Pharmacotherapy considerations are often a concern for transgender individuals who are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to concerns for drug-drug interactions between their hormone and antiretroviral therapies. Many of the first-line therapies offered to patients for the management of HIV have reduced concerns for safety, resistance, and drug-drug interactions. In this review, we highlight common medications and important considerations for caring for transgender people living with HIV.

Similarity measures are used extensively in machine learning and data science algorithms. The newly proposed graph Relative Hausdorff (RH) distance is a lightweight yet nuanced similarity measure for quantifying the closeness of two graphs. In this work we study the effectiveness of RH distance as a tool for detecting anomalies in time-evolving graph sequences. We apply RH to cyber data with given red team events, as well to synthetically generated sequences of graphs with planted attacks. In our experiments, the performance of RH distance is at times comparable, and sometimes superior, to graph edit distance in detecting anomalous phenomena. The Koopman operator provides a way to transform a (potentially) nonlinear finite-dimensional dynamical system into an infinite-dimensional linear system by lifting the nonlinear state dynamics into a functional space of observables, where the dynamics are linear. Previous literature has claimed that it is not possible to represent nonlinear dynamics with multiple isolated critical points if the set of observables is finite and contains the state; more precisely, such a set cannot be invariant under the Koopman operator. In this paper, we investigate this claim in more detail and provide an analytical counterexample to disprove it. We also consider the convergence of discrete-time Koopman approximation error to the continuous-time error: we show both how this convergence occurs in general and how it can fail for systems with multiple isolated critical points. In particular, discontinuities in Koopman observables at the boundaries of basins of attraction may cause the continuoustime error to diverge; the discrete-time error also suffers from this as the sampling time step goes to zero.

Deception techniques are a useful defensive mechanism that could be very valuable in control systems where updates and patches can be difficult. However, to deceive a motivated and targeted attacker it is necessary to enhance deception platforms with capabilities to model and simulate physical processes to achieve necessary fidelity. In this paper, attributes of cyber-physical decoys are discussed and a design of a system with these attributes is presented. A boiler model use case is provided to demonstrate how this novel deception capability can be integrated into and used to defend a system.

International trade provides an avenue for terrorists to smuggle illicit materials into a target country. Policymakers need models and decision support tools that are both reliable and germane to inform their responses to this. Game theoretic approaches have been used in the analysis of counterterrorism strategies, but the models involved have often been small and abstracted. To address this need, we have developed a multi-game model to account for both security-related and economic aspects of counter-smuggling interdiction efforts. We use different games to represent different types of interactions, and these games are then coupled to each other to form an integrated model. In this paper, we demonstrate the model’s capabilities on a representative system of ports (both foreign and domestic), trade routes, and commodities. We specifically investigate the impacts of changes in screening policies at domestic ports, detection device capabilities, shipping subsidies, and worldwide corruption levels. In these studies, we find that economic factors play a large role in the interdiction task and provide correspondingly important tools for deterrence.

Integration of heterogeneous sensors is a challenging problem across a range of applications. Prominent among these are multi-target tracking, where one must combine observations from different sensor types in a meaningful way to track multiple targets. Because sensors have differing error models, we seek a theoretically-justified quantification of the agreement among ensembles of sensors, both overall for a sensor collection, and also at a fine-grained level specifying pairwise and multi-way interactions among sensors. We demonstrate that the theory of mathematical sheaves provides a unified answer to this need, supporting both quantitative and qualitative data. The theory provides algorithms to globalize data across the network of deployed sensors, and to diagnose issues when the data do not globalize cleanly. We demonstrate the utility of sheaf-based tracking models based on experimental data of a wild population of black bears in Asheville, North Carolina. A measurement model involving four sensors deployed among the bears and the team of scientists charged with tracking their location is deployed. This provides a sheaf-based integration model which is small enough to fully interpret, but of sufficient complexity to demonstrate the sheaf's ability to recover a holistic picture of the locations and behaviors of both individual bears and the bear-human tracking system. A statistical approach was developed for comparison, a dynamic linear model which was estimated using a Kalman filter. This approach also recovered bear and human locations and sensor accuracies. When the observations are normalized into a common coordinate system, the structure of the dynamic linear observation model recapitulates the structure of the sheaf model, demonstrating the canonicity of the sheaf-based approach. But when the observations are not so normalized, the sheaf model still remains valid., Comment: Submitted

We examine the designs produced by different types of difference families. Difference families have long been known to produce designs with well behaved automorphism groups. These designs provide the elegant solutions desired for applications. In this work, we explore the following question: Does every (named) design have a difference family analogue? We answer this question in the affirmative for partial geometric designs.

In this paper, we show that partial geometric designs can be constructed from certain three-class association schemes and ternary linear codes with dual distance three. In particular, we obtain a family of partial geometric designs from the three-class association schemes introduced by Kageyama, Saha, and Das in their article [“Reduction of the number of associate classes of hypercubic association schemes,” Ann Inst Statist Math 30 (1978)]. We also give a list of directed strongly regular graphs arising from the partial geometric designs obtained in this paper.

Since its popularization in the 1970s the Fiedler vector of a graph has become a standard tool for clustering of the vertices of the graph. Recently, Mendel and Noar, Dumitriu and Radcliffe, and Radcliffe and Williamson have introduced geometric generalizations of the Fiedler vector. We introduce the notion of a partial geometric difference family as a variation on the classical difference family and a generalization of partial geometric difference sets. We study the relationship between partial geometric difference families and both partial geometric designs and difference families, and show that partial geometric difference families give rise to partial geometric designs. We construct several infinite families of partial geometric difference families using Galois rings and the cyclotomy of Galois fields. From these partial geometric difference families, we generate a list of infinite families of partial geometric designs and directed strongly regular graphs.

Object Although several improvements have been observed in the past few years in shunt technology, currently available systems still present several associated problems. Among these, overdrainage along with its complications remains one of the great challenges for new shunt designs. To address the so-called siphoning effect, the authors provide a practical example of how it is possible to decouple the activation pressure and the pressure gradient across the valve through a 3–key component system. In this new shunt design, the flow is expected to depend only on the intracranial pressure and not on the pressure gradient across the valve, thus avoiding the so-called siphoning effect. Methods The authors used computer models to theoretically evaluate the mechanical variables involved in the operation of the newly designed valve, such as the fluid's Reynolds number, proximal pressure, distal pressure, pressure gradient, actual flow rate, and expected flow rate. After fabrication of the first superscaled model, the authors performed benchmark tests to analyze the performance of the new shunt prototype, and the obtained data were compared with the results predicted by the previous mathematical models. Results The final design of the new paddle wheel valve with the 3–key component antisiphoning system was tested in the hydrodynamics laboratory to prove that the siphoning effect did not occur. According to the calculations obtained using the LabVIEW program during the experiments, each time the distal pressure decreased without an increase in the proximal pressure (despite the range of the pressure gradient), the pin blocked the spinning of the paddle wheels, and the calculated fluid velocity through the system tended to zero. Such a situation was significantly different from the expected flow rate for such a pressure gradient in a siphoning situation without the new antisiphon system. Conclusions The design of this new prototype with a 3–key component antisiphoning system demonstrated that it is possible to decouple the activation pressure and the pressure gradient across the valve, avoiding the siphoning effect. Although further developments are necessary to provide a model compatible to clinical use, the authors believe that this new prototype illustrates the possibility of successfully addressing the siphoning effect by using a simple 3–key component system that is able to decouple the activation pressure and the pressure gradient across the valve by using a separate pressure chamber. It is expected that such proof of concept may significantly contribute to future shunt designs attempting to address the problem of overdrainage due to the siphoning effect.

The cyber environment has rapidly evolved from a curiosity to an essential component of the contemporary world. As the cyber environment has expanded and become more complex, so have the nature of adversaries and styles of attacks. Today, cyber incidents are an expected part of life. As a result, cybersecurity research emerged to address adversarial attacks interfering with or preventing normal cyber activities. Historical response to cybersecurity attacks is heavily skewed to tactical responses with an emphasis on rapid recovery. While threat mitigation is important and can be time critical, a knowledge gap exists with respect to developing the science of cybersecurity. Such a science will enable the development and testing of theories that lead to understanding the broad sweep of cyber threats and the ability to assess trade-offs in sustaining network missions while mitigating attacks. The Asymmetric Resilient Cybersecurity Initiative at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment to develop approaches for shifting the advantage to the defender and sustaining the operability of systems under attack. The initiative established a Science Council to focus attention on the research process for cybersecurity. The Council shares science practices, critiques research plans, and aids in documenting and reporting reproducible research results. The Council members represent ecology, economics, statistics, physics, computational chemistry, microbiology and genetics, and geochemistry. This paper reports the initial work of the Science Council to implement the scientific method in cybersecurity research. The second section describes the scientific method. The third section in this paper discusses scientific practices for cybersecurity research. Section four describes initial impacts of applying the science practices to cybersecurity research.

Many aspects of our daily lives now rely on computers, including communications, transportation, government, finance, medicine, and education. However, with increased dependence comes increased vulnerability. Therefore recognizing attacks quickly is critical. In this paper, we introduce a new anomaly detection algorithm based on persistent homology, a tool which computes summary statistics of a manifold. The idea is to represent a cyber network with a dynamic point cloud and compare the statistics over time. The robustness of persistent homology makes for a very strong comparison invariant.

This study demonstrated the concept of using speed modulation in a continuous-flow total artificial heart (CFTAH) to shape arterial pressure waveforms and to adjust pressure pulsatility. A programmable function generator was used to determine the optimum pulsatile speed profile. Three speed profiles (sinusoidal, rectangular, and optimized [a profile optimized for generation of a physiologic arterial pressure waveform]) were evaluated using the CFTAH mock circulatory loop. Hemodynamic parameters were recorded at average pump speeds of 2,700 rpm and a modulation cycle of 60 beats per minute. The effects of varying physiologically relevant vascular resistance and lumped compliance on the hemodynamics were assessed. The feasibility of using speed modulation to manipulate systemic arterial pressure waveforms, including a physiologic pressure waveform, was demonstrated in vitro. The additional pump power consumption needed to generate a physiologic pulsatile pressure was 16.2% of the power consumption in nonpulsatile continuous-flow mode. The induced pressure waveforms and pulse pressure were shown to be very responsive to changes in both systemic vascular resistance and arterial compliance. This system also allowed pulsatile pulmonary arterial waveform. Speed modulation in the continuous-flow total artificial heart could enable physicians to obtain desired pressure waveforms by simple manual adjustment of speed control input waveforms.

The principal permanent rank characteristic sequence is a binary sequence $r_0 r_1 \ldots r_n$ where $r_k = 1$ if there exists a principal square submatrix of size $k$ with nonzero permanent and $r_k = 0$ otherwise, and $r_0 = 1$ if there is a zero diagonal entry. A characterization is provided for all principal permanent rank sequences obtainable by the family of nonnegative matrices as well as the family of nonnegative symmetric matrices. All planar graphs are 4-colorable and 5-choosable, while some planar graphs are not 4-choosable. Determining which properties guarantee that a planar graph can be colored using lists of size four has received significant attention. In terms of constraining the structure of the graph, for any $\ell \in \{3,4,5,6,7\}$, a planar graph is 4-choosable if it is $\ell$-cycle-free. In terms of constraining the list assignment, one refinement of $k$-choosability is choosability with separation. A graph is $(k,s)$-choosable if the graph is colorable from lists of size $k$ where adjacent vertices have at most $s$ common colors in their lists. Every planar graph is $(4,1)$-choosable, but there exist planar graphs that are not $(4,3)$-choosable. It is an open question whether planar graphs are always $(4,2)$-choosable. A chorded $\ell$-cycle is an $\ell$-cycle with one additional edge. We demonstrate for each $\ell \in \{5,6,7\}$ that a planar graph is $(4,2)$-choosable if it does not contain chorded $\ell$-cycles., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures. A loop graph $\mf G$ is a finite undirected graph that allows loops but does not allow multiple edges. The set $\sym(\lG)$ of real symmetric matrices associated with a loop graph $\lG$ of order $n$ is the set of symmetric matrices $A=[a_{ij}]\in\Rnn$ such that $a_{ij}\ne 0$ if and only if $ij\in E(\lG)$. The minimum (maximum) rank of a loop graph is the minimum (maximum) of the ranks of the matrices in $\sym(\lG)$. We characterize loop graphs having minimum rank at most two (by forbidden induced subgraphs and graph complements) and loop graphs having minimum rank equal to the order of the graph. A Schur complement reduction technique is used to determine the minimum ranks of cycles with various loop configurations; we also determine the minimum ranks of complete graphs and paths with various configurations of loops. Unlike simple graphs, loop graphs can have maximum rank less than the order of the graph. We present some results on maximum rank and which ranks between minimum and maximum can be realized. Interesting open questions remain.

The evaluation of clinical competence of nursing students is often considered subjective and inconsistent. To avoid these pitfalls, the author developed criteria for a five-point rating scale for evaluation of student clinical performance. This rating system may be applied to any professional behavior and provides the student with diagnostic feedback as well as a fair assessment of performance.
