Abstract

The article discusses the role of speech/language pathologists (SLP) in helping the communicatively-impaired persons who have experienced a stroke. Aphasia, a language disorder is usually a result of a left hemisphere lesion in the brain which affects normal linguistic functioning. It is considered a language problem because it affects the ability to recognize and manipulate the symbols upon which language is based. Aphasic language impairment can range from profound to mild, but is consistently devastating in its effects. Aphasia impacts upon all areas of language, including expression, understanding, reading, writing and even gesture. The SLP who works with the stroke survivor with aphasia must know not only the type and severity of the language deficit, but the person's preferred communication style, communication partners and communication environment. She must understand what is important to this person. Another diagnosis commonly experienced after a stroke is dysarthria. This speech disorder affects the strength and accuracy of the speech musculature, so that the utterance sounds distorted and slurred, perhaps too loud or too soft in varying degrees. The stroke survivor may have an additional difficulty with dysphagia or swallowing impairment. SLP attempt to help the person with dysphagia return to the family table. Initial meals, however, may consist of pureed food, if the individual is unable to swallow normal liquids.
