We present X-ray observations of the northern outskirts of the relaxed galaxy cluster A1413 with Suzaku, whose XIS instrument has the low intrinsic background needed to make measurements of these low surface brightness regions. We excise 15 point sources superimposed on the image above a flux of $1\times 10^{-14}$ \fluxunit (2--10keV) using XMM-Newton and Suzaku images of the cluster. We quantify all known systematic errors as part of our analysis, and show our statistical errors encompasses them for the most part. Our results extend previous measurements with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and show a significant temperature drop to about 3keV at the virial radius, $r_{200}$. Our entropy profile in the outer region ($> 0.5 r_{200}$) joins smoothly onto that of XMM-Newton, and shows a flatter slope compared with simple models, similar to a few other clusters observed at the virial radius. The integrated mass of the cluster at the virial radius is approximately $7.5\times10^{14}M_{\odot}$ and varies by about 30% depending on the particular method used to measure it., Comment: 32pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The in-orbit performance and calibration of the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) on board the X-ray astronomy satellite Suzaku are described. Its basic performances, including a wide energy bandpass of 10-600 keV, energy resolutions of ~4 keV (FWHM) at 40 keV and ~11% at 511 keV, and a high background rejection efficiency, have been confirmed by extensive in-orbit calibrations. The long-term gains of PIN-Si diodes have been stable within 1% for half a year, and those of scintillators have decreased by 5-20%. The residual non-X-ray background of the HXD is the lowest among past non-imaging hard X-ray instruments in energy ranges of 15-70 and 150-500 keV. We provide accurate calibrations of energy responses, angular responses, timing accuracy of the HXD, and relative normalizations to the X-ray CCD cameras using multiple observations of the Crab Nebula., Comment: 45 pages, 40 figures and 9 tables; accepted for Pulications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

The Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) on board Suzaku covers a wide energy range from 10 keV to 600 keV by combination of silicon PIN diodes and GSO scintillators. The HXD is designed to achieve an extremely low in-orbit back ground based on a combination of new techniques, including the concept of well-type active shield counter. With an effective area of 142 cm^2 at 20 keV and 273 cm2 at 150 keV, the background level at the sea level reached ~1x10^{-5} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 30 keV for the PI N diodes, and ~2x10^{-5} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 100 keV, and ~7x10^{-6} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 200 keV for the phoswich counter. Tight active shielding of the HXD results in a large array of guard counters surrounding the main detector parts. These anti-coincidence counters, made of ~4 cm thick BGO crystals, have a large effective area for sub-MeV to MeV gamma-rays. They work as an excellent gamma-ray burst monitor with limited angular resolution (~5 degree). We investigated the dynamical structure of 53 elliptical galaxies, based on the {\it Chandra} archival X-ray data. In X-ray luminous galaxies, a temperature increases with radius and a gas density is systematically higher at the optical outskirts, indicating a presence of a significant amount of the group-scale hot gas. In contrast, X-ray dim galaxies show a flat or declining temperature profile against radius and the gas density is relatively lower at the optical outskirts. Thus it is found that X-ray bright and faint elliptical galaxies are clearly distinguished by the temperature and gas density profile. The mass profile is well scaled by a virial radius $r_{200}$ rather than an optical-half radius $r_e$, and is quite similar at $(0.001-0.03)r_{200}$ between X-ray luminous and dim galaxies, and smoothly connects to those of clusters of galaxies. At the inner region of $(0.001-0.01)r_{200}$ or $(0.1-1)r_e$, the mass profile well traces a stellar mass with a constant mass-to-light ratio of $M/L_{\rm B}=3-10(M_{\odot}/L_{\odot})$. $M/L_{\rm B}$ ratio of X-ray bright galaxies rises up steeply beyond $0.01r_{200}$, and thus requires a presence of massive dark matter halo. From the deprojection analysis combined with the {\it XMM-Newton} data, we found that X-ray dim galaxies, NGC 3923, NGC 720, and IC 1459, also have a high $M/L_{\rm B}$ ratio of 20--30 at 20 kpc, comparable to that of X-ray luminous galaxies. Therefore, dark matter is indicated to be common in elliptical galaxies, and their distribution almost follows the NFW profile, as well as galaxy clusters., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, to appear in ApJ 636 No.2, ApJ 10 January 2006

A lunar gravity field model up to degree and order 100 in spherical harmonics, named SGM 100i, has been determined from SELENE and historical tracking data, with an emphasis on using same-beam S-band differential VLBI data obtained in the SELENE mission between January 2008 and February 2009. Orbit consistency throughout the entire mission period of SELENE as determined from orbit overlaps for the two sub-satellites of SELENE involved in the VLBI tracking improved consistently from several hundreds of metres to several tens of metres by including differential VLBI data. Through orbits that are better determined, the gravity field model is also improved by including these data. Orbit determination performance for the new model shows improvements over earlier 100th degree and order models, especially for edge-on orbits over the deep far side. Lunar Prospector orbit determination shows an improvement of orbit consistency from I-day predictions for 2-day arcs of 6 m in a total sense, with most improvement in the along and cross-track directions. Data fit for the types and satellites involved is also improved. Formal errors for the lower degrees are smaller, and the new model also shows increased correlations with topography over the far side. The estimated value for the lunar GM for this model equals 4902.80080 +/- 0.0009 cu km/sq s (10 sigma). The lunar degree 2 potential Love number k2 was also estimated, and has a value of 0.0255 +/- 0.0016 (10 sigma as well).
