7. Theoretical investigation of composition dependence of mass attenuation in silicate based heavy metal oxide glasses.

Abstract

The mass attenuation coefficient for xPbO-(0.65-x) Bi2O3-0.35SiO2 (where x varies as 0.5, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45; in mol fraction) have been theoretically determined in the energy range of 0.001MeV-100000 MeV using computer software NIST-XCOM. Further, the values obtained are utilized to find mean free path (MFP) as well as magnitude of half value layer (HVL). γ-ray shielding parameters delivered by lead and bismuth-based glass materials are compared with conventionally used concrete materials. From the studies undertaken it has been observed that the inclusion of heavy metals in the glass materials enhances the coefficient of mass attenuation and reduces the parameters of mean free path and half value layer. Also, it was observed that the mean free path and half value layer of studied glass samples is lesser as compared to concretes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
