This study investigated rural-urban variation in the prevalence of self-reported hypertension and its risk factors among reproductive-age women in Kenya. The 2014 nationally representative Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) data were used in this analysis. The survey adopted a multistage, geographically clustered, and probability-based sampling approach. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to assess the association between risk factors and self-reported hypertension. Overall, 9.38% of the women were hypertensive with higher prevalence among urban 11.61%, compared to rural women, 7.86%. Older age, obesity, having diabetes, and increased the odds of hypertension in both rural and urban areas. We also observed that the odds of hypertension differed by ethnic group. High wealth status was a significant correlate only among urban women with women from rich and richest wealth groups had 2-2.3 times higher odds of hypertension compared to the poor and poorest wealth groups. Women with diabetes had 22 times higher odds of hypertension in both in rural and urban areas compared to women without diabetes. In conclusion, our study found that an estimated 1 out of 10 Kenyan women have hypertension. We believe that this study contributes to better understanding of regional variation of hypertension prevalence and risk factors for reproductive women in Kenya. Future studies should seek to develop evidence-based hypertension prevention and management interventions that are targeted and tailored for urban and rural women in Kenya.

The objective of the study is to examine injury epidemiology and risk factors for injury in CrossFit athletes. A survey was administered to athletes at four owner-operated facilities in South Florida. Respondents reported number, location of injury, and training exposure from the preceding six months and answered questions regarding potential risk factors for injury. Fifty out of 191 athletes sustained 62 injuries during CrossFit participation in the preceding six months. The most frequently injured locations were the shoulder, knee, and lower back. Injury incidence was 2.3/1000 athlete training hours. Competitors were more likely to be injured (40% v 19%, p = 0.002) and had greater weekly athlete training hours (7.3 ± 7.0 v 4.9 ± 2.9, p < 0.001) than non-competitors. Athletes who reported injury also reported significantly higher values for the following risk factors: years of participation (2.7 ± 1.8 v 1.8 ± 1.5, p = 0.001), weekly athlete training hours (7.3 ± 3.8 v 4.9 ± 2.1, p = 0.020), weekly athlete-exposures (6.4 ± 3.8 v 4.7 ± 2.1, p = 0.003), height (1.72 ± 0.09 m v 1.68 ± 0.01 m, p = 0.011), and body mass (78.24 ± 16.86 kg v 72.91 ± 14.77 kg, p = 0.037). Injury rates during CrossFit and location of injuries were similar to those previously reported. Injury incidence was similar to related sports, including gymnastics and powerlifting. While being a competitor was related to injury, increased exposure and length of participation in CrossFit likely underlied this association. Specifically, increased exposure to training in the form of greater weekly athlete training hours and weekly participations may contribute to injury. Increased height and body mass were also related to injury which is likely reflective of increased load utilized during training. Further research is warranted to determine if biomechanical factors associated with greater height and ability to lift greater loads are modifiable factors that can be adapted to reduce the increase risk of injury during CrossFit.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures clinical trials meet regulatory/ethical standards through inspections. If FDA Investigators observe potential violations of regulatory requirements during an inspection, a firm will receive a Form FDA 483, Inspectional Observations. Violations cited have resulted in the death of human research subjects, prosecution of research personnel, and denial of approval for new medical products. Objectives included the standardization of Violation Themes cited for analysis by inspection firm type, geographic location, and Violation Theme citation to provide insight into regulatory violations.Cross-sectional analysis of citations published in public databases between October 1, 2005, and September 30, 2015, by the FDA for inspections under the Bioresearch Monitoring program. For each inspection citation, the main measure was the Code of Federal Regulation cited coded into a standardized Violation Theme for citation analysis.Under the Bioresearch Monitoring program, 3281 inspections received a Form FDA 483 in 2007-2015. FDA inspections have increased over this period but the rate of Form FDA 483 issuance has decreased. On average, Sponsor-Investigators received 4.41 citations per inspection compared to clinical researchers alone receiving 2.21. One-third of violations were related to adherence to investigational procedures followed by informed consent and study records issues.In the last decade, the number of violations observed under the Bioresearch Monitoring program has decreased; however, significant improvements can still be made regarding adherence to study procedures, the consenting of human research subjects, and creation of adequate and accurate study documentation.

Objective: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are one of the most common complications in lower extremity wounds. To date, clinicians employ visual inspection of the wound site during its healing process by monitoring surface granulation and reduction in wound size across weeks of treatment. In this study, a handheld near-infrared optical scanner (NIROS) has been developed at the Optical Imaging Laboratory to differentiate healing from nonhealing VLUs based on differences in blood flow to the wound and its surroundings. Approach: Noncontact near-infrared (NIR) area imaging of 12 VLUs have been carried out at two podiatric clinics. Diffuse reflectance images of the wounds were used to quantify optical contrasts between the wound and its surroundings. The variability in imaging conditions, analysis, and operator dependency were assessed to determine the robustness of the imaging approach. Conversational virtual human (VH) agents are increasingly used to support role-play experiential learning. This project examined whether a Virtual Interactive Training Agent (ViTA) system would improve job interviewing skills in individuals with autism and developmental disabilities (N = 32). A linear mixed model was employed to evaluate adjusted least square mean differences of means scores on the Marino Interview Assessment Scale (MIAS) across different time points. The mean score of MIAS over all questions increased between the first ViTA session and the final face-to-face interview. Participants developed the ability to identify strengths, self-promote, self-advocate, answer situational questions, and respond to behavioral/social questions as measured by multiple evaluations using the MIAS.
