The present work deals with active noise control by means of trailing edge blowing (TEB) to reduce the tones of rotor stator interaction noise (RSI noise) of axial turbomaschines. A lot of active noise control methods make use of anti phased noise sources to reduce the dominant tones of RSI noise. TEB adresses the noise source mechanism of the tones itself. RSI noise is generated due to the interaction of the potential fields of rotor and stator, due to the interaction of secondary flows of the rotor with the stator and due to the interaction of the rotor wakes with the stator. By using trailing edge blowing, momentum loss in the rotor wakes can be compensated. Hence the periodic surface forces on the stator leading edges are weakend and hence the generated noise sources on the stator leading edges. In the present thesis a rotor with internal flow channels and associated orifices at the trailing edges is used to blow air out of the trailing edges. Hot wire measurements and microphone measurements on a small scale fan test rig were conducted. The hot wire technique was used to analyse the mean and fluctuating parts of the flow field between the rotor and the stator. A microphone array in the inlet and a movable microphone rake in the exhaust were used to decompose the acoustic field to its modal structure and to determine the acoustic sound power level of the dominant tones. The rotor was used in two different configurations, which differ in the radial distribution of the injected airflow at the trailing edge. Several operating points and injected mass flows were investigated. Both configurations were compared by means of acoustics and flow. Wake filling was achieved with both configurations. Although one configuration showed a better overall wake filling than the other, major tonal noise reductions could be found only for the configuration with an inferior wake filling. Noise reductions could be achieved for a certain range of operating points and injected mass flows. The best case showed a reduction of 11.5 dB of the sound power level of the dominant tone and a noise reduction of 14 dB of the sound pressure level of the dominant mode. The needed injection mass flow was 2.5 % of the overall test rig mass flow. Die im vorliegendenWerk untersuchte Methode des Hinterkantenausblasens hat zum Ziel, die tonalen Anteile des Rotor-Stator-Interaktionslärms (RSI-Lärm) axialer Strömungsmaschinen aktiv zu mindern. Im Gegensatz zu anderen aktiven Methoden werden jedoch keine Gegenschallquellen erzeugt, sondern es wird direkt in den Quellmechanismus der tonalen Anteile des RSI-Lärms eingegriffen. Die tonalen Anteile des RSI-Lärms entstehen aufgrund von Potentialfeldwechselwirkungen zwischen Rotor und Stator, durch Interaktion der Sekundärströmungen des Rotors mit dem Stator und insbesondere durch die Interaktion der Rotorschaufelnachläufe mit dem Stator. Durch Ausblasen von Luft aus den Hinterkanten der Rotorschaufeln kann der durch Reibung entstandene Impulsverlust in den Rotorschaufelnachläufen ausgeglichen werden. Damit werden die periodischenWechselkräfte auf den Statorschaufelvorderkanten abgeschwächt und somit auch die dort erzeugten Schallquellen. Für die Arbeit wurde ein Rotor mit innen liegenden Strömungskanälen und zugehörigen Öffnungen an den Hinterkanten verwendet, mit dem es möglich ist aus den Hinterkanten der Rotorblätter Luft auszublasen. Für die Untersuchungen wurden Hitzdrahtmessungen und Mikrofonmessungen an einem Ventilatorprüfstand durchgeführt. Die Hitzdrahtmessungen ermöglichten eine Analyse der Gleich- und Schwankungsanteile der Strömung zwischen Rotor und Stator. Durch die Verwendung eines Mikrofonarrays auf der Saugseite, und eines Drehkanals mit Mikrofonrechen auf der Druckseite konnte das Schallfeld in seine modalen Anteile zerlegt und die Schallleistung der dominanten Töne bestimmt werden. Es wurden zwei Konfigurationen des Rotors vermessen, die sich in der radialen Verteilung der ausgeblasenen Luftmenge unterscheiden. Für die Untersuchungen wurden mehrere Betriebspunkte und Ausblasmassenströme untersucht. Beide Konfigurationen wurden unter akustischen und aerodynamischen Gesichtspunkten gegenübergestellt und bewertet. Für beide Konfigurationen konnte ein Auffüllen der Nachläufe im beeinflussten Bereich der Nachlaufströmung gezeigt werden. Obwohl für eine Konfiguration eine insgesamt bessere Auffüllung des Nachlaufs erzielt wurde, konnte nur für die andere eine Lärmminderung erzielt werden. Dabei wurde für einen großen Bereich des variierten Parameterfeldes eine Minderung des dominanten Tons gefunden. Im Optimum konnte eine Minderung der Schallleistung von 11,5 dB des dominanten Tons und eine Minderung von 14 dB des Schalldruckpegels der dominanten Mode erreicht werden. Die benötigte Luftmenge für das Ausblasen betrug für dieses Optimum 2,5 % des Prüfstandmassenstroms.

This issue of Aerospace Lab is dedicated to Aeroacoustics, the field of science that deals with sound generated by air flows and the possible interaction with solid bodies. As noise issues became a major environmental challenge over the past decades, aeronautic industries have paid great attention to Aeroacoustics for the design of aircraft, as well as helicopters. The articles introduced in this issue of Aerospace Lab describe the work performed in this context. Most of them address numerical simulations and the thorough understanding of noise generation, topics which are directly linked to the “reduction of noise at the source”, probably the most conventional axis for noise reduction among those promoted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) “balanced approach”., Journal Aerospace Lab, Issue 7, June 2014; ISSN: 2107-6596

This paper investigates the effect of a flow control device on turbofan sound generation, applied to a low-speed axial compressor model in a laboratory test rig. This treatment consists in a secondary mass flow ejected through the trailing edge of the rotor blades, designed to fill the velocity defect behind the rotor and to decrease the turbulent kinetic energy related to the wakes, so that broadband interaction noise should be reduced. The design and implementation of the blowing device is first briefly described, as well as the fan stage experiment. Then, the paper focuses on computation methods devoted to the capture of turbulent wakes and to the acoustic response of the stator (with and without blowing). 3D steady RANS and quasi-2D LES approaches are considered for the CFD, both coupled to an integral formulation based on the theory proposed by Amiet, aiming at calculating the in-duct sound power and estimating the acoustic performance of the treatment. Under optimal blowing conditions, significant sound power reductions are predicted by the simulations. First attempts to relate numerical predictions to available measurements, i.e., hot-wire data and in-duct sound power spectra, are proposed and discussed., AerospaceLab Journal, Issue 7, June 2014; ISSN: 2107-6596
