Colonies of honey bees, Apis mellifera, from two patrilines (cordovan and dark) were established and observations were made on the behaviour shown by the worker bees in rearing queen larvae within their colonies. The relationship among the bees within these colonies was either r = 3/4 (super-sisters) or r = 1/4 (half sisters). The worker bees showed preferential care to the queen larvae that were of their own patriline. Workers of the cordovan patriline showed a stronger preference for larvae of their own patriline than did the dark workers. Cordovan workers also showed a higher rate of visitation, indicating behavioural differences between the patrilines. These results suggest that kin selection is operating on honey bee behaviour used in rearing reproductives.

The authors investigate employer practices toward expatriate managers and how those practices relate to retention-relevant outcomes (e.g., organizational commitment, intent to quit, and intent to return early to a domestic assignment). The psychological contract is investigated as a mediator of this relationship. A model in which the psychological contract mediates the relationship between organizational practices and retention-relevant outcomes is empirically constructed. The authors also refine the construct of the psychological contract and report managers' experiences as expatriates

This article examines the psychological contract and human resource practices as communications relevant to that contract. We argue that employees, at certain times only, systematically analyze their employers' HR practices for meaning vis-ri-vis their psychological contract. Judgments about the adequacy with which their psychological contracts are fulfilled result from such systematic analyses, and these judgments have important effects on employee commitment. Practical implications of our analysis are also discussed.

Male body size (standard length) and prior reproductive experience were tested for their influence on the mate choice of naive female convict cichlid fish, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum . Females showed no preference based on male reproductive experience, but significantly preferred the larger of two males. The possibility that the size dimorphism is a sexually-selected trait in male C. nigrofasciatum is discussed. Individual broods of C. nigrofasciatum were reared and sexually mature animals measured to determine the relationship between sex, age and size. Males of the same age showed sufficient size variation to serve as a basis for female choice. Thus the size variation necessary for selection to operate exists in male C. nigrofasciatum . These data suggest that male body size may be a sexually-selected trait in this monogamous cichlid species.

Experimental colonies of honey bees consisting of two patrilines were observed as they reared worker brood. Seven behavior patterns that relate to brood care were recorded. Worker bees biased the care they provided to eggs and larvae destined to become workers on the basis of brood patrilines. Both patrilineal and antipatrilineal preferences in various behavioral patterns were observed. There was variation among colonies that may have been the result of the frequencies of brood of each patriline and the total amount of brood available to be reared. In addition, there were some differences between workers of the two patrilines in the way that they cared for the two patrilines of brood.
