Shortcuts to adiabaticity provide fast protocols for quantum state preparation in which the use of auxiliary counterdiabatic controls circumvents the requirement of slow driving in adiabatic strategies. While their development is well established in simple systems, their engineering and implementation are challenging in many-body quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. We show that the equation for the counterdiabatic term—equivalently, the adiabatic gauge potential—is solved by introducing a Krylov basis. The Krylov basis spans the minimal operator subspace in which the dynamics unfolds and provides an efficient way to construct the counterdiabatic term. We apply our strategy to paradigmatic single- and many-particle models. The properties of the counterdiabatic term are reflected in the Lanczos coefficients obtained in the course of the construction of the Krylov basis by an algorithmic method. We examine how the expansion in the Krylov basis incorporates many-body interactions in the counterdiabatic term.

Abstract Most cases of colorectal cancers (CRCs) are microsatellite stable (MSS), which frequently demonstrate lower response rates to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). RNA editing produces neoantigens by altering amino acid sequences. In this study, RNA editing was induced artificially by chemoradiation therapy (CRT) to generate neoantigens in MSS CRCs. Altogether, 543 CRC specimens were systematically analyzed, and the expression pattern of ADAR1 was investigated. In vitro and in vivo experiments were also performed. The RNA editing enzyme ADAR1 was upregulated in microsatellite instability–high CRCs, leading to their high affinity for ICIs. Although ADAR1 expression was low in MSS CRC, CRT including oxaliplatin (OX) treatment upregulated RNA editing levels by inducing ADAR1. In Asia, four harmful raphidophyte species, Chattonella malayana, C. marina, C. subsalsa, and C. tenuiplastida, coexist in the tropical waters but only C. marina was detected in temperate waters. This occurrence pattern pointed to a potentially distinct ecophysiological niche occupancy and possible species dispersion. The growth physiology of these species isolated from tropical Southeast Asia was investigated using unialgal cultures in ten temperatures (13.0–35.5°C) and five salinities (15–35) to better understand the factors driving their distribution. The highest maximum specific growth rates were observed in C. subsalsa (0.65 ± 0.01 d-1), followed by C. malayana (0.47 ± 0.03 d-1), C. marina (0.45 ± 0.02 d-1), and C. tenuiplastida (0.39 ± 0.01 d-1). Their optimal temperatures were 28.0, 30.5, 25.5, and 30.5°C, respectively, of which C. marina preferred colder water. C. subsalsa exhibited a wider growth temperature range (20.5–35.5°C), followed by C. marina (20.5–30.5°C), C. tenuiplastida (23.0–33.0°C), and C. malayana (25.5–33.0°C). Optimal salinities were similar between C. subsalsa and C. malayana (30), and between C. marina and C. tenuiplastida (25), but C. subsalsa and C. marina exhibited a similar growth salinity range of 15–35, while C. malayana and C. tenuiplastida was 20–35. High values of Fv/Fm were observed in C. subsalsa and C. marina (> 0.5) in all tested conditions, but Fv/Fm of C. malayana and C. tenuiplastida were significantly lower at 20.5°C. All four species achieved a maximum cell density of > 104 cells mL-1 in their optimal conditions. Optimal temperatures in C. subsalsa and C. marina were identical to previous reports. The high adaptability of C. subsalsa in various temperatures and salinities suggests its high competitiveness and bloom potential. The high adaptability of C. marina in colder waters compared to other species likely contributes to its wide distribution in the temperate Asian waters. The narrow temperature window of C. malayana and C. tenuiplastida suggests their endemicity and limited distribution in the tropical waters. This study provides evidence about the occurrences and bloom potential of Chattonella spp. in Asia, but the endemicity versus dispersion issue remains unresolved.

Microalgae are an important renewable source of carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. In this study, indigenous microalgal strains from fresh, brackish, and marine waters of Peninsular Malaysia were isolated, purified, and cultured. The potential of microalgae as a natural source of lipids and carotenoids was studied using a screening test with Nile red fluorescence dye to examine the lipid and carotenoid contents. Of 125 microalgae strains, nine strains isolated from marine and brackish water samples (Chaetoceros gracilis, Chlorella sp., C. sorokiniana, C. vulgaris, Tisochrysis lutea, Nitzschia capitellata, Oocystella heteromucosa, Oocystis marina, and Thalassiosira weissflogii) showed high fluorescence intensities. Next, the biochemical composition of these nine strains was examined. Thalassiosira weissflogii (strain TRG10-p105) showed the highest production of n-3 PUFAs and carotenoids among the nine strains. This strain produced high levels of n-3 PUFAs, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). In this strain, the EPA contents relative to the dry weight (DW) and total fatty acid content (10.8% and 21.4%, respectively) were considerably higher than those reported in species currently used in industrial applications, such as aquaculture. Thalassiosira weissflogii TRG10-p105 had the highest total carotenoid content (20.2 mg g−1 DW), primarily because of its high fucoxanthin content (11.5 mg g−1 DW). The findings of this study indicate that T. weissflogii TRG10-p105 can serve as a high-value microalgal strain from tropical regions that produces n-3 PUFAs and carotenoids in abundance. Because a high ammonium tolerance was observed in this strain, its large-scale production can be implemented in ammonium-rich water produced from waste products to reduce the cost of algae production.

Quantum speed limits (QSLs) provide lower bounds on the minimum time required for a process to unfold by using a distance between quantum states and identifying the speed of evolution or an upper bound to it. We introduce a generalization of QSL to characterize the evolution of a general operator when conjugated by a unitary. The resulting operator QSL (OQSL) admits a geometric interpretation, is shown to be tight, and holds for operator flows induced by arbitrary unitaries, i.e., with time- or parameter-dependent generators. The derived OQSL is applied to the Wegner flow equations in Hamiltonian renormalization group theory and the operator growth quantified by the Krylov complexity.

Abstract Objective Swallowing is a unique movement due to the indispensable orchestration of voluntary and involuntary movements. The transition from voluntary to involuntary swallowing is executed within milliseconds. We hypothesized that the underlying neural mechanism of swallowing would be revealed by high‐frequency cortical activities. Methods Eight epileptic participants fitted with intracranial electrodes over the orofacial cortex were asked to swallow a water bolus and cortical oscillatory changes, including the high γ band (75–150 Hz) and β band (13–30 Hz), were investigated at the time of mouth opening, water injection, and swallowing. Results Increases in high γ power associated with mouth opening were observed in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) with water injection in the lateral central sulcus and with swallowing in the region along the Sylvian fissure. Mouth opening induced a decrease in β power, which continued until the completion of swallowing. The high γ burst of activity was focal and specific to swallowing; however, the β activities were extensive and not specific to swallowing. In the interim between voluntary and involuntary swallowing, swallowing‐related high γ power achieved its peak, and subsequently, the power decreased. Interpretation We demonstrated three distinct activities related to mouth opening, water injection, and swallowing induced at different timings using high γ activities. The peak of high γ power related to swallowing suggests that during voluntary swallowing phases, the cortex is the main driving force for swallowing as opposed to the brain stem.

We extend the speed limit of a distance between two states evolving by different generators for quantum systems [K. Suzuki and K. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 032016(R) (2020)2643-156410.1103/PhysRevResearch.2.032016] to the classical stochastic processes described by the master equation. We demonstrate that the trace distance between arbitrary evolving states is bounded from above by using a geometrical metric. The geometrical bound reduces to the Fisher information metric for the distance between the time-evolved state and the initial state. We compare the bound in relaxation and annealing processes with a different type of bound known for nonequilibrium thermodynamical systems. For dynamical processes such as annealing and pumping processes, the distance between the time-evolved state and the instantaneous stationary state becomes a proper choice and the bound is represented by the Fisher information metric of the stationary state. The metric is related to the counterdiabatic term defined from the time dependence of the stationary state.

Abstract Mangrove-dwelling microalgae are well adapted to frequent encounters of salinity fluctuations across their various growth phases but are lesser studied. The current study explored the adaptive changes (in terms of biomass, oil content and fatty acid composition) of mangrove-isolated C. vulgaris UMT-M1 cultured under different salinity levels (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 ppt). The highest total oil content was recorded in cultures at 15 ppt salinity (63.5% of dry weight) with uncompromised biomass productivity, thus highlighting the ‘trigger-threshold’ for oil accumulation in C. vulgaris UMT-M1. Subsequently, C. vulgaris UMT-M1 was further assessed across different growth phases under 15 ppt. The various short, medium and long-chain fatty acids (particularly C20:0), coupled with a high level of C18:3n3 PUFA reported at early exponential phase represents their physiological importance during rapid cell growth. Accumulation of C18:1 and C18:2 at stationary growth phase across all salinities was seen as cells accumulating substrate for C18:3n3 should the cells anticipate a move from stationary phase into new growth phase. This study sheds some light on the possibility of ‘triggered’ oil accumulation with uninterrupted growth and the participation of various fatty acid types upon salinity mitigation in a mangrove-dwelling microalgae.

Abstract Bioprospecting for biodiesel potential in microalgae primarily involves a few model species of microalgae and rarely on non-model microalgae species. Therefore, the present study determined changes in physiology, oil accumulation, fatty acid composition and biodiesel properties of a non-model microalga Messastrum gracile SE-MC4 in response to 12 continuous days of nitrate-starve (NS) and nitrate-replete (NR) conditions respectively. Under NS, the highest oil content (57.9%) was achieved despite reductions in chlorophyll content, biomass productivity and lipid productivity. However, under both NS and NR, palmitic acid and oleic acid remained as dominant fatty acids thus suggesting high potential of M. gracile for biodiesel feedstock consideration. Biodiesel properties analysis returned high values of cetane number (CN 61.9–64.4) and degree of unsaturation (DU 45.3–57.4) in both treatments. The current findings show the possibility of a non-model microalga to inherit superior ability over model species in oil accumulation for biodiesel development.

Messastrum gracile SE-MC4 is a non-model microalga exhibiting superior oil-accumulating abilities. However, biomass production in M. gracile SE-MC4 is limited due to low cell proliferation especially after prolonged cultivation under oil-inducing culture conditions. Present data consist of next generation RNA sequencing data of M. gracile SE-MC4 under exponential and stationary growth stages. RNA of six samples were extracted and sequenced with insert size of 100 bp paired-end strategy using BGISEQ-500 platform to produce a total of 59.64 Gb data with 314 million reads. Sequences were filtered and de novo assembled to form 53,307 number of gene sequences. Sequencing data were deposited in National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and can be accessed via BioProject ID PRJNA552165. This information can be used to enhance biomass production in M. gracile SE-MC4 and other microalgae aimed towards improving biodiesel development.

Fucoxanthin is one of the light-harvesting pigments in brown microalgae, which is increasingly gaining attention due to its numerous health-promoting properties. Currently, the production of microalgal fucoxanthin is not yet feasible from an economic perspective. However, the cultivation of microalgae at favourable conditions holds great potential to increase the viability of this fucoxanthin source. Hence, this study aimed to review the fucoxanthin production of microalgae under different conditions systematically. A literature search was performed using the Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed databases. A total of 188 articles were downloaded and 28 articles were selected for the current review by two independent authors. Microalgae appeared to be a more reliable fucoxanthin source compared to macroalgae. Overall, a consensus fucoxanthin production condition was obtained and proposed: light intensity ranging from 10 to 100 µmol/m2/s could achieve a higher fucoxanthin content. However, the optimal light condition in producing fucoxanthin is species-specific. The current review serves as an antecedent by offering insights into the fucoxanthin-producing microalgae response to different culture factors via a systematic analysis. With the current findings and recommendations, the feasibility of producing fucoxanthin commercially could be enhanced and possibly achieve practical and sustainable fucoxanthin production.

Genome determines the unique individualities of organisms; however, proteins play significant roles in the generation of the colorful life forms below water. Aquatic systems are usually complex and multifaceted and can take on unique modifications and adaptations to environmental changes by altering proteins at the cellular level. Proteomics is an essential strategy for exploring aquatic ecosystems due to the diverse involvement of proteins, proteoforms, and their complexity in basic and advanced cellular functions. Proteomics can expedite the analysis of molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes in an aquatic environment. Previous proteomic studies on aquatic environments have mainly focused on pollution assessments, ecotoxicology, their role in the food industry, and extraction and identification of natural products. Aquatic protein biomarkers have been comprehensively reported and are currently extensively applied in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Cellular- and molecular-level responses of organisms can be used as indicators of environmental changes and stresses. Conversely, environmental changes are expedient in predicting aquatic health and productivity, which are crucial for ecosystem management and conservation. Recent advances in proteomics have contributed to the development of sustainable aquaculture, seafood safety, and high aquatic food production. Proteomic approaches have expanded to other aspects of the aquatic environment, such as protein fingerprinting for species identification. In this review, we encapsulated current proteomic applications and evaluated the potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of proteomics for future aquatic environmental studies. The review identifies both pros and cons of aquatic proteomics and projects potential challenges and recommendations. We postulate that proteomics is an emerging, powerful, and integrated omics approach for aquatic environmental studies.

Summary: Swallowing is attributed to the orchestration of motor output and sensory input. We hypothesized that swallowing can illustrate differences between motor and sensory neural processing. Eight epileptic participants fitted with intracranial electrodes over the orofacial cortex were asked to swallow a water bolus. Mouth opening and swallowing were treated as motor tasks, whereas water injection was treated as a sensory task. Phase-amplitude coupling between lower-frequency and high γ (HG) bands (75–150 Hz) was investigated. An α (10–16 Hz)-HG coupling appeared before motor-related HG power increases (burst), and a θ (5–9 Hz)-HG coupling appeared during sensory-related HG bursts. The peaks of motor-related coupling were 0.6–0.7 s earlier than that of HG power. The motor-related HG was modulated at the trough of the α oscillation, and the sensory-related HG amplitude was modulated at the peak of the θ oscillation. These contrasting results can help to elucidate the brain's sensory motor functions.

The labile fraction of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) – predominantly consisting of phosphoric esters – is an important microbial P source in the subtropical oligotrophic ocean. However, unlike phosphate, knowledge for labile DOP is still limited due to the scarcity of broad and intensive observations. In this study, we examined the concentrations and size-fractionated hydrolysis rates of labile phosphoric monoesters and diesters along a >10,000 km longitudinal transect in the North Pacific (23°N; upper 200-m layer). Depth-integrated monoesters decreased westward with a maximum difference of fivefold. Vertical profiles of monoesters in the eastern and western basins showed decreasing and increasing trends with depth, respectively. The monoester-depleted shallow layer of the western basin was associated with phosphate depletion and monoesterase activity was predominant in the large size fraction (>0.8 μm), suggesting that monoesters are significant P sources particularly for large microbes. In contrast, diester concentrations were generally lower than monoester concentrations and showed no obvious horizontal or vertical variation in the study area. Despite the unclear distribution pattern of diesters, diesterase activity in the particulate fraction (>0.2 μm) increased in the phosphate-depleted shallow layer of the western basin, suggesting that the targeted diesters in the assay were also important microbial P sources. Antioxidants found in microalgae play an essential role in both animals and humans, against various diseases and aging processes by protecting cells from oxidative damage. In this study, 26 indigenous tropical marine microalgae were screened. Out of the 26 screened strains, 10 were selected and were further investigated for their natural antioxidant compounds which include carotenoids, phenolics, and fatty acids collected in their exponential and stationary phases. The antioxidant capacity was also evaluated by a total of four assays, which include ABTS, DPPH, superoxide radical (O2•–) scavenging capacity, and nitric oxide (•NO–) scavenging capacity. This study revealed that the antioxidant capacity of the microalgae varied between divisions, strains, and growth phase and was also related to the content of antioxidant compounds present in the cells. Carotenoids and phenolics were found to be the major contributors to the antioxidant capacity, followed by polyunsaturated fatty acids linoleic acid (LA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (ARA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) compared to other fatty acids. The antioxidant capacity of the selected bacillariophytes and haptophytes was found to be positively correlated to phenolic (R2-value = 0.623, 0.714, and 0.786 with ABTS, DPPH, and •NO–) under exponential phase, and to carotenoid fucoxanthin and β-carotene (R2 value = 0.530, 0.581 with ABTS, and 0.710, 0.795 with O2•–) under stationary phase. Meanwhile, antioxidant capacity of chlorophyte strains was positively correlated with lutein, β-carotene and zeaxanthin under the exponential phase (R2 value = 0.615, 0.615, 0.507 with ABTS, and R2 value = 0.794, 0.659, and 0.509 with •NO–). In the stationary phase, chlorophyte strains were positively correlated with violaxanthin (0.755 with •NO–), neoxanthin (0.623 with DPPH, 0.610 with •NO–), and lutein (0.582 with •NO–). This study showed that antioxidant capacity and related antioxidant compound production of tropical microalgae strains are growth phase-dependent. The results can be used to improve the microalgal antioxidant compound production for application in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, and feed industry.

The effect of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on swallowing function in movement disorders is unclear. Here, we systematically reviewed this topic by searching keywords following PICOS strategy of problem (swallowing or swallow or dysphagia or aspiration) and intervention (deep brain stimulation, or DBS) in the PubMed and Web of Science in English in April 2020, with comparators [subthalamic nucleus (STN), globus pallidus interna (GPi), ventralis intermedius, (ViM), post-subthalamic area, or caudal zona incerta (PSA/cZi); ON/OFF DBS state/settings, ON/OFF medication state, Parkinson's disease (PD), dystonia, tremor], outcomes (swallowing function measures, subjective/objective) and study types (good quality original studies) in mind. We found that STN DBS at usual high-frequency stimulation could have beneficial effect (more so on subjective measures and/or OFF medication), no effect, or detrimental effect (more so on objective measures and/or ON medication) on swallowing function in patients with PD, while low-frequency stimulation (LFS) could have beneficial effect on swallowing function in patients with freezing of gait. GPi DBS could have a beneficial effect (regardless of medication state and outcome measures) or no effect, but no detrimental effect, on swallowing function in PD. GPi DBS also has beneficial effects on swallowing function in majority of the studies on Meige syndrome but not in other diseases with dystonia. PSA/cZi DBS rarely has detrimental effect on swallowing functions in patients with PD or tremor. There is limited information on ViM to assess. Information on swallowing function by DBS remains limited. Well-designed studies and direct comparison of targets are further needed.

Advancement in dysphagia intervention is hindered by our lack of understanding of the neural mechanisms of swallowing in health and disease. Evoking and understanding neural activity in response to normal and disordered swallowing is essential to bridge this knowledge gap. Building on sensory evoked potential methodology, we developed a minimally invasive approach to generate swallow evoked potentials (SwEPs) in response to repetitive swallowing induced by citric acid stimulation of the oropharynx in lightly anesthetized healthy adult rats. The SwEP waveform consisted of 8 replicable peaks within 10 milliseconds immediately preceding the onset of electromyographic swallowing activity. Methodology refinement is underway with healthy rats to establish normative SwEP waveform morphology before proceeding to models of advanced aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Ultimately, we envision that this experimental protocol may unmask the pathologic neural substrates contributing to dysphagia to accelerate the discovery of targeted therapeutics.

We derive generalized quantum speed limit inequalities that represent limitations on the time evolution of quantum states. They are extensions of the original inequality and are applied to the overlap between the time-evolved state and an arbitrary state. We can discuss the lower limit of the Bures angle, in addition to the upper limit as in the original inequality, which allows us to evaluate the lower and upper bounds of processing time for the evolution toward a target state. The inequalities are written by using an arbitrary reference state and are flexibly used to obtain a tight bound. We demonstrate these properties by using the twisted Landau–Zener model, the Grover Hamiltonian, and a periodically-oscillating Hamiltonian.

Previous studies have shown short-term plasticity in single neurons or local field potentials during brain-machine interface (BMI) training. Here the authors report long-term changes in functional connectivity of motor cortex neuronal ensemble activity as chronically amputated monkeys learn to operate a BMI.

Abstract Dinitrogen fixation, the biological reduction in N2 gas to ammonia contributes to the supply of new nitrogen in the surface ocean. To understand the diversity and abundance of potentially diazotrophic (N2 fixing) microorganisms associated with marine zooplankton, especially copepods, the nifH gene was studied using zooplankton samples collected in the Pacific Ocean. In total, 257 nifH sequences were recovered from 23 nifH‐positive DNA extracts out of 90 copepod samples. The nifH genes derived from cyanobacteria related to Trichodesmium, α‐ and γ‐subdivisions of proteobacteria, and anaerobic euryarchaeota related to Methanosaeta concilii were detected. Our results indicated that Pleuromamma, Pontella, and Euchaeta were the major copepod genera hosting dinitrogen fixers, though we found no species‐specific association between copepods and dinitrogen fixers. Also, the digital PCR provided novel data on the number of copies of the nifH gene in individual copepods, which we report the range from 30 to 1666 copies per copepod. This study is the first systematic study of zooplankton‐associated diazotrophs, covering a large area of the open ocean, which provide a clue to further study of a possible new hotspot of N2 fixation.

The quantum speed limit specifies a universal bound of the fidelity between the initial state and the time-evolved state. We apply this method to find a bound of the fidelity between the adiabatic state and the time-evolved state. The bound is characterized by the counterdiabatic Hamiltonian and can be used to evaluate the worst case performance of the adiabatic quantum computation. The result is improved by imposing additional conditions and we examine several models to find a tight bound. We also derive a different type of quantum speed limit that is meaningful even when we take the thermodynamic limit. By using solvable spin models, we study how the performance and the bound are affected by phase transitions.

The phase-reset model of oscillatory EEG activity has received a lot of attention in the last decades for decoding different cognitive processes. Based on this model, the ERPs are assumed to be generated as a result of phase reorganization in ongoing EEG. Alignment of the phase of neuronal activities can be observed within or between different assemblies of neurons across the brain. Phase synchronization has been used to explore and understand perception, attentional binding and considering it in the domain of neuronal correlates of consciousness. The importance of the topic and its vast exploration in different domains of the neuroscience presses the need for appropriate tools and methods for measuring the level of phase synchronization of neuronal activities. Measuring the level of instantaneous phase (IP) synchronization has been used extensively in numerous studies of ERPs as well as oscillatory activity for a better understanding of the underlying cognitive binding with regard to different set of stimulations such as auditory and visual. However, the reliability of results can be challenged as a result of noise artifact in IP. Phase distortion due to environmental noise artifacts as well as different pre-processing steps on signals can lead to generation of artificial phase jumps. One of such effects presented recently is the effect of low envelope on the IP of signal. It has been shown that as the instantaneous envelope of the analytic signal approaches zero, the variations in the phase increase, effectively leading to abrupt transitions in the phase. These abrupt transitions can distort the phase synchronization results as they are not related to any neurophysiological effect. These transitions are called spurious phase variation. In this study, we present a model to remove generated artificial phase variations due to the effect of low envelope. The proposed method is based on a simplified form of a Kalman smoother, that is able to model the IP behavior in narrow-bandpassed oscillatory signals. In this work we first explain the details of the proposed Kalman smoother for modeling the dynamics of the phase variations in narrow-bandpassed signals and then evaluate it on a set of synthetic signals. Finally, we apply the model on ongoing-EEG signals to assess the removal of spurious phase variations.

We apply the method of shortcuts to adiabaticity to nonequilibrium systems. For unitary dynamics, the system Hamiltonian is separated into two parts. One of them defines the adiabatic states for the state to follow and the nonadiabatic transitions are prevented by the other part. This property is implemented to the nonequilibrium entropy production and we find that the entropy is separated into two parts. The separation represents the Pythagorean theorem for the Kullback–Leibler divergence and an information-geometric interpretation is obtained. We also study a lower bound of the entropy, which is applied to derive a trade-off relation between time, entropy and state distance.

We measured the concentrations of photoprotective compounds, carotenoids and mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), in surface-dwelling copepods in relation to their vertical distribution patterns along a zonal transect in the subtropical North Pacific to better understand their adaptation to strong ultraviolet (UV) radiation. All the dominant copepod groups analysed had detectable levels of both photoprotective compounds, while the concentrations differed among taxonomic groups. Farranula spp. had high carotenoid and MAA content (mean carotenoids: 0.0656; mean MAAs: 0.0230 µg mg dry wt-1) and the accumulation of MAAs correlated positively with in-situ UV penetration, explaining their constant occurrence in the surface layer throughout the transect. Oncaea spp. and Acrocalanus spp. had higher levels of carotenoids than MAAs and showed variable vertical distribution patterns regardless of UV penetration, suggesting that carotenoids are used only temporally to mitigate the effect of UV radiation. In contrast, Clausocalanus spp. and Calocalanus spp. had the lowest concentrations of both photoprotective compounds (mean carotenoids: 0.0148 and 0.0209; mean MAAs: 0.0015 and 0.0029 µg mg dry wt-1). The mean weighted depth of Clausocalanus spp. showed a significant negative relationship with UV penetration, suggesting that they mitigated the harmful effects of UV radiation through behavioural responses. Calocalanus spp. may have adapted to subtropical surface waters with relatively low photoprotective compound concentrations. Our study demonstrated that surface-dwelling subtropical copepods exhibit taxon-specific patterns in photoprotective compound concentrations that are adaptations to intense UV radiation, which is crucial for understanding the high species diversity of copepod communities in subtropical open waters.
