Nowadays, the environmental crisis caused by using fossil fuels and CO2 emissions has become a universal concern in people’s lives. Photocatalysis is a promising clean technology to produce hydrogen fuel, convert harmful components such as CO2, and degrade pollutants like dyes in water. There are various strategies to improve the efficiency of photocatalysis so that it can be used instead of conventional methods, however, the low efficiency of the process has remained a big drawback. In recent years, high-pressure torsion (HPT), as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) method, has shown extremely high potential as an effective strategy to improve the activity of conventional photocatalysts and synthesize new and highly efficient photocatalysts. This method can successfully improve the activity by increasing the light absorbance, narrowing the bandgap, aligning the band structure, decreasing the electron–hole recombination, and accelerating the electron–hole separation by introducing large lattice strain, oxygen vacancies, nitrogen vacancies, high-pressure phases, heterojunctions, and high-entropy ceramics. This study reviews the recent findings on the improvement of the efficiency of photocatalysts by HPT processing and discusses the parameters that lead to these improvements.

One of the most promising solutions to slow down CO2 emissions is the use of photocatalysis to produce hydrogen as a clean fuel. However, the efficiency of the photocatalysts is not at the desired level, and they usually need precious metal co-catalysts for reactions. In this study, to achieve efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production, a high-entropy oxide was synthesized by a mechano-thermal method. The synthesized high-entropy oxide had a bandgap of 2.45 eV, which coincided with both UV and visible light regions. The material could successfully produce hydrogen from water under light, but the main difference to conventional photocatalysts was that the photocatalysis proceeded without a co-catalyst addition. Hydrogen production increased with increasing time, and at the end of the 3 h period, 134.76 µmol/m2 h of hydrogen was produced. These findings not only introduce a new method for producing high-entropy photocatalysts but also confirm the high potential of high-entropy photocatalysts for hydrogen production without the need for precious metal co-catalysts.

Abstract The development of new biomaterials with outstanding mechanical properties and high biocompatibility has been a significant challenge in the last decades. Nanocrystalline metals have provided new opportunities in producing high-strength biomaterials, but the biocompatibility of these nanometals needs to be improved. In this study, we introduce metal-protein nanocomposites as high-strength biomaterials with superior biocompatibility. Small proportions of bovine serum albumin (2 and 5 vol%), an abundant protein in the mammalian body, are added to titanium, and two nanocomposites are synthesized using a severe plastic deformation process of high-pressure torsion. These new biomaterials show not only a high hardness similar to nanocrystalline pure titanium but also exhibit better biocompatibility (including cellular metabolic activity, cell cycle parameters and DNA fragmentation profile) compared to nano-titanium. These results introduce a pathway to design new biocompatible composites by employing compounds from the human body.

Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is effective in producing bulk ultrafine-grained and nanostructured materials with large densities of lattice defects. This field, also known as NanoSPD, experienced a significant progress within the past two decades. Beside classic SPD methods such as high-pressure torsion, equal-channel angular pressing, accumulative roll-bonding, twist extrusion, and multi-directional forging, various continuous techniques were introduced to produce upscaled samples. Moreover, numerous alloys, glasses, semiconductors, ceramics, polymers, and their composites were processed. The SPD methods were used to synthesize new materials or to stabilize metastable phases with advanced mechanical and functional properties. High strength combined with high ductility, low/room-temperature superplasticity, creep resistance, hydrogen storage, photocatalytic hydrogen production, photocatalytic CO2 conversion, superconductivity, thermoelectric performance, radiation resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility are some highlighted properties of SPD-processed materials. This article reviews recent advances in the NanoSPD field and provides a brief history regarding its progress from the ancient times to modernity. Abstract Impacts by small solar system bodies (meteoroids, asteroids, comets and transitional objects) are characterized by a combination of energy dynamics and chemical modification on both terrestrial and small solar system bodies. In this context, the discovery of glycine amino acid in meteorites and comets has led to a hypothesis that impacts by astronomical bodies could contribute to delivery and polymerization of amino acids in the early Earth to generate proteins as essential molecules for life. Besides the possibility of abiotic polymerization of glycine, its decomposition by impacts could generate reactive groups to form other essential organic biomolecules. In this study, the high-pressure torsion (HPT) method, as a new platform for simulation of impacts by small solar system bodies, was applied to glycine. In a recent experimental work, as a result of severe plastic deformation, a non-equilibrium solid solution was obtained despite the very limited solubility of zirconium (Zr) in aluminum (Al). This opens up a new path in the development of heat-treatable alloys with improved electrical and mechanical properties, where mechanically dissolved elements can form intermetallic particles that contribute to precipitation strengthening. In the present study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to better understand the process of mechanical dissolution of Zr within an Al model, with Zr atoms segregated along its grain boundaries. Stress–strain curves, radial distribution functions, and mechanisms of plastic deformation and dissolution of Zr in Al were analyzed. It is revealed that orientation of the grain boundary with segregation normal to the shear direction promotes more efficient mixing of alloy components compared to its parallel arrangement. This happens because in the second case, grain boundary sliding is the main deformation mechanism, and Zr tends to remain within the interfaces. In contrast, the involvement of dislocations in the case of normal orientation of grain boundaries with Zr segregation significantly contributes to deformation and facilitates better dissolution of Zr in the Al matrix. The findings obtained can provide new insights considering the role of texture during mechanical alloying of strongly dissimilar metals.

Strengthening by grain refinement via the Hall–Petch mechanism and softening by nanograin formation via the inverse Hall–Petch mechanism have been the subject of argument for decades, particularly for ultrafine-grained materials. In this study, the Hall–Petch relationship is examined for ultrafine-grained magnesium, aluminum, copper, and iron produced by severe plastic deformation in the literature. Magnesium, aluminum, copper, and their alloys follow the Hall–Petch relationship with a low slope, but an up-break appears when the grain sizes are reduced below 500–1000 nm. This extra strengthening, which is mainly due to the enhanced contribution of dislocations, is followed by a down-break for grain sizes smaller than 70–150 nm due to the diminution of the dislocation contribution and an enhancement of thermally-activated phenomena. For pure iron with a lower dislocation mobility, the Hall–Petch breaks are not evident, but the strength at the nanometer grain size range is lower than the expected Hall–Petch trend in the submicrometer range. The strength of nanograined iron can be increased to the expected trend by stabilizing grain boundaries via impurity atoms. Detailed analyses of the data confirm that grain refinement to the nanometer level is not necessarily a solution to achieve extra strengthening, but other strategies such as microstructural stabilization by segregation or precipitation are required.

Excessive CO2 emission from fossil fuel usage has resulted in global warming and environmental crises. To solve this problem, the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO or useful components is a new strategy that has received significant attention. The main challenge in this regard is exploring photocatalysts with high efficiency for CO2 photoreduction. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) through the high-pressure torsion (HPT) process has been effectively used in recent years to develop novel active catalysts for CO2 conversion. These active photocatalysts have been designed based on four main strategies: (i) oxygen vacancy and strain engineering, (ii) stabilization of high-pressure phases, (iii) synthesis of defective high-entropy oxides, and (iv) synthesis of low-bandgap high-entropy oxynitrides. These strategies can enhance the photocatalytic efficiency compared with conventional and benchmark photocatalysts by improving CO2 adsorption, increasing light absorbance, aligning the band structure, narrowing the bandgap, accelerating the charge carrier migration, suppressing the recombination rate of electrons and holes, and providing active sites for photocatalytic reactions. This article reviews recent progress in the application of SPD to develop functional ceramics for photocatalytic CO2 conversion.

Superfunctional materials are defined as materials with specific properties being superior to the functions of engineering materials. Numerous studies introduced severe plastic deformation (SPD) as an effective process to improve the functional and mechanical properties of various metallic and non-metallic materials. Moreover, the concept of ultra-SPD—introducing shear strains over 1000 to reduce the thickness of sheared phases to levels comparable to atomic distances—was recently utilized to synthesize novel superfunctional materials. In this article, the application of ultra-SPD for controlling atomic diffusion and phase transformation and synthesizing new materials with superfunctional properties is discussed. The main properties achieved by ultra-SPD include: (i) high-temperature thermal stability in new immiscible age-hardenable aluminum alloys; (ii) room-temperature superplasticity for the first time in magnesium and aluminum alloys; (iii) high strength and high plasticity in nanograined intermetallics; (iv) low elastic modulus and high hardness in biocompatible binary and high-entropy alloys; (v) superconductivity and high strength in the Nb-Ti alloys; (vi) room-temperature hydrogen storage for the first time in magnesium alloys; and (vii) superior photocatalytic hydrogen production, oxygen production, and carbon dioxide conversion on high-entropy oxides and oxynitrides as a new family of photocatalysts.

Electrocatalysis using renewable energy sources provides a clean technology to produce hydrogen from water. Titanium oxide is considered as a potential electrocatalyst not only for hydrogen production but also for CO2 conversion. In this study, to enhance the cathodic electrocatalytic activity of TiO2, the phase composition on TiO2 surface is modified by inclusion of high-pressure TiO2-II phase using high-pressure torsion (HPT) straining. Detailed spectroscopic studies revealed that the energy band gap is reduced and the valence band energy increased with increasing the TiO2-II fraction. The highest electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen production was achieved on an anatase-rich nanocomposite containing TiO2-II nanograins.

High-pressure torsion (HPT) is widely used as a severe plastic deformation technique to create ultrafine-grained structures with promising mechanical and functional properties. Since 2007, the method has been employed to enhance the hydrogenation kinetics in different Mg-based hydrogen storage materials. Recent studies showed that the method is effective not only for increasing the hydrogenation kinetics but also for improving the hydrogenation activity, for enhancing the air resistivity and more importantly for synthesizing new nanostructured hydrogen storage materials with high densities of lattice defects. This manuscript reviews some major findings on the impact of HPT process on the hydrogen storage performance of different titanium-based and magnesium-based materials.

Magnesium and hafnium, two hydride-forming and biocompatible metals with hexagonal close-packed crystal structures, are thermodynamically immiscible even in the liquid form. In this study, these two elements were mechanically mixed by high-pressure torsion straining, and a new FCC (face-centered cubic) phase was formed although these two elements do not form the FCC phase even under high pressure or at high temperature. Microstructural examination by scanning-transmission electron microscopy combined with an ASTAR automatic crystal orientation and phase mapping technique confirmed that the FCC phase was stabilized mainly in the Hf-rich nanograins with localized supersaturation. Attempts to control the phase transformations under a hydrogen atmosphere to produce ternary magnesium–hafnium hydrides for hydrogen storage applications were unsuccessful; however, the material exhibited enhanced hardness to an acceptable level for some biomedical applications.

The influence of the nanocrystalline structure produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the corrosion behavior of CoCrFeMnNi alloys with Cr contents ranging from 0 to 20 at.% was investigated in aqueous 0.5 M H2SO4 and 3.5% NaCl solutions. The resistance to general corrosion and pitting became higher in both the solutions, with higher passivation capability observed with increasing Cr content, and it is believed that the high corrosion resistance of CoCrFeMnNi alloys can be attributed to the incorporation of the Cr element. However, the impact of the nanocrystalline structure produced by SPD on the corrosion behavior was negligibly small. This is inconsistent with reports on nanocrystalline binary Fe–Cr alloys and stainless steels processed by SPD, where grain refinement by SPD results in higher corrosion resistance. The small change in the corrosion behavior with respect to grain refinement is discussed, based on the passivation process of Fe–Cr alloys and on the influence of the core effects of HEAs on the passivation process.

Abstract Recent developments of nanostructured materials with grain sizes in the nanometer to submicrometer range have provided ground for numerous functional properties and new applications. However, in terms of mechanical properties, bulk nanostructured materials typically show poor ductility despite their high strength, which limits their use for structural applications. The present article shows that the poor ductility of nanostructured alloys can be changed to room-temperature superplastisity by a transition in the deformation mechanism from dislocation activity to grain-boundary sliding. We report the first observation of room-temperature superplasticity (over 400% tensile elongations) in a nanostructured Al alloy by enhanced grain-boundary sliding. The room-temperature grain-boundary sliding and superplasticity was realized by engineering the Zn segregation along the Al/Al boundaries through severe plastic deformation. This work introduces a new boundary-based strategy to improve the mechanical properties of nanostructured materials for structural applications, where high deformability is a requirement.

High-pressure torsion (HPT) is widely used not only as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) method to produce ultrafine-grained metals but also as a mechanical alloying technique to synthesize different alloys. In recent years, there have been several attempts to synthesize functional high-entropy alloys using the HPT method. In this paper, the application of HPT to synthesize high-entropy materials including metallic alloys, hydrides, oxides and oxynitrides for enhanced mechanical and hydrogen storage properties, photocatalytic hydrogen production and high light absorbance is reviewed.

Abstract Superplasticity, a phenomenon of high tensile elongation in polycrystalline materials, is highly effective in fabrication of complex parts by metal forming without any machining. Superplasticity typically occurs only at elevated homologous temperatures, where thermally-activated deformation mechanisms dominate. Here, we report the first observation of room-temperature superplasticity in a magnesium alloy, which challenges the commonly-held view of the poor room-temperature plasticity of magnesium alloys. An ultrafine-grained magnesium-lithium (Mg-8 wt.%Li) alloy produced by severe plastic deformation demonstrated 440% elongation at room temperature (0.35 T m) with a strain-rate sensitivity of 0.37. These unique properties were associated with enhanced grain-boundary sliding, which was approximately 60% of the total elongation. This enhancement originates from fast grain-boundary diffusion caused by the Li segregation along the grain boundaries and the formation of Li-rich interphases. This discovery introduces a new approach for controlling the room-temperature superplasticity by engineering grain-boundary composition and diffusion, which is of importance in metal forming technology without heating.

This paper is a collection of selected contributions of the 1st International Workshop on Mechanochemistry of Metal Hydrides that was held in Oslo in May 2018. In this paper, the recent developments in the use of mechanochemistry to synthesize and modify metal hydrides are reviewed. A special emphasis is made on new techniques beside the traditional way of ball milling. High energy milling, ball milling under hydrogen reactive gas, cryomilling and severe plastic deformation techniques such as High-Pressure Torsion (HPT), Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment (SMAT) and cold rolling are discussed. The new characterization method of in-situ X-ray diffraction during milling is described.

Formation of intermetallics is generally feasible at high temperatures when the lattice diffusion is fast enough to form the ordered phases. This study shows that nanograined intermetallics are formed at a low temperature as 573 K in Al- 25 mol% Ni, Al- 50 mol.% Ni and Al- 50 mol% Ti powder mixtures through powder consolidation using high-pressure torsion (HPT). For the three compositions, the hardness gradually increases with straining but saturates to the levels as high as 550-920 Hv. In addition to the high hardness, the TiAl material exhibits high yield strength as ~3 GPa with good ductility as ~23%, when they are examined by micropillar compression tests. X-ray diffraction analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal that the significant increase in hardness and strength is due to the formation of nanograined intermetallics such as Al3Ni, Al3Ni2, TiAl3, TiAl2 and TiAl with average grain sizes of 20-40 nm.

Aluminium-tin-based alloys with different compositions were synthesized by a high-pressure torsion (HPT) method. The effect of different alloying elements and processing routes on the hydrogen generation performance of the alloys was investigated. The results show that Zn can enhance the hydrogen generation rate and yield by promoting pitting corrosion. The highest reactivity in water was achieved for an Al-30wt %Sn-10wt %Zn alloy. Detailed analysis of the Al-30wt %Sn-10wt %Zn alloy shows that increasing the shear strain and the resultant formation of ultrafine grains and phase mixing enhance the hydrogen generation rate through the effects of both nanogalvanic cells and pitting corrosion.

A high-pressure torsion (HPT) processed Fe21Cr5Ni2Mo (mass%) two-phase stainless steel was used to study the morphology and crystallographic features of austenite (£) precipitated from ferrite (¡) during aging in the (α + β) two-phase region. The starting material was a gas-atomized powder with a completely ferritic structure. The HPT process was carried out to produce a fully dense compact under 6 GPa for 5 revolutions. The compact was given an equivalent strain of about 130. After the HPT process, the matrix ferrite formed a pancakelike nanograined structure with a strong texture, i.e. ND (Normal Direction)//{110} ¡. By annealing at 1173K for 3.6 ks, an ultrafine (α + γ) microduplex structure with high-angle grain boundaries was formed. In addition, the strong texture formation of {110} α/{111} £/ND plane was formed in the ¡ and the £ grain duplex structure. The ¡ and £ phases had average grain sizes of 2.1µm and 1.6 µm, respectively. The area fraction of the £ phase was 37.2%, which exceeded that of a cold-pressed compact, 6.7%. Both ultrafine grain refinement and £ precipitation were accelerated by the HPT process. In other words, the application of the HPT process to the two-phase alloys enables the formation of the ultrafine microduplex structure. The Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationship between ¡ and £ phases is usually observed in the alloy, however, the K-S orientation relationship was not dominant except for the close packing plane parallel orientation relationship, {110} α/{111} £, in the HPT-processed material. A titaniumiron intermetallic with minor addition of manganese (TiFe0.7Mn0.3) was processed by severe plastic deformation through highpressure sliding (HPS). A rectangular strip sample was embedded in stainless steel and strained under a pressure of 4 GPa at room temperature. The hydrogen storage kinetics and activation of the HPS-processed sample were significantly enhanced in comparison with the as-received ingot without the HPS processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
