The purpose of this study is to find out onlinelearning readiness level of medical students at a university in thenortheastern part of Turkey. As a part of a program development process with afocus on online Medical English, the researcher aimed to determine medicalstudents' online learning readiness level. To this end, Turkish version ofOnline Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS) was employed [original version by Hung,Chou, Chen and Own (2010) and Turkish version by İlhan and Çetin (2013)]. Atotal of 189 students completed the scale. The overall results suggest that oncethe internet and computer self-efficacy of the participants are improved, theyappear to be ready for the adoption of online learning.

Facebook is a social networking website which hasbecome the most popular among others, with over 1 billion active users. Alongwith economic globalization and the rapid growth in international contacts,this growing communicative technology has become an inevitable part in allspheres of our daily life. It is not only a tool that allows us to transferinformation at an astonishing speed and provide instant communication but alsoan agent potentially to change the flow of lives. In spite of a number ofstudies on people’s attitude towards social networks and online applications,there is little interest in gender use in this matter. There are evencontradictory reports favoring males and females in the use of informationtechnology and social media. This paper seeks to answer whether there is anysignificant difference between male and female university EFL students in theuse of Facebook.

Temel dil becerilerinden biri olan okuma becerisi, eleştirel düşünmenin gelişmesi ve aynı zamanda değişen ve gelişen dünyamızda farklı görüş açılarının benimsenmesi açısından önemli bir anahtar olarak düşünülmektedir. Öğrencilerin ufuklarını açmalarına ve yeni bakış açıları kazanmalarına katkıda bulunan öğretmenlerin, öğrencileri için, çeşitli teknolojilerle kuşatılmış bir ortamda dahi olsalar da, halen bilginin kaynağı olarak kabul edildikleri kaçınılmaz bir gerçektir. Dolayısıyla, gelecekte öğretmen olarak birçok öğrenciye kaynaklık etmekle yükümlü olacak öğretmen adaylarının okuma yapıp yapmadıkları, ne konularda, ne kadar ve ne sıklıkta çevrimiçi okuma yaptıkları, çevrimiçi okuma alışkanlıkları ve ilgili bakış açılarını ortaya koymak önemlidir. Bu bağlamda, bu betimsel çalışmada, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının çevrimiçi ve basılı kaynakları okuma için ayırdıkları zaman, çevrimiçi hangi kaynakları ve ne sıklıkta okudukları, yaptıkları çevrimiçi okumalarla ilgili olarak düşünceleri ve gelecekteki profesyonel öğretmenlik hayatlarında bu okumalardan faydalanıp faydalanmama konusundaki görüşlerine yer verilmiştir. Söz konusu çalışmaya Türkiye’nin iki farklı üniversitesinden toplam 164 İngilizce öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda, çevrimiçi okumaların İngilizce öğretmenleri için kişisel ve mesleki bilgi kaynaklarını yapılandırmak açısından katkı sunacağı sonucuna ulaşılabilir., One of the basic language skills, reading is considered to be a key to improve critical thinking skills and to grasp different perspectives by experiencing changing nature of world. It is an inevitable fact that teachers, who are responsible for contributing to widen students’ horizons and aid them to gain new insights, are still regarded as sources of knowledge even in such an environment surrounded by high technology facilities. Therefore, it is crucial to see whether, and/or how often, prospective English teachers are interested in online reading and what kind of perceptions, or feelings, they have towards reading online and making use of such online readings in their future profession. In this respect, the current study aims to find out prospective English teachers’ online reading habits and perceptions. The data was collected via convenience sampling which is a type of non-probability sampling. Accordingly, the study was conducted at two different universities in northern Turkey and a total of 164 prospective teachers of English (37 male, 127 female) took the survey. The study suggests that the literacy focus has been turning from paper to online. Online reading is considered as a valuable source of knowledge, a tool for reaching educational goals, an integral part of English language learning and a crucial constituent of language teaching profession. It seems to contribute a lot to prospective English teachers who are developing their professional, procedural and personal knowledge base so as to be effective teachers of future.

Dueto the acceptance of English in twentieth century as international language ofscience and medicine, a considerable body of medical research and literaturehas been produced in English. This dominance of English in medical accountspaves the way for emergence of a new ESP branch (English for Specific Purposes)as EMP (English for Medical Purposes). The basic insight into this trend is tooffer course design, content and materials by being responsive to targetlanguage learners’ own agenda. Therefore, it is necessary to find out firstwhat is specifically appropriate, available and applicable for the targetsituation and target language learners in terms of their needs. In discoveringtheir needs, needs analysis is regarded as an integral part of decision makingprocesses in EMP. Without conducting a needs analysis process, using a medicalEnglish course book might not be enough for a medical student studying in anEFL (English as a Foreign Language) context like Turkey since most of themedical English course books in use are mostly addressing the needs of studentsin an ESL (English as a Second Language) context. Accordingly, as a part of aneeds analysis process, this study aims to investigate academic Englishlanguage needs of first year medical students who are attending advancedEnglish course at the Faculty of Medicine at Karadeniz Technical University.The data was collected via a structured questionnaire with 47 items. It coversfive different parts focusing on medical students' purposes of learningEnglish, significance of learning English, their preference of learningenvironment, language learning needs of major language skills (reading,writing, speaking, listening), their preference of assessment type. Thequestionnaire was administered to 169 students at the Faculty of Medicine atKaradeniz Technical University. Descriptive statistics was employed in order toanalyze the data.

Bu çalışma, bir öğretim aracı olarak rubric (dereceli puanlama cetveli) kullanmanın, İngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen öğrencilerin yazı performansları üzerindeki etkisini incelemektedir. Çalışmanın ana amacı öğrencileri, İngilizce yazarken çokça kendisini hissettiren sadece doğru gramer nosyonuna dayanan yazma algısından kurtarmaktır. Karma yöntem yaklaşımı kullanılarak, uygulama grubuna (s 16) iyi yazı yazmanın kurallarını içeren bir rubrik verildi. İki farklı deneme yazısı yazarken yazım süreçleri izlendi ve kendilerine rehberlik edildi. Kontrol grubundaki öğrenciler (s22) de aynı tip deneme yazıları yazdılar fakat onlara her hangi bir rubrik verilmedi. Veriler, öğrencilerle yapılan görüşmeler ve aynı rubriği kullanan üç bağımsız notlandırıcı tarafından değerlendirilen öğrencilerin yazılı metinlerinden elde edildi. Elde edilen sonuçlar, yazım sürecinde rubrik kullanan öğrencilerin kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerden daha üstün bir performans sergilediklerini ortaya koydu. Öğrencilerle yapılan görüşmelerin analizi, daha önce biraz zor gibi gözükmüş olsada, rubriklerin derslere entegrasyonunun, öğrencilere iyi yazının özelliklerinin neler olduğunu anlamada ve kendi yazılarında daha başarılı olmaları için uygun stratejiler kullanmada yardımcı olduğunu ortaya koydu., This study investigates the effect of using rubrics as an instructional tool on students’ writing performance in English as a foreign language. The major goal was to liberate the students from the narrow perception of writing based solely on the notion of correct grammar which is strongly felt in EFL writing. Using a mixed methods approach, the treatment group (n 16) was given a rubric which provided them with a clear set of criteria for good writing. They were guided in using the rubric while writing two different essays. The students in the control group (n 22) wrote the same essay types but they were not introduced to the rubric. The data were collected through student interviews and their essays, which were evaluated by three independent raters using the same rubric. The results revealed that students who received the rubric outperformed the students in the control group. The analysis of the student interviews proved that integration of the rubrics into the course, though initially somewhat challenging, helped the students appreciate the qualities of good writing and then utilize appropriate strategies to achieve them in their own writing.

Yazma derslerinde ürün odaklı yaklaşımların yerini süreç odaklı yaklaşımların alması ve bu tür yaklaşımların yaygınlaşmasıyla, hem öğrenciler hem de eğitmenler tarafından değer verilen yazılı öğretmen dönütü, eğitim araştırmalarının yanı sıra, öğrenme bağlamlarında da giderek daha fazla dikkat çekmeye başlamıştır. Öğretmenler, öğrenci yazılarına geri bildirim vermek için kayda değer bir zaman harcamaktadır. Bununla birlikte, çeşitli türlerdeki yazılı öğretmen dönütlerinin etkinliği, halen araştırılan ve çelişkili sonuçlar veren bir araştırma alanıdır. Öğrencilerin yazma becerisini kazanmalarına yardımcı olmak için, öğretmen dönütlerinin en iyi uygulamaları araştırılmaktadır. Çalışma, form odaklı ve içerik odaklı yazılı dönüt türlerinin yabancı dil öğrencilerinin genel yazma performansları, yazma tutumları ve yazma anksiyeteleri üzerindeki etkilerini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma ayrıca öğrencilerin yukarıda belirtilen geri bildirim prosedürlerine ilişkin algılarını da incelemektedir. Bu çalışmada yarı deneysel bir tasarım kullanılmıştır. Yabancı Diller Bölümünde iki grup oluşturuldu: içerik odaklı dönüt alan deneysel bir grup ve form odaklı dönüt alan bir kontrol grubu. Araştırmada hem nitel hem de nicel veri toplama yöntemleri kullanılmış; veriler yazma sınavı, yazmaya yönelik tutum anketi, ikinci dilde yazma kaygısı envanteri ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerle toplanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları, her iki grubun da yeni yazılarda anlamlı olarak geliştiğini fakat öğrencilerin yazma tutumları ve kaygı düzeylerinde anlamlı bir farklılık olmadığını ortaya koymuştur. Nitel analiz, öğrencilerin hala yazma becerisini dilbilgisinin hizmetinde olan bir olgu olarak algıladıklarını, dilbilgilerini geliştirmeyi hedeflediklerini ve yazılarındaki mesaja odaklanan dönüt prosedürüne mesafeli bir tutum sergilediklerini göstermiştir. As process-oriented approaches have become common practice and replaced product-oriented approaches in writing classes, written teacher feedback which is valued by both learners and instructors has attracted more attention in teaching and learning contexts as well as in educational research. Writing instructors seem to spend a lot of time providing feedback. However, the effectiveness of various kinds of written teacher feedback is a research area which is still investigated and the results yield conflicting results. In a quest to help students with acquiring writing skill, best practices of teacher feedback are researched. The study aims to investigate the effects of form-focused and content-focused feedback on EFL students' overall writing performance, their writing attitudes and the writing anxiety that they experienced in writing classes. The study also examines students' perceptions towards the aforementioned feedback procedures. A quasi-experimental design was employed for this study. Two groups at the School of Foreign Languages were formed: an experimental group which was provided with content-focused feedback and a control group which was provided with form-focused feedback. A combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods was used in this investigation and data were collected through writing tests, a writing attitude questionnaire, second language writing anxiety inventory and semi-structured interviews. The results of the study revealed that both groups improved significantly in new pieces of writing, while writing attitudes and anxiety levels of learners did not differ significantly. The qualitative analysis showed that students still perceive writing at the service of grammar, aim to improve their grammar accuracy and show some persistence to the feedback procedure which focused on communication of information in their writings. The study has some implications for EFL teachers and decision-makers. 114

Bu çalışmanın amacı, bir yabancı dil öğrenme ortamındaki öğretmenlerin ve öğrencilerin gözünden Google Classroom'un mevcut kullanımını araştırmaktı. Daha spesifik olarak, çalışma Main Course dersi için ek bir araç olarak çevrimiçi bir platformun etkinliğini ortaya koymaya çalışmıştır. Buna ek olarak, Google Classroom kullanmanın olası sakıncalarını ortaya çıkarmak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya İngilizce hazırlık programından 75 öğrenci ve 2 yabancı dil eğitmeni katılmıştır. Karma metot kullanılmıştır. Nicel veri toplamak için öğrencilere anket uygulandı ve nitel veri toplamak için öğrencilere ve öğretmenlere yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat ve açık uçlu sorular soruldu. Nicel veriler SPSS (v.22.0) ile ve nitel veriler içerik analizi ile analiz edildi. Ortaya çıkan verilerin genel analizi Google Classroom uygulaması kullanmanın Main Course dersine ek bir araç olarak birçok önemli katkısı olduğunu göstermiştir. Sadece öğretmenler değil aynı zamanda öğrenciler de karma öğrenme için çoğunlukla olumlu bir görüşe sahipti. More specifically, the study tried to find out the effectiveness of this online platform as a supplementary tool for Main Course class. Both teachers' and students' perceptions of using Google Classroom were explored. Additionally, the potential drawbacks of using Google Classroom were aimed to reveal. Throughout the study, 75 students in preparatory English programme and 2 EFL instructors participated. Mix method was employed. A questionnaire for students was carried out in order to obtain quantitative data and semi-structured interviews and open-ended questions were employed for the students and the teachers to collect qualitative data. Quantitative data was analysed through SPSS (v.22.0) and qualitative data was conducted via content analysis. The overall analysis of the elicited data presented several significant contributions of using Google Classroom as a supplementary tool in Main Course. Not only the teachers but also the students mostly held the view positively for blended learning. Okuma kişisel gelişim ve uygar bir toplumun ayrılmaz bir parçasıdır. Okuma hem bilgimizi arttırma hem de zihinsel ve akademik yeteneklerimizi geliştirme açısından çok önemlidir. Bu nedenle, iyi okuma alışkanlıkları oluşturmak bir eğitim sisteminin temel önceliği olmalıdır. Okuma özellikle öğretmen eğitimi açısından önemlidir çünkü gelecek nesilleri yetiştirecek olan öğretmenlerdir. İyi bir okuma alışkanlığına sahip olmak İngilizce öğretmenleri için daha da önemlidir çünkü daha önce bahsedilen faydalarının yanı sıra, okuma, yabancı dil öğreniminin temelini de oluşturur. Türkiye'de İngilizce öğretmenlerinin atanmasına kaynaklık eden iki temel bölüm vardır: İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı ve İngilizce Öğretmenliği. Fakat okuma alışkanlıkları hakkında yapılan pek çok araştırmaya rağmen, ülkemizde bu iki grubun okuma alışkanlıklarını karşılaştırmalı olarak araştıran, yazarın bilgisi dâhilinde herhangi bir çalışma yoktur. Bu açıdan, bu çalışma, bu alandaki boşluğu doldurmaya ve üniversite sınavında İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı veya İngilizce Öğretmenliği bölümleri 1. tercihleri olan öğrencilerin okuma alışkanlıklarını ve tutumlarını karşılaştırmalı olarak araştırmaya çalışmaktadır. Bu çalışmada karma araştırma modeli kullanılmıştır: çalışmanın nitel kısmında yaşam öyküsü tekniği, nicel kısmında ise bir anket veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın örneklemi Atatürk Üniversitesi, Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi ve Trabzon Üniversitesinin İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı ve İngilizce Öğretmenliği bölümlerinin hazırlık sınıflarından, nitel kısımda 298, nicel kısımda 294 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Çalışma her iki grup açısından çok benzer sonuçlar ortaya çıkarmıştır. Her iki grup da okumaya karşı yüksek oranda olumlu tutumlara sahip olmasına rağmen, yarıdan daha azının ayda ortalama bir kitap okuduğu görülmüştür ve iki grup arasında okudukları kitap sayısı veya okumaya ayırdıkları süre açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır. Bu iki grubun okudukları yazın türleri ve edebi türler de benzerlik göstermektedir ve romanın açık ara en fazla okunan tür olduğu görülmüştür. En yaygın okuma nedenleri, çalışmanın nicel kısmının sonuçlarına göre okumadan alınan haz, ufkunu genişletme ve farklı bakış açıları kazanma, nitel kısmına göre ise yeni şeyler öğrenme, okumadan alınan haz ve kişisel gelişimdir. Okumayı engelleyen faktörlere bakılınca, internet ve cep telefonları, üniversite sınavı ve derslerin yoğunluğu ön plana çıkmaktadır. Çalışmada istatistiki açıdan anlamlı olan sadece 3 madde vardır ve bunlar İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı grubunun okumaktan daha çok zevk aldığını, edebiyata daha fazla ilgi duyduğunu ve okumanın bölüm seçimlerinde daha etkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Reading is an indispensable part of personal development and a civilized society. It is of vital importance not only for increasing our world knowledge but also for developing our cognitive and academic skills. Consequently, developing good reading habits should be a main priority for any educational system and it is particularly important for teacher education as they are the ones who will educate future generations. Having good reading habits is probably more important for English language teachers because in addition to the benefits of reading aforementioned, it is also the basis of foreign language learning. There are two main sources for the recruitment of English teachers in Turkey, namely English Language and Literature departments (DELL) and English Language Teaching (ELT) departments; however, to the best of the author's knowledge, despite the vast body of literature on reading habits, there is no study in Turkey investigating the reading habits of these two groups comparatively. Accordingly, this study is an effort to fill the gap in this field and it aims to investigate the reading habits and attitudes of students who preferred either DELL or ELT departments as their first choices in the university entrance exam comparatively. The study used a mixed method research design: life history method was used in the qualitative section of the study and a questionnaire was used in the quantitative section as the data-gathering instruments. The sample in the qualitative and the quantitative sections of the study consisted of 298 and 294 participants respectively, from the prep classes of DELL and ELT departments of Trabzon University, Karadeniz Technical University and Atatürk University. The findings of the study yielded very similar results for both groups. Although both groups' attitudes towards reading were predominantly positive, less than half of them read one book a month on average and there was no statistically significant difference in terms of the amount of reading or the time allocated for reading by the two groups. The types of text or literary genres read were also similar and novel was found to be by far the most commonly read genre. The findings of the quantitative section indicated that the pleasure of reading, broadening one's horizon and gaining different perspectives were the major reasons for reading whereas the findings in the qualitative section suggested that learning new things, the pleasure of reading and personal development were the major reasons. As for the factors hindering reading, the internet and cellphones, the university entrance exam and the intensity of the studies came to the fore. There were only three statistically significant items in the study: the DELL group enjoyed reading more, they were more interested in literature and reading was more instrumental in their departmental preferences. 97

Çevirimiçi bir işbirliği platform olan eTwinning Avrupa Komisyonu tarafından 2005 yılında oluşturulmuş bir girişimdir. 2009 yılında bu girişime dahil olan Türkiye nispeten daha geç başlamış olmasına rağmen gerek kayıtlı okul, öğretmen ve proje sayısı ile gerekse kalite ödülleri ile portalı en verimli kullanan ülkelerin başında gelmektedir. Ancak alanyazında bu konuda bilimsel çalışma eksikliği görülmektedir. Bu sebeple bu çalışma eTwinning girişiminin yabancı dil eğitimindeki rolünü Türkiye bağlamında araştırmayı hedeflemektedir. Ayrıca örnek bir eTwinning projesini katılımcıların gözünden detaylı bir şekilde sunmak ve bu projenin katılımcıların çok boyutlu becerilerine katkısını inclemek de bu çalışmanın amaçları arasındadır. Çalışma katılımcıların bakış açılarını detaylı bir şekilde sunmayı hedeflediği için çalışmanın yöntemi niteliksel durum analizi olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın katılımcıları Türkiye'deki bir liseden bir İngilizce öğretmeni ile 11 öğrencisini ve Azerbaycan'da bir liseden bir İngilizce öğretmeni ile 12 öğrencisini kapsamaktadır. Veriler katılımcı gözlem, yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat ve Twinspace proje portalındaki belgelerden elde edilmiştir. Ayrıca triangülasyon ve standart veri sağlaması açısından yapılandırılmış mülakat tekniğinden de faydalanılmıştır. Gözlem, yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat ve Twinspace dökümanları içerik analizi yöntemi ile; yapılandırılmış mülakat varileri ise SPSS (23.sürüm) ile analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma bulguları söz konusu projenin katılımcıların İngilizce dil becerilerini geliştirme, Bilişim Teknolojileri kullanma becerilerilerini arttırma, kültürlerarası iletişim becerilerini ilerletme, değerler eğitimi ve iyi arkadaşlıklar kurma gibi konularda gelişme gösterdiklerini ortaya koymuştur. Turkey has been the most effective user of eTwinning platform with the number of schools, teachers and projects as well as prizes despite the fact that it was included into the platform in 2009. However, there appears a lack of scientific research covering the role of eTwinning on EFL in the literature. That is why this study aims to find out the role of eTwinning in EFL Turkish context. The study also seeks to portray an eTwinning project in detail from the participants' perspectives and its potential to improve multidimensional skills of the participants. It was conducted in a qualitative nature- a case study, since the purpose is to convey the perceptions of the participants and to present a detailed process of the project. The participants included 11 high school students and their teacher from Turkey and 12 high school students and their teacher from Azerbaijan. The data were collected through participant observation, interviews, project documents on Twinspace and a structured interview ensuring standard data and triangulation. The qualitative data obtained from the observation, interviews and the project documents were analyzed through content analysis and the quantitative data from the structured interview were analyzed through SPSS (version 23). The study revealed that the participants find the project promising in terms of English language improvement, ICT use, boosting ICC and affective issues such as values education and establishing good relationships. Bu çalışma, Yabancı Dil Alanını seçmiş 11. ve 12. sınıf öğrencilerinin yabancı dil ile ilgili kariyer tercihlerini etkileyen etkenlerin belirlenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Aynı zamanda, söz konusu öğrencilerin alan seçimlerinden önce yararlandıkları bilgi kaynakları tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır. Bu çalışmada nitel ve nicel çalışmalardan eş zamanlı olarak faydalanan karma yöntemin Eşzamanlı Üçgenleme Desen'i kullanılmıştır. Nicel veriler çalışma için geliştirilen bir anketin bu alanda eğitim alan 238 öğrenciye uygulanmasıyla, nitel veriler ise 11 gönüllü öğrenciyle yapılan görüşmeler sonucunda elde edilmiştir. Çalışmanın örneklemi Uygun Örneklem yöntemiyle belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen nicel veriler bir istatistik programı kullanılarak nitel veriler ise içerik analizi yöntemi ile incelenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, dil alanındaki öğrencilerin çoğunlukla içsel olarak güdülendiğini ve kendilerini bu alanda yeterli gördüklerini göstermiştir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin yabancı dil veya diller öğrenerek kendilerini geliştirmeyi hedefledikleri ve kendilerine iş olanağı sağlayacağını ve ileriki hayatlarında çeşitli alanlarda faydalı olacağını düşündükleri için İngilizceye değer verdikleri görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte öğrencilerin mevcut veya önceki İngilizce öğretmenlerinin ve ailelerinin öğrencilerin kararlarında önemli bir etkisinin olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin çoğunluğunun sinema, dizi, şarkı, sosyal medya ve çevrimiçi oyunlar gibi popüler kültürün öğelerinden etkilendiği ve yabancı dillere bu sayede ilgi duymaya başladıkları da bu çalışmanın bulguları arasındadır. Bazı öğrencilerin ise istemeyerek veya mecbur kaldıkları için bu alanı seçtikleri anlaşılmıştır. Son olarak, öğrencilerin Yabancı Dil Alanı hakkında bilgi almak için yararlandıkları kaynaklar araştırılmış ve bu kaynakların İngilizce öğretmenleri, çeşitli forumlar ve bazı sosyal medya platformları olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu kaynakların tarafsız ve resmi bilgiler sunmada yetersiz kaldıkları tespit edilmiştir. This study aims to determine the factors affecting the career preferences of the 11th and 12th grade students studying the Field of Foreign Language. Besides, it is tried to unearth the information sources that students utilized before the field selection process. In this study, concurrent triangulation mixed method enabling both qualitative and quantitative data was utilized. Quantitative data was obtained through a questionnaire developed specifically for this study and it was applied to 238 students studying the Field of Foreign Language. Qualitative data was obtained by conducting interviews with 11 volunteer students. The quantitative data analysis was performed via a statistical package while content analysis was performed for the qualitative analysis. The findings demonstrated that the students are mostly intrinsically motivated and they have self-efficacy beliefs in English. Moreover, the students aim to improve themselves by learning foreign languages and they value English since they think it will provide them with job opportunities and they will utilize it in various fields in the future. Furthermore, the current and previous English teachers and families of the students seem to have an impact on the decisions of the students. It was also figured out that most students are influenced by such elements of the popular culture as movies, TV series, social media and online games, and that they started to be interested in English thanks to these elements. On the other hand, it was determined that some students prefer this field unwillingly or under obligation. Lastly, the sources that students utilized to get information about the Field of Foreign Languages were found to be their English teachers, various blogs and some of the social media platforms which are insufficient to yield objective and official information. 89

Teknoloji hayatımızın vazgeçilmez bir parçasıdır ve akıllı telefonlar, internet, sosyal medya, bilgisayar ya da mobil oyunlarla dijital yerli olarak da adlandırılan gençlerin ilgi ve merakını büyük oranda cezbetmektedir. Okul sonrası hatta okul saatlerini oyun oynayarak geçiren öğrenci sayısı bir hayli fazladır. Oyunların insanları bu denli bağlaması oyunlara ait belirli özelliklerin öğrencilerin motivasyon ve katılımını artırmak ve böylece etkili bir öğrenme ortamı yaratmak için eğitim alanında da kullanılmaktadır ve bu sürece oyunlaştırma denmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, oyunlaştırmanın öğrencilerin İngilizce öğrenme başarıları üzerine olan etkilerini belirlemek ve öğrencilerin oyunlaştırma ve oyun öğelerine (puanlar, ödüller, rütbe, avatarlar, liderlik tablosu…) yönelik tutumlarını bulmaktır. Bu amaçla, ClassDojo uygulamasında bir oyunlaştırma tasarımı geliştirildi. Çalışmaya Ankara'da bir Anadolu Lisesinden 104 tane 9. sınıf öğrencisi katılmıştır. Öncelikle anket uygulaması yoluyla veri toplanmıştır. Daha sonra 11 katılımcıyla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme gerçekleştirildi. Araştırma sonuçları, oyunlaştırmanın öğrencilerin katılım ve motivasyonunu artırmada etkili olduğunu göstermiştir. Öğrencilerin dil becerilerini geliştirmelerine katkıda bulunmuştur. The number of students who spend their after school or even in school hours with playing games is pretty high. The fact that games engage people led to the use of certain game qualities in educational settings with the aim of increasing learner motivation and engagement, thus create an effective learning environment and this process is named as gamification. The aim of this study is to identify the effects of gamification on the enhancement of students' English learning achievement and find out the attitudes of the learners toward gamification and game elements (points, rewards, ranks, avatars, leaderboards…) With this aim, a gamification design was developed with the ClassDojo app. The study involved 104 9th grade participants from an Anatolian High School in Ankara and data were collected firstly through questionnaires. Afterwards, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 11 participants. The results yield that gamification was effective in increasing the participation and motivation of the participants. It contributed to the development of language skills. In addition, the students developed a positive attitude toward gamification and they enjoyed the game elements in general. Yazı eğitiminde süreçsel yaklaşımın yaygınlaşmasıyla birlikte yazılara verilen dönütler daha önemli hâle geldiği için bugün eğitimciler bazen tatminkâr düzeyde getirileri olmasa da dönüt uygulamalarına kayda değer bir zaman ayırmaktadır. Öğretmen dönütü üzerine yapılan araştırmalar da artan bu ilgi paralelinde olmakta ve verilen dönütün verimliliğine duyulan ilgi de artmaktadır. Ancak yaygın olan dönüt uygulamalarının hepsinin öğrencilerin ikinci dildeki yazma yeterliğine yeterince katkıda bulunmaması dönüt alan ve dönüt veren taraflar için kazançlı olmadığını göstermektedir. Dolayısıyla, öğretmenlerin dönüt verme uygulamalarındaki eksiklikleri gidermek için mevcut dönüt uygulamalarını geliştirecek yöntem arayışları içine girmeleri kaçınılmazdır. Bu çalışmada sürece dayalı yaklaşım ve süreç sonrası yaklaşımlardaki dönüt uygulamalarının öğrenci yazılarındaki iyileşmeye, yazma anksiyetesine, paragraf yazma özyeterliğine ve genel olarak yazmaya yönelik tutumlara etkisi karşılaştırılacaktır. Bu araştırma için Türkiye'nin kuzeydoğusundaki bir devlet üniversitesinin hazırlık programında okuyan 97 öğrenci iki gruba ayrılmıştır. Deney grubundaki öğrencilere yakınsal gelişim alanında (ZPD) dönüt verilirken kontrol grubu öğrenciler yakınsal gelişim alanından bağımsız dönüt almışlardır. Anket, yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat, süreç günlükleri, geriye dönük protokol ve portfolyö ön yazılarıyla veri toplanılan bu çalışmada karma yöntem kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, öğrencilere yakınsal gelişim alanında dönüt verildiğinde başarı puanlarının ve yazma öz yeterlik düzeylerinin arttığını ve yabancı dilde yazma kaygısının azaldığını göstermiştir. Nitel çalışmalardan elde edilen veriler dönüt uygulamalarındaki aracılık rolünün etkinliğine dair kapsamlı bilgiler sunmaktadır. Especially with the development of process approach to writing instruction, the significance of feedback has gained more momentum, and teachers today spend a considerable amount of time on feedback practices even though such efforts do not always end up in satisfactory returns. In line with the growing attention, research into teacher feedback has surged considerably and heightened attention fell on the effectiveness of the feedback provided. However, not all the prevalent feedback practices have been of the desired help in facilitating learners' second language (L2) writing proficiency, resulting in a no-win situation on the part of the learner and feedback provider. Therefore, to help improve teacher feedback, viable alternatives to promote the current feedback practices will be instrumental to develop a better understanding of the conundrum. To this end, a comparison of feedback practices in process and post-process approaches is presented with a focus on the impact of teacher feedback practices on learners' revisions, writing anxiety, self-efficacy and attitudes towards writing. To achieve the comparison in question, ninety-seven English major students studying at a preparatory program at a state university in north-eastern Turkey were divided into two groups. The students in the experimental group received feedback within their zone of proximal development (ZPD), while the students in the control group, the non-ZPD students, received random help from the teacher. A mixed-methods approach was used to gather data. Questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, process-logs, retrospective protocols, and cover letters were the instruments to obtain data. The findings suggest that if feedback is delivered within learners' ZPD, it could result in higher achievement scores as well as higher self-efficacy levels and lower L2 writing anxiety scores. The findings gleaned from the quantitative data provide in-depth insights into the effectiveness of mediation in feedback practices. Overall, arguments for the integration of the sociocultural views seem to be validated. 344

Teknolojinin gelişmesiyle birlikte farklı konu alanlarındaki eğitim uzmanları öğrenci motive edecek ve daha etkili eğitim sağlayacak farklı teknikler kullanmaya başladılar. Her öğrencinin ön bilgisi ve öğrenme teknik ve stratejileri farklıdır ve bu dolayısıyla öğrencinin başarısını etkiler. Geleneksel dil öğretme metodlarında, sınıf içi zamanın çoğu konuyu anlatmaya ayrılmıştır ve uygulama, pratik yapma kısmı öğrencilerin kendi sorumluluğuna bırakılmıştır. Çalışmanın konusu olan Ters-Yüz sınıf yaklaşımı öğrenme sürecini tersine çevirir ve öğretmenin verdiği videolar ya da ödevler aracılığı ile öğrencilerin kendi öğrenme hızına göre öğrenmelerine olanak sağlar. Ters-Yüz sınıf yaklaşımında sınıf içi zaman daha çok uygulama, tartışma ve soru-cevap için ayrılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Ters-Yüz sınıf yaklaşımının Türkiye'de bir Yükseköğretim kurumunda uygulanışını incelemektir. Çalışma yarı-deneysel bir dizayn kullanarak Ters-Yüz sınıf ve geleneksel sınıfı öğrencilerin performansları açısından karşılaştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Aynı zamanda, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler, algı anketi aracılığı ile öğrencilerin ve öğretmenin Ters-Yüz sınıfa olan yaklaşımları ve algılarını incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Uygulanan ön-test ve son-test sonuçları incelendiğinde, öğrencilerin performansı konusunda deney grubu ve kontrol grubu arasında anlamlı bir fark çıkmadığı gözlemlenmiştir. Fakat, algı anketi ve görüşmelerin analizinden çıkarılan sonuçlar öğrencilerin Ters-Yüz sınıf yaklaşımına karşı olumlu tutumlar geliştirdiğini göstermiştir. Buna ek olarak, öğretmen güncesinin analizinden çıkarılan sonuçlara göre öğretmenin de yeni öğrenme/öğretme yöntemine karşı olumlu bir tutum geliştirdiği gözlemlenmiştir. With the advancements in technology, educational specialists in various subject areas employ different teaching techniques to motivate the students. Each student's background knowledge, his/her techniques and strategies for learning are different; which in turn affect students' performances. In traditional methods of language teaching, most of the class time is allocated for covering the subject and the students are responsible for their own practice. Flipped classroom, which reverses the learning process, allows students follow their own pace of learning via videos proposed by the teacher and the class time is allocated mostly for practice, discussion and question-answer. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Flipped classroom is experienced in a tertiary level EFL classroom in Turkey. It focuses on students' performance in a Flipped classroom comparing it with a Traditional classroom by using a quasi-experimental design. It also uses interviews, teaching journal and an attitude questionnaire to analyze students' and the teacher's perceptions towards the new teaching approach. Concluding from the results of pre-post tests, there is not a statistically significant difference between the scores of control and experimental groups. However, the results of attitude questionnaire, interviews showed that the students have a positive attitude towards Flipped Classroom. Additionally, the data from teaching journal resulted in positive attitude of the teacher towards the new teaching/learning approach, too. 134

Sınıf içinde yabancı dil becerilerinin öğretiminde sıklıkla karşılaşılan ikilemlerden biri bu becerilerin bütünleşik şekilde veya ayrı derslerde öğretilmesidir. Mevcut çalışma, konuya İngilizce okutmanlarının gözünden yaklaşmış, Türkiye'de bir devlet üniversitesinde çalışmakta olan İngilizce okutmanlarının algı, inanç ve deneyimlerini ortaya çıkarmayı hedeflemiştir. Veriler, anket, açık uçlu sorular, mülakat ve toplantı yollarıyla edinilmiştir. Bulgular, okutmanların öğretim uygulamalarında dil becerilerini birleştirmeye meyilli olduklarını ve gelecekteki derslerinde de dil becerilerini bütünleşik bir şekilde öğretmeyi tercih ettiklerini göstermektedir. The present study investigated the issue from the viewpoint of EFL instructors and aimed to identify the perceptions, beliefs and experiences of instructors of English working at a state university in Turkey. Data were obtained through questionnaires, open-ended questions, interviews and a meeting. The findings reveal that the instructors were in favour of integrating language skills in their teaching practices and they preferred teaching language skills in an integrated way in their future teaching, too. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türk Erasmus öğrencilerinin İngilizce'nin ortak dil olarak kullanıldığı topluluklarda İngilizce'nin iletişim aracı olarak kullanımı ve kültürler arası farkındalıkları açısından görüşlerini araştırmaktır. Bunun yanı sıra, çalışma katılımcıların görüşleri üzerinde cinsiyetin etkisi ve hoşgörüsüzlük konusunu dikkate ve ele alması açısından farklı bir bakış açısı da sunmaktadır. Örneklem, Kardeniz Teknik Üniversitesi ve Gümüşhane Üniversitesi'nden 107 Erasmus öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Bu, nicel ve nitel araştırma geleneklerini birleştiren bir karma yöntem çalışmasıdır. Çalışma, verilen toplanmasında birebir mülakatların anket çalışmasını takip ettiği açıklayıcı (explanatory) araştırma desenini benimsemektedir. Mülakatlar 11 gönüllü öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilirken anket çalışması 107 giden Erasmus öğrencisi ile yapılmıştır. Bulgular, farklı kültürleri ziyaret etme ve dil becerilerini geliştirmek gibi çeşitli sebeplerin Türk Erasmus öğrencilerinin programa katılımlarını teşvik etmede önemli rol oynadığını göstermektedir. Çalışma ayrıca öğrencilerin Erasmus deneyimi öncesi, süresi, ve sonrasında karşılaştıkları çeşitli zorluklar ve problemleri ortaya koymaktadır. Yurtdışı deneyimleri sonucunda katılımcılar kelime bilgilerinin yanı sıra İngilizce dil bilgilerinin ve becerilerinin geliştiğini belirtmektedirler. Besides, the study presents a distinctive perspective as the effect of gender on participants' perceptions and the issue of intolerance are taken into account and discussed. The sample in the study consists of 107 Erasmus students from Karadeniz Technical University and Gümüşhane University. This is a mixed-methods study which combines qualitative and quantitative research tradition. It adopts an explanatory research design in which a questionnaire was followed by interviews for data collection. The questionnaire was conducted with 107 outgoing Erasmus students whereas the semi-structured interviews were carried out with 11 volunteer students. The findings reveal that various reasons such as visiting different cultures and improving language skills play an important role in promoting Turkish Erasmus students' participation in the program. The study also identifies various challenges and problems students faced before, during, and after their Erasmus experience. As a result of their study abroad experience, the participants acknowledge improving their linguistic knowledge and skills in English as well as vocabulary knowledge. Concerning the lingua franca status of English, English is considered as a world language used a contact language. `Özel amaçlı İngilizce ve çevrimiçi eğitim odaklı bir çevrimiçi Tıbbi İngilizce dersinin tasarlanması, geliştirilmesi ve yürütülmesi: EMPonline 2016` başlıklı bu çalışma, güncel eğitim teknolojilerini ve Özel Amaçlı İngilizce (ÖAİ) öğretimi yaklaşımlarını bir arada sunmayı hedeflemektedir. ÖAİ yaklaşımını odak noktası olarak ele alan bu çalışma, kapsamlı bir ihtiyaç analizi sürecinin ardından çevrimiçi ortamda sunulmak üzere ders izlencesi, içerikler ve ilgili materyallerin geliştirilmesiyle birlikte 11 haftalık Tıbbi İngilizce ders tasarımını ve yürütülmesini hedeflemektedir. Ayrıca, çalışmanın diğer amacı ise bu süreç içerisinde katılımcıların yaşadıkları deneyimlerine, görüşlerine ve değerlendirmelerine dayanarak çevrimiçi ortamda yürütülen tıbbi İngilizce dersinin verimliliğini ortaya koymaktır. İki yıl boyunca yürütülen bu boylamsal çalışma, Yabancı Diller Yüksek Okulu, Tıp Fakültesi ve Uzaktan Eğitimin işbirliğiyle gerçekleşmiştir. Çalışmanın örneklemini, ilgili birimlerin yöneticileri, İngilizce okutmanları, tıp doktorları ve tıp fakültesi öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmanın her bir aşamasında, nitel ve nicel veriler çeşitli kaynaklar aracılığıyla ilgili paydaşlardan toplanmıştır.Yarı-deneysel araştırma desenine sahip bu çalışma aslında ÖAİ yaklaşımlı ders tasarımı ve çevrimiçi öğretim ortamını içermesi açısından iki çeşit yenilik sunmaktadır. Gerçeklerin daha kapsamlı şekilde ortaya koyulmasının yanı sıra konunun makro ve mikro düzeylerde ele alınabilmesi için bu çalışmada nitel ve nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları gösteriyor ki, önerilen tıbbi içerikli İngilizce ders tasarımına dair yenilik paydaşlar tarafından nispeten kabul görürken; çevrimiçi öğrenme ortamı hususunda, daha fazla zamana, işbirlikçi bilinçli çabaya ve daha da önemlisi yenilikçi anlayışa ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. This study with a title of `Designing, developing and delivering an online medical English course with a focus on ESP and Online Learning: EMPonline 2016` is an attempt to converge recent educational technologies with ESP-based approach to language teaching. After a comprehensive needs analysis process due to its special focus on ESP, it was aimed at designing an online medical English course, developing 11-week syllabus, course content and the regarding course materials, delivering the suggested online medical English course, EMPonline and lastly, revealing the perceived effectiveness of implementing such an EMP-based English class in an online environment according to the views of various stakeholders based on their reflections, evaluations and experiences throughout the delivery process of the suggested EMPonline class. Lasting two years, this longitudinal study was conducted with the collaboration between three departments at a state university including the School of Foreign Languages, the Faculty of Medicine and Center of Distance Education. The sample comprised of administrators, English lecturers, medical doctors and students studying at the Faculty of Medicine. The data was collected through a variety of sources in each phase of the study.This study with quasi-experimental research design introduced two types of innovation concerning ESP-based course design and online educational environment. It conjoined qualitative and quantitative research traditions in order to get a more inclusive picture of the reality and to approach the issue on both macro and micro-levels based on the data analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings indicated that while the innovation concerning the suggested EMP-based course design was relatively more rewarded by the stakeholders; more time, mutual conscious effort and more importantly innovative minds are apparently needed on the part of the online educational environment. 374

Gün geçtikçe yeni kullanımlar ve kullanıcılar edinen İngilizcenin değişen toplum dilbilimsel zemini, şu anki monolitik İngilizce eğitiminin küreselleşen dünyanın ihtiyaçlarını karşılamadaki yeterliliği konusunda pek çok soruya sebebiyet vermektedir. İngiliz veya Amerikan odaklı dil eğitimini sorgulayan pek çok girişim arasından İngilizcenin Uluslararası Dil Olarak Öğretimi (EIL) paradigması bu yeniliğin dil sınıflarına indirgenmesi münasebetiyle özellikle değerlidir. Var olan bu monolitik eğitimin sorgulanması çağrısına bir cevap mahiyetinde olan bu araştırma, çalışma kapsamında hazırlanan 10 haftalık bir EIL odaklı özgün genel İngilizce dersi sınıf uygulamasının, katılımcıların İngilizcenin değişen toplum dilbilimsel gerçekleri konusundaki farkındalıkları, dilsel ve kültürel çeşitlilik konusundaki tutumları ve dil becerileri üzerindeki olası etkilerini ölçmeyi ve bütün öğeleri ile bu sınıf uygulamasını değerlendirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu maksatla, 53 hazırlık programı öğrencisi ile bir karma yöntemli çalışma gerçekleştirilmiştir. Muhtemel uygulama çıktılarına yönelik veriler ön-son test ve odak grup mülakatları ile toplanırken, uygulama geriye dönük mülakatlar, haftalık katılımcı değerlendirme raporları, akran sınıf içi gözlemleri, açık uçlu genel değerlendirme anketi ve öğretmen saha notları ile değerlendirilmiştir. Alandaki mukaddem çalışmalara paralel olarak, katılımcıların İngilizcenin değişen ve karmaşıklaşan toplum dilbilimsel zemini konusundaki bilgi ve farkındalıklarının istatistikî olarak anlamlı derecede arttığı, dilsel ve kültürel çeşitliliğe karşı olumlu tutum geliştirdikleri ve dinleme, etkileşim ve eleştirel düşünme becerilerinde iyileşme sağlandığı gözlenmiştir. Ancak kültürel çeşitlilik konusundaki müsamahaya rağmen, İngilizce mülkiyeti, aksan çeşitliliği, eğitim değişkesi konularında İngiliz-Amerikan yöneliminin devam ettiği saptanmıştır. Ayrıca, bu özgün sınıf uygulaması Facebook sosyal medya ağının eğitim ortamı olarak kullanılması dışında tüm konuları, etkinlikleri, ders materyalleri ve değerlendirme yöntemleri ile etkili bulunmuştur.Anahtar Kelimeler: EIL, çeşitlilik, kültür, farkındalık, İngilizce Dil Eğitimi, tutum The changing sociolinguistic landscape of English with new users and uses merits attention as it complicates the current ELT traditionally constructing language as a static and monolithic entity. This complication has encouraged the re-examination of current ELT practices around the world. Among several initiatives to challenge Anglo-centric view of English and consequently ELT, equally well-documented is the paradigm of English as an International Language. As a response to the calls in this camp to question the Anglo-centric ELT and transform it into practice, the present study aimed at both investigating the possible effects of an original 10-week EIL-oriented General English classroom practice on learners' understanding and awareness of the sociolinguistic realities and complexity of English, their attitudes towards cultural and linguistic diversity in English and their language-related proficiency, and evaluating the whole process. To this end, using a convenience sampling strategy, a mixed-method study was conducted with 53 preparatory programme students. While the data on the possible outcomes were gathered via a pre and post-implementation questionnaire and focus-group interviews, the course was evaluated with retrospective interviews, weekly student reports, peer classroom observation, a final open-ended questionnaire and bi-weekly teacher field notes. Lending support to several earlier studies, the outcomes of the practice were found to be heightened understanding and awareness of the sociolinguistic realities and complexity of English, higher positive attitude towards EIL orientation and improvement in listening skill, interaction confidence and expressing themselves, culture-related performance, critical thinking and the use of communication strategies. However, still in general there was an Anglophone orientation towards language ownership, language diversity and instructional varieties, yet the participants seemed more tolerant of the inclusion of cultural diversity into their classes. Yardımlı-Okuma, Yabancı Dil Olarak İngilizce Öğretimindeki okuma uygulamaları arasında özellikle son yıllarda çok fazla kabul görmemiştir. İlgili alanyazında da bu konu ile ilgili tatmin edici araştırma ve bulgular sınırlı kalmaktadır. Bu kapsamda mevcut çalışma, İngilizce'yi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen öğrencilerin yardımlı ve yardımsız okuma uygulamalarındaki anlama düzeylerini ve tutumlarını belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Aynı zamanda çalışma, katılımcıların yardımlı ve yardımsız-okuma puanlarında cinsiyete ve bilişsel stile dayalı farklılıklarını incelemeyi hedeflemektedir. Araştırmaya İngilizce'yi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen 112 (Alan bağımlı=55, Alan bağımsız=57) lisans öğrencisi katılmıştır. Katılımcılar, iki ay boyunca 11'i yardımlı ve 11'i yardımsız olmak üzere seviyelerine uygun olarak belirlenmiş toplam 22 İngilizce metin okumuşlardır. Katılımcılara, araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen Yardımlı Okuma Tutum Ölçeği de uygulanmıştır. Bununla birlikte katılımcılarla hem bireysel hem de odak grup görüşmeleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, 8. Sınıf İngilizce öğretimi esnasında kullanılan İngilizce kelimelerin Türkçe anlamları ile bir kaç defa yazdırılması tekniği ile bu kelimelerin hafızadaki kalıcılığı arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek ve Türkiye'nin değişik bölgelerindeki devlet okullarında çalışan İngilizce öğretmenlerinin bu kelime öğretim tekniği hakkındaki görüşlerini, araştırmacı tarafından oluşturulan bir öğretmen anketi ile toplayıp, sonuçları analiz etmektir. Çalışmaya katılan öğrenciler Ankara'da bir devlet okuluna devam eden ortaokul öğrencileridir. İki sınıftan toplam 80 öğrenci bu çalışmaya katılmıştır. Kelime öğrenimi ile uygulanan yöntem arasındaki ilişkiyi bulmak için, yarı deneysel araştırma deseni kullanılmıştır. İlk olarak, iki sınıfın İngilizce dersi başarı puanlarının arasında istatistiksel açıdan manidar bir fark olup olmadığını saptamak için en son dönem İngilizce dersi başarı notu ortalamaları hesaplanmıştır. Aradaki farkın istatistiksel açıdan manidar olmadığı görüldükten sonra, iki sınıf homojen kabul edilmiştir. Daha sonra, sınıflar deney ve kontrol grupları olarak adlandırılmıştır. Deney grubundan kelime ezberlemeleri için kelimeleri anlamları ile bir kaç defa yazmaları, kontrol grubundan ise kelimelerin anlamlarını bulmaları ve kitaptaki kelime alıştırmalarını yaparak, kelimelerin geçtiği okuma metinlerini okumaları istenmiştir. Üç ayrı uygulamanın sonucunda, her iki sınıfa da aynı kelime sınavı uygulanmış ve sonuçları karşılaştırılmıştır. Sonuçlar SPSS 16.0 programı ile analiz edilmiştir. A quasi experimental design was employed to find any relations, if any, between the treatment sessions and vocabulary retention. Students were divided into experimental and control groups according to their first term English grades. While experimental group was required to write target words multiple times with their meanings, control group was required to find the meanings themselves, do the vocabulary exercises in the book and read the reading passages which include target words in order to memorize them. After three different treatment sessions, a vocabulary quiz was applied to both classes as a post test. It was analyzed quantitatively. The data of the quiz was analyzed by independent t- test on SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 16.0. The findings have revealed that the common vocabulary teaching practice used is not very effective for long time vocabulary retention. Instead, students did not focus their attention wholly on the meanings, rather they focused on the writing session as they stated to the researcher in the feedback sessions after the treatment. İngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen öğrenciler akademik yazı yazarken kelime düzeyleri ve çeşitliliği açılarından bir dizi sorun yasamaktadırlar. İstenilen ölçülere uygun olarak akademik yazı yazabilmenin önünde engel oluşturan bu sorunların ilk nedeni eşdizimsel kelimeleri ve İngilizcenin deyimsel doğasını göz ardı etmelerinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bu bilgisayar destekli karşılaştırmalı öğrenen derleminin amacı öğrencilerin İngilizce`deki eş dizim yapılarının genel frekanslarını ve gelişimlerini ve yine bu arada yaygın yapılan eşdizim yapı hatalarını araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla, İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı 1. ve 2. öğrencileri tarafından yazılan akademik yazılar belirli tasarım ölçütlerine göre toplanmış ve çalışmanın derlemi oluşturmuşlardır. Çalışmanın amaçlarına dönük olarak, KTUCALE derlemi üzerinden yapılan kelime türü araştırması, eşdeğer olan kaynak bir derlemin kullanılmasını da gerekli hale getirmiştir. Sonuç olarak BAWE derlemi kaynak akademik derlem olarak çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada özel amaç örneklemesi yöntemi kullanılmış ve Oxford Çevrimiçi Yerleştirme sınavı ile öğrenciler arasındaki seviye farkları belirlenmiş ve toplam iki grup oluşturulmuştur. Ayrıca, sınav sonuçlarına göre çalışmaya katılacak öğrencilerin sayısı belirlenmiştir (s:120). Çalışmaya katkı sağlayan veriler hem niteliksel ve hem de niceliksel olarak elde edilmişlerdir. Öğrenen derleminin niceliksel analizini öğrencilerin anketlere, geriye dönük hatırlama protokolü, öğrenci günlüklerine verdikleri dönütlerden oluşan nitelik analizi takip etmiştir. Bu karşılaştırmalı öğrenen derlemi ortaya çıkarmıştır ki KTUCALE öğrenen derlemi eşdizimsel kelime çeşitliliği ve yoğunluğu acısından, referans derlem olan BAWE ye kıyasla çok daha az bir zenginlik göstermiştir. Çalışmanın bir diğer bulgusu KTUCALE derleminde yaygın eşdizimsel kelimeler olup, kullanım frekansı yüksek olan bazı kelime gruplarının normalden çok fazla ve normalden çok düşük seviyelerde olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bir diğer bulgu ise yanlış kullanılan eşgüdümsel kelimelerin çeşitliliğinin çok yüksek olması ama bunun öğrencilerin bu konuda duyarsız olmalarından çok, sınırlı eşdizimsel kelime dağarcığına sahip olmalarından kaynaklandığı düşünülmektedir.Anahtar kelimeler: Öğrenen derlemi, eşdizim yapılar, dil arası gelişim, üniversite öğrencileri, yazma Students of English as a Foreign Language are facing a variety of problems that make their academic writing fail to meet the required criteria in terms of lexical complexity and variation, which could be related to the ignorance of collocational nature of English language as well as the failure to consider the phraseological nature of the language. Thus, the purpose of this computerized contrastive learner corpus analysis is to analyze the overall frequency and development of support verb constructions as well as investigating the common support verb construction misuses. For this purpose, the academic essays written by university students of English in 1st and 2nd years were taken as the samples for the study. Lexical investigation of KTUCALE corpus, which was solely compiled to serve the objectives of this study, entailed the presence of another similar sized academic corpus and, as a result, British Academic Written English (BAWE) was selected as the reference academic learner corpus for the study. Purposive sampling methodology was used in the study and the analysis was done by comparing the language use of the learners who were categorized into two distinct levels with respect to their present language proficiency levels through Oxford Online Placement Test and the levels of the subjects (n:120) were determined based on the scores they got from the test. The data for the study were both qualitative and quantitative in nature. Quantitative analysis of the learner corpora findings was followed by a qualitative analysis of the learners' responses to the questionnaires, retrospective protocols and student diaries. The main findings of this contrastive learner corpus analysis revealed that KTUCALE learner corpus is much less complex in terms of support verb construction diversity and density than the reference corpus BAWE. Another finding was that the support verb construction samples from KTUCALE were shaped by excessive overuse and underuse of some of the most frequently used words. Yet another finding was a high level of diversity in terms of the incorrect use of support verb constructions as a result of the learners' limited word stock rather than from their ignorance of these multi-word combinations. Bu çalışma İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının İngilizce dersleri için değerlendirme tercihlerinin ve bu değerlendirme tekniklerini tercih etmelerine neden olan faktörlerin araştırılmasını amaçlamıştır. Bu amaçlar doğrultusunda hem nicel hem de nitel veri toplama araçları kullanılmıştır. Nicel veriler için Ölçme Teknikleri Farkındalık Anketi, Ölçme Teknikleri Kullanım Anketi ve Ölçme Teknikleri Tercihi Anketi kullanılırken, nitel veriler odak grup görüşmeleri yoluyla toplanmıştır. Katılımcı grubunu toplam 326 İngilizce öğretmen adayı oluşturmuş ve bu katılımcılardan 38 kişi odak grup görüşmeleri için rastgele seçilmiştir. Katılımcılar birinci ve son sınıf öğrencisidir. Anket verileri SPSS 16.0 programında analiz edilmiştir.Bulgular, öğretmen adaylarının yabancı dil dersinde cinsiyet, kişilik özellikleri ve sınıf seviyelerine göre farklı ölçme teknikleriyle değerlendirilmek istediklerini ortaya koymuştur. Bulgular bölümler arasında ölçme teknikleri farkındalık, kullanım ve tercih açısından anlamlı farklılık olduğunu göstermiştir. Bulgular ayrıca bu tercihlerine etki eden faktörlerin ulusal sınavlar, kalabalık sınıflar ve öğretmen gibi dıştan; sınav kaygısı, bireysel farklılıklar ve önceki öğrenmeler gibi içten kaynaklanan sebepler olduğunu göstermiştir. Both qualitative and quantitative assessment tools were used. Assessment Techniques Awareness, Assessment Techniques Usage and Assessment Techniques Preferences Questionnaires were integrated in quantitative part of the study and qualitative data were carried out with four focus group interviews. The participants consisted of 326 pre-service EFL teachers and 38 pre-service teachers were chosen randomly from the population to participate in the focus groups. The data of the questionnaires were analyzed through SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 16.0. The findings have revealed that the pre-service teachers prefer to be assessed with different language assessment techniques for various reasons according to their gender, perceived identity and years of school. The results of the study show that there is a significant different between the departments in terms of language assessment awareness, usage and preferences. The findings also indicate that the underlying factors for these preferences are attributed to external reasons such as high-stakes tests, teachers and crowded classes and also internal reasons such as test-anxiety, individual differences and prior knowledge. In addition, most of the interviewees were in favor of being assessed with mixed language assessment techniques such as translation, portfolios, and multiple-choice test and presentation in order to show their actual language performance. Bu çalışmanın amacı Facebook örneği üzerinden sosyal medya sitelerinin, İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı bölümü öğrencilerinin kültürlerarası iletişim ve farkındalığa etkisini incelemektir. Çalışma başlıca üç kısımdan oluşmaktadır, 14 haftalık Facebook grup sayfası etkinlikleri eri, mülakatlar ve Kültürlerarası farkındalık testinden elde edilen veriler ve bu verilerin nitel ve nicel olarak değerlendirilip analiz edilmesi. Çalışmada iki grup katılımcı vardır, birinci grup resmi öğretim süreciyle eşgüdümlü olarak Facebook Grup sayfası etkinliklerin yapıldığı deney grubu, ve ikinci grup olarak ta fazladan hiçbir uygulamaya tabi tutulmaksızın gelenksel öğretim sistemiyle eğitim alan Kontrol grubu. Çalışmada anket ve mülakatlar ile hem nitel hem nicel araştırma metodları kullanılmıştır. Nitel veriler nitel veri analiz yöntemleriyle, nicel veriler ise SPSS yazılımı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlar Facebook'un üniversite öğrencileri üzerinde kültürlerarası farkındalık ve iletişimi güçlendiren önemli düzeyde bir etkisinin olduğunu göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte, çalışmadaki katılımcıların Facebook'un eğitim aracı olarak kullanılmasıyla ilgili meraklı ve istekli oldukları gözlemlenmiştir. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of social networking websites on intercultural communication and awareness among English majoring students, Facebook as the case. The study covered three main steps; the data collection process through 14 week Facebook Group page activity and interviews and Intercultural Awareness Test, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data gathered. There were two groups of participants, one for experimental group with whom the Facebook Group page activities are held in accordance with the formal instruction process, and control group who took traditional instruction without any extra aid or application. In the study, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used through questionnaires and focus group interviews. The qualitative data of focus group interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to content analysis techniques and quantitative data of Intercultural Awareness test were analyzed using SPSS software. The results of the data analysis showed that Facebook has a significant effect on developing intercultural awareness and communication among university students. The study also showed that the participants are both curious and fancy about using Facebook as an educational tool. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye'deki orta okul İngilizce öğretmenlerinin motivasyon ve demotivasyon kaynaklarını araştırmak ve öğretmenlik süreçlerinin, bu motive edici ve motivasyon düşürücü etmenlerden ne boyutta etkilendiğini bulmaktır. Bu araştırma, bir karma yöntem çalışması olup, Türkiye'nin farklı şehirlerindeki ortaokullarda çalışan 149 İngilizce öğretmeniyle yapılmıştır. Çalışma, verilerin toplanmasında birebir mülakatların anket çalışmasını takip ettiği açıklayıcı (explanatory) araştırma desenini benimsemiştir. Anket 149 öğretmenin hepsine uygulanmış olup, 10 tanesiyle de mülakatlar yapılmıştır. Niceliksel verinin analizi için SPSS v.16.0, niteliksel verinin analizi için, içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular, öğrenciyle ilgili unsurların, bu öğretmen grubu tarafından büyük ölçüde motive edici olarak kabul edildiğini göstermiştir. Veliler ve yönetim ile ilgili bazı unsurlar, okulla ilgili bazı faktörler, maaş, hizmet içi eğitimler, çalışma saatleri, iş güvenliği, iş özerkliği, öğretmenlerin toplumdaki statüleri, meslekteki ilerleme olanakları ve çalışma arkadaşları arasındaki ilişkiler de Türkiye'deki çoğu İngilizce öğretmeni tarafından motive edici olarak görülmektedir. Diğer yandan, müfredat, ders kitaplarıyla ilgili bazı unsurlar, genel eğitim politikalarındaki değişiklikler ve teftiş süreci çoğu İngilizce öğretmeni tarafından motivasyon düşürücü olarak görülmektedir. İngilizce öğretmenlerinin öğretmenlik süreci bu motive edici ve motivasyon düşürücü etmenlerden etkilenmektedir. Fakat, bu etkinin boyutu öğretmenler arasında farklılık göstermektedir. This is a mixed-methods study conducted with 149 EFL teachers working at the secondary schools in different cities of Turkey. It adopts the explanatory research design in which a questionnaire survey was followed by interviews for data collection. The questionnaire was administered to all 149 participants while the interviews were conducted with 10 participants. SPSS v.16.0 for quantitative data analysis and content analysis for qualitative data analysis were used. The findings reveal that student-related issues are remarkably considered motivating by this group of teachers. Some issues related to the parents and the administration, some school-related issues, salary, in-service training, working hours, job security, work autonomy, status of teachers in society, holidays, advancement opportunities and the relationship among the colleagues are also considered motivating by most EFL teachers in Turkey. On the contrary, the syllabus, some course books related issues, the changes related to national guidelines and supervisory process are considered demotivating by most EFL teachers. The teaching process of EFL teachers are influenced by these motivational and demotivational aspects of teaching. However, the extent of this influence shows difference among teachers. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türk lise öğrencilerinin açık kaynak kodlu öğretim yönetim sistemlerinden biri olan MOODLE sisteminin İngilizce harmanlanmış öğretiminde kullanımına yönelik tutumlarını araştırmaktır. Cinsiyet açısından tutumlardaki farklılıklar da araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca, İngilizce derslerinde, harmanlanmış öğretim için MOODLE sistemi kullanımının öğrenci başarısı üzerindeki etkisi de araştırılmıştır. Çalışma, bir deney ve bir kontrol grubu ile uygulanmıştır. Çalışmaya, kolaylıkla bulunabilen örnekleme tekniğine uygun olarak yaşları 16 ile 18 arasında değişen toplam 44 öğrenci katılmıştır. Kontrol grubu, 10'u kız, 12'si erkek olmak üzere 22 öğrenciden oluşmuştur. Deney grubu, 12'si kız, 10'u erkek olmak üzere 22 öğrenciden oluşmuştur. 15 haftalık uygulama sonrasında, deney grubuna anket ve yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat uygulanmıştır. Bunlara ek olarak, deney grubunun ikinci dönem sınav notları ile kontrol grubunun ikinci dönem sınav notları ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Yarı-yapılandırılmış mülakatlardan elde edilen nitel veriler içerik analizi yapılarak incelenmiştir. Anket ve sınavlardan elde edilen nicel veriler SPSS (16.0) yazılımı kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, eşleştirilmiş örnekler t-testi ve Mann-Whitney U-testi de uygulanmıştır. Anket ve mülakatlardan edinilen veriler, lise öğrencilerinin İngilizce harmanlanmış öğretiminde MOODLE sisteminin kullanımına yönelik olumlu tutum sergilediklerini göstermiştir. Cinsiyet açısından öğrencilerin tutumlarında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamıştır. Deney ve kontrol gruplarının 1. ve 2. dönem İngilizce sınav notları incelendiğinde, deney grubunun 1. ve 2. sınav notları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık tespit edilmiştir (t=-3.085 sig=0.005). Possible differences in attitudes in terms of gender are also investigated. In addition, the study intends to find out whether the use of MOODLE in English lessons as a tool for blended instruction makes a significant difference to the achievement of students. The study was conducted with one control and one experimental group. A total of 44 students participated in the study ranging in age from 16 to 18 selected on the basis of convenience sampling technique. The control group consisted of 22 students, 10 of whom were female and 12 male. The experimental group consisted of 22 students with 12 females and 10 males. After a fifteen-week treatment, a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were administered to the experimental group. In addition, three exam results of an experimental group were compared with the exam results of a control group in the second semester. The qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews were processed using content analysis. The quantitative data collected through questionnaires and exam results were analyzed using SPSS (v.16.0). Paired samples T-test and Mann-Whitney U-test were also applied to see the difference between the two groups. The overall analysis of the data from both questionnaires and interviews indicates that Turkish high school students who participated in this study have positive attitudes towards the use of MOODLE in ELT blended instruction. It is also found that there is no significant difference between the scale scores of the students in their attitudes towards the use of MOODLE according to gender difference. With regard to 1st term and 2nd term English exam scores of the experimental and the control group, there is a statistically significant differences between 1st and 2nd English exam scores of the students in the experimental group (t=-3.085 sig=0.005), indicating that the use of MOODLE in blended EFL lessons increased learners' achievement.Key words: MOODLE, blended-learning, course management system 136

Bu çalışma, İngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak konuşan Türk yüksek lisans öğrencilerinin ve İngilizceyi anadil olarak konuşan yüksek lisans öğrencilerinin tezlerini tür analizi acısından ele almaktadır ve iki gruba ait tezlerin tartışma bölümlerini retoriksel ve yazınsal duruş açısından incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ayrıca her iki gruptan üçer öğrenciyle de açık uçlu görüşme yapılmıştır. Analiz her gruptan alınan Uygulamalı Dilbilimi alanındaki 10 tez üzerinde Dudley-Evans'ın işlev taksonomisi ve Hyland'in yazınsal duruş motifleri taksonomisi baz alınarak yapılmıştır. Her iki grup arasında istatistiksel açıdan farkları ortaya koyabilmek için AntConc 3.2.4w bütünce analiz programı ve Log-Likelihood testi kullanılmıştır. Kelime sıklığı 37298 olan bu bütünce, kodlamanın güvenirliği için üç araştırmacı tarafından kodlanmıştır. Sonuçlar iki grup arasında etkili bir yazınsal duruş sergilemede istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı farklar olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. İngilizceyi anadil olarak konuşan öğrencilerin genelleme yaparken daha ihtiyatlı bir tutum sergiledikleri ve aynı zamanda genellemelerini destekledikleri görülmüştür. Öte yandan, Türk yüksek lisans öğrencilerinin daha iddialı savlar ortaya koydukları, daha az ihtiyat belirteçleri kullandıkları ve genellikle sonuçtan direkt genel yargılara ulaştıkları sonucu ortaya çıkmıştır. Görüşmelerin sonucunda İngilizceyi anadil olarak konuşan öğrencilerin yazınsal duruşlarının ve söylemsel argümanlarının gelişmesinde, aldıkları eğitimin, yürütmekte oldukları çalışmaların ve bireysel çabalarının etkisinin olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Türk öğrencilerin akademik anlamda diğer gurup kadar aktif olmamalarının ve akademik üslup anlamında yeterli düzeyde eğitim almamış olmalarının, onların üslup ve argümanlarının şekilenmesinde etkili olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. The present study is a genre analysis carried out on Turkish and native speaking English (NS) master?s students? theses. It aims to investigate the probable differences between these two groups in terms of rhetorical organization and stance taking in the discussion sections of master?s theses. The analysis is based on 10 master theses in Applied Linguistics from each group. Additionally, a semi-structured interview was conducted with six students with the aim of commenting on the results more clearly. The rhetorical patterns (moves) and stance markers (hedges, boosters, attitude markers, self-mentions) used in the realization of the moves were examined. The results indicate that NS students appeared more cautious in making claims. NS students support their claims with evidence and tone them with hedges. However, the reverse was apparent in the case of Turkish students, who tend to make bold claims with boosters which are not down-toned by hedging and they seem to favour quick generalizations and jumps from specific results to general claims. Additionally, both groups project differences in terms of move organization and frequency. Interviews revealed that the background, active involvement in academic field and individual efforts could have helped NS students to exhibit a distinguished stance and rhetorical organization in discussion parts of their theses. Not all Turkish students received required education in academic writing; yet, they tend to show reluctance towards actively engaging in the academic disciplines and compensating the gaps in their genre awareness. 163

Amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılan korpus tabanlı bu çalışmada, genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan 2000 kelimenin (West, 1953) bir yabancı dil (İngilizce) ders kitabında içerik (load), dağılım ve tekrar şekilleri araştırılmıştır. Analiz için, Türkiye' de birçok ilköğretim okulunun 8. sınıflarında zorunlu olarak okutulan, `Spot-On, Grade-8' adlı ders kitabı seçilip kitabın okuma metinleri; genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan ilk 1000 kelimenin, genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan ikinci 1000 kelimenin ve akademik kelimelerin yer aldığı üç kelime listesini içeren `Range' adlı özel bir bilgisayar programında incelenmiştir.Ders kitabının okuma metinleri, genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan 2000 kelimenin kitapta hangi ölçüde yer aldığını, dağıtıldığını ve tekrar edildiğini bulmak amacıyla incelenmiştir. Kitabın kelime içeriği bağlamında; kitabın okuma metinlerinde toplam 2200 farklı kelimenin (token), 747 kelime türünün (type) ve 512 kelime ailesinin (word family) yer aldığı belirlenmiştir. Kelime içeriği, genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan 2000 kelime ile kıyaslandığında, sonuçlar; birinci kelime listesinin ders kitabında baskın bir biçimde yer aldığını, genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan ikinci 1000 kelimenin ise oldukça belirsiz bir biçimde yer aldığını ortaya çıkardı ki bu ders kitabının kelime içeriğinin oldukça sınırlı olduğunu gösteriyordu, ve ders kitabında nadiren karşılaşılan kelimelerin (infrequent words) de az sayıda yer aldığı belirlendi. Sık karşılaşılan 2000 kelimenin dağılım biçimi bağlamında; ne genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan 2000 kelimenin yer aldığı iki kelime listesinin ne de en sık karşılaşılan kelimelerin kitapta tutarlı (balanced) bir dağılım göstermediği görülmüştür. Tekrar bağlamında ise; çalışmanın sonuçları, genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan kelimelerin tekrar (frequency) değerlerinin hem üniteler içerisinde hem de bir bütün olarak kitapta oldukça düşük olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır.Spot-On, Grade-8 adlı ders kitabında genel İngilizcede en sık karşılaşılan 2000 kelimenin (West, 1953) içerik, dağılım ve tekrar şekillerini araştırmayı amaçlayan bu çalışmanın sonuçları doğrultusunda, bu ders kitabında kelime seçimine, dağılımına ve tekrarına daha çok önem verilmesi gerektiği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bir yabancı dil ders kitabının kelime içeriğinin bugüne kadar araştırılmamış yönlerini inceleyen bu çalışmanın, bundan sonra ders kitaplarının kelime içeriğine yönelik gelişmelere katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir. In this corpus-based study employing purposive sampling method; loading, distribution, and repetition patterns of the 2000 high frequency words of General English (West, 1953) were searched for in an EFL course book. For the analysis, the course book; Spot-On, Grade-8, used compulsorily in most of Turkish state schools, was selected and the `reading spots? (reading sections) of the book were examined by applying Range, a special computer programme, covering three ready-made base word lists; Word List 1 involving the first most frequent 1000 words of General English, Word List 2 involving the second most frequent 1000 words of General English and Word List 3 involving the academic words.`Reading spots? of the course book were examined to discover to what extent the 2000 high frequency words of General English are covered, distributed and repeated within distinct units, and within the course book. As for the vocabulary load, it was observed that the `reading spots? of the book involve 2200 tokens, 747 types, and 512 word families. When the vocabulary load was compared with the 2000 high frequency words of General English, the results suggested that Word List 1 asserts its dominance on the vocabulary coverage of the book, however, the book involves quite an insignificant number of words from the second most frequent 1000 words of General English, which reveals the limited vocabulary coverage in the book, and the number of infrequent words is small in the book. Concerning the distribution patterns of the 2000 high frequency words, it was observed that neither the distribution of two word lists nor the distribution of high frequency words within the book was balanced. In terms of the repetition, the results of this study revealed that the frequency values of the high frequency words of General English were low both within the units and within the book.Based on the results, this study aiming to investigate loading, distribution, and repetition patterns of the 2000 high frequency words of General English (West, 1953) in the course book; Spot-On, Grade-8, concludes that a considerable attention should be paid to vocabulary selection, distribution, and repetition in the course book. By examining unexplored dimensions in vocabulary of an EFL course book, this study hopefully contributes to future improvements in vocabulary coverage of EFL course books. 187

Bu çalışma Milli Eğitim Bakanlığınca, İngiliz dili öğretimi için hazırlanmış Breeze 9 ve Breeze 10 adlı ders kitaplarını kültürel gösterim açısından incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Breeze ders kitabı serisi, Türkiye'deki Düz Lise öğrencileri için geliştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın örneklemini, amaçlı örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen Breeze ders kitabı serisi ve kolaylık örnekleme yöntemiyle belirlenen 9 İngilizce öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. Veri analizi yöntemi olarak içerik çözümlemesi kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışma, genel anlamda nicel bir çalışmadır fakat elde edilen verileri desteklemek amacıyla nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden açık uçlu sorular da kullanılmıştır. Veri analizi yaparken, Pfister ve Borzilleri'nin (1977) beş genel kültürel temaları kullanılmıştır. İngilizce öğretmenleri için beş sorudan oluşan yapılandırılmış mülakat hazırlanıp, elektronik posta yoluyla dağıtılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda, Breeze ders kitabı serisinin, kaynak kültür, hedef kültür ve uluslar arası kültür öğelerine yer verdiği görülmüştür. Bununla beraber, uluslar arası kültür öğelerinin diğer kültür öğelerine oranla daha fazla işlendiği ortaya çıkarılmıştır ki bu İngilizce'nin ortak iletişim dili olduğu gerçeğini destekler niteliktedir. Ayrıca İngilizce öğretmenlerinin yabancı dil öğretiminde kültürün önemini ve kültür ve dil arasındaki ilişkiyi vurgulayan cevapları da yapılan içerik çözümlemesinin sonuçlarını desteklemekte ve ilgili kaynak taramasıyla tutarlılık göstermektedir. This study aims to investigate cultural representations in two currently-used English language teaching course books, Breeze 9 and Breeze 10, which were developed by the Turkish Ministry of National Education. The Breeze course book series was prepared for the students of general high schools in Turkey. The samples in this study, Breeze 9 and Breeze 10, were selected via purposive sampling, and 9 English teachers were selected via convenience sampling. In order to analyze the course books in terms of cultural representations, content analysis was conducted. This study is a predominantly quantitative study, though it includes a subsequent qualitative component. In the data collection process, a modified form of the categories suggested by Pfister and Borzilleri (1977) is utilized, including five general cultural themes: family unit and the personal sphere; the social sphere; political systems and institutions; environmental sphere; and religion and the arts. As for the teachers of English, a structured interview including five questions was developed and administered via e-mail. This study concludes that both course books include cultural elements regarding home culture, target language culture, and international target cultures. It is revealed that representations of international target cultures outnumber those of home culture and target language culture, thus indicating the status of English as a lingua franca. The responses of English teachers also confirm the result of the content analysis by stating the importance of culture in foreign language teaching and the inseparability of language and culture as being consistent with the relevant literature. 224

Bu çalışma 2010?2011 eğitim-öğretim yılında Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi, İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü'nde 3. ve 4. sınıfta okuyan öğrencilerin öğrenen özerkliği, İngilizce ile olan uğraşları ve akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.Bir örnek olay niteliğinde olan bu çalışmada gerekli verileri toplamak için nicel ve nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin öğrenen özerkliği, dil ile olan uğraşları ve akademik başarıları ile ilgili verilere ulaşmak için anket çalışmasından ve yarı yapılandırılmış mülakatlardan yararlanılmıştır. Buna göre nicel veriler, 2010?2011 eğitim-öğretim yılında İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü'nde 3. ve 4. sınıfta okuyan 83 üniversite öğrencisinden toplanmıştır ve bu veriler 8 öğrenciyle yapılan mülakatlarla desteklenmiştir. Araştırmanın amacına bağlı olarak gerekli ölçütler göz önünde bulundurularak, her iki örneklem seçiminde de olasılı olmayan amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır.Nicel verilerin analizi SPSS 16.0 programı aracılığı ile betimsel analizler ve Pearson korelasyon katsayısı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Mülakatlardan elde edilen nitel veriler ise içerik analizi ile yorumlanmıştır.Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerin öğrenen özerkliği, İngilizce ile olan uğraşları ve akademik başarıları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ve pozitif bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Öğrencilerin öğrenen özerkliği ile akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişki ve öğrencilerin İngilizce ile olan uğraşları ile akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişki orta düzeyde çıkmıştır. Diğerlerine nazaran en güçlü ilişki öğrencilerin öğrenen özerkliği ve İngilizce ile olan uğraşları arasında bulunmuştur. Mülakatların sonuçlarında da benzer ilişkiler bulunmuştur. The current study, conducted at the Department of English Language and Literature, Karadeniz Technical University, is an attempt to investigate the relationships between learner autonomy, language engagement and academic achievement as measured by Grade Point Average (GPA).The sample in the study consists of 83 students including senior and junior students attending the Department of English Language and Literature at Karadeniz Technical University. 8 out of 83 students are selected to conduct interviews. The participants are selected through purposive sampling which is a part of non-probability sampling.This is a case study combining qualitative and quantitative research tradition. The data is collected via questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. In analyzing the data obtained via the semi-structured interviews, qualitative analysis is used and quantitative analysis is used in analyzing the data collected via the questionnaire. The SPSS 16.0 program is used in the analysis of the quantitative data. As for the qualitative analysis, content analysis is used to determine recurring themes.The study indicates that there are statistically significant relationships between learner autonomy, language engagement and academic achievement as measured by GPA. The nature of the correlations is positive. The strongest relationship occurs between language engagement and learner autonomy while the relationship between learner autonomy and academic achievement as measured by their GPAs and the relationship between language engagement and academic achievement are moderate. The findings obtained via the interviews are consistent with the findings obtained via the questionnaire. 154

Bu çalışmanın amacı, işbirlikli öğrenme aktivitelerinin öğrencilerin yabancı dil olarak İngilizce derslerindeki başarısına ve öğrencilerin işbirlikli öğrenmeye yönelik tutumlarına olan etkisini araştırmaktır. Cinsiyet açısından tutumlardaki ve başarıdaki olası farklılıklar da araştırılmıştır. Bunun yanında, işbirlikli öğrenmenin öğrencilerin özgüveni üzerindeki etkisi de araştırılmıştır. Çalışma, bir deney ve bir kontrol grubu ile uygulanmıştır. Çalışmaya toplam 51 öğrenci katılmıştır. Uygulama yapılmadan önce, her iki gruba da bir ön-test uygulanmıştır. Deney grubu, dört işbirlikli öğrenme aktivitesi kullanılarak öğretilmiştir. Kontrol grubu, geleneksel yöntemle öğretilmiştir. Dört haftalık sürecin sonunda, her iki gruba bir son-test uygulanmıştır. Dört haftalık uygulama sonrasında deney grubuna bir anket uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca amaçlı seçilen 6 öğrenci ile yarı-yapılandırılmış mülakatlar yapılmıştır. Her iki grubun ön-test ve son-test puanları t-testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Test sonuçlarına göre deney ve kontrol grubu arasında uygulama sonrasında anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur. Deney grubu son-testte kontrol grubundan çok daha başarılı olmuştur. Anketlerden edinilen veriler SPSS yazılımı kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Cinsiyet açısından öğrencilerin tutumlarında ve başarısında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamıştır. Mülakatlardan edinilen veriler içerik analizi yapılarak incelenmiştir. Mülakatlardan ve anketten edinilen veriler öğrencilerin işbirlikli öğrenmeye yönelik olumlu tutum sergilediklerini göstermiştir. Ayrıca öğrenciler işbirlikli öğrenme aktiviteleri ile özgüvenlerinin arttığını belirtmiştir.Anahtar sözcükler: İşbirlikli öğrenme, özsaygı, okuma The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of cooperative learning activities on students? achievement in EFL reading classes and students? attitudes towards cooperative learning. Possible differences in attitudes and scores in terms of gender are also investigated. Besides, the effect of cooperative learning on learners? self esteem is investigated. The study was conducted with one control and one experimental group. In total, 51 students participated in the study. Before the implementation of the treatment, a pre-test was given to both groups. The experimental group was instructed using four types of cooperative learning activities. The control group was taught using the traditional method. At the end of the four-week process, a post test was administered to both groups. A questionnaire was administered to the experimental group after the four-week treatment. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with six purposefully selected students. Pre-test and post-test scores of both groups were analyzed by t-tests. According to the results of these tests, a significant difference after the treatment was found between the control group and the experimental group. The experimental group performed significantly better than the control group at post-test. Questionnaire data was analyzed through the SPSS. Gender was found to have no significant influence on students? attitudes towards cooperative learning and achievement. The interviews were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Data collected in student interviews and the questionnaire reveal that students have positive attitudes towards cooperative learning. Bu çalışmanın amacı öğrencilerdeki kaygı düzeyini saptamak, öğretmen ve öğrencilerin konuşma derslerindeki dil kaygısına yönelik tutumlarını belirlemek ve Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Yabancı Diller Yüksek Okulundaki konuşma derslerinde yaşanan dil kaygısını azaltmak için alternatif bir yöntem aramaktır. Öncelikle, okulun dil kaygısı bakımından genel durumunun ne olduğunu saptamak için (Yabancı dil sınıfı kaygı ölçeğinden uyarlanmış)Yabancı Dil Konuşma Kaygısı Ölçeği, farklı öğrenim düzeylerinden (Başlangıç, orta seviye öncesi ve orta seviye) rastgele seçilen 565 kişiye uygulanmıştır. Daha sonra konuşma derslerindeki dil kaygısına yönelik tutumlarını öğrenmek üzere aynı okuldan 30 öğrenci ve 20 öğretim görevlisiyle yarı-yapılandırılmış mülakatlar yapılmıştır. Mülakata katılan öğrenciler rastgele seçilmiş, öğretim görevlileri ise amaçlı örneklem yöntemiyle belirlenmiştir. Bütün bu safhalardan sonra, daha önceden 123 saat yaratıcı drama ve liderlik çalıştayına katılan araştırmacı önderliğinde 6 haftalık bir yaratıcı drama programı düzenlenmiştir. Bu program çerçevesinde rastgele seçilen 22 katılımcıya bir tek gruplu öntest-sontest çalışması yapılarak, programın konuşma derslerindeki dil kaygısı üzerindeki etkisi ölçülmüştür. Anketlerden edinilen veriler SPSS yazılımı kullanılarak, mülakatlardan edinilen veriler ise içerik analizi yapılarak incelenmiştir. Bulgulara göre konuşma dersi performans notlarıyla kaygı düzeyleri karşılaştırıldığında anlamlı bir farklılık olmadığı görülmüştür. Anketlerden elde edilen diğer bir sonuç bayanların erkeklerden daha kaygılı olduğunu göstermiştir. Bayanların erkeklerden daha kaygılı olmasına rağmen, konuşma derslerindeki performans notlarının erkeklerden daha iyi olduğu ve bu farkın istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olduğu bulunmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra, yaratıcı drama programına katılan öğrencilerin dil kaygısı seviyelerinde kayda değer bir düşüş olduğu saptanmıştır. Çalışma, anketlerdeki bulgular ve öğretmen ve öğrencilerle düzenlenen mülakatlar ışığında kaygının sebepleri, etkileri ve dışavurumunu detaylı olarak inceler. The aim of the study is to identify the language anxiety level of students, explore students? and teachers? perceptions of language anxiety in speaking classes and seek an alternative way to reduce language anxiety in speaking classes at the School of Foreign Languages at Karadeniz Technical University. First of all, to have an overall picture of the school in terms of language anxiety, the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (an adapted version of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) was administered to 565 students who were randomly selected from different levels, namely beginner, pre-intermediate and intermediate. Next, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 30 students and 20 speaking teachers to get their perceptions of language anxiety in speaking courses. The students for the interviews were randomly selected and a purposive sampling procedure was employed in the selection of the teachers. After all these, a one-group pre-test/post-test study was carried out with 22 randomly selected students who attended a 6-week creative drama program run by the researcher who received creative drama and leadership training for 123 hours. The FLSAS was administered to the participants before and after the 6-week study, and the findings were compared to see the impact of the treatment. The findings from the questionnaires were analyzed through the SPSS and the interviews were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The results reveal that there is not a significant difference when speaking classroom performance grades and anxiety levels are correlated. Another finding from the questionnaires is that females were found to be more anxious than males according to the FLSAS. Although the females were found to be more anxious than the males, their speaking performance grades were found to be significantly better than the males. Moreover, a statistically significant decrease was found in the language anxiety levels of students who participated in the creative drama program. The study also elaborates on the possible sources, effects and manifestations of anxiety with reference to the findings from the questionnaires and interviews carried out with students and teachers. 262
