- Abstract
Trees structure the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1–6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth’s 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world’s most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

Astrophysics - Abstract
AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. We observed the cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.175), with ISOCAM on board the Infrared Space Observatory, using two filters with reference wavelengths of 6.7 and 14.3 microns. We detected 67 extragalactic mid-infrared sources. Using the ``GRASIL'' models of Silva et al. (1998) we have obtained acceptable and well constrained fits to the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 41 of these sources, for which additional optical/near-infrared magnitudes, and, in some cases, redshifts, were available. We have then determined the total infrared luminosities and star formation rates (SFRs) of these 41 sources, of which 27 are cluster members and 14 are field galaxies at a median redshift z~0.6. The SEDs of most of the ISOCAM cluster members are best fit by models with negligible star formation in the last ~1 Gyr. The 7 faintest cluster members have a slightly higher, but still very mild, star-formation activity. The ISOCAM-selected cluster galaxies appear to be an unbiased subsample of the overall cluster population. If A2218 is undergoing a merger, as suggested by some optical and X-ray analyses, then this merger does not seem to affect the mid-infrared properties of its galaxies. The SEDs of most ISOCAM-selected field sources are best fit by models with significant ongoing (and recent) star formation, resembling those of massive star-forming spirals or (post)starburst galaxies. ISOCAM was used to perform a deep survey through three gravitationally lensing clusters of galaxies. Nearly seventy sq. arcmin were covered over the clusters A370, A2218 and A2390. We present maps and photometry at 6.7 & 14.3 microns, showing a total of 145 mid-IR sources and the associated source counts. The 15 micron counts reach the faintest level yet recorded. All sources have counterparts in the optical or near-IR. Models of the clusters were used to correct for the effects of lensing, which increases the sensitivity of the survey. Seven of fifteen SCUBA sources were detected at 15 microns. Five have redshift between 0.23 & 2.8, with a median of 0.9. The field sources were counted to a lensing-corrected sensitivity of 30 microJy at 15 microns, and 14 microJy at 7 microns. The counts, corrected for completeness, contamination by cluster sources and lensing, confirm and extend findings of an excess by a factor of ten in the 15 micron population with respect to source models with no evolution. Source redshifts are mostly between 0.4 and 1.5. For the counts at 7 microns, integrating from 14 microJy to 460 microJy, we resolve 0.49+/-0.2 nW.m^(-2).sr^(-1) of the infrared background light (IBL) into discrete sources. At 15 microns we include the counts from other ISOCAM surveys to integrate from 30 microJy to 50 mJy, two to three times deeper than unlensed surveys, to resolve 2.7+/-0.62 nW.m^(-2).sr^(-1) of the IBL. These values are 10% and 55%, respectively, of the upper limit to the IBL, derived from photon-photon pair production of the TeV gamma rays from BL-Lac sources on the IBL photons. Using an atom-vacancy exchange algorithm, we investigate the kinetics of the order-disorder transition in an fcc A_3B binary alloy model following a temperature quench from the disordered phase. We observe two clearly distinct ordering scenarios depending on whether the final temperature T_f falls above or below the ordering spinodal T_{sp}, which is deduced from simulations at equilibrium. For shallow quenches (T_f>T_{sp}) we identify an incubation time tau_{inc} which characterizes the onset of ordering through the formation of overcritical ordered nuclei. The algorithm we use together with experimental information on tracer diffusion in Cu_3Au alloys allows us to estimate the physical time scale connected with tau_{inc} in that material. Time-dependent density functional theory, proposed recently in the context of atomic diffusion and non-equilibrium processes in solids, is tested against Monte Carlo simulation. In order to assess the basic approximation of that theory, the representation of non-equilibrium states by a local equilibrium distribution function, we focus on one-dimensional lattice models, where all equilibrium properties can be worked exactly from the known free energy as a functional of the density. This functional determines the thermodynamic driving forces away from equilibrium. In our studies of the interfacial kinetics of atomic hopping and spin relaxation, we find excellent agreement with simulations, suggesting that the method is useful also for treating more complex problems., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. The sample consists of 34 HII regions located at galactocentric distances between Rgal = 0 and 15 kpc. The SWS HI recombination lines between 2 and 8 mum are used to estimate the extinction law at these wavelengths for 14 HII regions. An extinction in the K band between 0 and $\sim$ 3 mag. has been derived. The fine-structure lines of N, O, Ne, S and Ar are detected in most of the sources. Most of these elements are observed in two different ionization stages probing a range in ionization potential up to 41 eV. The ISO data, by itself or combined with radio data taken from the literature, is used to derive the elemental abundances relative to hydrogen. We present photometric ISO 60 and 170um measurements, complemented by some IRAS data at 60um, of a sample of 84 nearby main-sequence stars of spectral class A, F, G and K in order to determine the incidence of dust disks around such main-sequence stars. Of the stars younger than 400 Myr one in two has a disk; for the older stars this is true for only one in ten. We conclude that most stars arrive on the main sequence surrounded by a disk; this disk then decays in about 400 Myr. Because (i) the dust particles disappear and must be replenished on a much shorter time scale and (ii) the collision of planetesimals is a good source of new dust, we suggest that the rapid decay of the disks is caused by the destruction and escape of planetesimals. We suggest that the dissipation of the disk is related to the heavy bombardment phase in our Solar System. Whether all stars arrive on the main sequence surrounded by a disk cannot be established: some very young stars do not have a disk. The Infrared Space Observatory observed the field of the $\gamma$--ray burst GRB 970508 with the CAM and PHT instruments on May 21 and 24, 1997 and with PHT in three filters in November 1997. A source at 60 $\mu$m (flux in May of $66\pm 10$ mJy) was detected near the position of the host galaxy of this $\gamma$--ray burst. The source was detected again in November 1997, at a marginally lower flux ($43\pm 13$ mJy). A Galactic cirrus origin and a stellar origin for the emission can be ruled out on the basis of the infrared colours. The marginal evidence for variability in the 60 $\mu$m flux between May and November is not sufficient to warrant interpretation of the source as transient fireball emission. However, the infrared colours are physically reasonable if attributed to conventional dust emission from a single blackbody source. The probability of detecting a 60 $\mu$m by chance in a PHT beam down to a detection limit of 50 mJy is $\sim 5\times 10^{-3}$. If the source is at the redshift of the host galaxy of the $\gamma$--ray burst the fluxes and upper limits at wavelengths from 12 $\mu$m to 170 $\mu$m indicate it is an ultraluminous infrared galaxy (L$_{\rm ir} \sim 2\times 10^{12}$ L$_{\sun}$). The star formation rate is estimated to be several hundred solar masses per year, depending significantly on model-dependent parameters. If this source is associated with the host galaxy of GRB 970508, progenitor models which associate GRBs with star-forming regions are favoured., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present imaging results and source counts from a deep ISOCAM cosmological survey at 15 microns, through gravitationally lensing galaxy clusters. We take advantage of the cluster gravitational amplification to increase the sensitivity of our survey. We detect a large number of luminous mid-IR sources behind the cluster lenses, down to very faint fluxes, which would have been unreachable without the gravitational lensing effect. These source counts, corrected for lensing distortion effects and incompleteness, are in excess of the predictions of no-evolution models that fit local IRAS counts. By integrating the 15 microns source counts from our counts limit, 30 microJy, to 50 mJy we estimate the resolved mid-IR background radiation intensity., Comment: 5 pages, three figures. We present imaging results and source counts from an ISOCAM deep and ultra-deep cosmological survey through gravitationally lensing clusters of galaxies at 7 and 15 microns. A total area of about 53 sq.arcmin was covered in maps of three clusters. The lensing increases the sensitivity of the survey. A large number of luminous mid-infrared (MIR) sources were detected behind the lenses, and most could be unambiguously identified with visible counterparts. Thanks to the gravitational amplification, these results include the faintest MIR detections ever recorded, extending source counts to an unprecedented level. The source counts, corrected for cluster contamination and lensing distortion effects, show an excess by a factor of 10 with respect to the prediction of a no-evolution model, as we reported for A2390 alone in Altieri et al. (1999). These results support the A2390 result that the resolved 7 and 15 microns background radiation intensities are 1.7 (+/- 0.5) x 10^-9 and 3.3 (+/- 1.3) x 10^-9 W/m^2/sr, respectively, integrating from 30 microJy to 50 mJy., Comment: Downward revised estimate of the background mid-IR light

We report on the mid-IR imaging at 7 and 10 microns of the galaxy cluster Abell 370, obtained with the ISOCAM instrument onboard ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), as part of an ongoing program to image gravitational arcs and arclets in distant clusters. We have recorded initial detections of the A0 giant arc in both bandpasses, the two central dominant galaxies at 7 microns, and several other cluster members and field galaxies. The accuracy of memory for recent events is reported to decay between young adulthood and middle age in humans (Crook et al., 1990; Crook and West, 1990; Thomas et al., 1977) due to impairments in acquisition and/or retention (Craik, 1977; Huppert and Kopelman, 1989). Effects of this kind are also found in comparisons of middle-aged (12-18 months) vs. young adult (3 months) rats in tests requiring retention of recently sampled spatial cues (Kadar et al., 1990a; Kadar et al., 1990b; Goudsmit et al., 1990; Weiss and Thompson, 1991). The causes of such changes in memory processing are unknown but might be expected to involve age-related losses in forebrain glutamate receptors (Bahr et al., 1992; Magnusson and Cotman, 1993; Wenk et al., 1991); these receptors mediate fast excitatory transmission in many brain regions and play an essential role in the production of long-term potentiation (LTP), a form of synaptic plasticity that has been implicated in memory encoding (Landfield and Lynch, 1977; Moore et al., 1993). In the present communication we report results indicating that a drug that enhances AMPA-type glutamate receptors acts centrally to selectively increase hippocampal spatial cell firing and improves both acquisition performance and memory retention in middle-aged rats to levels equivalent to those found in young adult animals.

42. Prevalence and correlates of 30-day suicidal ideation and intent: Results of the South African National Student Mental Health Survey

BACKGROUND: Although suicide prevention is recognised as a priority among university students in South Africa (SA), it is unclear what proportion of students require urgent indicated interventions and what the characteristics are of these students OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of 30-day suicidal ideation, frequency of ideation and self-reported intention to act on ideation in the next year among a national sample of SA university students METHODS: Self-report cross-sectional data were collected online from students (N=28 268) at 17 universities across SA as part of the national student mental health survey. Students reported suicidal ideation in the past 30 days, frequency of ideation and intention to act on ideation in the next year. Data were weighted within institutions by gender and population group, and across the four main types of universities (historically white, historically disadvantaged, technical and distance learning) to correct for response rate discrepancies. Prevalence was estimated with these weighted in the total sample and across types of universities. Poisson regression with robust error variances was used to investigate associations of sociodemographic characteristics with ideation and intention to act on suicidal ideation. Results are reported as relative risks (RRs) with design-based 95% confidence intervals (CIs RESULTS: Thirty-day prevalence of suicidal ideation was 24.4% (standard error (SE) 0.3), with 2.1% (SE 0.1) and 4.1% (SE 0.1), respectively, reporting suicidal ideation all/almost all the time, or most of the time. A total of 1.5% (SE 0.1) of respondents reported being very likely to act on their suicidal ideation, while 3.9% (SE 0.2) were somewhat likely, 8.7% (SE 0.2) were not very likely and 85.8 (SE 0.5) either reported no suicidal ideation or that they were not at all likely to act on this ideation. Risk of suicidal ideation with high intent in the total sample was elevated among females (RR 1.9, 95% CI 1.3 - 2.7) and gender non-conforming students (RR 4.3, 95% CI 1.4 - 13.0) relative to males, black African students compared with white students (RR 3.6, 95% CI 1.9 - 7.1), students whose parents did not progress to secondary school compared with students whose parents had a university education (RR 1.6, 95% CI 1.0 - 2.5) and sexual minority students compared with heterosexual students (RR 1.9, 95% CI 1.3 - 2.6). Among students with 30-day ideation (controlling for frequency of ideation), only two of these predictors of high intent remained significant: identifying as black African (RR 2.7, 95% CI 1.4 - 5.1), and having parents with less than secondary education (RR 1.5, 95% CI 1.0 - 2.1 CONCLUSION: Scalable suicide prevention interventions are needed to reach the large number of SA students who report suicidal ideation with intent

BackgroundEvidence regarding favorable treatment of patients with functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) using transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is constantly growing. However, there is only few data directly comparing TEER and surgical mitral valve repair (SMVr).AimsTo compare baseline characteristics, short-term and 1-year outcomes in FMR patients undergoing mitral valve (MV) TEER or SMVr using a meta-analytic approach.MethodsSystematic database search identified 1,703 studies reporting on TEER or SMVr for treatment of FMR between January 2010 and December 2020. A meta-analytic approach was used to compare outcomes from single-arm and randomized studies based on measures by means of their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Statistical significance was assumed if CIs did not overlap. A total of 21 TEER and 37 SMVr studies comprising 4,304 and 3,983 patients were included.ResultsPatients in the TEER cohort presented with higher age (72.0 ± 1.7 vs. 64.7 ± 4.7 years, p < 0.001), greater burden of comorbidities like hypertension (p < 0.001), atrial fibrillation (p < 0.001), lung disease (p < 0.001) and chronic renal disease (p = 0.005) as well as poorer left ventricular ejection fraction (30.9 ± 5.7 vs. 36.6 ± 5.3%, p < 0.001). In-hospital mortality was significantly lower with TEER [3% (95%-CI 0.02–0.03) vs. 5% (95%-CI 0.04–0.07)] and 1-year mortality did not differ significantly [18% (95%-CI 0.15–0.21) vs. 11% (0.07–0.18)]. NYHA [1.06 (95%-CI 0.87–1.26) vs. 1.15 (0.74–1.56)] and MR reduction [1.74 (95%-CI 1.52–1.97) vs. 2.08 (1.57–2.59)] were comparable between both cohorts.ConclusionDespite considerably higher age and comorbidity burden, in-hospital mortality was significantly lower in FMR patients treated with TEER, whereas a tendency toward increased 1-year mortality was observed in this high-risk population. In terms of functional status and MR grade reduction, comparable 1-year results were achieved.
