. Natural conditions (vegetation, bare rock rate, slope degree, and slope aspect, etc. ) and human disturbance were the most important factors affecting the spatial patterns of the soil mineral components.

Taking the typical karst peak-cluster depressions in Huanjiang County of northwest Guangxi as the objects, and by using the method of replacing time with space, an analysis was made on the dynamic changes of top soil (0-15 cm) nutrients and their dominant controlling factors during the process of vegetation succession. With the positive succession of vegetation (herb-shrub-secondary forest-primary forest), the soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) contents increased significantly, with the soil SOC, TN, and TP increased from 29.1 g x kg(-1), 2.48 g x kg(-1), and 0.72 g x kg(-1) in herb community to 73.9 g x kg(-1), 8.10 g x kg(-1), and 1.6 g x kg(-1) in primary forest, respectively, which indicated that the positive succession of vegetation was helpful to the soil nutrient accumulation. The soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) had close relationships with the soil SOC and TN, being the primary controlling factor for the accumulation of the soil C and N. The litter P content, C/P ratio, and N/P ratio were the major factors controlling the P accumulation in the topsoil. The litters higher P content and N/P ratio and smaller C/P ratio were helpful for the P accumulation. Topographic indices (slope, aspect, and rock exposure ratio) had little effects on the soil nutrients.

The polymers that have no ends and interact with a background tangent field u(x, t) are considered to act as the random walk subjected to a thermal noise η(t) and to a divergenceless random force u(x, t). Batchelor's suggestion for the diffusive behaviors of a single particle immersed in turbulent flows in extended to the case of polymers conformation. Based upon the assumption that the particle displacement has the Gaussian distribution for the long diffusion time, Flory's exponents are calculated to be ν = 1/2 for d ≥ 4 and ν = 3/(d+2) for d ≤ 4, in agreement with that of Kamien by the dynamical renormalization group method.

In the present paper, considering oriented polymers interacting with a background tangent field u, the Flory exponent v is self-consistently calculated to be v = 3/(d+ 2) for d≤4 and v = 1/2 for d≥4 using the renormalization theory for turbulent transport. The results of this paper agree with that of Kamien [J. Phys. (Paris) I, 3, 1663 (1993)] by the dynamical renormalization-group method.

Karst regions are typically ecological fragile zones constrained by geological setting, which resulted in high heterogeneity of vegetation standing conditions. The karst vegetation was featured with stone, dry and high calcium carbonate content growth conditions. Based on vegetation spectral analysis and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), the present study aimed to examine the feasibility of using vegetation spectra to monitor the heterogeneous karst standing conditions. The results showed that there were significant differences between karst vegetation and non-karst vegetation within the spectral range of 1 300-2 500 nm reflectance and 400 - 680 nm first-derivative spectra. It was found that soil moisture and calcium carbonate contents had the most significant effects on vegetation spectral features in karst regions. Ordination diagrams of CCA could distinguish the differences of karst vegetation and non-karst vegetation. Our study demonstrates that vegetation spectra are highly related to karst standing conditions and it is feasible to monitor karst standing conditions with vegetation spectral features.

Soil profiles were collected from three primary forests (Itoa orientalis, Platycladus orientalis, and Radermachera sinica) in Karst cluster-peak depression region to study the composition of soil aggregates, their organic carbon contents, and the profile distribution of the organic carbon. In the three forests,2 mm soil aggregates were dominant, occupying about 76% of the total. The content of soil total organic carbon ranged from 12.73 to 68.66 g x kg(-1), with a significant difference among the forests. The organic carbon content in1 mm soil aggregates was slightly higher than that in2 mm soil aggregates, but most of soil organic carbon was stored in the soil aggregates with greater particle sizes. About 70% of soil organic carbon came from2 mm soil aggregates. There was a significant positive relationship between the contents of 2-5 and 5-8 mm soil aggregates and the content of soil organic carbon. To increase the contents of 2-8 mm soil aggregates could effectively improve the soil carbon sequestration in Karst region. In Itoa orientalis forest, 2-8 mm soil aggregates accounted for 46% of the total, and the content of soil total organic carbon reached to 37.62 g x kg(-1), which implied that Itoa orientalis could be the suitable tree species for the ecological restoration in Karst region.

This paper studied the profile distribution characters of 137Cs and soil organic carbon (SOC) on the Karst slopes and in the fissures in typical peak-cluster depression in Northwest Guangxi, aimed to approach the applicability of 137Cs method on Karst slopes and the implication of 37Cs for the characteristics of slope soil erosion. In all test profiles, there was a significant correlation between 137Cs and SOC, indicating that both of them might have the same loss pathway. On the slopes under secondary forests, 137Cs mainly existed within the depth 0-24 cm. On the upper middle and middle slope sites, 137Cs had an exponential decrease with depth, indicating no or slight surface erosion; while on the foot slope site, the distribution pattern of 137Cs indicated severer erosion. On the slopes with cultivated lands, 137Cs distributed uniformly within the plough layer. In the upper middle and middle slopes profiles, 137Cs mainly existed in the depth around 15 cm and far less than the background value, indicating severe soil erosion; while in foot slope profiles, 137Cs was aggraded to the depth 45 cm. A discontinuous distribution of 137Cs in the profiles was detected on the foot slopes under secondary forests, on the upper middle and foot slopes of cultivated lands, and in the fissures, indicating that the soil particles on Karst slopes had a trend of losing with rainwater to the underground, but the loss quantity was negligible, compared with surface erosion.

Plant water source depends on the distribution of available water in the environment, and the capability of plants in capturing water. In dry season, the soil water in thin soil region cannot satisfy the demand of normal plant growth, and whether the plants can use the water stored in weathered bedrock is the key for them to maintain their normal water consumption. This paper reviewed the research methods for determining the plant water source in thin soil region, including investigating and analyzing the characteristics of root growth and distribution, monitoring the changes of water content at various depths below ground surface, monitoring and analyzing the seasonal variation of plant water status, and identifying the plant water source by stable isotope techniques. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods and their potential applications in tracing plant water source in karst region of Southwest China were discussed.

Soil samples were collected from the grassland, shrub land, secondary forest, and original forest on the hill slope in a typical karst peak-cluster depression area of northwest Guanxi, with the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of soil physical properties investigated by classical statistics, and the formation causes of the heterogeneity analyzed by redundancy analysis (RDA). In 0-15 cm soil layer, the clay (0.002 mm) and silt (0.002-0.05 mm) contents of shrub land and original forest had significant differences with those of grassland and secondary forest, respectively, but the clay, silt, and sand (0.05-2.0 mm) contents had no significant differences between grassland and secondary forest. No significant difference was observed in the soil sand content among the four land types, but the soil bulk density of grassland was significantly different from that of other three land types. The soil clay content of grassland increased with increasing elevation, while that of the other three land types was the highest on medium slope, and had no significant differences for the same land types among different slope locations. The soil clay content in different layers of 0-30 cm had a greater variation extent in original forest (14.55%) than in grassland (7.12%), shrub land (11.24%), and secondary forest (13.77%), and the soil particle size composition was greatly affected by the disturbance of human activities. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and vegetation type were the dominant factors affecting the soil physical properties, and the bare rock ratio had greater effects on soil sand content.

A new theoretical method has been developed to deal with ion acoustic soliton in collisionless plasma with cold ions (TcTi). The analytical soliton solution can be found from the magnetic hydrodynamics equation other than from the usual KdV equation.

Karst rocky desertification is one of the most serious eco-environmental problems of land degradation in karst regions, southwest China. The fractional cover of vegetation and exposed bedrock are the main land surface symptoms and essential assessing indicators of karst rocky desertification. To assess the extent of rocky desertification in complex karst environments, the information of multiple land cover types fraction is needed. Based on in situ spectral reflectance data, this study proposed several spectral indices and explored the relationship between spectral features of main land cover types and their responding fractional cover. The results showed that spectral indices have much higher correlation coefficients with fractional cover than does spectral reflectance. Vegetation indices have good linear relation with fractional cover of photosynthetic vegetation (PV). The proposed spectral indices have high correlation coefficients with fractional cover of non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV) and bare soil, with R2 0.70 and 0.73, respectively. Lower correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.55) with the factional cover of exposed bedrock, were observed. The absorption depth of four forms of the proposed indices has the highest correlation coefficient with the fractional cover of NPV, bare soil, and exposed rock. This study indicates that hyperspectral remote sensing has the potential for the extraction of karst rocky desertification information.

This paper investigated the spatial variability of the correlations between grain yields and fertilization quantity within the selected agricultural watershed, in the typical black soil region, and then optimized the fertilization quantity at different landscape farmlands within the watershed based on the regression equations. Study simulated the surface runoff water quality before and after fertilization spatial adjustment with the achieved parameters by Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The results showed that watershed scale fertilization adjustment is possible and necessary according to the spatial heterogeneity about fertilization and grain yields. Based on grain yield stability, spatial adjustment of fertilization reduced the whole watershed total N fertilization quantity by 1.88%, and the total non-point nutrients load reduction of NH4+ -N and NO3- -N was 9.7%, 5.6%, respectively.

Soil samples were collected from the depression (200 m x 100 m) in Karst area's Mulun National Nature Reserve by grid sampling method (20 m x 20 m), with the spatial heterogeneity of soil nutrients analyzed by the methods of classic statistics and geo-statistics. The soil pH showed small variation, while the soil nutrients showed moderate variation, being in the order of available phosphorus (AP)available potassium (AK)available nitrogen (AN)organic matter (OM)total potassium (TK)total phosphorus (TP)total nitrogen (TN). Spherical model fitted best for soil pH, exponential model fitted best for soil TK and AK, and Gaussian model fitted best for other variables. The variation range of soil pH and AK was smaller, being 58.1 m and 41.1 m, respectively, that of soil OM, TN, TP, AN, and AP was from 100 m to 150 m, and that of soil TK was the largest (463.5 m). Soil TK and TN showed moderate spatial autocorrelation, while other soil nutrients showed strong spatial autocorrelation. Soil pH and AK presented fragmented patch distribution, showing high heterogeneity, while soil OM, TP, and TK changed gently, high in the middle and low in two sides. The spatial patterns of soil AN and AP were similar, i.e., increased with landform slope. Soil TN had a distribution pattern of low in the middle and high in two sides. Vegetation, topography, and high heterogeneity of micro-habitat were the main factors caused the differences of the spatial distribution patterns of soil nutrients in the Reserve.

Taking the soils developed on limestone and sandstone and with typical land use patterns in Karst region of Northwest Guangxi as test objects, this paper studied their soil fertility under effects of parent rock and land use pattern. A total of eleven soil fertility variables were selected for factor analysis, and the component score for each sampling site was assessed by using principal component analysis (PCA) sequencing and clustering diagram. The factor analysis indicated that the eleven variables could be reduced to four components, i.e., overall soil fertility, soil pH and total phosphorus, soil available phosphorus, and soil total potassium. The PCA sequencing and clustering analysis showed that the overall soil fertility was mainly affected by land use pattern, being the highest in abandoned farmland. Soil pH and total phosphorus content were mainly affected by parent rock. The pH value and total phosphorus content in the red soil developed on sandstone were much lower than those in the calcareous soil developed on limestone. Soil available phosphorus and total potassium contents were significantly affected by fertilization. The available phosphorus and total potassium contents in Karst calcareous soil and red soil were lower than the average level of China soils. Therefore, the Karst calcareous soil should be fertilized with ammonium nitrogen fertilizer to improve its phosphorus availability, while the Karst red soil should be amended with lime to increase its available phosphorus content. In addition, potassium fertilizer should be applied to the two soil types to improve their soil fertility.

Based on 3S technique, this paper examined the responses of ecosystem service values (ESVs) to the landscape pattern change in the typical Karst area of northwest Guangxi, China in 1985, 1990, 2000 and 2005. The ESVs in the study area had close relations to landscape area, fragmentation degree, complexity of patch shape, areas of critical type, patch connectivity, and patch richness. It was linearly positively correlated with landscape area and had curvilinear positive correlations with patch index (LPI), contagion index (CONTAG), aggregative index (AI), effective mesh (MESH), proportion of like adjacencies (PLADJ), and tended to be increased with increasing patch area and patch connectivity of critical landscape type. The ESVs had curvilinear negative correlations with division index (DIVISION), split index (SPLIT), and patch richness (PRD), and decreased with increasing patch fragmentation and shrinking patch size. Therefore, it would be important to protect the critical landscape types such as woodland, shrub, and grassland, and to increase the patch size and connectivity to 'avoid further fragmentation. Moreover, it would be necessary to reduce the frequency and severity of disturbances to ensure the ESVs growth and the sustainable development of the study area.

Based on the field survey and the analysis of a large number of soil samples, the distribution of 137 Cs and its influencing factors were studied using 137 Cs tracer technology on typical karst sloping land. The results indicate that the distribution of 137 Cs in soil profile in karst areas show the similar characteristics as that in non-karst areas, fitted an exponential pattern in forest soils and a uniform pattern in cultivated soils. In the sinkhole points in karst areas, 137 Cs exists in deep soil layers and its specific activity vary from 1.7 to 3.3 Bq/kg in soil layers above 45cm, suggesting the existing soil around karst sinkhole is mainly formed by the accumulation of erosion materials. The 137 Cs specific activity in the soil from two rock cracks are 16.8 Bq/kg and 37.6 Bq/kg respectively, which are much higher than that in the soil around the rock, this phenomenon indicates that bare rock is an important influencing factor for 137 Cs spatial movement. With the increment of altitude, the 137 Cs area activity exhibits an irregular fluctuation and evident spatial heterogeneity. On the forest land, the 137 Cs area activities which range from 299.4 to 1 592.6 Bq/m2 are highly positively correlated with the slope gradient and positively correlated with the altitude; while on the cultivated land, the 137 Cs area activities which range from 115.8 to 1478.6 Bq/m2 are negatively correlated with the slope gradient but negatively correlated with the altitude. Topography, geomorphology and human disturbance intensity are the key factors influencing 137 Cs spatial distribution.

A new concise approach is presented for analytic study of the properties of the Holstein model. New analytic results for the polaronic band structure and phonon distribution, of the Holstein molecular crystal model, are given in one dimension. And all analytic results given are in accordance with the known numerical research results.

Stable isotope techniques provide a new approach to study soil water movement. The process of water movement in soils under two kinds of plant types (oil tea and corn) were studied based on the observed values of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of precipitation and soil water at different depths in red-soil sloping land. The results showed that stable isotopes of precipitation in this area had obvious seasonal effect and rainfall effect. The stable isotopes at 0-50 cm depth in oil tea forestland and at 0-40 cm depth in corn cropland increased with the increase in depth, respectively, but they had the opposite tendency after rainfall in arid time. The stable isotopes decreased with the increase in depth below 50 cm depth in oil tea forestland and below 40 cm depth in corn cropland where evaporation influence was weak. The infiltrate rate of soil in oil tea land was affected by precipitation obviously, and it was about 50-100 mm/d after 2-3 days in heavy rain, slowed sharply later, and soil water at 50 cm depth often became a barrier layer. The permeability of soil in corn land was poor and the infiltration rate was lower. The change of stable isotopes in soil water in red soil hilly region was mainly affected by the mixing water which was formed by the antecedent precipitation, and evaporation effect took the second place. The evaporation intensity in oil tea land was lower than that in corn land, but the evaporation depth was higher.

By using geostatistic methods, this paper studied the spatial variation and distribution of soil organic matter as well as its ecological processes and related mechanisms in four typical disturbed areas (cropland, man-made forest, secondary forest, and primary forest) of karst peak cluster depressions in northwest Guangxi of China. Eighty soil samples (0-20 cm) were collected from an aligned grid of 10 m x 10 m for the analysis of soil organic matter. The soil organic matter content increased significantly (P0.05) with the decrease of disturbance and the vegetation succession from crop to man-made forest to secondary forest to primary forest. Soil organic matter content had good spatial autocorrelation in all of the four typical disturbed areas, but its spatial heterogeneity differed. Gaussian model fitted best to the semivariance functions of soil organic matter content in the study areas except secondary forest area where exponential model fitted well. In cropland area, the spatial autocorrelation of soil organic matter was at medium level, with the C0/(C0 + C) being 26.5%; while in the other three areas, the spatial autocorrelation was at high level, with the C0/(C0 + C) being 9.0%-22.6%. The range and scale of the spatial autocorrelation of soil organic matter in cropland and man-made forest areas were larger than those in the other two areas, possibly due to the strong human disturbance and the homogeneity of low energy. The range of the spatial autocorrelation of soil organic matter in primary forest area was large due to the high vegetation coverage, while that in secondary forest area was the lowest due to the diverse vegetation communities and their uneven distribution. The low fractal value (D) of semivariance functions of soil organic matter in man-made forest and primary forest areas suggested that a strong spatial dependence existed, while the high D in cropland and secondary forest areas suggested a great random variance of spatial distribution of soil organic matter occurred. The spatial pattern of soil organic matter presented a unimodal distribution in cropland and man-made forest areas, a concave distribution in secondary forest area, and a gibbous distribution in primary forest area. To reduce human disturbance would be helpful to the soil quality improvement, rapid vegetation restoration, and ecological reconstruction of karst degenerative ecosystems.

By using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), sixteen landscape indices were adopted to quantitatively analyze the relationships between the landscape structure and rocky desertification in karst region of Huanjiang County, Guangxi Province. The results showed that the first and the second ordination axis of CCA were strongly correlated to the factors of average patch area, average dry land patch area, landscape shape index, and landscape aggregation index. The potential rocky desertification in the region was highly positively correlated with the average dry land patch area and the average fractal dimensions of dry land and shrub land, but negatively correlated with the patch numbers of dry land. Light rocky desertification had obvious positive correlations with the fractal dimension index, average fractal dimension of unused land, and patch numbers of shrub land; while moderate and strong rocky desertification had high positive correlations with the average unused land patch area but negative correlation with the average fractal dimension of shrub land. To some extent, rocky desertification degree might be represented by the values of landscape indices. The gradient variation in karst rocky desertification along landscape structure was clearly presented by the results of CCA.

Based on GIS and RS, the landscape pattern change in the middle and upper reaches of Dongting Lake watershed from 1980 to 2000 was studied, with its driving forces analyzed. The results showed that there was a remarkable difference in the area change of various landscape types, with the sequence of forest landmountain paddy fieldopen forest land. This change mainly occurred in mountainous and hilly areas, and had a decreasing trend from the east to the west, i. e., decreased in the order of Xiangshui River valleyZishui River valleyYuanshui River valleyLishui River valley. The patch shape was simple and regular from 1980 to 1995, but diversified from 1995 to 2000. The main driving forces of the landscape pattern change were the pressure of booming farming population on natural ecosystem, the dependence of watershed' s development on natural resources, the investment to protect and improve the functions of natural ecosystem, and the adjustment of agricultural polices.

Selecting the main land use types (shrub land, secondary forest land, orchard, pasture land, and upland) at the peak-cluster depression in karst region of Northwest Guangxi as test objects, this paper studied the effects of different land use types on soil nutrients. The results showed that, the contents of soil organic matter (SOM), total N, and available N were 86%-155%, 62% -119%, and 66%-215% higher in shrub land and secondary forest land than in orchard, pasture land, and upland, respectively, i. e., increased with the decrease of land use intensity. The contents of soil total P and K were mainly controlled by their origins, but less affected by land use type. Soil available P content was mainly affected by fertilization, while soil available K content was controlled by vegetation cover and water- and soil loss. Land use type was the dominant factor affecting the contents of soil SOM, total N, and available N, P and K. Extensive cultivation could decrease soil nutrient contents and lead to the degradation of cropland soil, while ecological restoration could improve soil fertility. Therefore, in karst region, the measures as changing extensive cultivation into intensive farming, applying organic fertilizers, balance fertilization, and "Grain for Green Project" foror = 25 degrees slope should be taken to recover and rebuild the eco-environment, and keep the sustainable utilization of land resources.

CO2 fluxes in rice paddy ecosystem in subtropical hilly region were measured continuously using eddy covariance technique. The objectives were to investigate the responses of CO2 fluxes to light intensity and temperature in the paddy ecosystem. Results showed a rectangular hyperbolic light-response function could be used to describe the relationship of CO2 flux and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The absolute values of CO2 fluxes increased with the increment of PPFD. When PPFD was higher than 1000 micromol/(m2 x s), the maximum was observed. CO2 fluxes responded differently to light between early and late rice. Values of quantum yield of late rice (0.0465-0.0999 micromol/micromol) were general higher than that of early rice (0.0176-0.0541 micromol/micromol). Moreover, the quantum yield and the maximum rate of photosynthesis assimilation in the blooming stage were higher than that in tillering and ripening stages. In nighttime, respiration from soil and plants (ecosystem respiration, Reco) changed exponentially with the increase of soil temperature at the depth of 5 cm (T5), 10 cm (T10), and 20 cm (T20), respectively. Whereas, T5 was more feasible than others to be considered as the temperature parameter for Reco calculation. During early rice growing season, Reco was more sensitive to temperature change than that during late rice growing season.

Karst region is a typical ecological fragile zone, with small environmental and anti-interference capability. Many environment factors, such as different land use, elevation and topographic relief, have significant influence on spatial variability of soil properties, resulting in abnormal fragments of landscape and severe rocky desertification. The method of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was employed to reveal the relationships between soil and environment in peak-cluster depression areas of karst region, using the samples from field survey in Guzhou. Results show that spatial variability of TN, AN, SOC, AP, AK and C/N are greater than TP, TK, and pH, with the similar trend among TN, AN and SOC. Furthermore, CCA shows that SOC, TN and AN have high correlation with bare rock rate and grade, AK and vegetation type, together with the significant correlation between C/N and soil depth, while the environment has little effect on TK, TP and pH. Environmental factors that affect soil properties are listed as the following order: land usevegetation typebare rock rateaspectsoil depthelevation. Except TK and pH, soil properties are significantly affected by different land-use types.

The relationship between landscape pattern and ecological process is one of the key issues in landscape ecology. Both the species protection and the bio-disaster prevention are closed linked with the landscape pattern of organism's habitat. Taking Dongting Lake area as a case, this paper studied the characteristics of landscape pattern in typical sampling plots, and analyzed the correlation of mouse capture rate in farmland and in house with the indices reflecting the characteristics of landscape pattern. The results showed that the mouse capture rate in farmland correlated significantly with the landscape aggregation, connection, and mosaic shape, while that in house had a significant correlation with the mosaic shape of construction land. Some suggestions on reducing mouse pest were put forward from the viewpoint of landscape pattern.

To study the endogenous hormone of testosterone and cortisol that secretes volume and rhythm in sports fatigued human bodies and animals. To determine secretory volume and rhythm in sports fatigued human bodies and animals when Shixiang yaofa's drug are used.Radio-immunity method was used to determine secretory volume and rhythm in sports fatigued human bodies and animals and to analyze secretory volume and rhythm. According to the secretory volume and rhythm of testosterone and cortisol, the Shixiang Yaofa's drugs were used. Doses: wenyang jihuo bead 10 g/sack 2 sack, ziyin xiuyang capsule 0.5 g/pill 8 pill pd in human bodies for 28 days. Wenyang jihuo bead 10 g x kg(-1) of crude drug, ziyin xiuyang capsule 4 g x kg(-1) of crude drug pd for hight doses in animals. Other groups for low doses 5 g x kg(-1) and 2 g x kg(-1) of crude drug pd for 15 days. The blood samples were collected for determination.(1) In human bodies the peak value of testosterone was appeared in 8:00 and valley value was appeared in 18:00, ranges: 176.93-281.73 x 10(-5) mg x L(-1). The peak value of cortisol was appeared in 8:00 and valley value was appeared in 22:00, ranges: 1.31-16.13 x 10(-3) mg x L(-1). In the same condition, the mouse peak value of testosterone was appeared in 20:00 and valley value was appeared in 0:00, ranges: (0.56 x 10(-5) - 124.0 x 10(-5)) mg x L(-1). The rhythm in animals was compatible with human bodies, howerer, the peak value was delayed for 12 hours. (2) The testosterone was step up and the cortisol was cut down in sports fatigued human bodies and animals when shixiang yaofa's drug were used (P0.05, P0.01).The secretion of testosterone and cortisol in sports fatigued human bodies and animals are existed conclusive biologic rhythm. The secretory volume can be available accommodation by shixiang yaofa's drugs.

This paper studied the effects of planting pattern and bare rock ratio on the spatial distribution of soil nutrients in Karst depression area of northwest Guangxi. The results showed that planting pattern had significant effects on soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), and C/N. Bare rock ratio also had significant effects on SOC, TN, TP, TK, AN, AK and C/N, and was the crucial factor in determining the spatial variability of SOC, TN, TP and AN, which was mainly due to the higher intensity of cultivation in the places covered with less bare rock. Fields planted with Cajanus cajan-Castanca mollissima had significantly higher contents of SOC, TN, TN, TK, AN, and AK than those with other planting patterns, suggesting that converting farmland into forestland had positive effects on the accumulation of soil nutrients. Due to the effects of local topography and land use structure, foot slope had a higher content of SOC than depression, while fertilization made the depression have a higher content of AP than foot slope.

CO2 fluxes from paddy ecosystem in subtropical hilly region were measured continuously using eddy covariance technique. Based on data rejecting, correcting and filling, the daily and annual CO2 fluxes were calculated from the instantaneous values, respectively. The objectives were to investigate the variation of CO2 fluxes on seasonal temporal scale, analyze the relationship between CO2 fluxes and environmental factors, and to quantify the annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE) from the paddy ecosystem. Results show the values of GPP, R(eco) and NEE are higher from Jun. to Sep. and lower in the other months. The NEE from May to Sep. accounted for above 80% of the annual value and is crucial to the whole annual value. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and mean daily air temperature (T(a)) were two main influential factors for controlling the seasonal trend of GPP and NEE and could be described by binary linear functions, respectively. The annual NEE in paddy ecosystem was 2 475.6 g/(m2 x a). This is showed that paddy ecosystem was a carbon sink for the atmosphere in subtropical region.
