Abstract

Over the past few decades, neuroimaging has become a ubiquitous tool in basic research and clinical studies of the human brain. However, no reference standards currently exist to quantify individual differences in neuroimaging metrics over time, in contrast to growth charts for anthropometric traits such as height and weight1. Here we assemble an interactive open resource to benchmark brain morphology derived from any current or future sample of MRI data ( http://www.brainchart.io/ ). With the goal of basing these reference charts on the largest and most inclusive dataset available, acknowledging limitations due to known biases of MRI studies relative to the diversity of the global population, we aggregated 123,984 MRI scans, across more than 100 primary studies, from 101,457 human participants between 115 days post-conception to 100 years of age. MRI metrics were quantified by centile scores, relative to non-linear trajectories2 of brain structural changes, and rates of change, over the lifespan. Brain charts identified previously unreported neurodevelopmental milestones3, showed high stability of individuals across longitudinal assessments, and demonstrated robustness to technical and methodological differences between primary studies. Centile scores showed increased heritability compared with non-centiled MRI phenotypes, and provided a standardized measure of atypical brain structure that revealed patterns of neuroanatomical variation across neurological and psychiatric disorders. In summary, brain charts are an essential step towards robust quantification of individual variation benchmarked to normative trajectories in multiple, commonly used neuroimaging phenotypes.

Abstract

The Technical Design for the COMET Phase-I experiment is presented in this paper. COMET is an experiment at J-PARC, Japan, which will search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of an aluminium nucleus ($\mu-e$ conversion, $\mu^- N \to e^- N$); a lepton flavor violating process. The experimental sensitivity goal for this process in the Phase-I experiment is $3.1\times10^{-15}$, or 90 % upper limit of branching ratio of $7\times 10^{-15}$, which is a factor of 100 improvement over the existing limit. The expected number of background events is 0.032. To achieve the target sensitivity and background level, the 3.2 kW 8 GeV proton beam from J-PARC will be used. Two types of detectors, CyDet and StrECAL, will be used for detecting the \mue conversion events, and for measuring the beam-related background events in view of the Phase-II experiment, respectively. Abstract

A flux-splitting method is proposed for the hyperbolic-equation system (HES) of magnetized electron fluids in quasi-neutral plasmas. The numerical fluxes are split into four categories, which are computed by using an upwind method which incorporates a flux-vector splitting (FVS) and advection upstream splitting method (AUSM). The method is applied to a test calculation condition of uniformly distributed and angled magnetic lines of force. All of the pseudo-time advancement terms converge monotonically and the conservation laws are strictly satisfied in the steady state. The calculation results are compared with those computed by using the elliptic-parabolic-equation system (EPES) approach using a magnetic-field-aligned mesh (MFAM). Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons yield good agreements of results, indicating that the HES approach with the flux-splitting method attains a high computational accuracy., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

A new approach using a hyperbolic-equation system (HES) is proposed to solve for the electron fluids in quasi-neutral plasmas. The HES approach avoids treatments of cross-diffusion terms which cause numerical instabilities in conventional approaches using an elliptic equation (EE). A test calculation reveals that the HES approach can robustly solve problems of strong magnetic confinement by using an upwind method. The computation time of the HES approach is compared with that of the EE approach in terms of the size of the problem and the strength of magnetic confinement. The results indicate that the HES approach can be used to solve problems in a simple structured mesh without increasing computational time compared to the EE approach and that it features fast convergence in conditions of strong magnetic confinement., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

A quasi-one-dimensional analytic model is proposed for the internal fluid of rotating detonation combustors (RDCs). This model uses the shock-tube model that constrains the flow to have only a longitudinal component, while admitting the propagation of the detonation wave in the azimuthal direction. The proposed model is able to compute the thruster performance and two-dimensional distributions of gas properties. The calculation process of the model excludes iterative calculation or space discretization. The case calculations of the hydrogen-air RDC and the ethylene-oxygen RDC are conducted, and the results calculated by the analytic model are compared with those simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Good agreement has been observed between the results obtained with the proposed model and CFD, in terms of both of the qualitative and quantitative comparisons. 6. Numerical analysis of azimuthal rotating spokes in a crossed-field discharge plasma

Abstract

Low-frequency rotating spokes are obtained in a cross-field discharge plasma using two-dimensional numerical simulations. A particle-fluid hybrid model is used to model the plasma flow in a configuration similar to a Hall thruster. It has been reported that the drift-diffusion approximation for an electron fluid results in an ill-conditioned matrix when solving for the potential because of the differences in the electron mobilities across the magnetic field and in the direction of the E$\times$B drift. In this paper, we employ a hyperbolic approach that enables stable calculation, namely, better iterative convergence of the electron fluid model. Our simulation results show a coherent rotating structure propagating in the E$\times$B direction with a phase velocity of 2,500 m/s, which agrees with experimental data. The phase velocity obtained from the numerical simulations shows good agreement with that predicted by the dispersion relation of the gradient drift instability., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

10. Plasma structure and electron cross-field transport induced by azimuthal manipulation of the radial magnetic field in a Hall thruster E × B discharge.

Abstract

Plasma structure and electron cross field in the z – θ plane of a Hall thruster E × B plasma under an azimuthally inhomogeneous magnetic field are studied by both experimental and numerical approaches. The work is intended to identify a primary role of electron dynamics on the structure formation by manipulating only the strongly magnetized electrons. The plasma potential distribution shows an axial–azimuthal variation; a low magnetic field region results in spatial potential saturation further downstream. The plasma density structure shows a 1D-like azimuthal variation with less axial deformation. A dense region is observed near the location of ∇ B > --> 0 , where electrons are expected to undergo the ∇ B and curvature drift toward the anode where neutrals are introduced. The potential structure is in close correlation to the Hall parameter distribution, indicating that electron dynamics plays a primary role in plasma structure formation, and via multiple consecutive stepwise physical steps, it eventually affects the density structure formation. In the z – θ space, the cross-field transport by E × B and diamagnetic drifts dominantly determines the electron flow and increases the overall axial electron mobility due to the azimuthal inhomogeneity. It is shown that most of the current is carried by the largest structure, but as the macroscopic structure fades out downstream, small structures grow and share the current. By considering the conservation laws, we show that a relation between azimuthal distributions of physical properties is formed to conserve the axial flux by a balance of specific forces, a balance between the resistive force and the magnetic force in the near-anode region and a balance between the electric/pressure force and the magnetic force in the acceleration and plume region, which differs from the Boltzmann relation satisfied in the radial dimension. Based on this principle, with a simplified test case having a uniform plasma density distribution, we show an analytic relation between azimuthal distributions of the magnetic field and the plasma potential and confirm the relation by a 2D hybrid simulation. Abstract

Task-free functional connectivity in animal models provides an experimental framework to examine connectivity phenomena under controlled conditions and allows for comparisons with data modalities collected under invasive or terminal procedures. Currently, animal acquisitions are performed with varying protocols and analyses that hamper result comparison and integration. Here we introduce StandardRat, a consensus rat functional magnetic resonance imaging acquisition protocol tested across 20 centers. To develop this protocol with optimized acquisition and processing parameters, we initially aggregated 65 functional imaging datasets acquired from rats across 46 centers. We developed a reproducible pipeline for analyzing rat data acquired with diverse protocols and determined experimental and processing parameters associated with the robust detection of functional connectivity across centers. We show that the standardized protocol enhances biologically plausible functional connectivity patterns relative to previous acquisitions. The protocol and processing pipeline described here is openly shared with the neuroimaging community to promote interoperability and cooperation toward tackling the most important challenges in neuroscience. The authors pooled resources to identify best practices and develop a new standardized protocol for estimating functional connectivity in rats with magnetic resonance imaging.

Abstract

Discharge current components, such as electron, ion beam, and lost-to-wall currents, are obtained as functions of azimuthal propellant inhomogeneity in a Hall thruster. Discharge characteristics are discussed based on discharge current oscillation and radial–azimuthal discharge photography. A highly oscillative operation regime is found to be accompanied by radially enlarged expansion of discharge under limited electron currents. Further increases in neutral inhomogeneity lead to quiescent discharge combined with enhanced electron currents and an azimuthally separated ionization region. An axial one-dimensional classical view of electron flow is found to explain the observed electron current evolution only until moderate propellant inhomogeneity occurs. Through discharge image analysis, it is shown that plasma inhomogeneity increases linearly with respect to the input neutral particle inhomogeneity. The evolution of the inhomogeneity does not capture a stepwise increase in the electron current during discharge mode changes; however, the monotonic increase featured in each discharge regime shows that the azimuthal gradient of plasma properties can contribute to increased electron current. Lastly, the weakened magnetic barrier to electron flow resulting from axial–azimuthal variation in plasma structures is presented as another possible cause of increased electron current in nonuniform propellant operations. This study was undertaken to compare bipolar and unipolar depression on Rorschach testing using the Comprehensive System with reference to healthy Japanese controls.Methods: Patients with bipolar or unipolar depression who had undergone the Rorschach test for routine clinical purposes were followed up naturalistically for a long period. Based on diagnostic confirmation after long-term follow-up, scores on this test for patients with bipolar and unipolar depression were compared with those published elsewhere for healthy Japanese controls.Results: The bipolar depression group showed significantly higher scores or positive findings in five variables of the Rorschach test, ie, WSum6, DR2 > 0, (CF + C) > FC + 2, PureC > 1, and Populars > 7, as assessed using the Comprehensive System, than did the unipolar depression group and healthy controls. Abstract

The detection of object movement that is contingent on one's own actions (i.e., movements with action contingency) influences social perception of the object; such interactive objects tend to create a good impression. However, it remains unclear whether neural representation of action contingency is associated with subsequent socio-cognitive evaluation of "contacting agents", or whether the appearance of agents (e.g., face- or non-face-like avatars) is essential for this effect. In this study, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task with two phases: contact (contact with face- or non-face-like avatars moving contingently or non-contingently) and recognition (rating a static image of each avatar). Deactivation of the frontoparietal self-agency network and activation of the reward network were the main effects of action contingency during the contact phase, consistent with previous findings. During the recognition phase, static avatars that had previously moved in a contingent manner deactivated the frontal component of the frontoparietal network (bilateral insula and inferior-middle frontal gyri), regardless of person-like appearance. Our results imply that frontal deactivation may underlie the effect of action contingency on subsequent social perception, independent of person-like appearance.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, neuroimaging has become a ubiquitous tool in basic research and clinical studies of the human brain. However, no reference standards currently exist to quantify individual differences in neuroimaging metrics over time, in contrast to growth charts for anthropometric traits such as height and weight1. Here we assemble an interactive open resource to benchmark brain morphology derived from any current or future sample of MRI data ( http://www.brainchart.io/ ). With the goal of basing these reference charts on the largest and most inclusive dataset available, acknowledging limitations due to known biases of MRI studies relative to the diversity of the global population, we aggregated 123,984 MRI scans, across more than 100 primary studies, from 101,457 human participants between 115 days post-conception to 100 years of age. MRI metrics were quantified by centile scores, relative to non-linear trajectories2 of brain structural changes, and rates of change, over the lifespan. Brain charts identified previously unreported neurodevelopmental milestones3, showed high stability of individuals across longitudinal assessments, and demonstrated robustness to technical and methodological differences between primary studies. Centile scores showed increased heritability compared with non-centiled MRI phenotypes, and provided a standardized measure of atypical brain structure that revealed patterns of neuroanatomical variation across neurological and psychiatric disorders. In summary, brain charts are an essential step towards robust quantification of individual variation benchmarked to normative trajectories in multiple, commonly used neuroimaging phenotypes.

34. Ventral–Dorsal Subregions in the Posterior Cingulate Cortex Represent Pay and Interest, Two Key Attributes of Job Value

Abstract

Career choices affect not only our financial status but also our future well-being. When making these choices, individuals evaluate their willingness to obtain a job (i.e., job values), primarily driven by simulation of future pay and interest. Despite the importance of these decisions, their underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we examined the neural representation of pay and interest. Forty students were presented with 80 job names and asked to evaluate their job values while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Following fMRI, participants rated the jobs in terms of pay and interest. The fMRI data revealed that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) was associated with job value representation, and the ventral and dorsal regions of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) were associated with pay and interest representations, respectively. These findings suggest that the neural computations underlying job valuation conform to a multi-attribute decision-making framework, with overall value signals represented in the vmPFC and the attribute values (i.e., pay and interest) represented in specific regions outside the vmPFC, in the PCC. Furthermore, anatomically distinct representations of pay and interest in the PCC may reflect the differing roles of the two subregions in future simulations.

Abstract

The effects of thermal conductivity and kinematics of contacting surfaces and viscosity-pressure coefficient on the film thickness in an elliptical contact under pure sliding conditions in which lubricant entrainment vector is directed along the major principal axis of the contact ellipse are discussed on the basis of experimental and numerical results. In the system where the conjunction is composed of surfaces having a large difference in their thermal conductivities, the film thickness is influenced markedly by the kinematics, in particular when a lubricating oil with a rather high viscosity-pressure coefficient is used. That is, the film thickness is much smaller when the surface having a low thermal conductivity is moving and that having a high thermal conductivity is stationary than in the opposite case. It is also found that a rather large dimple occurred in former case under rather high sliding condition moves toward the exit.

42. Ion-Neutral Coupling in Solar Prominence

Abstract

Coupling between ions and neutrals in magnetized plasmas is fundamentally important to many aspects of heliophysics, including our ionosphere, the solar chromosphere, the solar wind interaction with planetary atmospheres, and the interface between the heliosphere and the interstellar medium. Ion-neutral coupling also plays a major role in the physics of solar prominences. By combining theory, modeling, and observations we are working toward a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of partially ionized prominence plasma. Two key questions are addressed in the present work: 1) what physical mechanism(s) sets the cross-field scale of prominence threads? 2) Are ion-neutral interactions responsible for the vertical flows and structure in prominences? We present initial results from a study investigating what role ion-neutral interactions play in prominence dynamics and structure. This research was supported by NASA.
