5. Implementing a Game for Supporting Learning in Mathematics

Abstract

This paper focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of an online game for elementary and middle school mathematics. Its aim is twofold: (a) the development of the prototype of a flexible and adaptable computer game, and (b) the evaluation of this prototype, as to its usability and technical aspects. The particular computer game was created in an attempt to facilitate the teaching of mathematics, a subject that is often regarded as complicated by students of all ages. Apart from the game, an administration website was also constructed, so that the educator can configure the game, without that requiring any programming skills. More specifically, the educator can use the administration website in order to alter several of the game's parameters, such as the content and total number of its questions.The game was evaluated in real school settings, both through a pilot study with 12 students and a longterm intervention with 37 students that lasted 14 weeks. The results indicated that the students' opinion about the game was positive, and suggest that with some extensions the game could be used as an effective learning tool. Finally, some corresponding conclusions and future improvements to the game are being discussed on the basis of the findings.

7. Impact of Online Flexible Games on Students' Attitude towards Mathematics

Abstract

This study examined the effects of using an online flexible educational game on students' attitude towards mathematics as compared to the traditional method of solving mathematical problems. Moreover, the study assessed the learning effectiveness of the game and investigated potential gender differences in the game's effectiveness on changing students' attitude. The participants of the study were 79 students who were randomly assigned to a control and treatment group, as well as four coordinator teachers. The game was configurable and it was used as a supplementary teaching method. The intervention lasted 14 weeks and the data collection was based on quantitative measures and interviews. The results of the analysis indicated that the game approach was effective on improving students' attitude towards mathematics and that it also resulted in better learning outcomes in the treatment group as compared to that of the control group. Furthermore, it was shown that the gender of the students did not influence the positive effect of the game on students' attitude. These results suggest that the incorporation of flexible games into the traditional teaching of mathematics could possibly bring beneficial effects.

Abstract

The inherent difficulty of the core subject of Mathematics makes it hard for students of all ages to fully and sufficiently grasp its concepts and engage with it. With such an important matter still being unresolved, in this context, we propose a Game‐Based Learning approach in order to assist the educational process. The main purpose of this paper is the presentation of the design and development of the configurable online two‐dimensional (2D) game “Volcanic Riddles”. This particular game was designed in cooperation with educators, in order to support the teaching of Mathematics in primary school and the first grades of secondary school. The game is configurable in the sense that the (non‐programmer) educator can easily alter several of its parameters, such as the content and total number of the game’s questions or images, via an administration website. Furthermore, the educator can choose which of the game's specific challenges wants to adapt according to the students' needs and level, and thus reuse the game in various educational contexts throughout the school year. Special attention was given so that the administration website is user‐friendly and does not require any programming or scripting knowledge from the user. Regarding the game, basic features of educational games were incorporated in order to enhance its educational value and effectiveness. More specifically, this paper presents the steps followed for the implementation of the game, its technical aspects, as well as the first impressions and evaluation results after it was piloted in the field using real pupils and teachers. The assessment was focused on its usability, effectiveness and motivational appeal. In the pilot study, pupils of various nationalities aged 10‐12 (6th Grade), participated. The results are encouraging and suggest that the game can be used as an effective and motivational learning tool.
