量研における核融合エネルギーの実用化に向けた研究開発の進展に関して、原型炉に向けた研究開発戦略及びITER計画について解説する。発電実証を行う原型炉の研究開発戦略について述べた後、大型国際研究協力プロジェクトであるITER計画について、量研が製作を担当する超伝導コイル、中性粒子入射加熱装置及び高周波加熱装置の開発状況とともに、ITERを用いて試験を行うテストブランケットモジュール試験計画を紹介する。

Abstract

In this work, we present several new poly(ester imide)s (PEsIs) with low coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE), excellent optical transparency, very high heat resistance (Tg), film ductility, and solution-processability. Symmetric and asymmetric spiro-type tetracarboxylic dianhydrides containing ester linkages (TA-s-Spiro and TA-a-Spiro) and diamines (AB-s-Spiro and AB-a-Spiro) were synthesized using xanthene-based isomeric bisphenols with a fluorenyl side group. The chemically imidized PEsIs were highly soluble in various common solvents including less polar non-amide solvents, and yielded stable solutions with high solid contents. The properties of the spiro-type PEsIs were systematically investigated and compared with those of the cardo-type counterparts. A PEsI derived from 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride (CBDA), AB-a-Spiro, and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB) achieved outstanding combined properties, i.e., a very low CTE (10.5 ppm K−1), excellent optical transparency (YI = 3.4, T400 = 80.8%), a very high Tg (351 °C) and solution-processability. Thus, the PEsIs are promising candidates as novel plastic substrates for use in image display devices. The isomer effects on the properties were also investigated and a possible mechanism for these effects is proposed.

44. Cylindrical breeding blankets for fusion reactors

Abstract

Blankets with a cylindrical structure have been developed for a water-cooled ceramic breeder concept considering a pipe break inside the blanket container. Most existing studies have examined a box structure for the blanket container. Structural change from a box to a cylinder can decrease in first wall thickness while maintaining the pressure resistance of the container. Two blankets with radial and toroidal/poloidal cylindrical axes have been developed. Their first walls are hemispherical and half cylindrical. The tritium breeding capabilities of the developed blankets were studied using Monte Carlo code MCNP5.14. Different combinations of breeder and neutron multiplier materials were considered. With the combination of lithium oxide and beryllium, the tritium breeding ratio of the blankets including surrounding gaps was evaluated as higher than 1.20, leading to a net tritium breeding ratio higher than 1.05.

Abstract

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) silence retrotransposons in Drosophila germ lines by associating with the PIWI proteins Argonaute 3 (AGO3), Aubergine (Aub) and Piwi (1,2). piRNAs in Drosophila are produced from intergenic repetitive genes and piRNA clusters by two systems: the primary processing pathway and the amplification loop (1-7). The amplification loop occurs in a Dicer-independent, PIWI-Slicer-dependent manner (3,4,8). However, primary piRNA processing remains elusive. Here we analysed piRNA processing in a Drosophila ovarian somatic cell line where Piwi, but not Aub or AGO3, is expressed; thus, only the primary piRNAs exist. In addition to flamenco, a Piwi-specificpiRNA cluster (3), traffic jam (tj) (9), a large Maf gene, was determined as a new piRNA cluster. piRNAs arising from tj correspond to the untranslated regions of tj messenger RNA and are sense-oriented. piRNA loading on to Piwi may occur in the cytoplasm. Zucchini (10), a gene encoding a putative cytoplasmic nuclease, is required for tj-derived piRNA production. In tj and piwi mutant ovaries, somatic cells fail to intermingle with germ cells and Fasciclin III is overexpressed. Loss of tj abolishes Piwi expression in gonadal somatic cells. Thus, in gonadal somatic cells, tj gives rise simultaneously to two different molecules: the TJ protein, which activates Piwi expression, and piRNAs, which define the Piwi targets for silencing., Genetic studies have shown that piwi and aub are essential in germ-line stem-cell self-renewal and pole-cell formation, respectively (11,12).
