19. Tuning Neutron Resonance Spin-Echo Spectrometers with Pulsed Beams

Abstract

The neutron spin-echo spectroscopy technique involving pulsed beams can be used to effectively access a wide range of space-time correlations of condensed matter. In this study, the features of this technique, in particular, the modulation of the intensity with zero effort (MIEZE) by using pulsed beams, which is based on the quantum-state manipulation of the neutron spin and energy, are comprehensively examined. A formulation of the MIEZE combined with the time of flight method (TOF MIEZE) is established by considering the characteristics of the pulsed neutron beams. Moreover, a parameter, namely, the detuning parameter, is introduced as a measure of the magnitude of detuning from the optimized instrumental state, known as the spin-echo condition. The phase and frequency shifts of the neutron intensity signals resulting from the TOF MIEZE under various configurations are investigated systematically. It is found that the detuning parameter equals the derivative of phase with respect to the TOF, whose zero-point corresponds to the spin-echo condition. The theoretical predictions on phase and frequency shifts by the established formulation are well validated by the experiments using an intense pulsed neutron source. The detuning parameter helps clarify the principle of the TOF MIEZE technique and can provide practical guidance regarding the implementation and optimization of spectrometers.

Abstract

A photoacoustic sensor is constructed by using an optical fiber. The signal is measured as a light transmission loss caused by a microbending effect. The pressure sensor, consisting of a coiled optical fiber, is installed in a sample cell for absorption measurement by photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). A frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is introduced into the sample cell, and a photoacoustic signal is measured as an intensity decrease of a He-Ne laser beam passed through an optical fiber. The detection limit for a chelate compound of ironII-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthrolinedisulfonic acid is 1.2 X 10 to the -6 M. Performance of the fiber-optic PAS system is compared with a conventional PAS system using a piezoelectric transducer. Potential advantages of the present fiber-optic PAS system are also discussed.

Abstract

This study examines the actual state of music education in the Meiji and Taisho eras as seen in the magazine Music World, with a focus on song education. Music World was published from 1908 to 1923, spanning the Meiji and Taisho eras in Japan. The contents range from introducing songs, current Western music trends, styles of playing musical instruments and music theory. This can be read the purpose of trying to breathe fresh air into the music world over the field of everything aiming at new development based on cultural development until 1897. Though Music World is a prewar magazine, it was reprinted in 1995 and thus was highly influential at that time. Music World is compiled by information related to music from the item of a lot, and various musical information is mentioned in the respective items. Information was presented to concerned musician readers and became an index of music education. Therefore, it can be assumed that musicians throughout Japan participated in music education by referring to Music World. The state of school musical education is also mentioned, and thus the circumstances of such education in those eras are revealed. In this way, Music World refers to a variety of music information. Therefore, it is a suitable historical source for understanding the reality of the music education in the Meiji and Taisho eras.
