Abstract

This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

Abstract

Usean työn tekijöiden työtä ja työuria ei ole juuri tutkittu, vaikka heitä on Suomessa 8 % työllisistä ja määrä kasvaa. Työsuojelurahaston ja kumppaniliittojen rahoittamassa tutkimuksessa haettiin vastauksia seuraaviin kolmeen tutkimuskysymykseen: 1. Millaista on eri ammattialoilla tehtävä monimuotoinen ansiotyö, ketkä sitä tekevät sekä miten ja miksi ja millaisia polkuja siihen päädytään? 2. Millaisia myönteisiä piirteitä ja toisaalta haasteita ja ongelmia työnteon tapaan liittyy? 3. Millaisin keinoin tutkimuksessa havaittuja ongelmia olisi mahdollista ratkaista? Usean työn tekijöiden ryhmä osoittautui rekisteriaineistoon ja 45 korkeakoulutetun teemahaastatteluun perustuvassa tutkimuksessa heterogeeniseksi. Työyhdistelmät olivat moninaisia ja muuntuvia. Palkkatyösuhteet ja yrittäjyydet limittyvät. Usean työn tekeminen voi olla taloudellinen pakko. Korkeakoulutetuilla siihen johti usein halu maksimoida merkityksellinen työ, itsellisyys ja kehittymismahdollisuudet. Työnteon tapa näyttäytyi kritiikkinä palkkatyöorganisaatioiden ongelmia kohtaan ja haluna osallistua tulevaisuuden työelämän rakentamiseen. Tulokset ovat hyödynnettävissä niin työttömyys- ja sosiaaliturvan uudistuksissa kuin työelämän kehittämisessä.

Abstract

The labour supply of low-skilled – incentives in the unemployment insurance systems. A comparative description based on Nordic countriesIn this report we describe and discuss the changing character of unemployment insurance (UI) systems in the Nordic countries in relation to the changing labour market situation of low skilled adults, from around 1990 and onwards. The focus is on how different characteristics of the national UI systems - and particularly the changes in these systems - may have affected the labour market position of low skilled by affecting their work incentives.This report has two main purposes: First, to construct a descriptive empirical basis for a discussion regarding the relationship between the design of the unemployment benefit system and the labour market performance of low-skilled compared to higher-skilled workers. The second purpose is to lay the foundation for a more systematic econometric analysis regarding the influence of the unemployment insurance systems on the labour market performance of low skilled - compared to high skilled workers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
