Introduction One way the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) works to achieve national security is through security cooperation, by way of building and enhancing partner nation capacity. This study evaluated a health-related security cooperation training initiative delivered by the DoD to military peacekeepers. The study specifically examined outcomes of change, including the beginning phase of sustainability. Materials and Methods The U.S. DoD employed a train-the-trainer model in Ghana, Rwanda, Senegal, and Uganda to support the African Peacekeeping Rapid Response Partnership program. U.S. instructors trained 192 peacekeepers through 11 training iterations between December 2016 and March 2020. A mixed-method explanatory sequential design was used to explore training outcomes. Quantitatively, three hypotheses were tested using nonparametric statistical analysis. Qualitative analysis of documents was used to inform and contextually understand the quantitative results. This study was submitted to the George Washington University Institutional Review Board and was fully approved (NCR202918). Results Quantitative and qualitative results indicated improved short-term public health knowledge and upskill among partner nation participants. There was the beginning of a cascade effect of the partner nations’ ability to autonomously teach tasks and skills to their military to sustain the initiative. Differences in achieving and maintaining change outcomes were related to student characteristics, the training course, and the partner nation. Conclusions This research serves as the first published study to empirically examine health-related security cooperation train-the-trainer initiative change outcomes. This research is an essential building block to empirically evaluate and capture change outcomes from security cooperation capacity building training initiatives. The findings and recommendations inform security cooperation policy and associated investments.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to share the perspective of the founder and CEO of Edible Arrangements, Tariq Farid, while exploring the importance of life stories and authenticity to successful leadership and entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approachThe paper was based on a structured interview format. Tariq Farid's responses were used to guide and inform the discussion.FindingsThis paper presents the views of a successful Pakistani‐American. It found that a person's life stories and early socialization provide meaning and self‐awareness that are important to their success as a leader and an entrepreneur.Originality/valueThis paper offers the perspective of a CEO of a multinational corporation with first‐hand experience and knowledge of being a successful and innovative entrepreneur. His perspectives are valuable to the discussion on the influence of life stories, being authentic and the role of South Asian values and upbringing in honing leadership and entrepreneurship qualities.

CD47 is a cell surface glycoprotein that interacts with signal regulatory protein alpha (SIRPα) on macrophages and dendritic cells triggering a “don't eat me” signal that inhibits phagocytosis. Many tumors evade immune surveillance by overexpressing CD47, thereby preventing their recognition by phagocytes. Blocking the interaction of SIRPα/CD47 promotes phagocytosis and tumor cell destruction leading to a reduction in tumor burden. We have developed a humanized anti-CD47 antibody, AO-176, that blocks the interaction between CD47 and SIRPα and exhibits several additional novel functional characteristics. These characteristics include the induction of cell death in multiple human tumor cell lines in a cell autonomous manner (not ADCC), assessed by an increase in phosphatidylserine/7AAD positive staining. A second novel characteristic is enhanced binding to tumor cells at acidic pH. AO-176 binds to human tumor cell lines in the high pM to low nM range at physiologic pH, however, binding is enhanced up to 20-fold at an acidic pH of 6.5. The acidic pH of the tumor microenvironment which ranges from 6.4-7.2 is characteristic of solid tumors and correlates with tumor progression and metastasis. As a result of this enhanced binding at acidic pH, AO-176 has the potential added advantage of tumor-specific targeting. A third novel characteristic exhibited by AO-176 is its selective binding to tumor cells while exhibiting reduced binding to normal cells including red blood cells (cynomolgus monkey and human), endothelial, epithelial and skeletal muscle cells. In addition to these novel characteristics, AO-176 also exhibits dose-dependent efficacy in multiple mouse tumor models. Taken together, the unique combination of functional characteristics of AO-176, including induction of cell-autonomous killing, enhanced binding to tumor cells at acidic pH, significantly reduced binding to normal cells and potent in vivo efficacy provides the preclinical rationale for further development. Background: In 1998, the NIH's National Cancer Institute created the Behavioral Research Program (BRP) within the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences. A primary goal of the BRP is to stimulate and expand the field of behavioral research in cancer prevention and control. To help achieve this end, BRP created the Small Grants Program. This study examines the effect of the program on the careers of new investigators in cancer prevention and control. Methods: A mixed-method analysis was conducted on data from a grantee survey and publication and post-award activity records. Results: A majority of grantees (n = 197) submitted additional research grant applications, and of these grantees, 37% (n = 73) were awarded funding from the NIH and 20% (n = 40) received funding at the R01 level. Grantees published research results in journals or presented at professional conferences. Of the 47 grantees who provided their curriculum vitae, 72% (n = 34) published or had in press at least one article resulting from their small grant (R03) and 40% (n = 19/47) published at least one article as lead author. These articles were cited a total of 134 times in 85 journals. Conclusions: By supporting investigators' initial behavioral research applications, the Small Grants Program seems to open the door to additional “independent” research opportunities and fulfills the NIH's goals of supporting early career investigators and stimulating promising new areas of cancer research. There is a pervasive but implicit emphasis on a liberal feminist political agenda within the field of the psychology of women. This perspective is reflected by and inadvertently reproduced in many introductory texts to the psychology of women, although the perspective is usually unacknowledged. I argue that authors need to make their political perspectives explicit and to find ways to include other feminist viewpoints. Greater inclusion of socialist and radical feminist theoretical perspectives will strengthen the discipline of feminist psychology and promote greater inclusion of marginalized groups.

The study examines the relationship between hallucinations/delusions and violent behaviour in a sample of long-stay inpatients with chronic schizophrenia. Thirty-one subjects defined as violent and meeting DSM-111-R criteria for schizophrenia were compared with 31 matched non-violent schizophrenia patients with respect to detailed phenomenologies of auditory hallucinations using the Mental Health Research Institute Unusual Perceptions Schedule (Carter and Copolov, 1993; Carter et al., 1995) and delusions using the Maudsley Assessment of Delusions Schedule (Taylor et al., 1994). Patients in the violent groups were significantly more likely to experience negative emotions, tone and content related to their voices than those in the non-violent group, whilst patients in the non-violent group were more likely to experience positive emotions, tone and content related to their voices. Patients in the non-violent group were significantly more likely to report success in coping with their voices. There was no association between command hallucinations and violent behaviour. Patients in the violent group were more likely to hold persecutory delusional beliefs than those in the non-violent group, while patients in the non-violent group were likely to hold grandiose delusions than those in the violent group. Patients in the violent group were also more likely to report that the delusion made them feel angry, while those in the non-violent group were more likely to report that the delusion made them feel elated. The results suggest specific aspects of the phenomenologies of hallucinations and delusions that should be clinically assessed to determine the likelihood of violence as a result of such psychotic symptoms.

This study determined the prevalence and features of assaults on staff, compared them with other aggressive incidents by psychiatric in-patients, and studied their relationship with the ward atmosphere. There were 181 physical assaults among 279 staff in two months, i.e. 389 assaults per 100 staff per year. A few patients were responsible for the majority of the assaults. Most assaults were triggered off by staff-patient interaction. About one-third of the staff were significantly psychologically shaken by the incidents. Patients were more likely to be provoked and used more severe means of aggression against staff than against other targets of aggression. There were no significant differences between the characteristics of patients who assaulted staff and those who had other targets of aggression.

Forty schizophrenic patients were included in a study of the relationship between serotonin function as measured by 3 H-paroxetine binding to platelet membranes and aggressive behaviour. Patients classified as either aggressive or non-aggressive were paired by age, sex and duration of illness. 3 H-Paroxetine binding variations were avoided by taking samples for each pair between 09:00 and 11:00 h, within 4 days of each other, and by assaying pairs of samples together. The mean K d for the aggressive group was 0.193 ± 0.126 nM and the mean K d for the non-aggressive group was 0.176+0.164 nM. The mean B max for the aggressive group was 1451 ±386 fmol/mg protein while the mean for the non-aggressive group was 1549 ± 375 fmol/mg protein. There was no significant difference between the groups for either parameter, K d or B max . There were no significant correlations between psychopathology ratings including positive and negative symptoms, depression, suicidal thoughts, impulse control, as well as both past and present history of aggression, hostility and irritability traits, psychopathic deviance and either B max and K d . This study finds no relationship between aggressive behaviour and peripheral serotonin function as measured by 3 H-paroxetine binding to platelet membranes.

The objective of this study was to determine whether extrapyramidal side effects of neuroleptics are associated with aggressive behaviour in schizophrenia. Thirty-one physically aggressive patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for schizophrenia were compared with 31 matched non-aggressive patients in relation to their extrapyramidal side effects, including drug-induced parkinsonian (DIP) symptoms, akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. The aggressive group had significantly more severe DIP side effects than the non-aggressive group, but the association disappeared when level of psychopathology was controlled for. The aggressive group had more severe akathisia than the non-aggressive group, but the difference was not statistically significant. The two groups did not suffer in the severity of tardive dyskinesia. There was no significant, independent effect of extrapyramidal symptoms on aggressive behaviour in our sample of schizophrenic patients.

Fifty-one feminist women responded to an open-ended questionnaire which asked participants to identify the qualities they associate with the psychologically fully functioning woman. Analysis of responses revealed that the fully functioning woman is seen as possessing a balance between independence and interdependence by this particular group of respondents. We argue that the development of feminist-based definitions is desirable and necessary for advancing a feminist agenda and for facilitating feminist therapy, and that the use of subjective reports of different groups of feminists can be an invaluable aid in this process.

Tuberculosis (TB) was once a formidable public health hazard but is now less feared because of the development of an armamentarium of effective drugs. The incidence of TB had been declining for decades until recently when the number of cases of TB began to rise. The most obvious reasons for this trend were the rising rate of human immunodeficiency virus infection and the development of multiple drug–resistant TB. The largest percentage increase in TB cases occurred among persons 25 to 44 years of age; many of them are women. A number of these women will first be diagnosed with TB infection during pregnancy. It is important for the clinician to be aware of the impact of TB on this population. Patients must be screened as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because it is important to quickly diagnose TB. Prompt and effective therapy will benefit the mother and the neonate. This article reviews the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment regimens of TB in pregnancy, as well as the effects on the HIV patient, the neonate, and breastfeeding. Prompt recognition and treatment of TB infection will ensure that the rates of TB cases decline.

Of 73 patients who met selection criteria to enter into a study on aggressive behaviour in schizophrenia, 11 patients (15.1%) did not participate. The participants and non-participants were similar in age, gender ratio and proportion who had aggressive behaviour. The participants, however, had a longer duration of illness, a longer duration of current admission, were more likely to suffer from residual schizophrenia, but less likely to suffer from disorganized schizophrenia and were less severely ill than the non-participants. These results indicate the need, in studies of aggressive behaviour in schizophrenia, to consider non-response bias as a confounding variable.

The objective of this article was to elucidate the relative importance of state vs. trait factors in determining aggressive behaviour in schizophrenia. Thirty-one aggressive schizophrenia patients in rehabilitation wards were compared with 31 matched non-aggressive patients with respect to their psychopathology, phenomenologies of hallucinations and delusions, neuroleptic motor side effects, history of aggression and personality traits. Significant differences between the two groups were found in relation to psychopathology, affective responses to hallucinations/delusions, history of aggression and personality traits, but there were no significant differences regarding neuroleptic motor side effects. The effects of history of aggression as well as personality traits were independent of and similar to the total level of psychopathology, but were much smaller when compared to those of negative affective responses to hallucinations/delusions.

Objective:The aim of this study was to determine the psychopathological correlates of aggressive behaviour in schizophrenia. Method:Thirty-one aggressive patients in rehabilitation wards meeting DSM-III-R criteria for schizophrenia were compared with 31 matched non-aggressive patients in relation to their psychopathology using the Clinical Global Index (CGI), Positive and Negative Symptoms scale (PANSS) and the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale. Results:The aggressive group had significantly higher CGI, positive symptom, negative symptom, general psychopathology and total PANSS scores than the non-aggressive group. The two groups could be distinguished by three sets of symptoms: symptoms with verbal or/and physical aggression as part of their definition; symptoms suggesting frontal lobe impairment; and excitement. The two groups did not differ in their level of depressive symptomatology. Conclusions:The aggressive group were overall more ill than the non-aggressive group, and the former could be distinguished from the latter by certain aspects of their psychopathology.

Objective: The aim of the study was to determine, among patients in rehabilitation wards, the prevalence and nature of aggressive behaviour and the relationship between aggressive behaviour and patient characteristics and ward factors. Method: The aggressive behaviour of all 220 inpatients within the rehabilitation program of a large psychiatric hospital in Victoria was assessed using the Staff Observation Aggression Scale. Results: Physical assaults occurred at a rate of 97.6 per 100 patients per year. About 40% of all incidents appeared to be unprovoked. Most physical incidents involved use of body parts and use of a weapon was uncommon. Aggression was most often directed at a staff member. Serious injury was rare. Aggressive behaviour was correlated with gender and duration of admission for the whole sample; however, there were different correlates of aggressive behaviour for different ward populations and different types of aggression. As for ward variables, time of day but not patient/staffing level was associated with aggressive behaviour. Conclusions: There was a high rate of aggressive behaviour among patients in rehabilitation wards; this should be taken into consideration in the planning of their community placement. The findings also caution against aggregating different ward populations and types of aggressive behaviour for research.
