20. Electrical and mechanical properties of glass and glass-ceramic electrolytes in the system Li3BO3–Li2SO4

Abstract

Low-melting oxide glasses are promising as electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries. Glasses in the pseudobinary system Li3BO3–Li2SO4 were prepared by a mechanochemical technique. Raman spectra revealed that the glasses contained no macroanions which form networks but consisted only of Li+ ions and two discrete ortho-oxoanions, BO33− and SO42−. The density and molar volume increased and elastic moduli decreased with an increase in the Li2SO4 content in the glasses. The heat treatment of the Li3BO3–Li2SO4 glasses at around 300°C brought about the crystallization to form ion conducting glass-ceramics. Electrical conductivities of the glasses and glass-ceramics in this system were maximized with the mixing of Li3BO3 and Li2SO4. The conductivities were higher in the glass-ceramics of the compositions with small amounts of Li2SO4, ranging from 3 × 10−6 to 1 × 10−5 S cm−1 at room temperature, compared to the corresponding glasses. This conductivity enhancement by the heat treatment is probably due to the precipitation of solid solutions with a high temperature Li3BO3 phase.

29. High-Temperature Performance of All-Solid-State Lithium-Metal Batteries Having Li/Li3PS4 Interfaces Modified with Au Thin Films

Abstract

Li metal is very attractive as a negative electrode material for high-energy-density all-solid-state batteries owing to its high specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, short-circuiting of batteries upon formation of Li dendrites is a serious issue that hinders its successful practical application. An advantage of all-solid-state batteries is their inherent safety at high temperatures. In this study, the high-temperature performance of all-solid-state Li-metal batteries containing sulfide-glass electrolytes was investigated. Symmetric cells with Li3PS4 electrolytes exhibited better Li dissolution-deposition performance at 100degC than at 25degC. In addition, inserting Au thin films at the Li/Li3PS4 interface enabled stable operation of the symmetric cells at high current density (1.3 mA cm[?]2) and large areal capacity (6.5 mAh cm[?]2) without short-circuiting. All-solid-state Li-metal batteries with Au thin films (Li/Au/Li3PS4/LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2) exhibited high rate performance at 2.4 mA cm[?]2 and long lives of over 200 cycles at 100degC. The dissolution of the Au thin films into the Li metal is a possible reason for the enhanced electrochemical performance. These results indicate that interface modification and optimizing operating temperature are promising strategies to achieve all-solid-state batteries with high energy densities.

Abstract

Mechanical properties such as formability and elastic moduli of solid electrolytes are important for the fabrication of all-solid-state batteries and retention of their charge–discharge capacities. In this paper, xNa2S·(100 −x)P2S5 (mol%) sulfide glass electrolytes (x = 50, 67, and 75) were prepared and their formability and elastic moduli were evaluated by an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique and a compression test under uniaxial pressing. The glasses were better densified and showed lower Young's moduli (15–19 GPa) than the Li2S–P2S5 glasses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
