The combination of layered double hydroxides (LDH) with graphene oxide (GO) enables the formation of nanohybrids with improved properties. This work focuses on the structural and catalytic properties of Ce-containing MgAl LDH-GO composites bearing different concentrations of GO in the range of 5–25 wt.%. The synthesis of the composites was performed by co-precipitating the LDH phase in the presence of GO, while their characterization was performed using XRF, XRD, DRIFT, Raman, SEM, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and acidity-basicity measurements. The LDH-GO composites, showing redox, basic, and acid catalytic functions, were tested in two different types of organic transformations: (i) Knoevenagel condensation and (ii) one-pot cascade oxidation-Knoevenagel condensation. (i) The cinnamic acid was synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with diethylmalonate. The composites showed catalytic performances in strong contrast to neat LDH or GO, suggesting a synergistic interaction between the two components. During Knoevenagel condensation, the catalytic activity increased with the GO content in the hybrids up to 15 wt.% and decreased afterwards. (ii) 2-Benzoyl-3-phenylacrylonitrile was synthesized by the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol followed by the Knoevenagel condensation with benzoyl acetonitrile using three different non-polar solvents, i.e., toluene, benzene, and mesitylene. The conversion of benzyl alcohol was higher for the hybrid materials compared to the individual components but decreased with the increase of the graphene oxide concentration.

Membrane separation and gas condensation are combined to reveal an advanced method for the separation of alkanes. First, the applicability of MFI membranes for alkane separation is principally demonstrated by means of realistic adsorption isotherms computed by configurational biased Monte Carlo (CBM) simulations. Next, dew point curves of mixtures comprising different ratios of n-butane (C4) and methane (C1) were calculated according to the thermodynamic methods of Soave–Redlich–Kwong (SRK) and Peng Robinson (PR). From that, isothermal phase boundaries in dependence on the composition of the gas mixture were derived and process parameters under which condensation of the alkane mixture occurs were predetermined. Experimentally, the separation performance of MFI membranes was recorded during separation of n-butane from methane. It was found that liquefied n-butane in the feed and a further liquefaction in the permeate enhance the separation selectivity of MFI zeolite membranes under sweeping conditions tremendously. At the dew point of the feed mixture a sudden rise of the separation factor α is observed. At a temperature of 258 K a mixture with χ C 4 =0.5 can be separated with a separation factor α C 4 / C 1 =174 due to liquefaction. Experiments without sweeping show a similar behaviour. When forming a two phase mixture in the feed an increase in overall condensation efficiency η C 4 is detected in the permeate. At 258 K and pfeed=2 bar and ppermeate=1 bar 29.6% liquefied n-butane was isolated in the permeate from a mixture comprising χ C 4 =0.5.

Die Abreicherung hoherer Kohlenwasserstoffe aus Erdgas oder Erdolbegleitgasen ist ein unablassiger Schritt vor der Einspeisung in das Endverbrauchernetz. Membrantechnologien konnten dabei als Ersatz fur energieintensive und kostspielige Reinigungsmethoden eingesetzt werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde die entsprechende Eignung zeolithischer MFI-Membranen untersucht und der Einfluss von Membrantragergeometrie, Gaszusammensetzung, Temperatur und Druck auf die Trennung von Methan/n-Butan-Mischungen getestet. The depletion of higher alkanes from methane is a key aspect during the conditioning of natural gases or accompanying gases. Membrane technologies could be used as alternative to energy and cost intensive purifications. Against this background the influence of membrane geometry, composition of the gas mixture as well as temperature and pressure was investigated in separation experiments for methane/n-butane mixtures using MFI membranes.

A chimeric cyanophycin synthetase gene composed of the cph A Te coding region from the cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1, the constitutive 35S promoter and the plastid targeting sequence of the integral photosystem II protein PsbY was transferred to the tobacco variety Petit Havanna SRI and the commercial potato starch production variety Albatros. The resulting constitutive expression of cyanophycin synthetase leads to polymer contents in potato leaf chloroplasts of up to 35 mg/g dry weight and in tuber amyloplasts of up to 9 mg/g dry weight. Both transgenic tobacco and potato were used for the development of isolation methods applicable for large-scale extraction of the polymer. Two different procedures were developed which yielded polymer samples of 80 and 90% purity, respectively

The production of biodegradable polymers that can be used to substitute petrochemical compounds in commercial products in transgenic plants is an important challenge for plant biotechnology. Nevertheless, it is often accompanied by reduced plant fitness. To decrease the phenotypic abnormalities of the sprout and to increase polymer production, we restricted cyanophycin accumulation to the potato tubers by using the cyanophycin synthetase gene (cphA(Te)) from Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1, which is under the control of the tuber-specific class 1 promoter (B33). Tuber-specific cytosolic (pB33-cphA(Te)) as well as tuber-specific plastidic (pB33-PsbY-cphA(Te)) expression resulted in significant polymer accumulation solely in the tubers. In plants transformed with pB33-cphA(Te), both cyanophycin synthetase and cyanophycin were detected in the cytoplasm leading to an increase up to 2.3% cyanophycin of dry weight and resulting in small and deformed tubers. In B33-PsbY-cphA(Te) tubers, cyanophycin synthetase and cyanophycin were exclusively found in amyloplasts leading to a cyanophycin accumulation up to 7.5% of dry weight. These tubers were normal in size, some clones showed reduced tuber yield and sometimes exhibited brown sunken staining starting at tubers navel. During a storage period over of 32 weeks of one selected clone, the cyanophycin content was stable in B33-PsbY-cphA(Te) tubers but the stress symptoms increased. However, all tubers were able to germinate. Nitrogen fertilization in the greenhouse led not to an increased cyanophycin yield, slightly reduced protein content, decreased starch content, and changes in the amounts of bound and free arginine and aspartate, as compared with control tubers were observed.

We have assayed genetic polymorphisms in several species of parasitic protozoa by means of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). One goal was to ascertain the suitability of RAPD markers for investigating genetic and evolutionary problems, particularly in organisms, such as the parasitic protozoa, unsuitable for traditional methods of genetic analysis. Another goal was to test certain hypotheses concerning Trypanosoma cruzi, and other protozoa, that have been established by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. The RAPD results corroborate the hypothesis that the population structure of T. cruzi is clonal and yield a phylogeny of the clonal lineages in agreement with the one obtained by enzyme electrophoresis. This parity between the two sets of results confirms that RAPD markers are reliable genetic markers. The RAPD markers are also suitable for reconstructing species phylogenies and as diagnostic characters of species and subspecific lineages. The number of DNA polymorphisms that can be detected by the RAPD method seems virtually unlimited, since the number of primers can be increased effectively at will. The RAPD method is well suited for investigating genetic and evolutionary questions in certain organisms, because it is cost effective and demands no previous genetic knowledge about the organism.

With the environmental risk assessment (ERA) for genetically modified plants (GMP) the identification of equivalence or differences in the composition of ingredients of GMPs and non-GMPs has to be investigated. The strategy is based upon the idea that traditionally cultivated crops have been used safely for many years, thus every divergence within the compounds of a GMP in contrast to its non-GMP counterpart could refer to a risk and has to be further analysed.The BioOK company offers the opportunity to analyse very different aspects from the ERA of GMPs in one hand. Beside toxicological analysis and the determination of environmental effects via soil analysis, we can look into several plant metabolites to identify substantial equivalence. During the BioOK project a GC MS method for analysing approximately 60 compounds from various substance classes (e.g. sugars, sugar alcohols, amino acids, organic acids, fatty acids, sterols) in only one extraction step was developed. According to the EFSA guidelines the chemical composition of six different potato cultivars in comparison with a genetically modified variety and its non-isogenic counterpart are studied. Thus data from different non-GMPs as a base for the identification of uncommon variations in the substance composition for a GMP are obtained.

Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE) of 99 Chilean and 11 Paraguayan stocks of Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, was performed for 22 variable genetic loci. As previously shown for this parasite in other geographic areas, a pattern of long-term clonal evolution of T. cruzi genotypes was inferred, both by strong departures of Hardy-Weinberg expectations and high linkage disequilibrium. Comparison between clonal populations in sylvatic and domestic transmission cycles of the disease in Chile strongly suggests that these two cycles are at least partially separated from one another.
