Abstract Background Common mental disorders often emerge during childhood and adolescence, and their prevalence is disproportionately elevated among those affected by obesity. Early life growth patterns may provide a useful target for primordial prevention; however, research is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to identify distinct body mass index (BMI) trajectories during the first year of life and to assess their associations with psychosocial outcomes in preadolescence (9–13 years). Methods Data were obtained from n = 1778 Greek children (9–13 years). Infant anthropometric data were obtained from paediatric health records and BMI trajectories during the first year of life were estimated using group-based trajectory modelling. Preadolescent emotional functioning, self-esteem, body image dissatisfaction and dieting behaviours were self-reported via validated questionnaires. Associations were estimated using binary and ordinal logistic regression, adjusted for key confounders. Results Four BMI trajectories were identified: low (26.7%), average (41.8%), high (25.2%), and very high (6.4%). Children belonging to the very high trajectory had greater odds of body image dissatisfaction (OR: 1.62, 95%CI: 1.11, 2.38), dieting behaviour (OR: 1.49, 95%CI: 1.01, 2.20) and restrained eating (OR: 1.69 95%CI: 1.14, 2.52) than children belonging to the average trajectory. Body image dissatisfaction was also greater in children belonging to the high trajectory (OR: 1.40, 95%CI: 1.11, 1.76). However, infant BMI trajectories did not significantly predict childhood emotional functioning or self-esteem status. Conclusion Infants with BMI growth in the high reference ranges had poorer psychosocial outcomes in preadolescence. Whilst further research is needed to replicate these findings, monitoring early infant growth trajectories may allow for early stratification of infants at risk of poor psychosocial outcomes.

Introduction The autoimmune encephalitides (AE) are a heterogeneous group of neurological disorders with significant morbidity and healthcare costs. Despite advancements in understanding their pathophysiology, uncertainties persist regarding long-term prognosis and optimal management. This study aims to address these gaps, focusing on immunotherapeutic strategies, neoplastic associations and functional outcomes.Methods and analysis The Retrospective Linkage Study of Autoimmune Encephalitis project will use data linkage techniques to establish a retrospective 10-year population cohort of Australian patients with AE. Two cohorts will be analysed, the Reference Cohort (clinically confirmed AE cases obtained from hospital medical records, n=145) and the Operationally Defined Cohort (AE cases identified through administrative coding data, n≈5000). Univariate statistical methods will identify candidate coding elements for use in the operational case definition and multivariate models and evaluation methods used to identify and internally validate the optimal coding algorithms. The two study cohorts will be analysed separately due to the high likelihood of overlap. Primary outcomes include relapse rate, prevalence and control of epilepsy, cognitive disability, poor educational attainment, delayed tumour diagnosis and mortality. Statistical analyses, including random mixed-effects regression models, will assess treatment effects, covariates and outcomes.Ethics and dissemination This project has been approved by the leading investigators’ institutional Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne HREC, as well as the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare HREC and relevant jurisdictional HRECs where required. The dissemination of findings through peer-reviewed publications and patient advocacy channels will maximise the impact of this research.

Air pollutants are known to trigger asthma and wheezing-associated lower respiratory infections in children, but evidence regarding their effect on hospital admissions in India is limited. We conducted a time-series study over a period of five years to assess the role of ambient air pollutants in daily asthma-related hospital admissions in children in Mysore, India. Daily asthma and wheeze (associated with lower respiratory infections) admissions were modelled using a generalised additive model (GAM) to examine the non-linear effects and generalised linear models (GLM) for linear effects, if any. Models were adjusted by day of the week and lag days, with smooth terms for time, maximum temperature, and relative humidity, and they were stratified by sex and age group. Of the 362 children admitted, more than 50% were boys, and the mean age was 5.34 years (±4.66). The GAMs showed non-linear associations between NO2, PM2.5, and NH3. For example, a 10 µgm−3 (or 10%) increase in NO2 increased admissions by 2.42. These non-linear effects were more pronounced in boys. A linear effect was detected for PM10 with a relative risk (95% CI) of 1.028, 1.013, and 1.043 with admission. Further research is needed to explore whether these findings can be replicated in different cities in India. Air pollution needs to be controlled, and policies that focus on lower cut-off levels for vulnerable populations are necessary.

Despite 82 million populations, Turkey is one of the countries with the lowest mortality rates in the world as a result of successful crisis management and public compliance. Turkey’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been rapid and continually evolving as described here. In this short communication we offer insight into the preparedness and response by Turkey of this continued global health threat posed by COVID-19. Turkey implemented multiple containment strategies prior to the first reported case within its borders- to reduce the burden and deadly risk of the virus. In the absence of a specific vaccine, governments, health care professionals and communities in general are continually working together to reduce exposure, infection, clinical severity and community transmission of COVID-19.

Objectives To investigate the impacts, on mental and physical health, of a mandatory shift to working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design Cross sectional, online survey.Setting Online survey was conducted from September 2020 to November 2020 in the general population.Participants Australian residents working from home for at least 2 days a week at some time in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.Main outcome measures Demographics, caring responsibilities, working from home arrangements, work-related technology, work–family interface, psychosocial and physical working conditions, and reported stress and musculoskeletal pain.Results 924 Australians responded to the online questionnaire. Respondents were mostly women (75.5%) based in Victoria (83.7%) and employed in the education and training and healthcare sectors. Approximately 70% of respondents worked five or more days from home, with only 60% having a dedicated workstation in an uninterrupted space. Over 70% of all respondents reported experiencing musculoskeletal pain or discomfort. Gendered differences were observed; men reported higher levels of family to work conflict (3.16±1.52 to 2.94±1.59, p=0.031), and lower levels of recognition for their work (3.75±1.03 to 3.96±1.06, p=0.004), compared with women.
