JASMINE is a Japanese planned space mission that aims to reveal the formation history of our Galaxy and discover habitable exoEarths. For these objectives, the JASMINE satellite performs high-precision astrometric observations of the Galactic bulge and high-precision transit monitoring of M-dwarfs in the near-infrared (1.0-1.6 microns in wavelength). For feasibility studies, we develop an image simulation software named JASMINE-imagesim, which produces realistic observation images. This software takes into account various factors such as the optical point spread function (PSF), telescope jitter caused by the satellite's attitude control error (ACE), detector flat patterns, exposure timing differences between detector pixels, and various noise factors. As an example, we report a simulation for the feasibility study of astrometric observations using JASMINE-imagesim. The simulation confirms that the required position measurement accuracy of 4 mas for a single exposure of 12.5-mag objects is achievable if the telescope pointing jitter uniformly dilutes the PSF across all stars in the field of view. On the other hand, the simulation also demonstrates that the combination of realistic pointing jitter and exposure timing differences in the detector can significantly degrade accuracy and prevent achieving the requirement. This means that certain countermeasures against this issue must be developed. Japan Astrometry Satellite Mission for INfrared Exploration (JASMINE) is a planned M-class science space mission by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. JASMINE has two main science goals. One is the Galactic archaeology with Galactic Center Survey, which aims to reveal the Milky Way's central core structure and formation history from Gaia-level (~25 $\mu$as) astrometry in the Near-Infrared (NIR) Hw-band (1.0-1.6 $\mu$m). The other is the Exoplanet Survey, which aims to discover transiting Earth-like exoplanets in the habitable zone from NIR time-series photometry of M dwarfs when the Galactic center is not accessible. We introduce the mission, review many science objectives, and present the instrument concept. JASMINE will be the first dedicated NIR astrometry space mission and provide precise astrometric information of the stars in the Galactic center, taking advantage of the significantly lower extinction in the NIR. The precise astrometry is obtained by taking many short-exposure images. Hence, the JASMINE Galactic center survey data will be valuable for studies of exoplanet transits, asteroseismology, variable stars and microlensing studies, including discovery of (intermediate mass) black holes. This paper demonstrates a cryogenic deformable mirror (DM) with 1,020 actuators based on micro-electrical mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. Cryogenic space-borne infrared telescopes can experience a wavefront error due to a figure error of their mirror surface, which makes the imaging performance worse. For on-orbit wavefront correction as one solution, we developed a MEMS-processed electro-static DM with a special surrounding structure for use under the cryogenic temperature. We conducted a laboratory demonstration of its operation in three cooling cycles between 5 K and 295 K. Using a laser interferometer, we detected the deformation corresponding to the applied voltages under the cryogenic temperature for the first time. The relationship between voltages and displacements was qualitatively expressed by the quadratic function, which is assumed based on the principle of electro-static DMs. We also found that it had a high operating repeatability of a few nm RMS and no significant hysteresis. Using the measured values of repeatability, we simulated the improvement of PSF by wavefront correction with our DM. These results show that our developed DM is effective in improving imaging performance and PSF contrast of space-borne infrared telescopes., Comment: 29 pages, 23 figures

We propose an all-silicon multi-layer interference filter composed solely of silicon with sub-wavelength structure (SWS) in order to realize high performance optical filters operating in the THz frequency region with robustness against cryogenic thermal cycling and mechanical damage. We demonstrate fabrication of a three-layer prototype using well-established common micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technologies as a first step toward developing practical filters. The measured transmittance of the three-layer filter agrees well with the theoretical transmittances calculated by a simple thin-film calculation with effective refractive indices as well as a rigorous coupled-wave analysis simulation. We experimentally show that SWS layers can work as homogeneous thin-film interference layers with effective refractive indices even if there are multiple SWS layers in a filter., Comment: Accepted for publication in J Infrared Milli Terahz Waves. Investigations of the point spread functions (PSFs) and flux calibrations for stacking analysis have been performed with the far-infrared (wavelengths range of 60 to 140 um all-sky maps taken by the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard the AKARI satellite. The PSFs are investigated by stacking the maps at the positions of standard stars with their fluxes of 0.02 -10 Jy. The derived full widths at the half maximum (FWHMs) of the PSFs are ~ 60 arcsec at 65 and 90 um and ~ 90 arcsec at 140 um, which are much smaller than that of the previous all-sky maps obtained with IRAS (~ 6 arcmin). Any flux dependence in the PSFs is not seen on the investigated flux range. By performing the flux calibrations, we found that absolute photometry for faint sources can be carried out with constant calibration factors, which range from 0.6 to 0.8. After applying the calibration factors, the photometric accuracies for the stacked sources in the 65, 90, and 140 um bands are 9, 3, and 21 %, respectively, even below the detection limits of the survey. Any systematic dependence between the observed flux and model flux is not found. Context. Little is known about the properties of the warm (Tdust >~ 150 K) debris disk material located close to the central star, which has a more direct link to the formation of terrestrial planets than the low temperature debris dust that has been detected to date. Aims. To discover new warm debris disk candidates that show large 18 micron excess and estimate the fraction of stars with excess based on the AKARI/IRC Mid-Infrared All-Sky Survey data. Methods. We have searched for point sources detected in the AKARI/IRC All-Sky Survey, which show a positional match with A-M dwarf stars in the Tycho-2 Spectral Type Catalogue and exhibit excess emission at 18 micron compared to that expected from the Ks magnitude in the 2MASS catalogue. Results. We find 24 warm debris candidates including 8 new candidates among A-K stars. The apparent debris disk frequency is estimated to be 2.8 +/- 0.6%. We also find that A stars and solar-type FGK stars have different characteristics of the inner component of the identified debris disk candidates --- while debris disks around A stars are cooler and consistent with steady-state evolutionary model of debris disks, those around FGK stars tend to be warmer and cannot be explained by the steady-state model., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report Herschel and AKARI photometric observations at far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths of the debris disk around the F3V star HD 15407A, in which the presence of an extremely large amount of warm dust (~500-600 K) has been suggested by mid-infrared (MIR) photometry and spectroscopy. The observed flux densities of the debris disk at 60-160 micron are clearly above the photospheric level of the star, suggesting excess emission at FIR as well as at MIR wavelengths previously reported. The observed FIR excess emission is consistent with the continuum level extrapolated from the MIR excess, suggesting that it originates in the inner warm debris dust and cold dust (~50-130 K) is absent in the outer region of the disk. The absence of cold dust does not support a late heavy bombardment-like event as an origin of the large amount of warm debris dust around HD 15047A., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present the characterization and calibration of the slow-scan observation mode of the Infrared Camera (IRC) on-board AKARI. The IRC slow-scan observations were operated at the S9W (9 $\mu$m) and L18W (18 $\mu$m) bands. We have developed a toolkit for data reduction of the IRC slow-scan observations. We introduced a "self-pointing reconstruction" method to improve the positional accuracy to as good as 1". The sizes of the point spread functions were derived to be $\sim6"$ at the S9W band and $\sim7"$ at the L18W bands in full width at half maximum. The flux calibrations were achieved with the observations of 3 and 4 infrared standard stars at the S9W and L18W bands, respectively. We report an intriguing debris disk towards the F3V star HD 15407A, in which an extremely large amount of warm fine dust (~ 10^(-7) M_Earth) is detected. The dust temperature is derived as ~ 500-600 K and the location of the debris dust is estimated as 0.6-1.0 AU from the central star, a terrestrial planet region. The fractional luminosity of the debris disk is ~ 0.005, which is much larger than those predicted by steady-state models of the debris disk produced by planetesimal collisions. The mid-infrared spectrum obtained by Spitzer indicates the presence of abundant micron-sized silica dust, suggesting that the dust comes from the surface layer of differentiated large rocky bodies and might be trapped around the star., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the results of an unbiased asteroid survey in the mid-infrared wavelength with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI. About 20% of the point source events recorded in the AKARI All-Sky Survey observations are not used for the IRC Point Source Catalog (IRC-PSC) in its production process because of the lack of multiple detection by position. Asteroids, which are moving objects on the celestial sphere, remain in these "residual events". We identify asteroids out of the residual events by matching them with the positions of known asteroids. For the identified asteroids, we calculate the size and albedo based on the Standard Thermal Model. Finally we have a brand-new catalog of asteroids, named the Asteroid Catalog Using Akari (AcuA), which contains 5,120 objects, about twice as many as the IRAS asteroid catalog. The catalog objects comprise 4,953 main belt asteroids, 58 near Earth asteroids, and 109 Jovian Trojan asteroids. We present mid-infrared narrow-band images of the Orion BN/KL region, and N-band low-resolution spectra of IRc2 and the nearby radio source "I." The distributions of the silicate absorption strength and the color temperature have been revealed with a sub-arcsecond resolution. The detailed structure of the 7.8 micron/12.4 micron color temperature distribution was resolved in the vicinity of IRc2. A mid-infrared counterpart to source I has been detected as a large color temperature peak. The color temperature distribution shows an increasing gradient from IRc2 toward source I, and no dominant temperature peak is seen at IRc2. The spectral energy distribution of IRc2 could be fitted by a two-temperature component model, and the "warmer component" of the infrared emission from IRc2 could be reproduced by scattering of radiation from source I. IRc2 itself is not self-luminous, but is illuminated and heated by an embedded luminous young stellar object located at source I., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. We evaluate the effects of high-energy ionizing particles on the Si:As impurity band conduction (IBC) mid-infrared detector on board AKARI, the Japanese infrared astronomical satellite. IBC-type detectors are known to be little influenced by ionizing radiation. However we find that the detector is significantly affected by in-orbit ionizing radiation even after spikes induced by ionizing particles are removed. The effects are described as changes mostly in the offset of detector output, but not in the gain. We conclude that the changes in the offset are caused mainly by increase in dark current. We establish a method to correct these ionizing radiation effects. Aims: We search new T Tauri star (TTS) candidates with the mid-infrared (MIR) part of the AKARI All-Sky Survey at 9 and 18 um wavelengths. Methods: We used the point source catalogue (PSC), obtained by the Infrared Camera (IRC) on board AKARI. We combined the 2MASS PSC and the 3rd version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalogue (UCAC) with the AKARI IRC-PSC, and surveyed 517 known TTSs over a 1800-square-degree part of the Taurus-Auriga region to find criteria to extract TTSs. We considered asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, post-AGB stars, Planetary Nebulae (PNe), and galaxies, which have similar MIR colours, to separate TTSs from these sources. Results: Of the 517 known TTSs, we detected 133 sources with AKARI. Based on the colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams made from the AKARI, 2MASS, and UCAC surveys, we propose the criteria to extract TTS candidates from the AKARI All-Sky data. On the basis of our criteria, we selected 176/14725 AKARI sources as TTS candidates which are located around the Taurus-Auriga region. Comparing these sources with SIMBAD, there are 148 previously identified sources including 115 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), and 28 unidentified sources. Conclusions: Based on SIMBAD identifications, we take the TTS-identification probability using our criteria to be ~75 %. We find 28 TTS candidates, of which we expect 21 to be confirmed once follow-up observations can be obtained. Although the probability of ~75 % is not so high, it is affected by the completeness of the SIMBAD database, and we can search for TTSs over the whole sky, over all star forming regions., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph spectrum of the main-sequence star HD165014, which is a warm (>~ 200 K) debris disk candidate discovered by the AKARI All-Sky Survey. The star possesses extremely large excess emission at wavelengths longer than 5 \mum. The detected flux densities at 10 and 20 \mum are ~ 10 and ~ 30 times larger than the predicted photospheric emission, respectively. The excess emission is attributable to the presence of circumstellar warm dust. The dust temperature is estimated as 300-750 K, corresponding to the distance of 0.7-4.4 AU from the central star. Significant fine-structured features are seen in the spectrum and the peak positions are in good agreement with those of crystalline enstatite. Features of crystalline forsterite are not significantly seen. HD165014 is the first debris disk sample that has enstatite as a dominant form of crystalline silicate rather than forsterite. Possible formation of enstatite dust from differentiated parent bodies is suggested according to the solar system analog. Context : AKARI is the first Japanese astronomical satellite dedicated to infrar ed astronomy. One of the main purposes of AKARI is the all-sky survey performed with six infrared bands between 9 and 200um during the period from 2006 May 6 to 2007 August 28. In this paper, we present the mid-infrared part (9um and 18um b ands) of the survey carried out with one of the on-board instruments, the Infrar ed Camera (IRC). Aims : We present unprecedented observational results of the 9 and 18um AKARI al l-sky survey and detail the operation and data processing leading to the point s ource detection and measurements. Methods : The raw data are processed to produce small images for every scan and point sources candidates, above the 5-sigma noise level per single scan, are der ived. The celestial coordinates and fluxes of the events are determined statisti cally and the reliability of their detections is secured through multiple detect ions of the same source within milli-seconds, hours, and months from each other. Results : The sky coverage is more than 90% for both bands. A total of 877,091 s ources (851,189 for 9um, 195,893 for 18um) are confirmed and included in the cur rent release of the point source catalogue. The detection limit for point source s is 50mJy and 90mJy for the 9um and 18um bands, respectively. The position accu racy is estimated to be better than 2". Uncertainties in the in-flight absolute flux calibration are estimated to be 3% for the 9um band and 4% for the 18um ban d. The coordinates and fluxes of detected sources in this survey are also compar ed with those of the IRAS survey and found to be statistically consistent., Comment: Accepted for publication in AandA AKARI special issue

The SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) is a proposed mid-to-far infrared (4-200 um) astronomy mission, scheduled for launch in 2017. A single, 3.5m aperture telescope would provide superior image quality at 5-200 um, and its very cold (~5 K) instrumentation would provide superior sensitivity in the 25-200 um wavelength regimes. This would provide a breakthrough opportunity for studies of exoplanets, protoplanetary and debris disk, and small solar system bodies. We investigate the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and identify the location of possible embedded excitation sources from far-infrared (FIR) line and mid-infrared continuum emission maps. We carried out imaging spectroscopic observations of four giant Galactic star-forming regions with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) onboard AKARI. We obtained [OIII] 88 micron and [CII] 158 micron line intensity maps of all the regions: G3.270-0.101, G333.6-0.2, NGC3603, and M17. For G3.270-0.101, we obtained high-spatial-resolution [OIII] 88 micron line-emission maps and a FIR continuum map for the first time, which imply that [OIII] 88 micron emission identifies the excitation sources more clearly than the radio continuum emission. In G333.6-0.2, we found a local [OIII] 88 micron emission peak, which is indicative of an excitation source. This is supported by the 18 micron continuum emission, which is considered to trace the hot dust distribution. For all regions, the [CII] 158 micron emission is distributed widely as suggested by previous observations of star-forming regions. We conclude that [OIII] 88 micron emission traces the excitation sources more accurately than the radio continuum emission, especially where there is a high density and/or column density gradient. We made mid-infrared observations of the 10Msun Herbig Be star HD200775 with the Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) on the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. We discovered diffuse emission of an elliptical shape extended in the north-south direction inabout 1000AU radius around unresolved excess emission. The diffuse emission is perpendicular to the cavity wall formed by the past outflow activity and is parallel to the projected major axis of the central close binary orbit. The centers of the ellipse contours of the diffuse emission are shifted from the stellar position and the amount of the shift increases as the contour brightness level decreases. The diffuse emission is well explained in all of geometry, size, and configuration by an inclined flared disk where only its surface emits the mid-infrared photons. Our results give the first well-resolved infrared disk images around a massive star and strongly support that HD200775 is formed through the disk accretion. The disk survives the main accretion phase and shows a structure similar to that around lower-mass stars with 'disk atmosphere'. At the same time, the disk also shows properties characteristic to massive stars such as photoevaporation traced by the 3.4mm free-free emission and unusual silicate emission with a peak at 9.2micron, which is shorter than that of many astronomical objects. We present mid-infrared imaging at 11.7 $\mu$m for the quadruple lens systems, MG0414+0534 and Q2237+030, using the cooled mid-infrared camera and spectrometer (COMICS) attached on the Subaru telescope. MG0414+0534 is characterized by a bright pair of lensed images (A1, A2) and their optical flux ratio A2/A1 deviates significantly from the prediction of a smooth lens model. Q2237+030 is comprised of four lensed images, which are significantly affected by microlensing in a foreground lensing galaxy. Our mid-infrared observations of these lensed images have revealed that the mid-infrared flux ratio for A2/A1 of MG0414+0534 is nearly unity (0.90 +- 0.04). We find that this flux ratio is systematically small, at 4 to 5 sigma level, compared with the prediction of a best smooth lens model (1.09) represented by a singular isothermal ellipsoid and external shear, thereby suggesting the presence of substructures to explain our observational result. In contrast, for Q2237+030, our high signal-to-noise observation indicates that the mid-infrared flux ratios between all the four images of Q2237+030 are virtually consistent with the prediction of a smooth lens model. Based on the size estimate of the dust torus surrounding the nuclei of these QSOs, we set limits on the mass of a substructure in these lens systems, which can cause anomalies in the flux ratios. For MG0414+0534, since the required mass of a substructure inside its Einstein radius is > 360 M_sun, millilensing by a CDM substructure is most likely. If it is modeled as a singular isothermal sphere, the mass inside radius of 100 pc is given as > 1.0x10^5 M_sun. For Q2237+030, there is no significant evidence of millilensing, so the reported anomalous flux ratios in shorter wavelengths are entirely caused by microlensing by stars (abridged)., Comment: 10 pages, To appear in the Astrophysical Journal

Photometry of the A0 V main-sequence star HD 106797 with AKARI and Gemini/T-ReCS is used to detect excess emission over the expected stellar photospheric emission between 10 and 20 micron, which is best attributed to hot circumstellar debris dust surrounding the star. The temperature of the debris dust is derived as Td ~ 190 K by assuming that the excess emission is approximated by a single temperature blackbody. The derived temperature suggests that the inner radius of the debris disk is ~ 14 AU. The fractional luminosity of the debris disk is 1000 times brighter than that of our own zodiacal cloud. The existence of such a large amount of hot dust around HD 106797 cannot be accounted for by a simple model of the steady state evolution of a debris disk due to collisions, and it is likely that transient events play a significant role. Our data also show a narrow spectral feature between 11 and 12 micron attributable to crystalline silicates, suggesting that dust heating has occurred during the formation and evolution of the debris disk of HD 106797., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters, 8 pages, 2 figures

To set useful limits on the abundance of small-scale dark matter halos (subhalos) in a galaxy scale, we have carried out mid-infrared imaging and integral-field spectroscopy for a sample of quadruple lens systems showing anomalous flux ratios. These observations using Subaru have been successful for distinguishing millilensing by subhalos from microlensing by stars. The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of the two instruments on board the AKARI satellite. In addition to deep imaging from 1.8-26.5um for the pointed observation mode of the AKARI, it has a spectroscopic capability in its spectral range. By replacing the imaging filters by transmission-type dispersers on the filter wheels, it provides low-resolution (lambda/d_lambda ~ 20-120) spectroscopy with slits or in a wide imaging field-of-view (approximately 10'X10'). The IRC spectroscopic mode is unique in space infrared missions in that it has the capability to perform sensitive wide-field spectroscopic surveys in the near- and mid-infrared wavelength ranges. We present the results of optical identifications for 257 mid-infrared sources detected with a deep 15um survey over approximately 80 arcmin^2 area in the AKARI performance verification field near the North Ecliptic Pole. The 15um fluxes of the sources range from 1 mJy down to 40 uJy, approximately a half of which are below 100 uJy. Optical counterparts were searched for within a 2-3 arcsec radius in both the BVRi'z' catalog generated by using the deep Subaru/Suprime-cam field which covers one-third of the performance verification field, and the g'r'i'z' catalog based on observations made with MegaCam at CFHT. We found B-R and R-z' colours of sources with successful optical identifications are systematically redder than that of the entire optical sample in the same field. Moreover, approximately 40% of the 15um sources show colours R-L15>5, which cannot be explained by the spectral energy distribution (SED) of normal quiescent spiral galaxies, but are consistent with SEDs of redshifted (z>1) starburst or ultraluminous infrared galaxies. This result indicates that the fraction of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies in our faint 15um sample is much larger than that in our brighter 15um sources, which is consistent with the evolving mid-infrared luminosity function derived by recent studies based on the Spitzer 24um deep surveys. Based on an SED fitting technique, the nature of the faint 15um sources is further discussed for a selected number of sources with available K_s-band data.

We report the first results of a near- and mid- infrared deep survey with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI in the performance verification phase. Simultaneous observations by the NIR, MIR-S and MIR-L channels of the IRC with effective integration times of 4529, 4908, and 4417 seconds at 3, 7, and 15 micron, covering 86.0, 70.3, and 77.3 arcmin^2 area, detected 955, 298 and 277 sources, respectively. The 5 sigma detection limits of the survey are 6.0, 31.5 and 71.2 micro Jy and the 50% completeness limit are 24.0, 47.5, and 88.1 micro Jy at 3, 7, and 15 micron, respectively. The observation is limited by source confusion at 3 micron. We have confirmed the turnover in the 15 micron differential source counts around 400 micro Jy, previously detected by surveys with the Infrared Space Observatory. The faint end of 15 micron raw source counts agree with the results from the deep surveys in the GOODS fields carried out with the Spitzer IRS peak up imager and the predictions of current galaxy evolution models. These results indicate that deep surveys with comprehensive wavelength coverage at mid-infrared wavelength are very important to investigate the evolution of infrared galaxies at high redshifts., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, and 5 tables. We present the observations of the reflection nebulae IC4954 and IC4955 region with the Infrared Camera (IRC) and the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) on board the infrared astronomical satellite AKARI during its performance verification phase. We obtained 7 band images from 7 to 160um with higher spatial resolution and higher sensitivities than previous observations. The mid-infrared color of the S9W (9um) and L18W (18um) bands shows a systematic variation around the exciting sources. The spatial variation in the mid-infrared color suggests that the star-formation in IC4954/4955 is progressing from south-west to north-east. The FIS data also clearly resolve two nebulae for the first time in the far-infrared. The FIS 4-band data from 65um to 160um allow us to correctly estimate the total infrared luminosity from the region, which is about one sixth of the energy emitted from the existing stellar sources. Five candidates for young stellar objects have been detected as point sources for the first time in the 11um image. They are located in the red S9W to L18W color regions, suggesting that current star-formation has been triggered by previous star-formation activities. A wide area map of the size of about 1 x 1 (deg^2) around the IC4954/4955 region was created from the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey data. Together with the HI 21cm data, it suggests a large hollow structure of a degree scale, on whose edge the IC4954/4955 region has been created, indicating star formation over three generations in largely different spatial scales., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ AKARI special issue

We report the detection of an H-alpha emission line in the low resolution spectrum of a quasar, RX J1759.4+6638, at a redshift of 4.3 with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) onboard the AKARI. This is the first spectroscopic detection of an H-alpha emission line in a quasar beyond z=4. The overall spectral energy distribution (SED) of RX J1759.4+6638 in the near- and mid-infrared wavelengths agrees with a median SED of the nearby quasars and the flux ratio of F(Ly-alpha)/F(H-alpha) is consistent with those of previous reports for lower-redshift quasars., Comment: 9pages, 3 figures, Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, in press

We report preliminary results of AKARI observations of two globular clusters, NGC104 and NGC362. Imaging data covering areas of about 10x10 arcmin^2 centered on the two clusters have been obtained with InfraRed Camera (IRC) at 2.4, 3.2, 4.1, 7.0, 9.0, 11.0, 15.0, 18.0 and 24.0 mu. We used F11/F2 and F24/F7 flux ratios as diagnostics of circumstellar dust emission. Dust emissions are mainly detected from variable stars obviously on the asymptotic giant branch, but some variable stars that reside below the tip of the first-ascending giant branch also show dust emissions. We found eight red sources with F24/F7 ratio greater than unity in NGC362. Six out of the eight have no 2MASS counterparts. We present the properties of 11 $\mu$m selected sources detected in the early data of the North Ecliptic Pole Deep (NEP-Deep) Survey of AKARI. The data set covers 6 wavelength bands from 2.5 to 11 $\mu$m, with the exposure time of 10 ~ 20 minutes. This field lies within the CFHT survey with four filter bands ($g', r', i',z'), enabling us to establish nearly continuous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for wavelengths ranging from 0.4 to 11 $\mu$m. The main sample studied here consists of 71 sources whose 11 $\mu$m AB magnitudes are equal to or brighter than 18.5 (251 $\mu$Jy), which is complete to more than 90%. The 11 $\mu$m band has an advantage of sampling star forming galaxies with low to medium redshifts since the prominent PAH feature shifts into this band. As expected, we find that the majority (~68%) of 11 $\mu$m bright sources are star forming galaxies at 0.2 < z < 0.7 with $L_{IR} ~ 10^{10}$ -- $10^{12} L_{\odot}$ based on the detailed modelling of SEDs. We also find four AGNs lying at various redshifts in the main sample. In addition, we discuss a few sources which have non-typical SEDs of the main sample, including a brown dwarf candidate, a steep power-law source, flat spectrum object, and an early-type galaxy at moderate redshift., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Mid-infrared (MIR) images of the Herbig Ae star HD 142527 were obtained at 18.8 and 24.5 micron with the Subaru/COMICS. Bright extended arc-like emission (outer disk) is recognized at r=0.85" together with a strong central source (inner disk) and a gap around r=0.6" in the both images. Thermal emission of the eastern side is much brighter than that of the western side in the MIR. We estimate the dust size as a few micron from the observed color of the extended emission and the distance from the star. The dust temperature T and the optical depth tau of the MIR emitting dust are also derived from the two images as T=82+/-1K, tau=0.052+/-0.001 for the eastern side and T=85+/-3K, tau=0.018+/-0.001 for the western side. The observed asymmetry in the brightness can be attributed to the difference in the optical depth of the MIR emitting dust. To account for the present observations, we propose an inclined disk model, in which the outer disk is inclined along the east-west direction with the eastern side being in the far side and the inner rim of the outer disk in the eatern side is exposed directly to us. The proposed model can successfully account for the MIR observations as well as near-infrared (NIR) images of the scattering light, in which the asymmetry is seen in the opposite sense and the forward scattering light (near side -- western side) is brighter., Comment: 5 figures, published in ApJ Letters

We present the results of mid-infrared N-band spectroscopy of the Herbig Ae/Be system MWC1080 using the Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) on board the 8m Subaru Telescope. The MWC1080 has a geometry such that the diffuse nebulous structures surround the central Herbig B0 type star. We focus on the properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and PAH-like species, which are thought to be the carriers of the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands in such environments. A series of UIR bands at 8.6, 11.0, 11.2, and 12.7um is detected throughout the system and we find a clear increase in the UIR 11.0um/11.2um ratio in the vicinity of the central star. Since the UIR 11.0um feature is attributed to a solo-CH out-of-plane wagging mode of cationic PAHs while the UIR 11.2um feature to a solo-CH out-of-plane bending mode of neutral PAHs, the large 11.0um/11.2um ratio directly indicates a promotion of the ionization of PAHs near the central star., Comment: accepted for publication in Advances in Geoscience

We present mid-infrared imaging at 11.7 mu m for the quadruple lens systems, PG1115+080 and B1422+231, using the cooled mid-infrared camera and spectrometer (COMICS) attached on the Subaru telescope. These lensed QSOs are characterized by their anomalous optical and radio flux ratios as obtained for (A1, A2) images of PG1115+080 and (A, B, C) images of B1422+231, respectively, i.e., such flux ratios are hardly reproduced by lens models with smooth mass distribution. Our mid-infrared observations for these images have revealed that the mid-infrared flux ratio A2/A1 of PG1115+080 is virtually consistent with smooth lens models (but inconsistent with the optical flux ratio), whereas for B1422+231, the mid-infrared flux ratios among (A, B, C) are in good agreement with the radio flux ratios. We also identify a clear infrared bump in the spectral energy distributions of these QSOs, thereby indicating that the observed mid-infrared fluxes originate from a hot dust torus around a QSO nucleus. Based on the size estimate of the dust torus, we place limits on the mass of a substructure in these lens systems, causing the anomalous optical or radio flux ratios. For PG1115+080, the mass of a substructure inside an Einstein radius, M_E, is < 16 Msun, corresponding to either a star or a low-mass CDM subhalo having the mass of M_{100}^{SIS} < 2.2 * 10^4 Msun inside radius of 100 pc if modeled as a singular isothermal sphere (SIS). For B1422+231, we obtain M_E > 209 Msun, indicating that a CDM subhalo is more likely, having the mass of M_{100}^{SIS} > 7.4 * 10^4 Msun, Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, ApJ in press

We have observed the 8-13 $\mu$m spectrum (R$\sim$250) of the Vega-like star candidate HD145263 using Subaru/COMICS. The spectrum of HD145263 shows the broad trapezoidal silicate feature with the shoulders at 9.3 $\mu$m and 11.44 $\mu$m, indicating the presence of crystalline silicate grains. This detection implies that crystalline silicate may also be commonly present around Vega-like stars. The 11.44 $\mu$m feature is slightly shifted to a longer wavelength compared to the usual 11.2-3 $\mu$m crystalline forsterite feature detected toward Herbig Ae/Be stars and T Tauri stars. Although the peak shift due to the effects of the grain size can not be ruled out, we suggest that Fe-bearing crystalline olivine explains the observed peak wavelength fairly well. Fe-bearing silicates are commonly found in meteorites and most interplanetary dust particles, which originate from planetesimal-like asteroids. According to studies of meteorites, Fe-bearing silicate must have been formed in asteroidal planetesimals, supporting the scenario that dust grains around Vega-like stars are of planetesimal origin, if the observed 11.44 $\mu$m peak is due to Fe-bearing silicates., Comment: accepted for Publication in ApJL

We have carried out mid-infrared N-band spectroscopic observations of the T Tauri star Hen 3-600A in the TW Hydra association with the COMICS on the 8.2m Subaru Telescope and found structured features in its spectrum. These structured features are well explained by a combination of crystalline forsterite, crystalline enstatite, silica and glassy olivine grains. Among intermediate-mass young stellar objects (YSOs), crystalline silicates have already been detected, but no firm detection has been reported so far for low-mass YSOs such as T Tauri stars. This is the first clear detection of crystalline silicates in low-mass YSOs and shows that the crystallization event occurs even in the protoplanetary disk of low-mass YSOs in the T Tauri phase. The physical processes leading to the inferred dust composition in the Hen3-600A system may be analogous to those occured in the early epoch of the Solar system., Comment: 13 pages,3 figures,1 table, ApJ Letter accepted
