For the one billion sufferers of respiratory disease, managing their disease with inhalers crucially influences their quality of life. Generic treatment plans could be improved with the aid of computational models that account for patient-specific features such as breathing pattern, lung pathology and morphology. Therefore, we aim to develop and validate an automated computational framework for patient-specific deposition modelling. To that end, an image processing approach is proposed that could produce 3D patient respiratory geometries from 2D chest X-rays and 3D CT images. We evaluated the airway and lung morphology produced by our image processing framework, and assessed deposition compared to in vivo data. The 2D-to-3D image processing reproduces airway diameter to 9% median error compared to ground truth segmentations, but is sensitive to outliers of up to 33% due to lung outline noise. Predicted regional deposition gave 5% median error compared to in vivo measurements. The proposed framework is capable of providing patient-specific deposition measurements for varying treatments, to determine which treatment would best satisfy the needs imposed by each patient (such as disease and lung/airway morphology). Specifically, the sample caching system (SCS) is designed for coring Mars samples and acquiring regolith samples as well as handling, sealing and caching on Mars. As the potential first Martian samples that could be returned to Earth, assuring low levels of terrestrial contamination is of the utmost concern. In developing the SCS, the project prioritizes limiting sample contamination in organic, inorganic and biological areas. The focus of this paper is on the strategies being implemented to clean the assemble the sampling hardware to meet and maintain stringent contamination requirements.

In this NIAC Phase One study, we propose a new mission concept, named Magnetour, to facilitate the exploration of outer planet systems and address both power and propulsion challenges. Our approach would enable a single spacecraft to orbit and travel between multiple moons of an outer planet, with no propellant required. To achieve this free-lunch _Grand Tour', we exploit the unexplored combination of magnetic and multi-body gravitational fields of planetary systems, with a unique focus on using a bare tether for power and propulsion. The main objective of the study is to develop this conceptually novel mission architecture, explore its design space, and investigate its feasibility and applicability to enhance the exploration of planetary systems within a 10-year timeframe. Propellantless propulsion technology offers enormous potential to transform the way NASA conducts outer planet missions. We hope to demonstrate that our free-lunch tour concept can replace heavy, costly, traditional chemical-based missions and can open up a new variety of trajectories around outer planets. Leveraging the powerful magnetic and multi-body gravity fields of planetary systems to travel freely among planetary moons would allow for long-term missions and provide unique scientific capabilities and flagship-class science for a fraction of the mass and cost of traditional concepts. New mission design techniques are needed to fully exploit the potential of this new concept.This final report contains the results and findings of the Phase One study, and is organized as follows. First, an overview of the Magnetour mission concept is presented. Then, the research methodology adopted for this Phase One study is described, followed by a brief outline of the main findings and their correspondence with the original Phase One task plan. Next, an overview of the environment of outer planets is provided, including magnetosphere, radiation belt and planetary moons. Then performance of electrodynamic tethers is assessed, as well as other electromagnetic systems. A method to exploit multi-body dynamics is given next. These analyses allow us to carry out a Jovian mission design to gain insight in the benefits of Magnetour. In addition, a spacecraft configuration is presented that fully incorporates the tether in the design. Finally technology roadmap considerations are discussed.

“NASA’s Mars 2020 mission … rover is being designed to seek signs of past life on Mars, collect and store a set of soil and rock samples that could be returned to Earth in the future.”1 The Mars 2020 Project has a top-level requirement that soil and rock samples contain less than 10 ppb Total Organic Carbon (TOC) 2. The approach taken to meet this requirement is to identify and model for each Mars 2020 mission phase the TOC sources, model TOC transport from sources to sample contacting surfaces, and combine them into an end-to-end model that calculates the TOC in each sample during the mission. The calculations show that Mars 2020 can achieve the TOC sample cleanliness requirement because the project has adopted specific TOC mitigations strategies.

Accelerator (accel) grid sputtering by ions formed through charge-exchange (CEX) reactions between beam ions and residual neutral gas is a critical life-limiting mechanism for gridded ion thrusters. The three-dimensional ion optics code CEX3D is designed to simulate this grid erosion for a single beamlet, with a particular emphasis on non-axisymmetric features such as the "pits and grooves" erosion commonly observed on the accel grid downstream face in two-grid thrusters. The treatment of CEX ions in the code was recently upgraded with a new particle-in-cell (PIC) module to account for the influence of these ions' space charge on the electrostatic potential downstream of the grids. In order to achieve reasonable computation times while resolving the Debye length near the grids and avoiding gross violations of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition, macroparticle velocities in the PIC calculation are limited through a rescaling procedure that preserves ion trajectories and space charge density. The code accounts for beam divergence, finite momentum transfer in CEX collisions, and radial losses of CEX ions from the beam; these effects are important for determining the CEX ion flux to the accel grid because the calculated potential downstream of the grids can become very flat. The upgraded code has been used to simulate operation of NASA's Evolutionary Xenon Thruster (NEXT) during the 51 kHr Long Duration Test - a selection of results is presented and compared with experimental data.

We have developed a physics-based model based on a pseudo-particle description of the electron cyclotron drift instability. A key improvement of the model with respect to previous work is that linear theory is not applied in the event of wave saturation and deviations of electrons or ions from a Maxwellian distribution function. In the acceleration region, the anomalous collision frequency is computed as the minimum value necessary to prevent the electron drift velocity from exceeding the thermal velocity. A functional based on the electron equilibration time is defined to control the transition from high to low resistivity regions. The model was previously applied to a single Hall thruster at its nominal operating condition, showing promising results that captured accurately the location of the thruster’s acceleration region. In this paper, we extend the use of this firstprinciples models to two additional thrusters, also considering multiple operating conditions for each of them. Numerical results are compared to experimental measurements obtained with non-invasive laser induced fluorescence. In general, the agreement between experiments and simulations is good. The model is able to predict the location of the acceleration region for all cases. We observe however that fine details, such as changes in the plasma potential gradient within the acceleration regions, are not captured. The model is also insensitive to changes in the magnetic field strength while experiments show that small shifts in location (of less than 5% of the acceleration channel length) occur. We plan to address the weaknesses of our method with the help of physical insight gained from kinetic simulations of the acceleration region.

Azimuthal direction 1-D and azimuthal and axial direction 2-D Particle in Cell (PIC) simulations of the Hall thruster acceleration and near-plume regions are presented. The axial extent of the 2-D computational domain is based on the ExB drift parameter, 𝑫𝑬𝒙𝑩, the number of times around the channel an electron ExB drifts before being scattered. With only high energy main beam ions, the simulations produced a broad potential profile in the acceleration region. The addition of a small amount of ionization in the acceleration domain at a rate consistent with Hall thruster parameters causes the potential profile to develop two distinct regions. In the upstream portion of the computational domain, the potential profile is very steep, typical of Hall thruster acceleration regions. In the downstream portion, the potential profile is almost flat, like potentials in Hall thruster near plume regions. This bifurcation happens naturally; there is no other change in code parameters between the two results. Without the addition of a small amount of ionization in the acceleration region, the axial electron transport is very low. With ionization, the calculated ratio of electron current to ion current is the same order of those measured in Hall thrusters. This suggests that in regions with lower energy electrons and ions, plasma waves are effective in allowing crossfield transport, and axial electric fields are small. In the acceleration region, the plasma waves are less effective at scattering the energetic electrons, and high axial electric fields are needed to produce the observed cross-field electron transport.

The International Space Station (ISS) is powered by a set of 160 V photovoltaic arrays (PVA) in the US sector. Arcing thresholds for the ISS PVAs measured in the laboratory are shown to vary from -210 V to -457 V depending on the ambient plasma density, where low arcing threshold occurs at high plasma densities. Arcing of ISS PVAs on-orbit is unlikely under normal operating conditions. The net potential of a solar cell relative to space depends on the position of the cell within a string, the (vxB)•L contribution to the potential at the location of the cell, and the frame potential of ISS due to solar array charging. Net potentials on a cell will reach the arcing threshold only on rare occasions. However, the situation changes when damaged PVA strings are considered. Open circuit strings can exhibit voltages exceeding -300 V when the strings are shunted. Under these conditions the local potential on the damaged string can easily exceed arcing thresholds at the low end of the -210 V to -457 V range for ISS PVAs. Because arcing to space on the array will remove some fraction of the net negative charge on the ISS, transient variations in the frame potential are expected during the electrostatic discharge events. We report a new class of transient ISS frame potential variations consistent with arcing on open strings using data from the ISS Floating Potential Measurement Unit’s Floating Potential Probe instrument.

The Mars 2020 rover has very strict contamination control requirements in order to prepare samples for a potential Mars Sample Return. It is known that the rover will out gas a low-level of molecular contaminant on the surface of Mars, and numerical simulations using STAR-CCM+ are performed in order to predict the magnitude of the contaminant deposition to the Martian surface in the vicinity of the rover. This is done in order to determine whether or not the M2020 rover could self-contaminate a potential sampling site if it were to remain in the same location for a long period of time. Simulations are performed under a variety of surface conditions, and it is determined that the predicted level of molecular contaminant deposition to the surface near the rover will not be a significant factor in the overall sample contamination budget.

We present a computational model based on the hypothesis that the higher-than-expected electron mobility across magnetic field lines observed in Hall thrusters is due to the growth and eventual saturation of the electron cyclotron drift instability. The key improvement of this model with respect to previous work is that it decouples the saturation of the instability from the correlation that exists between mobility and magnitude of the wave perturbations in linear theory, thereby enabling first-principles simulations. The model has been incorporated in the 2-D (r-z) multi-fluids code Hall2De and simulations of the H6 thruster at 300 V, 20 A are numerically stable and achieve a steady-state solution at a computational cost that is not significantly higher than previous Hall2De simulations. The computed location of the acceleration region is found to be within 10% of the length of the acceleration channel compared to that inferred by experiments. The simulations also capture well the plasma gradients along the channel centerline of this thruster. To further establish the validity of this model, we plan to conduct simulations of other thrusters and/or operating conditions.
