Abstract

How the bulk of the Universe's visible mass emerges and how it is manifest in the existence and properties of hadrons are profound questions that probe into the heart of strongly interacting matter. Paradoxically, the lightest pseudoscalar mesons appear to be the key to the further understanding of the emergent mass and structure mechanisms. These mesons, namely the pion and kaon, are the Nambu-Goldstone boson modes of QCD. Unravelling their partonic structure and the interplay between emergent and Higgs-boson mass mechanisms is a common goal of three interdependent approaches -- continuum QCD phenomenology, lattice-regularised QCD, and the global analysis of parton distributions -- linked to experimental measurements of hadron structure. Experimentally, the foreseen electron-ion collider will enable a revolution in our ability to study pion and kaon structure, accessed by scattering from the "meson cloud" of the proton through the Sullivan process. With the goal of enabling a suite of measurements that can address these questions, we examine key reactions to identify the critical detector system requirements needed to map tagged pion and kaon cross sections over a wide range of kinematics. The excellent prospects for extracting pion structure function and form factor data are shown, and similar prospects for kaon structure are discussed in the context of a worldwide programme. Successful completion of the programme outlined herein will deliver deep, far-reaching insights into the emergence of pions and kaons, their properties, and their role as QCD's Goldstone boson modes., Comment: 73 pages, 27 figures

7. First investigation of electromagnetic coupling of the d*(2380) hexaquark

Abstract

This thesis presents the first measurement of the d*(2380) (hexaquark) electromagnetic coupling, extracted from the deuteron photodisintegration (~γd → d* → ~np) reaction. The experiment was carried out at the Mainzer Microtron (MAMI) facility in the Institut für Kernphysik in Mainz, Germany. A racetrack microtron at the MAMI facility provided a 1557 MeV longitudinally polarised electron beam. This electron beam was directed onto a thin radiator to produce a bremsstrahlung photon beam. Diamond and amorphous (metallic) radiators were used to produce linearly and circularly polarised photons respectively. The produced bremsstrahlung photon beam was energy 'tagged' with a resolution of ~4 MeV over the photon-energy range of 150-1400 MeV using the Glasgow Photon Tagger. The tagged photons were incident on a 10 cm long liquid deuterium target. This target was surrounded by a new nucleon recoil polarimeter apparatus and placed within the Crystal Ball calorimeter at MAMI. An array of PbWO4 and BaF2 detectors (TAPS) was used to provide calorimetry at forward angles. The newly constructed large acceptance recoil polarimeter measures the polarisation of the nucleons in the final state. The combination of this new apparatus with the polarised photon beam facility gives access to a number of single and double polarisation observables. The photon beam asymmetry, Σ, and the double polarisation observable, Cx', were examined in measurements of the reaction d(→γ,→n→p) over a large range of energies with a close to full angular coverage. The observable Cx' is determined for the neutron produced in deuteron photodisintegration for the first time. The new data constrains mechanisms of deuteron photodisintegration and assesses the existence and contribution of the d*(2380) resonance.

Abstract

The final season of excavations at the archaeological park of Monte Rinaldo in 2023 focused on the southwestern area, revealing the façade of a Republican building and a pavement defining the square of the sanctuary. The earliest phases included levelling of the area during the reconstruction of the sanctuary in the second century BC, with significant finds such as black glaze pottery, metal items, and organic material. The structures of the Republican period were later reused and rebuilt using material from the previous construction, particularly architectural terracottas. Additionally, a fieldwalking survey around the sanctuary revealed rare fragments of pottery, suggesting an absence of a population in the immediate area. The research was conducted by a team from the University of Bologna in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio, the British School at Rome, and ARCADRIA, with support from the municipality of Monte Rinaldo. Abstract

The British School at Rome's 2023 fieldwork program focused on completing the Rome Transformed Project and expanding activities for the Falerii Novi Project. The Rome Transformed Project, funded by the European Research Council, explored the archaeology of the Eastern Caelian Hill in Rome, leading to new insights about the area between the second and eighth centuries AD. Excavations at Falerii Novi focused on the forum and tabernae to understand their changing functions over time. The BSR also conducted research at the rural Republican sanctuary of 'La Cuma' at Monte Rinaldo and initiated a new project at the vicus of Furfo in Barisciano. Abstract

The University of Bologna and the British School conducted archaeological excavations at the Latin sanctuary site of Monte Rinaldo in 2022. The main objective was to complete the excavation of buildings discovered in 2018 and partially excavated in 2019. The excavations revealed new sections of an early Imperial complex and further Republican structures. The newly discovered rooms were likely part of an adjoining building, possibly used for practical purposes. The excavation also uncovered evidence of a retaining wall and hydraulic infrastructure, suggesting the importance of water in the sanctuary. The structures belonged to the main monumental phase of the religious complex and formed part of the sacred space on its western side. The research at Monte Rinaldo was conducted in collaboration with the Soprintendenza ABAP, and the excavations were part of a long-term research agreement between the University of Bologna, the British School at Rome, and ARCADRIA. Abstract

Archäologischer Anzeiger, 1. Halbband 2022, The gymnasium of Agrigento is one of the most important, if not the most important gymnasium in Sicily and the western Mediterranean more generally, because of its size, design, and chronology. While parts of a race-track section and a pool were excavated between the 1950s and 2005 and were published in 2009 and 2011, crucial questions remain open: the extension, design, and most notably the existence and location of a palaestra; the construction date in the 2nd century B.C. or the Augustan period; and the urban context. To answer these questions, a project was launched in 2019 in cooperation between the Parco Archeologico e Paesaggistico Valle dei Templi di Agrigento and the Freie Universität Berlin, and a first season, together with the British School at Rome, was carried out in 2020. This paper presents the results of this first campaign, which included first, a geophysical survey of the area around the gymnasium and of a field to the north of the Hellenistic-Roman temple; and second, an architectural survey of unpublished features and work in the archives and storerooms of the Parco Archeologico.
