Abstract

While evolutionary computation is well suited for automatic discovery in engineering, it can also be used to gain insight into how humans and organizations could perform more effectively. Using a real-world problem of innovation search in organizations as the motivating example, this article first formalizes human creative problem solving as competitive multi-agent search (CMAS). CMAS is different from existing single-agent and team search problems in that the agents interact through knowledge of other agents' searches and through the dynamic changes in the search landscape that result from these searches. The main hypothesis is that evolutionary computation can be used to discover effective strategies for CMAS; this hypothesis is verified in a series of experiments on the NK model, i.e.\ partially correlated and tunably rugged fitness landscapes. Different specialized strategies are evolved for each different competitive environment, and also general strategies that perform well across environments. These strategies are more effective and more complex than hand-designed strategies and a strategy based on traditional tree search. Using a novel spherical visualization of such landscapes, insight is gained about how successful strategies work, e.g.\ by tracking positive changes in the landscape. The article thus provides a possible framework for studying various human creative activities as competitive multi-agent search in the future.

Abstract

Amidst decline in public trust in technology, computing ethics have taken center stage, and critics have raised questions about corporate ethics washing. Yet few studies examine the actual implementation of AI ethics values in technology companies. Based on a qualitative analysis of technology workers tasked with integrating AI ethics into product development, we find that workers experience an environment where policies, practices, and outcomes are decoupled. We analyze AI ethics workers as ethics entrepreneurs who work to institutionalize new ethics-related practices within organizations. We show that ethics entrepreneurs face three major barriers to their work. First, they struggle to have ethics prioritized in an environment centered around software product launches. Second, ethics are difficult to quantify in a context where company goals are incentivized by metrics. Third, the frequent reorganization of teams makes it difficult to access knowledge and maintain relationships central to their work. Consequently, individuals take on great personal risk when raising ethics issues, especially when they come from marginalized backgrounds. Abstract

Abstract Background Intrauterine devices (IUD) are used in the veterinary practice as the non-pharmacological method of oestrus suppression in mares. When placed in the uterus, IUD create a physical contact with the endometrium that mimics the presence of an equine embryo. However, the mechanism of their action has not been fully elucidated. The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of mechanical stimulation of IUD on mare`s endometrium in both in vitro and in vivo study. For this purpose, we demonstrated the effect of IUD on prostaglandin (PG) F2α and PGE2 secretion, and mRNA transcription of genes involved in PG synthesis pathway in equine endometrial cells in vitro. In the in vivo study, we aimed to compare short-term effect of IUD inserted on day 0 (oestrus) with day 5–6 post-ovulation (the specific time when embryo reaches uterus after fertilization) on PG secretion from equine endometrium. To determine the long-term effect on PG synthase mRNA transcription, a single endometrial biopsy was taken only once within each group of mares at certain time points of the estrous cycle from mares placement with IUD on days 0 or 5–6 post-ovualtion. Results We showed for the first time that the incubation of the endometrial cells with the presence of IUD altered the pattern of PG synthase mRNA transcription in equine epithelial and stromal endometrial cells. 6. Using Multi-Source National Forest Inventory Data for the Prediction of Tree Lists of Individual Stands for Long-Term Simulation

Abstract

Forest resource maps and small area estimates have been produced by combining national forest inventory (NFI) field plot data, multispectral satellite images and numerical map data. We evaluated k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) method-based predictions of forest variables for pixels in predicting tree lists of individual stands, including tree diameters at breast height and tree heights and then calculated stem volumes and tree species proportions. We compared alternative parameters (k-NN) using k of either 1 or 5 according to preliminary plot-level study and applying either measured trees (1-NN_trees) or mean stand characteristics (k-NN_stand). In the 1-NN_trees method, a tree list was generated based on the measured trees of the NFI plots, whereas in the 1-NN_stand and 5-NN_stand methods, a Weibull-based diameter distribution was recovered from the stand characteristics of the same inventory plots. In both methods, tree lists were predicted for each 16 m × 16 m pixel included in the stand compartment. Both methods performed well and resulted in 8–14% differences in the total volume compared with the field inventory of the 27 stands used for the evaluation. Moreover, the main tree species was correctly predicted for 74% of cases. The RMSE in total volume ranged from 25% (5-NN_stand) to 31% (1-NN_stand), while the smallest RMSEs in volume by tree species were 61% for broadleaves and 65% for pine and spruce using the 5-NN_stand. When comparing input data for a long-term growth simulation, the choice of the method was less influential as the effect of the error in the initial stand characteristics decreased over time during the simulation period. After 30-year simulation of the inventoried stands, the respective RMSEs were 9.4% for total volume and 39%, 50% and 59% for tree species, respectively. The satellite-based data with NFI plots were useful for predicting tree lists for pixels of a stand. However, the accuracy for operational forest management was still questionable. For a larger area’s strategic information, the accuracy is considered adequate.

7. Narrating transitional justice : creative and legal responses to genocide and war in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia

Abstract

My thesis offers a comparative analysis of creative and legal responses to war and genocide in order to elucidate and extend existing understandings of transitional justice concepts. Focusing on the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and the Croatian and Bosnian wars in the 1990s, this project brings genocide fiction - including literature, film and drama - that circulates in English alongside the transcripts and other archival materials of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Rwanda (ICTR). The comparison of the two conflicts is based on their temporal proximity and international involvement during and in the wake of atrocity. The heightened international human rights consciousness led to peacekeeping operations and the establishment of the two tribunals. While this thesis foregrounds shared questions and concerns, it also acknowledges the distinct historical, political and cultural contexts of the two events and narratives about them. Analysing together the creative and legal texts that contain international and local components allows me to explore the potential of interdisciplinary methodologies of working across the two distinct narrative forms. These narratives complement and complicate memories of genocide and the aftermaths of atrocity. Each chapter conceptualises a selected goal of transitional justice: truth, justice, healing and reconciliation. I analyse the construction of truth in dialogue, highlighting the role of social interaction. Discussion about the divergence between justice and a sense of justness introduces the question of what level of injustice is bearable. The examination of healing advocates for a broad understanding of the concept to account for those who try to learn to live with pain or only find momentary relief. I also ask under what circumstances reconciliation can occur, identifying ways in which fear and mistrust hinder the process. Overall, three objectives guide my thesis: navigating the simultaneous universality and specificity of the experiences of genocide, finding ways to work across law and literature, and conceptualising goals of transitional justice.

8. A Novel Internet-of-Drones and Blockchain-based System Architecture for Search and Rescue

Abstract

With the development in information and communications technology (ICT) and drones such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), edge computing, image processing, and autonomous drones, solutions supporting search and rescue (SAR) missions can be developed with more intelligent capabilities. In most of the drone and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based systems supporting SAR missions, several drones deployed in different areas acquire images and videos that are sent to a ground control station (GCS) for processing and detecting a missing person. Although this offers many advantages, such as easy management and deployment, the approach still has many limitations. For example, when a connection between a drone and a GCS has some problems, the quality of service cannot be maintained. Many drone and UAV-based systems do not support flexibility, transparency, security, and traceability. In this paper, we propose a novel Internet-of-Drones (IoD) architecture using blockchain technology. We implement the proposed architecture with different drones, edge servers, and a Hyperledger blockchain network. The proof-of-concept design demonstrates that the proposed architecture can offer high-level services such as prolonging the operating time of a drone, improving the capability of detecting humans accurately, and a high level of transparency, traceability, and security., Comment: 8 figures and 11 pages

Abstract

In this study, I uncover the moment-by-moment emergence of what I call an “experiencing face” during kisses and hugs between romantic partners. At such moments of intimate touch, the facial gestures often momentarily “shut down” to simply give way to experiencing the emotion and tactile “being-with another person” (M.H. Goodwin, 2017: 76). Focusing on the multisensoriality of the face during kisses and hugs, I reflect on some ways of face-on-communication—direct communication through faces touching. Previous EMCA studies have taken a communicative (see Ruusuvuori, 2013) approach to facial expressions. I add to the study of facial expressions by including a focus on the simultaneity of, and an interplay between, communicative and felt aspects of the face in interaction. Taking a phenomenological perspective on interaction studies based on Merleau-Ponty (1962), I approach facial postures from an intercorporeal framework (Meyer et al., 2017): facial postures are expressions of “living bodies” (Streeck, 2013) entailing felt and communicative features.

Abstract

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative gut bacterium associated with dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer, whose prevalence is still common in developing countries. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is the gold standard, first-line investigation for evaluating gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of the study was to find out the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in a tertiary care centre. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary health care centre among the patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy from 5 January 2020 to 5 January 2023 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. Convenience sampling method was used. The point estimate was calculated at a 99% Confidence Interval. Results: Among 1,975 patients, Helicobacter pylori infection was found in 561 (28.41%) (25.79-31.03, 99% Confidence Interval). The indication for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was mostly dyspepsia 256 (45.68%) followed by abdominal pain 205 (36.54%). The most common endoscopic finding was gastritis 445 (79.32%) followed by hiatal hernia 93 (16.58%). The commonest biopsy finding was chronic active gastritis 478 (85.20%). Conclusions: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was found to be similar to other studies done in similar settings. The persistence of H. pylori emphasizes the need of continuous research to address ever evolving H. pylori infections and resistance that are developing against available treatment modalities.

Abstract

Purpose Genetic studies of multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility and severity have focused on populations of European ancestry. Studying MS genetics in other ancestral groups is necessary to determine the generalisability of these findings. The genetic Association study in individuals from Diverse Ancestral backgrounds with Multiple Sclerosis (ADAMS) project aims to gather genetic and phenotypic data on a large cohort of ancestrally-diverse individuals with MS living in the UK.Participants Adults with self-reported MS from diverse ancestral backgrounds. Recruitment is via clinical sites, online (https://app.mantal.co.uk/adams) or the UK MS Register. We are collecting demographic and phenotypic data using a baseline questionnaire and subsequent healthcare record linkage. We are collecting DNA from participants using saliva kits (Oragene-600) and genotyping using the Illumina Global Screening Array V.3.Findings to date As of 3 January 2023, we have recruited 682 participants (n=446 online, n=55 via sites, n=181 via the UK MS Register). Of this initial cohort, 71.2% of participants are female, with a median age of 44.9 years at recruitment. Over 60% of the cohort are non-white British, with 23.5% identifying as Asian or Asian British, 16.2% as Black, African, Caribbean or Black British and 20.9% identifying as having mixed or other backgrounds. The median age at first symptom is 28 years, and median age at diagnosis is 32 years. 76.8% have relapsing–remitting MS, and 13.5% have secondary progressive MS.Future plans Recruitment will continue over the next 10 years. Genotyping and genetic data quality control are ongoing. Within the next 3 years, we aim to perform initial genetic analyses of susceptibility and severity with a view to replicating the findings from European-ancestry studies. In the long term, genetic data will be combined with other datasets to further cross-ancestry genetic discoveries.

Abstract

Background: The morbidity and mortality of acute subdural hematoma (aSDH) remains high. Several factors have been reported to affect the outcome and survival of these patients. In this study, we explored factors potentially associated with the outcome and survival of surgically treated acute subdural hematoma (aSDH), including postcraniotomy hematomas (PCHs). Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a single tertiary university hospital between 2008 and 2012 and all aSDH patients that underwent surgical intervention were included. A total of 132 cases were identified for collection of demographics, clinical, laboratory, and imaging data. Univariate and multivariable analyses were performed to assess factors associated with three-month Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) and survival at one- and five-year. Results: In this study, PCH (n = 14, 10.6%) was not associated with a worse outcome according to the 3- month GOS (p = 0.37) or one (p = 0.34) and five-year (p = 0.37) survival. The multivariable analysis showed that the volume of initial hematoma (p = 0.009) and Abbreviated Injury Scale score (p = 0.016) were independent predictors of the three-month GOS. Abstract

This article explores Yolande Mukagasana and Semezdin Mehmedinović's highly aestheticised testimonial writing about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and the Bosnian War. My analysis of Mukagasana's Not My Time to Die and Mehmedinović's Sarajevo Blues opens up a rich comparison that demonstrates the problematic nature of a social expectation and assumption that a survivor is active and strong in contrast to a passive and helpless victim. To unpack complexity of these categorisations, this article asks two questions: How do these two testimonies portray those who outlived violence and died as a result of it? What do these narratives tell us about the labels of a victim and survivor? After discussing the meaning of a victim and survivor in scholarship and local contexts, I will trace ways in which Mukagasana and Mehmedinović's writing balances expressions of agency and recognition of the uncontrollable. The discussion will also examine actions that may appear less valuable or less visible than others and the implications of depiction of victims as active agents. The comparative analysis of the two literary texts complicates the categories of a victim and survivor, challenging the distance between the reader and those who outlived genocide or war. 40. Using Multi-Source National Forest Inventory Data for the Prediction of Tree Lists of Individual Stands for Long-Term Simulation.

Abstract

Forest resource maps and small area estimates have been produced by combining national forest inventory (NFI) field plot data, multispectral satellite images and numerical map data. We evaluated k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) method-based predictions of forest variables for pixels in predicting tree lists of individual stands, including tree diameters at breast height and tree heights and then calculated stem volumes and tree species proportions. We compared alternative parameters (k-NN) using k of either 1 or 5 according to preliminary plot-level study and applying either measured trees (1-NN_trees) or mean stand characteristics (k-NN_stand). In the 1-NN_trees method, a tree list was generated based on the measured trees of the NFI plots, whereas in the 1-NN_stand and 5-NN_stand methods, a Weibull-based diameter distribution was recovered from the stand characteristics of the same inventory plots. In both methods, tree lists were predicted for each 16 m × 16 m pixel included in the stand compartment. Both methods performed well and resulted in 8–14% differences in the total volume compared with the field inventory of the 27 stands used for the evaluation. Moreover, the main tree species was correctly predicted for 74% of cases. The RMSE in total volume ranged from 25% (5-NN_stand) to 31% (1-NN_stand), while the smallest RMSEs in volume by tree species were 61% for broadleaves and 65% for pine and spruce using the 5-NN_stand. When comparing input data for a long-term growth simulation, the choice of the method was less influential as the effect of the error in the initial stand characteristics decreased over time during the simulation period. After 30-year simulation of the inventoried stands, the respective RMSEs were 9.4% for total volume and 39%, 50% and 59% for tree species, respectively. The satellite-based data with NFI plots were useful for predicting tree lists for pixels of a stand. However, the accuracy for operational forest management was still questionable. Abstract

Methamphetamine (MA) is a extremely addictive psychostimulant drug with a significant abuse potential. Long-term MA exposure can induce neurotoxic effects through oxidative stress, mitochondrial functional impairment, endoplasmic reticulum stress, the activation of astrocytes and microglial cells, axonal transport barriers, autophagy, and apoptosis. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying MA-induced neurotoxicity remain unclear. MA abuse increases the chances of developing neurotoxic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurotoxic diseases. MA increases the risk of PD by increasing the expression of alpha-synuclein (ASYN). Furthermore, MA abuse is linked to high chances of developing AD and subsequent neurodegeneration due to biological variations in the brain region or genetic and epigenetic variations. To date, there is no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved therapy for MA-induced neurotoxicity, although many studies are being conducted to develop effective therapeutic strategies. Most current studies are now focused on developing therapies to diminish the neurotoxic effects of MA, based on the underlying mechanism of neurotoxicity. This review article highlights current research on several therapeutic techniques targeting multiple pathways to reduce the neurotoxic effects of MA in the brain, as well as the putative mechanism of MA-induced neurotoxicity.

Abstract

Moving their bodies in knowledgeable and professional ways in order to handle and connect affectively with infants entails a large part of child health care nurses' work. We deploy a phenomenological approach to videoanalysis of interaction to analyze an episode of a 1-month-old infant visiting the child health care clinic with their caregiver to have their body assessed for a neonatal stepping. Focusing on the co-movement of the baby and the nurse, we ask: how do various ways of moving as a co-embodied entity allow and corporeally prompt the baby's age-appropriate bodily ability to emerge? We develop the notion of professional interkinesthesia to indicate specific forms of body work of nurses which in this case entails moving together with the baby to make her successfully perform a specific health care task—the stepping. Building on Charles Goodwin's concept of professional vision, we uncover how the nurse moves and touches the infant's body in ways relevant to the institutional task. The study shows that accomplishing “normally” developed neonatal stepping is not work accomplished by the baby alone but requires that the bodies of the baby and the professional move in unison. While neonatal stepping is but one specific type of health care task, we propose that nurses' work entails numerous forms of professional touch and interkinesthesia that make it possible to successfully perform different types of health care operations.
