Abstract

Combined NO2 and CO2 observations have the potential to constrain the identification of the locations and strength of urban CO2 emissions, in particular, point sources such as power plants. We report the first results of airborne spectroscopic NO2 and CO2 observations over an urban area in Japan in February 2018. Inversed emission rates of two stacks of the coal‐fired power plant for CO2 showed relatively good agreement with those estimated by a bottom‐up inventory—the Regional Emission inventory in ASia (REAS) v3.1—within −7% to 40% because the plume shapes were well identified due to constraint by NO2 measurements. The estimated NOx emission rates showed discrepancies more than 80% with those estimated by the REAS v3.1, mainly due to the uncertainties in activity data and emission factors, or in the greatly varying NO/NO2 ratios in fresh plumes, which warrant further investigations when estimating NOx emissions from satellite NO2 observations on km‐scales. Plain Language Summary: Burning of fossil fuels at high temperatures constitutes a major anthropogenic source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2). While CO2 stays in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, thereby being a well‐mixed gas, NO2 has a much shorter lifetime of only a few hours. This substantial difference in lifetime between NO2 and CO2 means that concurrent NO2 and CO2 observations obtained by the same platform can be used to identify the locations and strength of CO2 emissions from point sources such as power plants. In February 2018, for the first time, we obtained concurrent airborne spectroscopic NO2 and CO2 observations over an urban area, to demonstrate the traceability of NO2 to CO2. The plumes of co‐emitted NO2 and CO2 were derived from measured spectra. The plumes of NO2 and CO2 co‐emitted from the stacks of power plants were well identified owing to constraint by NO2. Uncertainties of inversed emission rates were statistically derived. For CO2, the results were within 40% in agreement with a bottom‐up emission inventory known as REAS v3.1. For NOx, however, a disagreement of 80% was identified, likely due to the uncertainties of the inventory data or in the NOx partitioning in fresh plumes. Abstract

This work describes the radiometric calibration of the short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands of two instruments aboard the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT), the Thermal And Near infrared Sensor for carbon Observations Fourier Transform Spectrometer (TANSO-FTS) and the Cloud and Aerosol Imager (TANSO-CAI). Four vicarious calibration campaigns (VCCs) have been performed annually since June 2009 at Railroad Valley, NV, USA, to estimate changes in the radiometric response of both sensors. While the 2009 campaign ( VCC2009) indicated significant initial degradation in the sensors compared to the prelaunch values, the results presented here show that the stability of the sensors has improved with time. The largest changes were seen in the 0.76 μm oxygen A-band for TANSO-FTS and in the 0.380 and 0.674 μm bands for TANSO-CAI. This paper describes techniques used to optimize the vicarious calibration of the GOSAT SWIR sensors. We discuss error reductions, relative to previous work, achieved by using higher quality and more comprehensive in situ measurements and proper selection of reference remote sensing products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer used in radiative transfer calculations to model top-of-the-atmosphere radiances. In addition, we present new estimates of TANSO-FTS radiometric degradation factors derived by combining the new vicarious calibration results with the time-dependent model provided by Yoshida (2012), which is based on analysis of on-board solar diffuser data. We conclude that this combined model provides a robust correction for TANSO-FTS Level 1B spectra. A detailed error budget for TANSO-FTS vicarious calibration is also provided, 資料番号: PA1410020000

Abstract

The Japanese Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite-2 (GOSAT-2), in orbit since 29 October 2018, follows up the GOSAT mission, itself in orbit since 23 January 2009. GOSAT-2 monitors carbon dioxide and methane in order to increase our understanding of the global carbon cycle. It simultaneously measures carbon monoxide emitted from fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning, and permits identification of the amount of combustion-related carbon. To do this, the satellite utilizes the Thermal and Near Infrared Sensor for Carbon Observation Fourier-Transform Spectomer-2 (TANSO-FTS-2). This spectrometer detects gas absorption spectra of solar radiation reflected from the Earth's surface in the shortwave-infrared (SWIR) region as well as the emitted thermal infrared radiation (TIR) from the ground and the atmosphere. TANSO-FTS-2 can measure the oxygen A band (0.76 um), weak and strong CO2 bands (1.6 um and 2.0 um), weak and strong CH4 bands (1.6 um and 2.3 um), a weak CO band (2.3 um), a mid-wave TIR band (5.5-8.4 um) and a long-wave TIR band (8.4-14.3 um) with 0.2 cm-1 spectral resolution. TANSO-FTS-2 is equipped with a solar diffuser target, a monochromatic light source, and a black body for spectral radiance calibration. These calibration sources permit characterization of time-dependent instrument changes in orbit. The onboard-recalibrated instrumental parameters are considered in operational level-1 processing and released as TANSO-FTS-2 level-1 version 102102 products, which were officially released on 25 May 2020. This paper provides an overview of the TANSO-FTS-2 instrument, the level-1 processing, and the first-year on-orbit performance. To validate the spectral radiance calibration during the first year of operation, the spectral radiance of the version 102102 product is compared at temporally coincident and spatially collocated points from February 2019 to March 2020 with TANSO-FTS on GOSAT for SWIR, and with AIRS on AQUA and IASI on METOP-B for TIR. The spectral radiances measured by TANSO-FTS and TANSO-FTS-2 agree within 2 % of the averaged bias and 0.5 % standard deviation for SWIR bands. The agreement of brightness temperature between TANSO-FTS-2 and AIRS, IASI, is better than 0.5 % in the range from 220 K to 320 K. GOSAT-2 not only provides seamless global CO2 and CH4 observation but also observes local emissions and uptake with an additional CO channel, fully customized sampling patterns, higher signal-to-noise ratios, and wider pointing angles than GOSAT. Abstract

The Thermal And Near infrared Sensor for carbon Observation Fourier-Transform Spectrometer (TANSO-FTS) onboard the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) (nicknamed "Ibuki") has been providing global space-borne observations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) since 2009. In this paper, we first describe the version V150.151 operational Level 1 algorithms that produce radiance spectra from the acquired interferograms. Second, we will describe the on-orbit characteristics and calibration of TANSO-FTS. Overall function and performance such as signal to noise ratio and spectral resolution are within design objectives. Correction methods of small on-orbit degradations and anomalies, which have been found since launch, are described. Lastly, calibration of TANSO Cloud and Aerosol Imager (TANSO-CAI) are summarized.
