JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on ISS/JEM) is the science mission to detect extreme energy particles with the energy above 10(exp 20) eV. It is a super wide-field telescope (60 degree) that observes UV photons from air-showers produced by primary particles in dark side of the Earth. JEM-EUSO is planned to be attached to Japan Experiment Module (JEM) of International Space Station. It is promoted international collaboration of scientists among, Japan, USA, and Europe. The phase-A study (conceptual design) under ESA has been successfully finished in July 2004. However, Italian space agency and ESA are in difficulties to move to the phase-B study. Therefore, Japan and US team decided to challenge to the second phase of JEM/EF (Exposed Facility). It will be submitted to call for proposal of the second phase utilization mission candidate of JEM/EF, has released in November 2006. JEM(Japanese Experiment Module)-EUSO(Extreme Universe Space Observatory)ミッションはその焦点面検出器に搭載された20万チャンネルものMAPMT(Multi-Anode Photomultiplier Tube)アノード信号を処理する必要がある。このためアノード信号読み出し回路は省電力・省スペース・高信頼性を維持しながら、単一光子計測から300photoelectron/2.5マイクロ秒までの電荷を処理できるよう、広いダイナミックレンジを持つことが要求される。これらの要求を満たすため我々は、MAPMT用のフロントエンドASIC(Application Specific Integrated Circuit)を新たな方式による電荷信号処理回路を考案して開発を進めている。本講演では、開発中のASICの内部回路の構成、シミュレーションから期待される電気的特性、および開発状況について発表する。, JEM (Japanese Experiment Module)-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) mission needs to process the plenty of MAPMT (Multi-Anode Photomultiplier Tube) anode signal in the focal surface detector. Therefore anode signal readout circuit keeps low power operation, small size and high confidence. And it demands to have wide dynamic range from single photoelectron to 300 photoelectrons/2.5 microsecond. To satisfy these demands, we are developing the electric charge processing circuit for the MAPMT front end ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) with new ideas. EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) is a scientific mission to investigate Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays and the High Energy Cosmic Neutrinos. It looks down the dark side of the Earth from the orbit to look for the streak of UV-light produced by an EECR interacting with the Earth's atmosphere. EUSO will observe the fluorescence signal induced in air by the Extensive Air Showers and the Cerenkov light diffused when the shower front impinges on a cloud top or on ground. EUSO is a super-wide field camera with a diameter of 2.5 meters. The UV-light is imaged by a Fresnel lens optics into a finely segmented focal surface detector. The subsequent Phase-A study is undergoing with a goal for flight in 2010. Study of the arrival direction distribution plays a key role in finding sources of the Extremely High Energy Cosmic Rays (EHECR). Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min (GZK) mechanism limits the propagation of EHE cosmic rays significantly and only nearby sources can contribute to the local EHECR flux. Furthermore EHECRs travel intergalactic spaces almost linearly. Hence, we expect they can be traced back to their sources. Here we report a small-sacle anisotropy of the arrival direction distribution of EHECRs observed by AGASA above 1019eV . This result strongly suggests the existence of point sources of EHECRs.

Using data from more than ten-years of observations with the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), we published that the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays extends beyond the GZK cutoff. We have reevaluated the energy determination method used for AGASA events with respect to various factors. The currently assigned energies of AGASA events have an accuracy of +-25% in event-reconstruction resolution and +-18% in systematic errors around 10^20eV. This systematic uncertainty is independent of primary energy above 10^19eV.

We have observed ultra-high energy cosmic rays above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min cut-off energy by Akeno Giant Air Shower Array. Their chemical composition is a key discriminator of origin models. In the present work, we estimate the average composition by an analysis of muons in air showers with AIRES+QGSJET simulation. The data matches the prediction for light hadron primaries and no indication has been found for a gamma-ray dominance.

The origin of the highest energy cosmic rays (−1020 eV) is not well understood. Interesting models called ＾top-down￣ scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin. The g-ray flux in ultra?high-energy cosmic rays is a key parameter for giving constraints on such models. To study the properties of g-ray showers, we carry out simulation studies that take into account both the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect and electromagnetic interactions in the geomagnetic field. Based on an analysis of muons in air showers observed by the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array, the upper limits on the g-ray flux are estimated to be 28% above 1019 eV and 67% above 1019.5 eV in the observed air showers at a confidence level of 95%. Above 1020 eV, the primary composition is in agreement with an extrapolation from lower energies, and there is no indication that the observed events are mostly g-ray showers. These results provide observational constraints for origin models up to the highest energies.

The JEM-EUSO focal surface is a spherical curved surface, with an area of about 4.5m2. The focal surface detector is made of more than 5,000 multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPMTs). Current baseline is Hamamatsu R11265-03-M64. The approach to the focal surface detector is highly modular. Photo-Detector-Modules (PDM) are the basic units that drive the mechanical structure and data acquisition. Each PDM consists of 9 Elementary Cells (ECs). The EC, which is the basic unit of the MAPMT support structure and of the front-end electronics, contains 4 units of MAPMTs. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on JEM/EF (JEM-EUSO) is a space mission to study extremely high-energy cosmic rays. The JEM-EUSO instrument is a wide-angle refractive telescope in the near-ultraviolet wavelength region which will be mounted to the International Space Station. The focal surface detector is made of more than 6,000 multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPMTs). We are developing the Front-End ASIC for the readout of 64-channel MAPMTs. It has 64 inputs dedicated to each single anode of one MAPMT. The photon counting is carried out independently for each one of the 64 channels. The output of the photon counting discriminators is processed by the digital part of the ASIC composed of a set of counters. We tested the first version of this chip using 400MeV/u Xe beam, and a few error was found at digital part while the beam irradiation.
