The European Space Agency is studying two large-class missions bound to operate in the decade of the 30s, and aiming at investigating the most energetic and violent phenomena in the Universe. $Athena$ is poised to study the physical conditions of baryons locked in large-scale structures from the epoch of their formation, as well as to yield an accurate census of accreting super-massive black holes down to the epoch of reionization; LISA will extend the hunt for Gravitational Wave (GW) events to the hitherto unexplored mHz regime. We discuss in this paper the science that their concurrent operation could yield, and present possible $Athena$ observational strategies. We focus on Super-Massive (M$\lesssim10^7\rm M_{\odot}$) Black Hole Mergers (SMBHMs), potentially accessible to $Athena$ up to $z\sim2$. The simultaneous measurement of their electro-magnetic (EM) and GW signals may enable unique experiments in the domains of astrophysics, fundamental physics, and cosmography, such as the magneto-hydrodynamics of fluid flows in a rapidly variable space-time, the formation of coronae and jets in Active Galactic Nuclei, and the measurement of the speed of GW, among others. Key to achieve these breakthrough results will be the LISA capability of locating a SMBHM event with an error box comparable to, or better than the field-of-view of the $Athena$ Wide Field Imager ($\simeq0.4\,$deg$^2$) and $Athena$ capability to slew fast to detect the source during the inspiral phase and the post-merger phase. Together, the two observatories will open in principle the exciting possibility of truly concurrent EM and GW studies of the SMBHMs, Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Reacting astrophysical flows can be challenging to model because of the difficulty in accurately coupling hydrodynamics and reactions. This can be particularly acute during explosive burning or at high temperatures where nuclear statistical equilibrium is established. We develop a new approach based on the ideas of spectral deferred corrections (SDC) coupling of explicit hydrodynamics and stiff reaction sources as an alternative to operator splitting that is simpler than the more comprehensive SDC approach we demonstrated previously. We apply the new method to a double detonation problem with a moderately-sized astrophysical nuclear reaction network and explore the timestep size and reaction network tolerances to show that the simplified-SDC approach provides improved coupling with decreased computational expense compared to traditional Strang operator splitting. For astrophysical reacting flows, operator splitting is commonly used to couple hydrodynamics and reactions. Each process operates independent of one another, but by staggering the updates in a symmetric fashion (via Strang splitting) second order accuracy in time can be achieved. However, approximations are often made to the reacting system, including the choice of whether or not to integrate temperature with the species. Here we demonstrate through a simple convergence test that integrating an energy equation together with reactions achieves the best convergence when modeling reactive flows with Strang splitting. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence on a $\beta$-plane with an in-plane mean field, a system which serves as a simple model for the solar tachocline, is investigated analytically and computationally. We first derive two useful analytic constraints: we express the mean turbulent cross-helicity in terms of the mean turbulent magnetic energy, and then show that (for weak turbulence) the time-averaged momentum transport in the system can be expressed in terms of the cross-helicity spectrum. We then complete a closure of the system using weak turbulence theory, appropriately extended to a system with multiple interacting eigenmodes. We use this closure to perturbatively solve for the spectra at lowest order in the Rossby parameter $\beta$ and thereby show that the momentum transport in the system is $O(\beta^2)$, thus quantifying the transition away from Alfv\'enized turbulence. Finally, we verify our theoretical results by performing direct numerical simulations of the system over a broad range of $\beta$., Comment: 45 pages, 13 figures

We continue to investigate two-dimensional laterally propagating flames in type I X-ray bursts using fully compressible hydrodynamics simulations. In the current study we relax previous approximations where we artificially boosted the flames. We now use more physically realistic reaction rates, thermal conductivities, and rotation rates, exploring the effects of neutron star rotation rate and thermal structure on the flame. We find that at lower rotation rates the flame becomes harder to ignite, whereas at higher rotation rates the nuclear burning is enhanced by increased confinement from the Coriolis force and the flame propagates steadily. At higher crustal temperatures, the flame moves more quickly and accelerates as it propagates through the atmosphere. If the temperature is too high, instead of a flame propagating across the surface the entire atmosphere burns steadily. Modelling long-time convective flows in the interiors of stars is extremely challenging using conventional compressible hydrodynamics codes due to the acoustic timestep limitation. Many of these flows are in the low Mach number regime, which allows us to exploit the relationship between acoustic and advective time scales to develop a more computationally efficient approach. MAESTROeX is an open source low Mach number stellar hydrodynamics code that allows much larger timesteps to be taken, therefore enabling systems to be modelled for much longer periods of time. This is particularly important for the problem of convection in the cores of rotating massive stars prior to core collapse. To fully capture the dynamics, it is necessary to model these systems in three dimensions at high resolution over many rotational periods. We describe recent developments to the Castro astrophysics simulation code, focusing on new features that enable our simulations of X-ray bursts. Two highlights of Castro's ongoing development are the new integration technique to couple hydrodynamics and reactions to high order and GPU offloading. Simulations in stellar astrophysics involve the coupling of hydrodynamics and nuclear reactions under a wide variety of conditions, from simmering convective flows to explosive nucleosynthesis. Numerical techniques such as operator splitting (most notably Strang splitting) are usually employed to couple the physical processes, but this can affect the accuracy of the simulation, particularly when the burning is vigorous. Furthermore, Strang splitting does not have a straightforward extension to higher-order integration in time. We present a new temporal integration strategy based on spectral deferred corrections and describe the second- and fourth-order implementations in the open-source, finite-volume, compressible hydrodynamics code Castro. One notable advantage to these schemes is that they combine standard low-order discretizations for individual physical processes in a way that achieves an arbitrarily high order of accuracy. We discuss the challenges of modeling X-ray bursts in multi-dimensions, review the different calculations done to date, and discuss our new set of ongoing simulations. We describe the AMReX suite of astrophysics codes and their application to modeling problems in stellar astrophysics. Maestro is tuned to efficiently model subsonic convective flows while Castro models the highly compressible flows associated with stellar explosions. Both are built on the block-structured adaptive mesh refinement library AMReX. Together, these codes enable a thorough investigation of stellar phenomena, including Type Ia supernovae and X-ray bursts. The piecewise parabolic method and related schemes are widely used to model stellar flows. Several different methods for extending the validity of these methods to a general equation of state have been proposed over time, but direct comparisons amongst one-another and exact solutions with stellar equations of state are not widely available. We introduce some simple test problems with exact solutions run with a popular stellar equation of state and test how two existing codes with different approaches to incorporating general gases perform. The generation of coherent radiation in nanostructures has attracted considerable interest in recent years owing both to the quantum electrodynamical effects that emerge in small volumes, and to their potential for future applications. The progress towards exploring this size regime, however, has been hindered by the lack of a systematic approach to scaling down the mode as the structures shrink in size and by the high threshold power required for lasing in small cavities. Here we present a new family of metamaterial-like nano-cavities consisting of metallic coaxial nanostructures that solves both of these problems. The proposed nanoscale coaxial cavities can operate as thresholdless lasers, and their size is not restricted by the mode cut-off. Using these new nano-cavities we have succeeded to demonstrate for the first time thresholdless lasing in a broadband gain medium, and the smallest room temperature, continuous wave, telecom laser to date. The nanoscale coaxial cavities are the first systematic step towards unveiling the potentials of ultra small quantum electrodynamical objects in which atom-field interactions generate new functionalities., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

It has often been suggested that supernova remnants (SNRs) can trigger star formation. To investigate the relationship between SNRs and star formation, we have examined the known sample of 45 SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud to search for associated young stellar objects (YSOs) and molecular clouds. We find seven SNRs associated with both YSOs and molecular clouds, three SNRs associated with YSOs but not molecular clouds, and eight SNRs near molecular clouds but not associated with YSOs. Among the 10 SNRs associated with YSOs, the association between the YSOs and SNRs can be either rejected or cannot be convincingly established for eight cases. Only two SNRs have YSOs closely aligned along their rims; however, the time elapsed since the SNR began to interact with the YSOs' natal clouds is much shorter than the contraction timescales of the YSOs, and thus we do not see any evidence of SNR-triggered star formation in the LMC. The 15 SNRs that are near molecular clouds may trigger star formation in the future when the SNR shocks have slowed down to <45 km/s.
