One of the main drivers of gender inequality is the unequal distribution of paid work between men and women, in particular, after the birth of a child. In this study, we examine how a man’s employment flexibility, specifically his weekly hours of employment and schedule autonomy, influence his female partner’s return to employment after the birth of a first child using the German Socio-Economic Panel. Given women’s placement as primary but not solitary carers of young children, it is plausible that women’s attachment to the labour force will increase if their male partner is in a position to take on more of the responsibility for unpaid work. Results indicate that a father’s employment flexibility facilities a mother’s part-time employment. A return to full-time hours, however, is less contingent on the father’s employment circumstances or other external factors. The findings highlight the importance of employing couple-level analyses in examinations of the gender division of labour.

Objective The chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH)-Drain trial compared recurrence rates and clinical outcome associated with the use of subperiosteal drain (SPD) and subdural drain (SDD) after burr-hole drainage for cSDH. This subgroup analysis aimed to determine whether one drain type is preferable for patients treated with platelet inhibitors (PI) or anticoagulants (AC). Methods This subanalysis included 133 patients treated with PI/AC of the 220 patients from the preceding cSDH-Drain trial. For these patients the association between the drain type used and recurrence rates, mortality, as well as clinical outcome at 6 weeks and 12 months follow-up were analyzed using a logistic regression analysis model. Additionally, recurrence rates, clinical outcome, and mortality were assessed for each PI or AC type separately. Results The insertion of SPD was associated with 7.35% recurrence rates compared to 13.85% with SDD in patients treated with PI or AC (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.06–2.65, P = 0.36). Outcome measurements and mortality did not differ significantly between both groups at 6-week and 12-month follow-up. In addition, there was no statistically significant association between drain type and recurrence rate or mortality when comparing data for each PI or AC type. At 24 hours postoperatively, significantly more patients under phenprocoumon and natrium-dalteparin had a Glasgow Coma Scale score between 13 and 15 in the SDD group compared with the SPD group (P = 0.006), whereaas at 6-week follow-up significantly more patients in the SDD group treated with ASA had a good modified Rankin scale score (P = 0.01). At 12 months, no significant difference in outcome measurements was seen for all PI and AC types. Conclusions In patients treated with PI or AC, the insertion of SPD after burr-hole drainage of cSDH showed comparable recurrence, mortality, and long term outcome rates when compared with SDD.

Objective To know whether motor deficits after tumor surgery are transient is reassuring for the patient and crucial for planning rehabilitation and adjuvant treatment. We analyze the value of postoperative MRI navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) compared to intraoperative MEP monitoring in predicting recovery of motor function. Methods Retrospective series of nTMS mappings within 14 days after surgery for supratentorial tumors (09/2014–05/2018). All patients with motor deficits of Medical-Research-Council-Grade (MRCS) 0–4- were included. Results We performed nTMS mapping on average 3.8 days after surgery and recorded nTMS MEP in 11 of 13 patients. Motor strength recovered to at least MRCS 4 within one month if postoperative nTMS elicited MEPs (positive predictive value 90.9%). If nTMS did not elicit MEPs, the patient did not recover (negative predictive value 100%). Intraoperative MEP and postoperative nTMS were equally predictive for long-term motor recovery. In cases of intraoperative MEP alteration/signal loss, but a positive postoperative nTMS mapping, 2/3 patients demonstrated a good motor recovery. Conclusion nTMS may predict long-term motor recovery of patients suffering from severe motor deficits directly after resection of tumors located in motor eloquent areas. Significance In cases of intraoperative MEP alterations, postoperative nTMS may clarify the potential for motor recovery.

BACKGROUND Intrawound vancomycin powder is an emerging strategy to reduce surgical site infections (SSIs) in spine surgery. However, there are concerns relating to its safety profile and toxicity. Data on systemic uptake of suprafascially administered vancomycin powder following instrumented spinal fusion is lacking. OBJECTIVE To study the systemic uptake and safety of suprafascially administered vancomycin powder in the early postoperative phase following open instrumented posterior spinal fusion. METHODS This was a substudy of an ongoing randomized clinical trial. Eligible adult patients were randomized 1:1 to either receive suprafascial vancomycin powder before wound closure or not to receive vancomycin powder. Serum vancomycin levels were assessed on postoperative days 1 and 2, serum creatinine levels were measured pre- and post-operatively. Adverse events up to 6 wk following surgery were recorded. RESULTS Among 34 randomized patients (mean age 62 yr, range 31-84 yr; 18 [53%] women), 17 received vancomycin powder. No detectable serum vancomycin levels (>4.0 mg/L) were found. Proportion of adverse events per patient in the vancomycin and control group, respectively, were 29.4% (5/17) vs 11.8% (2/17) (OR 3.12; 95% CI, 0.52; 19.38; P = .398). No patient had nephrotoxicity or ototoxicity in either group. CONCLUSION Suprafascial vancomycin powder in open instrumented spinal fusion surgery is safe and results in negligible systemic uptake. Final results of the VANCO Trial need to be awaited for conclusive data on the efficacy of vancomycin for SSI prevention and its impact on wound healing.

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) have been extensively investigated in the Local Group, but their low luminosity and surface brightness make similar work in more distant galaxy groups challenging. Modern instrumentation unlocks the possibility of scrutinizing these faint systems in other environments, expanding the parameter space of group properties. We use MUSE spectroscopy to study the properties of 14 known or suspected dSph satellites of Cen A. Twelve targets are confirmed to be group members based on their radial velocities. Two targets are background galaxies at 50 Mpc: KK 198 is a face-on spiral galaxy, and dw1315-45 is an ultra-diffuse galaxy with an effective radius of 2300 pc. The 12 confirmed dSph members of the Cen A group have old and metal-poor stellar populations and follow the stellar metallicity-luminosity relation defined by the dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. In the three brightest dwarf galaxies (KK 197, KKs 55, and KKs 58), we identify globular clusters, as well as a planetary nebula in KK 197, although its association with this galaxy and/or the extended halo of Cen A is uncertain. Using four discrete tracers, we measure the velocity dispersion and dynamical mass of KK 197. This dSph appears dark matter dominated and lies on the radial acceleration relation of star-forming galaxies within the uncertainties. It also is consistent with predictions stemming from modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). Surprisingly, in the dwarf KK 203 we find an extended Halpha ring. Careful examination of Hubble Space Telescope photometry reveals a very low level of star formation at ages between 30-300 Myr. The Halpha emission is most likely linked to a 40 Myr old supernova remnant, although other possibilities for its origin cannot be entirely ruled out., 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

This study examines internal migration as part of unfolding life courses, scrutinizing stability and change across socio-historical contexts from post-war Germany. We inquire whether the structure of family and labour market life courses intersect with migration experience in early adult ages for men and women born around 1939–41, 1949–51, 1964 and 1971. We then establish how recent changes in the transition to adulthood are reflected in the life courses of internal migrants. We accomplish this using exploratory mining of event histories on retrospective monthly records of life events occurring between ages 16 and 30 from the West German samples of the German Life History Study. Our descriptive analyses reveal that the structure of young adults’ life courses intersects with internal migration experience. Differences in the life courses of movers and stayers have increased across socio-historical periods, and are more apparent in the labour market trajectory than in the family trajectory. Diversity in internal migrants’ trajectories reflect the complex ways in which young adults negotiate life courses, and align with the generalized protraction of school-to-work transitions and the delay of family projects. Our research adds to recent studies that underline the value of situating migration events in the wider biographical and structural contexts. Findings contribute to map in efficient ways the full complexity of individual life courses.

Objective The randomized controlled Chronic Subdural Hematoma (cSDH)-Drain-Trial showed comparable recurrence rates after placing a subperiosteal drain (SPD) or a subdural drain (SDD) for surgically drained cSDH, although SDD was associated with higher rates of infection and iatrogenic brain injury. This subanalysis examines the time to recurrence and possible risk factors for recurrence after burr-hole drainage of cSDH and placement of a SPD compared with a SDD. Methods We included 220 patients from the preceding cSDH-Drain-Trial. Time to recurrence was compared within the 2 groups using a univariate Cox proportional hazards model. Apart from intraoperative brain expansion (iBE), defined by residual hematoma-cavity on computer tomography 24 hours after surgery, other possible pre-, intra- and postoperative risk factors for recurrence were assessed through univariate and multivariate analysis. Results Median time to recurrence was 22.5 days (interquartile range: 9.25–52 days, range: 0–81) showing no difference between the 2 groups. Less iBE (P = 0.019), lower Glasgow Outcome Scale score at discharge (P = 0.007), and lower Glasgow Coma Scale score at 24 hours (P = 0.037) were strongly associated with recurrence on univariate analysis. After multivariate logistic analysis, less iBE (odds ratio: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01; 1.21; P = 0.03) remained the only significant risk factor associated with recurrence. When comparing the risk factors within the 2 groups, less iBE and lower Glasgow Outcome Scale score at release were associated with recurrence only in the SDD group. Conclusions The inserted drain type after burr-hole drainage of cSDH does not seem to influence time to recurrence. SPD may be warranted in routine clinical practice, independent of individual patient, surgical, or hematoma characteristics.

International audience; What do Cepheid stars, Binary Neutron stars, Supernovae explosions and Active Galactic Nuclei have in common? They are all variable objects, although the physical processes and the associated time-scales that govern their variability can be very different (pulsations, collapse, accretion, bursts, … with characteristic time-scales from milliseconds to hundreds of years). Some events can trigger follow-up observations and a fast reaction to those events can be crucial to determining the nature of the object. To better understand the nature of these objects and the mechanism behind the source of variation a multi-wavelength and even multi-messenger approach is often needed. In 2017 for the first time there was a direct detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetic emission from colliding neutron stars. The discovery involved more than 70 ground and space based telescopes and more than 3000 astronomers. GW170817 beyond being of great relevance by its own illustrates at the highest level the need from the Time Domain Astronomy community to transmit events, collect and share information and to coordinate observations. The Virtual Observatory (VO) should match the common needs of the different scientific use cases. In this paper, we give some highlights of the work on enabling Time Domain Astronomy in the VO, and coordinating the international effort in IVOA, part of which has been done within the ASTERICS DADI package. This includes standards for spatial and temporal coverage, and Time Domain data as will be needed for Time Domain Multi-Messenger Astronomy. Other highlights include prototype visualisation tools taking into account the temporal dimension, and tools for fast cross-matching.

Background Antiplatelet therapy in patients with chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) presents significant neurosurgical challenges. Given the lack of guidelines regarding perioperative management with antiplatelet therapy, it is difficult to balance the patient's increased cardiovascular risk and prevalence of cSDH. Objective To better understand the risk and recurrence rates related to resuming low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) by evaluating our patients' resumption of low-dose ASA at various times after burr-hole drainage of the hematoma. Methods In our retrospective study, 140 consecutive patients taking low-dose ASA undergoing surgical evacuation of cSDH were included. Data included baseline characteristics and rates of recurrence, morbidity, and mortality. A multivariate logistic regression model analyzed the association between ASA resumption time and recurrence rates. Results No statistically significant association was observed between early postoperative resumption of low-dose ASA and recurrence of cSDH (odds ratio, 1.01; 95% confidence interval, 1.001-1.022; P = .06). Corresponding odds ratios and risk differences for restarting ASA treatment on postoperative days 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, or 42 were estimated at 1.53 and 5.9%, 1.42 and 5.1%, 1.33 and 4.1%, 1.23 and 3.2%, 1.15 and 2.2%, 1.07 and 1.1%, and 1.01 and 0.2%, respectively (P > .05). Cardiovascular event rates, surgical morbidity, and mortality did not significantly differ between patients with or without ASA therapy. Conclusion Given the few published studies regarding ASA use in cranial neurosurgery, our findings elucidate one issue, showing comparable recurrence rates with early or late resumption of low-dose ASA after burr-hole evacuation of cSDH. OBJECTIVEChronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) occurs more frequently in elderly patients, while older patient age is associated with worse postoperative outcome following burr-hole drainage (BHD) of cSDH. The cSDH-Drain trial showed comparable recurrence rates after BHD and placement of either a subperiosteal drain (SPD) or subdural drain (SDD). Additionally, an SPD showed a significantly lower rate of infections as well as iatrogenic parenchymal injuries through drain misplacement. This post hoc analysis aims to compare recurrence rates and clinical outcomes following BHD of cSDH and the placement of SPDs or SDDs in elderly patients.METHODSThe study included 104 patients (47.3%) 80 years of age and older from the 220 patients recruited in the preceding cSDH-Drain trial. SPDs and SDDs were compared with regard to recurrence rate, morbidity, mortality, and clinical outcome. A post hoc analysis using logistic regression, comparing the outcome measurements for patients < 80 and ≥ 80 years old in a univariate analysis and stratified for drain type, was further completed.RESULTSPatients ≥ 80 years of age treated with an SDD showed higher recurrence rates (12.8%) compared with those treated with an SPD (8.2%), without a significant difference (p = 0.46). Significantly higher drain misplacement rates were observed for patients older than 80 years and treated with an SDD compared with an SPD (0% vs 20%, p = 0.01). Comparing patients older than 80 years to younger patients, significantly higher overall mortality (15.4% vs 5.2%, p = 0.012), 30-day mortality (3.8% vs 0%, p = 0.033), and surgical mortality (2.9% vs 1.7%, p = 0.034) rates were observed. Clinical outcome at the 12-month follow-up was significantly worse for patients ≥ 80 years old, and logistic regression showed a significant association of age with outcome, while drain type had no association with outcome.CONCLUSIONSThe initial findings of the cSDH-Drain trial and the findings of this subanalysis suggest that SPD may be warranted in elderly patients. As opposed to drain type, patient age (> 80 years) was significantly associated with worse outcome, as well as higher morbidity and mortality rates.

Background The use of a subdural drain (SDD) after burr-hole drainage of chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) reduces recurrence at 6 mo. Subperiosteal drains (SPDs) are considered safer, since they are not positioned in direct contact to cortical structures, bridging veins, or hematoma membranes. Objective To investigate whether the recurrence rate after insertion of a SPD is noninferior to the insertion of a more commonly used SDD. Methods Multicenter, prospective, randomized, controlled, noninferiority trial analyzing patients undergoing burr-hole drainage for cSDH aged 18 yr and older. After hematoma evacuation, patients were randomly assigned to receive either a SDD (SDD-group) or a SPD (SPD-group). The primary endpoint was recurrence indicating a reoperation within 12 mo, with a noninferiority margin of 3.5%. Secondary outcomes included clinical and radiological outcome, morbidity and mortality rates, and length of stay. Results Of 220 randomized patients, all were included in the final analysis (120 SPD and 100 SDD). Recurrence rate was lower in the SPD group (8.33%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.28-14.72) than in the SDD group (12.00%, 95% CI 6.66-19.73), with the treatment difference (3.67%, 95% CI -12.6-5.3) not meeting predefined noninferiority criteria. The SPD group showed significantly lower rates of surgical infections (P = .0406) and iatrogenic morbidity through drain placement (P = .0184). Length of stay and mortality rates were comparable in both groups. Conclusion Although the noninferiority criteria were not met, SPD insertion led to lower recurrence rates, fewer surgical infections, and lower drain misplacement rates. These findings suggest that SPD may be warranted in routine clinical practice.

Background: Previous research has shown that fertility is influenced by the family of origin. However, there is only little evidence about intergenerational transmission of fertility expectations in younger birth cohorts. Objective: We investigate if there is a positive relationship between the number of full siblings and expected family size in a young birth cohort in Germany and whether this association can be explained by transmission of socioeconomic status. Methods: We use the fifth wave of the German Family Panel (birth cohort 1991-1993) and estimate multinomial logistic regression models. Results: We find a positive effect of the number of full siblings on expected family size that remains stable when controlling for the socioeconomic status of the parents. The effect is smaller on an expected family size of two children compared to other parities which is compatible with the prevailing two-child norm in Germany. Contrary to our expectations there is no effect of the number of siblings on being uncertain about having children. Conclusions: The family of origin influences fertility expectations in a cohort born in the 1990s in Germany, which cannot be explained by transmission of socioeconomic status. Although it is theoretically plausible, there is no final proof that the relationship is instead due to transmission of family values, as the number of siblings is only a proxy variable for the family values of the parents. Contribution: We verify the results of previous studies for a cohort born in the 1990s in Germany, account for parity differences, and include uncertainty in fertility expectations.

Objective To investigate whether, after the publication of grade I evidence that it reduces recurrence rates, the practice of drain insertion after burr-hole drainage of chronic subdural hematoma has changed. Further, we aimed to document various practice modalities concerning the insertion of a drain adopted by neurosurgeons internationally. Methods We administered a survey to neurosurgeons worldwide with questions relating to the surgical treatment of chronic subdural hematoma, with an emphasis on their practices concerning the use of a drain. Results The preferred surgical technique was burr-hole drainage (89%). Most surgeons prefer to place a drain (80%), whereas in 56% of the cases the reason for not placing a drain was brain expansion after evacuation. Subdural drains are placed by 50% and subperiosteal drains by 27% of the responders, whereas 23% place primarily a subdural drain if possible and otherwise a subperiosteal drain. Three quarters of the responders leave the drain for 48 hours and give prophylactic antibiotic treatment, mostly a single-shot dose intraoperatively (70%). Routine postoperative computed tomography is done by 59% mostly within 24–48 hours after surgery (94%). Adjunct treatment to surgery rarely is used (4%). Conclusions The publication of grade I evidence in favor of drain use influenced positively this practice worldwide. Some surgeons are still reluctant to insert a drain, especially when the subdural space is narrow after drainage of the hematoma. The insertion of a subperiosteal drain could be a good alternative solution. However, its outcome and efficacy must be evaluated in larger studies.

We use spectra from the ALFALFA, GASS and COLD GASS surveys to quantify variations in the mean atomic and molecular gas mass fractions throughout the SFR-M* plane and along the main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies. Although galaxies well below the MS tend to be undetected in the Arecibo and IRAM observations, reliable mean atomic and molecular gas fractions can be obtained through a spectral stacking technique. We find that the position of galaxies in the SFR-M* plane can be explained mostly by their global cold gas reservoirs as observed in the HI line, with in addition systematic variations in the molecular-to-atomic ratio and star formation efficiency. When looking at galaxies within +/-0.4 dex of the MS, we find that as stellar mass increases, both atomic and molecular gas mass fractions decrease, stellar bulges become more prominent, and the mean stellar ages increase. Both star formation efficiency and molecular-to-atomic ratios vary little for massive main sequence galaxies, indicating that the flattening of the MS is due to the global decrease of the cold gas reservoirs of galaxies rather than to bottlenecks in the process of converting cold atomic gas to stars., 9 pages, 6 figures. Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is one of the most frequent neurosurgical conditions affecting elderly people and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The use of a subdural drain (SDD) after burr-hole trepanation for cSDH was proven to reduce recurrence and mortality at 6 months. To date in neurosurgery practice, evidence-based guidelines on whether an SDD or subperiosteal drain (SPD) should be used do not exist. Currently both methods are being practiced depending on the institute and/or the practicing neurosurgeon. Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the reoperation rates after burr-hole trepanation and insertion of an SPD or SDD in patients with cSDH. Methods: This is a prospective, noninferiority, multicenter, randomized controlled trial designed to include 220 patients over the age of 18 years presenting with a symptomatic cSDH verified on cranial computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging who are to undergo surgical evacuation with burr-hole trepanation. After informed consent is obtained, patients are randomly allocated to an SPD or SDD group. The primary endpoint is recurrence indicating a reoperation within 12 months. Results: This research is investigator-initiated and has received ethics approval. Patient recruitment started in April 2013, and we expect all study-related activities to be completed by the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017. Conclusions: To date, evidence-based recommendations concerning the operative treatment of cSDH are sparse. Results of this research are expected to have applications in evidence-based practice for the increasing number of patients suffering from cSDH and possibly lead to more efficient treatment of this disease with fewer postoperative complications. In this paper, we introduce the Local Volume TiNy Titans sample (LV-TNT), which is a part of a larger body of work on interacting dwarf galaxies: TNT (Stierwalt et al. 2015). This LV-TNT sample consists of 10 dwarf galaxy pairs in the Local Universe (< 30 Mpc from Milky Way), which span mass ratios of M_(*,1)/M_(*,2) < 20, projected separations < 100 kpc, and pair member masses of log(M_*/M_Sun) < 9.9. All 10 LV-TNT pairs have resolved synthesis maps of their neutral hydrogen, are located in a range of environments and captured at various interaction stages. This enables us to do a comparative study of the diffuse gas in dwarf-dwarf interactions and disentangle the gas lost due to interactions with halos of massive galaxies, from the gas lost due to mutual interaction between the dwarfs. We find that the neutral gas is extended in the interacting pairs when compared to non-paired analogs, indicating that gas is tidally pre-processed. Additionally, we find that the environment can shape the HI distributions in the form of trailing tails and that the gas is not unbound and lost to the surroundings unless the dwarf pair is residing near a massive galaxy. We conclude that a nearby, massive host galaxy is what ultimately prevents the gas from being reaccreted. Dwarf-dwarf interactions thus represent an important part of the baryon cycle of low mass galaxies, enabling the "parking" of gas at large distances to serve as a continual gas supply channel until accretion by a more massive host., 21 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We show that the mass fraction f_atm = 1.35*MHI/M of neutral atomic gas (HI and He) in isolated local disk galaxies of baryonic mass M is well described by a straightforward stability model for flat exponential disks. In the outer disk parts, where gas at the characteristic dispersion of the warm neutral medium is stable in the sense of Toomre (1964), the disk consists of neutral atomic gas; conversely the inner part where this medium would be Toomre-unstable, is dominated by stars and molecules. Within this model, f_atm only depends on a global stability parameter q=j*sigma/(GM), where j is the baryonic specific angular momentum of the disk and sigma the velocity dispersion of the atomic gas. The analytically derived first-order solution f_atm = min{1,2.5q^1.12} provides a good fit to all plausible rotation curves. This model, with no free parameters, agrees remarkably well (+-0.2 dex) with measurements of f_atm in isolated local disk galaxies, even with galaxies that are extremely HI-rich or HI-poor for their mass. The finding that f_atm increases monotonically with q for pure stability reasons offers a powerful intuitive explanation for the mean variation of f_atm with M: in a cold dark matter universe galaxies are expected to follow j~M^(2/3), which implies the average scaling q~M^(-1/3) and hence f_atm~M^(-0.37), in agreement with observations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Diatoms have continued to attract research interest over a long time. One important reason for this research interest is the amazingly beautiful microstructured and nanostructured patterning of the silica-based diatom cell walls. These materials become increasingly important from the materials science point of view. However, many aspects of diatom cell wall formation and patterning are still not fully understood. The present minireview article summarizes our recent knowledge especially with respect to two major topics related to diatom cell wall formation and patterning: (1) uptake and metabolism of silicon by living diatom cells and (2) understanding of the genetic control of cell wall formation. Analytical techniques as well as recent results concerning these two topics are highlighted in this review.

Biomineralization, which means the formation of inorganic materials by biological processes, currently finds increasing research interest. It involves the synthesis of calcium-based minerals such as bones and teeth in vertebrates, and of shells. Silica biomineralization occurs, for example, in diatoms and silica sponges. Usually, biominerals are made up of amorphous compounds or small microcrystalline domains embedded into an amorphous matrix. Nevertheless, they exhibit very regular shapes and, as in the case of diatoms, intricate nanopatterns of amazing beauty. It is, therefore, commonly assumed that biominerals are formed under the structure-directing influence of templates. However, single molecules are by far too small to direct the formation of the observed shapes and patterns. Instead, supramolecular aggregates are shown to be involved in the formation of templating superstructures relevant in biomineralization. Specific biomolecules were identified in both diatoms and silica sponges, which elegantly combine two indispensable functions: on the one hand, the molecules are capable of inducing silica precipitation from precursor compounds. On the other hand, these molecules are capable of self-assembling into larger, structure-directing template aggregates. Such molecules are the silaffins in the case of diatoms and the silicateins in sponges. Long-chain polyamines of similar composition have meanwhile been discovered in both organisms. The present review is especially devoted to the discussion of the self-assembly behavior of these molecules. Physico-chemical studies on a model compound, poly(allylamine), are discussed in detail in order to elucidate the nature of the interactions responsible for self-assembly of long-chain polyamines and the parameters controlling this process. Numerous biomimetic silica synthesis experiments are discussed and evaluated with respect to the observations made on the aforementioned "natural" biomolecules.

Cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction is in part triggered and maintained by reactive oxygen species. Antioxidants such as probucol have shown positive short-term effects on these cardiac interstitial changes in different experimental models after intraperitoneal administration or after per-oral administration with a long pre-treatment period or in high doses. In this study, the long-term effects on mortality and cardiac remodeling were examined after induction of a large myocardial infarction in a clinical daily-life-like setting. Male Lewis rats were randomized to the study groups. Large anterolateral myocardial infarctions were induced or sham operations performed. The oral treatment was started after 48 h either with probucol or placebo after myocardial infarction and with placebo after sham operation. Induction of large myocardial infarctions led to changes of the left ventricular stiffness constants, a dilatation of the left ventricle and an increased interstitial fibrosis in the remote non-infarcted part. These changes were in tendency, but not significantly, reversed after treatment with probucol. The 6-month survival rates were 53.1% in the group probucol-myocardial infarction, 43.2% in the group placebo-myocardial infarction and 100% in the group after sham operation. There were no significant differences at Kaplan-Meier analysis between the groups after myocardial infarctions. Oral treatment with the antioxidant probucol started after myocardial infarction in a pharmacological dose does not have favourable effects on the long-term mortality in the chronic ischemic heart failure model in the rat.

We introduce xCOLD GASS, a legacy survey providing a census of molecular gas in the local Universe. Building upon the original COLD GASS survey, we present here the full sample of 532 galaxies with CO(1-0) measurements from the IRAM-30m telescope. The sample is mass-selected in the redshift interval $0.0110^9$M$_{\odot}$. The CO(1-0) flux measurements are complemented by observations of the CO(2-1) line with both the IRAM-30m and APEX telescopes, HI observations from Arecibo, and photometry from SDSS, WISE and GALEX. Combining the IRAM and APEX data, we find that the CO(2-1) to CO(1-0) luminosity ratio for integrated measurements is $r_{21}=0.79\pm0.03$, with no systematic variations across the sample. The CO(1-0) luminosity function is constructed and best fit with a Schechter function with parameters {$L_{\mathrm{CO}}^* = (7.77\pm2.11) \times 10^9\,\mathrm{K\,km\,s^{-1}\, pc^{2}}$, $\phi^{*} = (9.84\pm5.41) \times 10^{-4} \, \mathrm{Mpc^{-3}}$ and $\alpha = -1.19\pm0.05$}. With the sample now complete down to stellar masses of $10^9$M$_{\odot}$, we are able to extend our study of gas scaling relations and confirm that both molecular gas fraction and depletion timescale vary with specific star formation rate (or offset from the star-formation main sequence) much more strongly than they depend on stellar mass. Comparing the xCOLD GASS results with outputs from hydrodynamic and semi-analytic models, we highlight the constraining power of cold gas scaling relations on models of galaxy formation., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures. In many European societies a discrepancy between preferences towards children and the realisation of births can be observed. It seems young men and women have fewer children than they would wish. This fertility gap could be a chance for policy to increase birth rates. If hindrances to the realisation of the preferred number of children were identified and reduced, more children might be born (Philipov, 2009).

The current study analyses the impact of occupational activity on the timing of first births in Germany. Empirical evidence on the topic in a country with a standardized education system and a credential labor market is still rather limited, despite several recent studies. Moreover, previous research usually lacks the theoretical explanation of why women working in certain occupations are more likely to give birth. This study aims to close these gaps. Using the German Life History Study, occupations are grouped according to characteristics deduced from theoretical considerations using a cluster analysis. In the next step, exponential rate models are estimated to investigate the effect of the clusters on fertility timing. The estimations reveal an accelerated transition to parenthood for women and men working in occupations with unfavorable working conditions. Individuals thus seem to compensate for dissatisfaction with the job by turning to the family. However, for women these occupational differences can completely be explained by differences in educational level, while the effects remain if we look at men.

The highly siliceous cell walls of diatoms are probably the most outstanding examples of nanostructured materials in nature. Previous in vitro experiments have shown that the biomolecules found in the cell walls of diatoms, namely polyamines and silaffins, are capable of catalysing the formation of silica nanospheres from silicic/oligosilicic acid solutions. In a previous publication, silica precipitation was found to be strictly correlated with a phosphate-induced microscopic phase separation of the polyamines. The present contribution further characterises the phase separation behaviour of polyamines in aqueous solutions. In particular, a pronounced pH-dependence of the average particle diameter is found. It is, furthermore, shown that the ability of phosphate ions to form polyamine aggregates in aqueous solutions cannot be a purely electrostatic effect. Instead, a defined hydrogen-bonded network stabilised by properly balanced electrostatic interactions should be considered. Finally, solid-state 31P NMR studies on phase-separated polyamines, synthetic silica precipitates, and diatom cell walls from the species Coscinodicus granii support the assumption of a phosphate-induced phase separation process taking place during cell wall formation.

Long-chain polyamines extracted from the highly siliceous cell walls of diatoms are known to precipitate silica nanospheres from aqueous, silicic-acid containing solutions at near-neutral pH in vitro. The same is true for synthetic polyamines such as polyallylamine. In the present contribution we show that the microscopic phase separation of polyallylamine in aqueous solution is strictly correlated with the silica precipitation activity of polyallylamine/silicic acid solutions. Multivalent anions such as phosphate or sulfate efficiently induce this microscopic phase separation. At higher anion concentrations, macroscopic phase separation occurs. In contrast to the multivalent phosphate and sulfate ions, the monovalent chloride ions are much less efficient in polyallylamine aggregate formation.

By analysing a sample of galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) to contain more than 2.5 times their expected HI content based on their optical properties, we investigate what drives these HI eXtreme (HIX) galaxies to be so HI-rich. We model the HI kinematics with the Tilted Ring Fitting Code TiRiFiC and compare the observed HIX galaxies to a control sample of galaxies from HIPASS as well as simulated galaxies built with the semi-analytic model Dark Sage. We find that (1) HI discs in HIX galaxies are more likely to be warped and more likely to host HI arms and tails than in the control galaxies, (2) the average HI and average stellar column density of HIX galaxies is comparable to the control sample, (3) HIX galaxies have higher HI and baryonic specific angular momenta than control galaxies, (4) most HIX galaxies live in higher-spin haloes than most control galaxies. These results suggest that HIX galaxies are HI-rich because they can support more HI against gravitational instability due to their high specific angular momentum. The majority of the HIX galaxies inherits their high specific angular momentum from their halo. The HI content of HIX galaxies might be further increased by gas-rich minor mergers.
