13. Rural Principal Perspectives of Leadership Development Needs

Abstract

Rural school principals often face issues of professional isolation and lack of access to leadership development opportunities, particularly when compared to principals from larger school districts. To address these challenges, the Elgin Children's Foundation launched its Principal Support Program (PSP) in 2017 to support the development of effective school leaders in three states with high rural student populations in the Appalachian region. The PSP posited four components as essential for principal development: professional development, networking, mentoring, and learning plans. The aim of this qualitative study is to determine what participants of the PSP believe to be the most effective in terms of principal development. Research questions include: 1) What is the impact of the PSP on rural principal mindsets and practices? and 2) What components of the PSP are most beneficial for rural principal development? Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and observations. Results indicate that because of PSP training, rural principals grew from managers to instructional leaders, as well as changed their mindsets and practices regarding shared leadership. Most importantly, principals believed that they benefited most from the networking and coaching that the PSP provided. Future professional development for rural principals should consider a focus on providing opportunities to learn with and through others.

Abstract

A method of generating THz radiation by nonlinear mixing of lasers obliquely incident on a finite slab of overdense plasma is formulated analytically. The incoming laser beam exerted a ponderomotive force on free electrons, which started oscillating at a frequency equal to the frequency difference of two laser beams. This results in a nonlinear current leading to THz radiation generation at the reflection as well as at the transmission side of the plasma slab. We have seen the effect of incident angle on the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted amplitudes of generated THz radiation. It is observed that the thickness of the slab and plasma density are the contributing parameters for the intensity of THz radiation generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

OpenCourseWare is an innovative and bold idea. It aims to support learning and teaching programme significantly. Learning material contained in an OCW provides learners an opportunity to gain knowledge beyond their routine classroom environments. These are in the digital form which can be accessed online, thus breaking the barriers of time and distance. Indian academics can play a significant role in creating OCW materials for the students to propagate the teaching and learning process diluting the limitations of traditional educational setup and begin a new culture of “Learning Beyond Classroom”. The present study aims to sensitize the teachers and learners about the potentials of the OCWs. It presents a proposal for creating an “Indian OCW Consortium” at different levels. Also discusses the challenges and issues in establishing such an OCW project.

Around the world, many different languages are spoken, each with a unique writing style. A challenging problem requiring substantial research and cutting-edge computer technologies in image processing is identifying the author of a handwritten text document. In past years, different dataset for character recognition, word recognition, and recognition of writer were reported in the literature. Keeping this in mind, the study introduces the researcher's contributions to writer identification strategies on diverse datasets and techniques. This study's primary goal is to discuss writer identification systems' work on various Indian and non-Indian languages based on various machine and deep learning techniques. The paper also discusses many stages of the identification process to assist researchers in the field of identification by giving analyses of various preprocessing approaches, feature extraction methods, and classification strategies on both Indic and non-Indic scripts.
