3. A 10–40 GHz switched step attenuator in 0.13 µm CMOS technology

Abstract

ABSTRACTA 4-bit switched step attenuator is designed and presented at 10–40 GHz. Body-switching technique is used to improve attenuation range and flatness of the proposed attenuator. The circuit is implemented in a standard 0.13 µm CMOS technology and the simulation results are reported. The design shows approximately constant attenuation range of 13.5 dB across the frequency band. The flatness is less than 1.5 dB in the reference state and less than 1.8 dB in the attenuation state. Moreover, the input and output return losses are better than 12 dB and the minimum IIP3 is greater than 23.5 dBm across the operating frequency.

Abstract

The important role of quality of service (QoS) in deployment of a resilient dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) backbone for global networks requires critical design-phase planning optimisation. The design issues of resilient DWDM networks for bandwidth and delay sensitive applications of dedicated path protection are addressed. A genetic algorithm (GA) model has been developed to solve the routing and wavelength assignment problem using binary variable-length chromosome encoding under two different schemes of bandwidth optimisation (BOS) and delay optimisation (DOS).The performance of the new GA-based resiliency model has been evaluated for four benchmark networks: PAN EUROPEAN, COST239, NSFNET and ARPA2. Simulation results show a superior capability and efficiency for the model to solve this complex, multi-constraint and nondeterministic polynomial-hard problem for BOS and DOS. The nonlinear nature of this process reveals a significant sensitivity for optical layer network topology on the optimum-design QoS. The results also demonstrate that the PAN EUROPEAN network shows the highest flexibility for primary path design, NSFNET for the secondary path and ARPA2 comes with the lowest design flexibility for both primary and secondary paths. 8. Power distribution and Q-factor analysis of diffuse cellular indoor visible light communication systems

Abstract

Comparing with the existing incandescent, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer higher power efficiency, higher brightness, longer lifetime, and have a fast dynamic response in the order of a few megahertz. LEDs are recently expected to be utilised for the next generation indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system. In this paper, we present a mathematical design model as well as a practical measurement for an indoor diffuse cellular visible light communication (VLC) system. It operates at a date rate of 5 Mb/s using the on-off keying non-return-to-zero (OOK-NRZ) modulation format. Using commercially available luminit holographic light shaping diffusers (LSD), we show that the achieved distributions of received power and the Q-factor are more uniform. The range and coverage area of the cellular link are therefore significantly extended.
