Abstract

IgG4‐related diseases are adverse events that occur after receiving treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). This study reports the first case of IgG4‐related retroperitoneal fibrosis after the administration of chemotherapy with nivolumab and ipilimumab (NI therapy). An 80‐year‐old man developed lower abdominal pain eight months after NI therapy was initiated. Although the primary lesion maintained its reduced size on computed tomography, there was an increase in the soft tissue shadows intensity around the abdominal aorta, bladder, and seminal vesicles, suggesting retroperitoneal fibrosis. Blood tests showed elevated IgG4 levels. Computed tomography‐guided biopsy of the retroperitoneum showed B cell‐dominant lymphocyte infiltration consistent with IgG4‐related retroperitoneal fibrosis and characteristic CD8‐positive lymphocyte infiltration, suggestive of the involvement of cytotoxic T cells. Based on the clinical, imaging, and pathological findings, the patient was diagnosed with IgG4‐related retroperitoneal fibrosis due to ICI. Immunotherapy discontinuation alone did not result in improvement; therefore, steroid therapy was initiated. In clinical practice, IgG4‐related retroperitoneal fibrosis can occur as an immune‐related adverse event when administering anti‐PD‐1 and anti‐CTLA‐4 antibodies for cancer immunotherapy. Abstract

We report the pyrolysis of copper-containing metal-organic frameworks under high pressure and the effect of the applied pressure on the morphology and electrocatalytic performance toward the oxygen-related reactions of the products. The high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) syntheses were performed under 5, 2.5, 1, and 0.5 GPa, and the Cu@C products were obtained except for the 2.5 GPa experiment. Copper formed a shell-like nanostructure on the carbon matrices during the 0.5 GPa experiment, whereas copper formed sub-nanometer sized particles in the carbon matrices with the increasing pressure. It is considered that the transportation of copper atoms by outgassing during the pyrolysis affects the morphology. Electrochemical measurements revealed that all samples exhibited activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The 0.5 GPa-treated product also exhibited the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The overall ORR/OER performance of this product was excellent among Cu-based bifunctional materials even though it did not contain cocatalysts such as nitrogen-doped carbon or other metal elements. The Cu(iii) species in the nano-thick copper shell structure provided the active sites for the OER.

Abstract

We tested the hypothesis that a large body size and rapid growth rate affect the survival of larval Pacific bluefin tuna, Thunnus orientalis (PBT), and analyzed larval growth in relation to environmental conditions. Seven high density larval patches of PBT were tracked with reference buoys in the northwestern Pacific Ocean for 28-171 h in May-June from 2004 to 2008. The otolith radii and daily growth rates of the survivor larvae (collected on later tracking days of each tracking session) tended to be larger and more rapid, respectively, than those of original larvae (collected on earlier tracking days). A large body size was found to positively affect the survival of larval PBT, as did a rapid growth rate, even at an early larval stage (7 days after hatching). 30. Integrated heart/cancer on a chip to reproduce the side effects of anti-cancer drugs in vitro

Abstract

Pre-clinical animal tests are used to assess drug efficacy and safety, but are limited by factors such as their suitability as a model for humans, robustness, cost, and ethical issues. While an organ-on-a-chip using human cells is promising for recapitulating human physiological conditions, it is highly desirable in investigations of the side effects of drugs to integrate more than one type of tissue using a designed circulatory system. We have developed a microfluidic device—an Integrated Heart/Cancer on a Chip (iHCC)—using human healthy heart cells (hCMs) and liver cancer cells (HepG2) to recapitulate the side effects of an anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin (DXR), to achieve individual cultures of cells from different tissues on a single device with three sets of artificial blood circulation loops, microfabrication technology for micro valves and a pump provides accurate fluid operation. Using improved soft lithography adopting numerical optimization simulation, the microfluidic device was fabricated with on-chip integration of pneumatic valves and a peristaltic micropump establishing precision fluid flow. The iHCC developed allows modelling of the side effects of DXR on heart cells caused by the production of toxic metabolites (doxorubicinol; DXRol) by HepG2 cells and the delivery of DXRol to heart cells via the circulation loop. 32. Self-healing composites structure using multiple through-thickness microvascular channels.

Abstract

Self-healing composites using microvascular channel networks have been intensively studied. Microvascular networks in composite in-plane directions are normally utilized to deliver healing agents to damaged areas. However, this channel configuration is not optimal to form robust networks and to infuse large damaged areas. This study proposes a self-healing system using multiple short microvascular channels in the through-thickness direction. First, the advantage of using this channel configuration was confirmed through delamination filling tests. Next, the feasibility of this channel configuration was evaluated by tensile tests and four-point bending tests. Double cantilever beam tests were then conducted to confirm its healing function. Finally, this system was applied to composite stiffened panels and the healing performance was evaluated using compression testing following panel indentation. The healing system almost fully recovered the original strength, confirming its high potential under practical conditions. Additionally, the weight reduction potential of the self-healing system was discussed through a strength comparison of specimens with different thicknesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. Development of Catalyst with Optimum Calcination Temperature for the Application of Zinc-Air Battery

Abstract

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have several challenges that hamper large-scale commercialization because of cost, charge/discharge performance of the cathode catalyst. To overcome these problems, perovskite oxides such as LaSr3Fe3O10(LSFCO) catalysts, were prepared using the complex polymerization synthesis method to investigate the relationship between catalyst activity and calcination temperature. The particle diameter of the prepared LSFCO catalysts and the crystalline structure of the perovskite samples were increased with increasing calcination temperature. In the case of 1400ºC, the highest catalytic activity of the LSFCO catalyst was derived from CV analyses and the constant current charge/discharge measurement for ZABs. It is suggested that the high catalytic activity of the LSFCO catalyst can be obtained by providing a high calcination temperature with larger particles.

Abstract

Some 290 species of squids comprise the order Teuthida that belongs to the molluscan Class Cephalopoda. Of these, about 30–40 squid species have substantial commercial importance around the world. Squid fisheries make a rather small contribution to world landings from capture fisheries relative to that of fish, but the proportion has increased steadily over the last decade, with some signs of recent leveling off. The present overview describes all substantial squid fisheries around the globe. The main ecological and biological features of exploited stocks, and key aspects of fisheries management are presented for each commercial species of squid worldwide. The history and fishing methods used in squid fisheries are also described. Special attention has been paid to interactions between squid fisheries and marine ecosystems including the effects of fishing gear, the role of squid in ecosystem change induced by overfishing on groundfish, and ecosystem-based fishery management.

Recently, bonded structures such as LiTaO3/quartz structures have been attracting attention as a means of obtaining high-performance surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. To investigate the possibility of evaluating the acoustical loss in such bonded structures by subtracting the calculated leakage loss into the water from the measured normalized attenuation factor, propagation properties such as the velocity and normalized attenuation factor of leaky SAWs on a water-loaded 36°YX-LiTaO3/AT0°X-quartz bonded structure were investigated using a line-focus-beam ultrasonic material characterization system and were found to be in good agreement with the calculated values for both the 0°X and 90°X propagation directions.
