Deceptive patterns (DPs) in digital interfaces manipulate users into making unintended decisions, exploiting cognitive biases and psychological vulnerabilities. These patterns have become ubiquitous across various digital platforms. While efforts to mitigate DPs have emerged from legal and technical perspectives, a significant gap in usable solutions that empower users to identify and make informed decisions about DPs in real-time remains. In this work, we introduce AutoBot, an automated, deceptive pattern detector that analyzes websites' visual appearances using machine learning techniques to identify and notify users of DPs in real-time. AutoBot employs a two-staged pipeline that processes website screenshots, identifying interactable elements and extracting textual features without relying on HTML structure. By leveraging a custom language model, AutoBot understands the context surrounding these elements to determine the presence of deceptive patterns. We implement AutoBot as a lightweight Chrome browser extension that performs all analyses locally, minimizing latency and preserving user privacy. Through extensive evaluation, we demonstrate AutoBot's effectiveness in enhancing users' ability to navigate digital environments safely while providing a valuable tool for regulators to assess and enforce compliance with DP regulations.

Pedestrian heading tracking enables applications in pedestrian navigation, traffic safety, and accessibility. Previous works, using inertial sensor fusion or machine learning, are limited in that they assume the phone is fixed in specific orientations, hindering their generalizability. We propose a new heading tracking algorithm, the Orientation-Heading Alignment (OHA), which leverages a key insight: people tend to carry smartphones in certain ways due to habits, such as swinging them while walking. For each smartphone attitude during this motion, OHA maps the smartphone orientation to the pedestrian heading and learns such mappings efficiently from coarse headings and smartphone orientations. To anchor our algorithm in a practical scenario, we apply OHA to a challenging task: predicting when pedestrians are about to cross the road to improve road user safety. In particular, using 755 hours of walking data collected since 2020 from 60 individuals, we develop a lightweight model that operates in real-time on commodity devices to predict road crossings. Our evaluation shows that OHA achieves 3.4 times smaller heading errors across nine scenarios than existing methods. Furthermore, OHA enables the early and accurate detection of pedestrian crossing behavior, issuing crossing alerts 0.35 seconds, on average, before pedestrians enter the road range., Comment: 25 pages

With the steadily increasing pedestrian fatalities, pedestrian safety is a growing concern, especially in urban environments. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been developed to mitigate road user risks by predicting potential pedestrian crossings and issuing timely driver alerts. However, there is limited understanding of how drivers respond to different modalities of alerts, particularly in the presence of false alarms. In this study, we utilized a full-scale driving simulator to compare the effectiveness of different alert modalities, audio-visual (AV), visual-tactile (VT), and audio-visual-tactile (AVT), in alerting drivers to various pedestrian jaywalking events. Our findings reveal that, compared to no alerts, multimodal alerts significantly increased the number of vehicles stopped for pedestrians and the distance to pedestrians when stopped. However, the false alarms negatively impacted driver trust, with some drivers exhibiting excessive caution, alert fatigue and anxiety, even including one instance where a driver fully stopped when no pedestrian was present., Comment: 15 pages

Product attribute value identification (PAVI) involves automatically identifying attributes and their values from product information, enabling features like product search, recommendation, and comparison. Existing methods primarily rely on fine-tuning pre-trained language models, such as BART and T5, which require extensive task-specific training data and struggle to generalize to new attributes. This paper explores large language models (LLMs), such as LLaMA and Mistral, as data-efficient and robust alternatives for PAVI. We propose various strategies: comparing one-step and two-step prompt-based approaches in zero-shot settings and utilizing parametric and non-parametric knowledge through in-context learning examples. We also introduce a dense demonstration retriever based on a pre-trained T5 model and perform instruction fine-tuning to explicitly train LLMs on task-specific instructions. Extensive experiments on two product benchmarks show that our two-step approach significantly improves performance in zero-shot settings, and instruction fine-tuning further boosts performance when using training data, demonstrating the practical benefits of using LLMs for PAVI.

Natural distribution shift causes a deterioration in the perception performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This comprehensive analysis for real-world traffic data addresses: 1) investigating the effect of natural distribution shift and weather augmentations on both detection quality and confidence estimation, 2) evaluating model performance for both classification and object localization, and 3) benchmarking two common uncertainty quantification methods - Ensembles and different variants of Monte-Carlo (MC) Dropout - under natural and close-to-natural distribution shift. For this purpose, a novel dataset has been curated from publicly available autonomous driving datasets. The in-distribution (ID) data is based on cutouts of a single object, for which both class and bounding box annotations are available. The six distribution-shift datasets cover adverse weather scenarios, simulated rain and fog, corner cases, and out-of-distribution data. A granular analysis of CNNs under distribution shift allows to quantize the impact of different types of shifts on both, task performance and confidence estimation: ConvNeXt-Tiny is more robust than EfficientNet-B0; heavy rain degrades classification stronger than localization, contrary to heavy fog; integrating MC-Dropout into selected layers only has the potential to enhance task performance and confidence estimation, whereby the identification of these layers depends on the type of distribution shift and the considered task., Comment: This preprint has not undergone any post-submission improvements or corrections

In this work, we explore a time-fractional diffusion equation of order $\alpha \in (0,1)$ with a stochastic diffusivity parameter. We focus on efficient estimation of the expected values (considered as an infinite dimensional integral on the parametric space corresponding to the random coefficients) of linear functionals acting on the solution of our model problem. To estimate the expected value computationally, the infinite expansions of the random parameter need to be truncated. Then we approximate the high-dimensional integral over the random field using a high-order quasi-Monte Carlo method. This follows by approximating the deterministic solution over the space-time domain via a second-order accurate time-stepping scheme in combination with a spatial discretization by Galerkin finite elements. Under reasonable regularity assumptions on the given data, we show some regularity properties of the continuous solution and investigate the errors from estimating the expected value. We report on numerical experiments that complement the theoretical results.

Privacy policies are crucial in the online ecosystem, defining how services handle user data and adhere to regulations such as GDPR and CCPA. However, their complexity and frequent updates often make them difficult for stakeholders to understand and analyze. Current automated analysis methods, which utilize natural language processing, have limitations. They typically focus on individual tasks and fail to capture the full context of the policies. We propose PolicyLR, a new paradigm that offers a comprehensive machine-readable representation of privacy policies, serving as an all-in-one solution for multiple downstream tasks. PolicyLR converts privacy policies into a machine-readable format using valuations of atomic formulae, allowing for formal definitions of tasks like compliance and consistency. We have developed a compiler that transforms unstructured policy text into this format using off-the-shelf Large Language Models (LLMs). This compiler breaks down the transformation task into a two-stage translation and entailment procedure. This procedure considers the full context of the privacy policy to infer a complex formula, where each formula consists of simpler atomic formulae. The advantage of this model is that PolicyLR is interpretable by design and grounded in segments of the privacy policy. We evaluated the compiler using ToS;DR, a community-annotated privacy policy entailment dataset. Utilizing open-source LLMs, our compiler achieves precision and recall values of 0.91 and 0.88, respectively. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of PolicyLR in three privacy tasks: Policy Compliance, Inconsistency Detection, and Privacy Comparison Shopping.

Topological magnets exhibit fascinating properties like topologically protected surface states or anomalous transport phenomena. While these properties can be significantly altered by manipulating the magnetic state, the experimental verification of such predictions remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the efficient magnetic field control of the Weyl semimetallic state of the collinear ferromagnet Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ by magneto-optical spectroscopy. We resolve a redshift of the nodal loop resonance as the magnetization is rotated into the kagome plane by the magnetic field. Our material-specific theory, capturing the observed field-induced spectral reconstruction, shows the creation of 26 Weyl points for one in-plane magnetization direction and predicts the emergence of a gapless nodal loop for the orthogonal in-plane magnetization orientation. These findings demonstrate that while topological band structures are generally considered robust, breaking underlying crystal symmetries with external fields provides an efficient way to manipulate them, even in collinear magnets. This approach opens exciting avenues to control band topology also in materials with more complex magnetic structures and even to study the interplay of real- and momentum-space topological states, e.g. in skyrmion-lattice systems.

In the field of detection and ranging, multiple complementary sensing modalities may be used to enrich the information obtained from a dynamic scene. One application of this sensor fusion is in public security and surveillance, whose efficacy and privacy protection measures must be continually evaluated. We present a novel deployment of sensor fusion for the discrete detection of concealed metal objects on persons whilst preserving their privacy. This is achieved by coupling off-the-shelf mmWave radar and depth camera technology with a novel neural network architecture that processes the radar signals using convolutional Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) blocks and the depth signal, using convolutional operations. The combined latent features are then magnified using a deep feature magnification to learn cross-modality dependencies in the data. We further propose a decoder, based on the feature extraction and embedding block, to learn an efficient upsampling of the latent space to learn the location of the concealed object in the spatial domain through radar feature guidance. We demonstrate the detection of presence and inference of 3D location of concealed metal objects with an accuracy of up to 95%, using a technique that is robust to multiple persons. This work provides a demonstration of the potential for cost effective and portable sensor fusion, with strong opportunities for further development.

The deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in decision-making applications requires ensuring an appropriate level of safety and reliability, particularly in changing environments that contain a large number of unknown observations. To address this challenge, we propose a novel safe reinforcement learning (RL) approach that utilizes an anomalous state sequence to enhance RL safety. Our proposed solution Safe Reinforcement Learning with Anomalous State Sequences (AnoSeqs) consists of two stages. First, we train an agent in a non-safety-critical offline 'source' environment to collect safe state sequences. Next, we use these safe sequences to build an anomaly detection model that can detect potentially unsafe state sequences in a 'target' safety-critical environment where failures can have high costs. The estimated risk from the anomaly detection model is utilized to train a risk-averse RL policy in the target environment; this involves adjusting the reward function to penalize the agent for visiting anomalous states deemed unsafe by our anomaly model. In experiments on multiple safety-critical benchmarking environments including self-driving cars, our solution approach successfully learns safer policies and proves that sequential anomaly detection can provide an effective supervisory signal for training safety-aware RL agents

Computer vision systems have been deployed in various applications involving biometrics like human faces. These systems can identify social media users, search for missing persons, and verify identity of individuals. While computer vision models are often evaluated for accuracy on available benchmarks, more annotated data is necessary to learn about their robustness and fairness against semantic distributional shifts in input data, especially in face data. Among annotated data, counterfactual examples grant strong explainability characteristics. Because collecting natural face data is prohibitively expensive, we put forth a generative AI-based framework to construct targeted, counterfactual, high-quality synthetic face data. Our synthetic data pipeline has many use cases, including face recognition systems sensitivity evaluations and image understanding system probes. The pipeline is validated with multiple user studies. Pediatric central nervous system tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children. The five-year survival rate for high-grade glioma in children is less than 20%. The development of new treatments is dependent upon multi-institutional collaborative clinical trials requiring reproducible and accurate centralized response assessment. We present the results of the BraTS-PEDs 2023 challenge, the first Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge focused on pediatric brain tumors. This challenge utilized data acquired from multiple international consortia dedicated to pediatric neuro-oncology and clinical trials. BraTS-PEDs 2023 aimed to evaluate volumetric segmentation algorithms for pediatric brain gliomas from magnetic resonance imaging using standardized quantitative performance evaluation metrics employed across the BraTS 2023 challenges. The top-performing AI approaches for pediatric tumor analysis included ensembles of nnU-Net and Swin UNETR, Auto3DSeg, or nnU-Net with a self-supervised framework. The BraTSPEDs 2023 challenge fostered collaboration between clinicians (neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists) and AI/imaging scientists, promoting faster data sharing and the development of automated volumetric analysis techniques. These advancements could significantly benefit clinical trials and improve the care of children with brain tumors.

Product attributes are crucial for e-commerce platforms, supporting applications like search, recommendation, and question answering. The task of Product Attribute and Value Identification (PAVI) involves identifying both attributes and their values from product information. In this paper, we formulate PAVI as a generation task and provide, to the best of our knowledge, the most comprehensive evaluation of PAVI so far. We compare three different attribute-value generation (AVG) strategies based on fine-tuning encoder-decoder models on three datasets. Experiments show that end-to-end AVG approach, which is computationally efficient, outperforms other strategies. In the evolving landscape of satellite communications, the deployment of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations promises to revolutionize global Internet access by providing low-latency, high-bandwidth connectivity to underserved regions. However, the dynamic nature of LEO satellite networks, characterized by rapid orbital movement and frequent changes in Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs), challenges the suitability of existing Internet protocols designed for static terrestrial infrastructures. Testing and developing new solutions and protocols on actual satellite mega-constellations are either too expensive or impractical because some of these constellations are not fully deployed yet. This creates the need for a realistic simulation platform that can accurately simulate this large scale of satellites, and allow end-to-end control over all aspects of LEO constellations. This paper introduces xeoverse, a scalable and realistic network simulator designed to support comprehensive LEO satellite network research and experimentation. By modeling user terminals, satellites, and ground stations as lightweight Linux virtual machines within Mininet and implementing three key strategies -- pre-computing topology and routing changes, updating only changing ISL links, and focusing on ISL links relevant to the simulation scenario -- xeoverse achieves real-time simulation, where 1 simulated second equals 1 wall-clock second. Our evaluations show that xeoverse outperforms state-of-the-art simulators Hypatia and StarryNet in terms of total simulation time by being 2.9 and 40 times faster, respectively., Comment: Accepted in IFIP/IEEE Networking 2024

The 2024 Brain Tumor Segmentation Meningioma Radiotherapy (BraTS-MEN-RT) challenge aims to advance automated segmentation algorithms using the largest known multi-institutional dataset of radiotherapy planning brain MRIs with expert-annotated target labels for patients with intact or postoperative meningioma that underwent either conventional external beam radiotherapy or stereotactic radiosurgery. Each case includes a defaced 3D post-contrast T1-weighted radiotherapy planning MRI in its native acquisition space, accompanied by a single-label "target volume" representing the gross tumor volume (GTV) and any at-risk postoperative site. Target volume annotations adhere to established radiotherapy planning protocols, ensuring consistency across cases and institutions. For preoperative meningiomas, the target volume encompasses the entire GTV and associated nodular dural tail, while for postoperative cases, it includes at-risk resection cavity margins as determined by the treating institution. Case annotations were reviewed and approved by expert neuroradiologists and radiation oncologists. Participating teams will develop, containerize, and evaluate automated segmentation models using this comprehensive dataset. Model performance will be assessed using an adapted lesion-wise Dice Similarity Coefficient and the 95% Hausdorff distance. The top-performing teams will be recognized at the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Conference in October 2024. Glioblastoma is the most common primary adult brain tumor, with a grim prognosis - median survival of 12-18 months following treatment, and 4 months otherwise. Glioblastoma is widely infiltrative in the cerebral hemispheres and well-defined by heterogeneous molecular and micro-environmental histopathologic profiles, which pose a major obstacle in treatment. Correctly diagnosing these tumors and assessing their heterogeneity is crucial for choosing the precise treatment and potentially enhancing patient survival rates. In the gold-standard histopathology-based approach to tumor diagnosis, detecting various morpho-pathological features of distinct histology throughout digitized tissue sections is crucial. Such "features" include the presence of cellular tumor, geographic necrosis, pseudopalisading necrosis, areas abundant in microvascular proliferation, infiltration into the cortex, wide extension in subcortical white matter, leptomeningeal infiltration, regions dense with macrophages, and the presence of perivascular or scattered lymphocytes. With these features in mind and building upon the main aim of the BraTS Cluster of Challenges https://www.synapse.org/brats2024, the goal of the BraTS-Path challenge is to provide a systematically prepared comprehensive dataset and a benchmarking environment to develop and fairly compare deep-learning models capable of identifying tumor sub-regions of distinct histologic profile. These models aim to further our understanding of the disease and assist in the diagnosis and grading of conditions in a consistent manner.

We describe the design and results from the BraTS 2023 Intracranial Meningioma Segmentation Challenge. The BraTS Meningioma Challenge differed from prior BraTS Glioma challenges in that it focused on meningiomas, which are typically benign extra-axial tumors with diverse radiologic and anatomical presentation and a propensity for multiplicity. Nine participating teams each developed deep-learning automated segmentation models using image data from the largest multi-institutional systematically expert annotated multilabel multi-sequence meningioma MRI dataset to date, which included 1000 training set cases, 141 validation set cases, and 283 hidden test set cases. Each case included T2, T2/FLAIR, T1, and T1Gd brain MRI sequences with associated tumor compartment labels delineating enhancing tumor, non-enhancing tumor, and surrounding non-enhancing T2/FLAIR hyperintensity. Participant automated segmentation models were evaluated and ranked based on a scoring system evaluating lesion-wise metrics including dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and 95% Hausdorff Distance. The top ranked team had a lesion-wise median dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.976, 0.976, and 0.964 for enhancing tumor, tumor core, and whole tumor, respectively and a corresponding average DSC of 0.899, 0.904, and 0.871, respectively. These results serve as state-of-the-art benchmarks for future pre-operative meningioma automated segmentation algorithms. Object detectors in real-world applications often fail to detect objects due to varying factors such as weather conditions and noisy input. Therefore, a process that mitigates false detections is crucial for both safety and accuracy. While uncertainty-based thresholding shows promise, previous works demonstrate an imperfect correlation between uncertainty and detection errors. This hinders ideal thresholding, prompting us to further investigate the correlation and associated cost with different types of uncertainty. We therefore propose a cost-sensitive framework for object detection tailored to user-defined budgets on the two types of errors, missing and false detections. We derive minimum thresholding requirements to prevent performance degradation and define metrics to assess the applicability of uncertainty for failure recognition. Furthermore, we automate and optimize the thresholding process to maximize the failure recognition rate w.r.t. the specified budget. Evaluation on three autonomous driving datasets demonstrates that our approach significantly enhances safety, particularly in challenging scenarios. Leveraging localization aleatoric uncertainty and softmax-based entropy only, our method boosts the failure recognition rate by 36-60\% compared to conventional approaches. Mobile apps have embraced user privacy by moving their data processing to the user's smartphone. Advanced machine learning (ML) models, such as vision models, can now locally analyze user images to extract insights that drive several functionalities. Capitalizing on this new processing model of locally analyzing user images, we analyze two popular social media apps, TikTok and Instagram, to reveal (1) what insights vision models in both apps infer about users from their image and video data and (2) whether these models exhibit performance disparities with respect to demographics. As vision models provide signals for sensitive technologies like age verification and facial recognition, understanding potential biases in these models is crucial for ensuring that users receive equitable and accurate services. We develop a novel method for capturing and evaluating ML tasks in mobile apps, overcoming challenges like code obfuscation, native code execution, and scalability. Our method comprises ML task detection, ML pipeline reconstruction, and ML performance assessment, specifically focusing on demographic disparities. We apply our methodology to TikTok and Instagram, revealing significant insights. For TikTok, we find issues in age and gender prediction accuracy, particularly for minors and Black individuals. This paper introduces HuLP, a Human-in-the-Loop for Prognosis model designed to enhance the reliability and interpretability of prognostic models in clinical contexts, especially when faced with the complexities of missing covariates and outcomes. HuLP offers an innovative approach that enables human expert intervention, empowering clinicians to interact with and correct models' predictions, thus fostering collaboration between humans and AI models to produce more accurate prognosis. Additionally, HuLP addresses the challenges of missing data by utilizing neural networks and providing a tailored methodology that effectively handles missing data. Traditional methods often struggle to capture the nuanced variations within patient populations, leading to compromised prognostic predictions. HuLP imputes missing covariates based on imaging features, aligning more closely with clinician workflows and enhancing reliability. We conduct our experiments on two real-world, publicly available medical datasets to demonstrate the superiority and competitiveness of HuLP.

In this paper, we introduce a black-box prompt optimization method that uses an attacker LLM agent to uncover higher levels of memorization in a victim agent, compared to what is revealed by prompting the target model with the training data directly, which is the dominant approach of quantifying memorization in LLMs. We use an iterative rejection-sampling optimization process to find instruction-based prompts with two main characteristics: (1) minimal overlap with the training data to avoid presenting the solution directly to the model, and (2) maximal overlap between the victim model's output and the training data, aiming to induce the victim to spit out training data. We observe that our instruction-based prompts generate outputs with 23.7% higher overlap with training data compared to the baseline prefix-suffix measurements. Our findings show that (1) instruction-tuned models can expose pre-training data as much as their base-models, if not more so, (2) contexts other than the original training data can lead to leakage, and (3) using instructions proposed by other LLMs can open a new avenue of automated attacks that we should further study and explore. Large language models (LLMs) are typically aligned to be harmless to humans. Unfortunately, recent work has shown that such models are susceptible to automated jailbreak attacks that induce them to generate harmful content. More recent LLMs often incorporate an additional layer of defense, a Guard Model, which is a second LLM that is designed to check and moderate the output response of the primary LLM. Our key contribution is to show a novel attack strategy, PRP, that is successful against several open-source (e.g., Llama 2) and closed-source (e.g., GPT 3.5) implementations of Guard Models. PRP leverages a two step prefix-based attack that operates by (a) constructing a universal adversarial prefix for the Guard Model, and (b) propagating this prefix to the response. We find that this procedure is effective across multiple threat models, including ones in which the adversary has no access to the Guard Model at all. Our work suggests that further advances are required on defenses and Guard Models before they can be considered effective.

Trust in digital systems depends on secure hardware, often assured through Hardware Reverse Engineering (HRE). This work develops methods for investigating human problem-solving processes in HRE, an underexplored yet critical aspect. Since reverse engineers rely heavily on visual information, eye tracking holds promise for studying their cognitive processes. To gain further insights, we additionally employ verbal thought protocols during and immediately after HRE tasks: Concurrent and Retrospective Think Aloud. We evaluate the combination of eye tracking and Think Aloud with 41 participants in an HRE simulation. Eye tracking accurately identifies fixations on individual circuit elements and highlights critical components. Based on two use cases, we demonstrate that eye tracking and Think Aloud can complement each other to improve data quality. Our methodological insights can inform future studies in HRE, a specific setting of human-computer interaction, and in other problem-solving settings involving misleading or missing information.

Large Language Models' success on text generation has also made them better at code generation and coding tasks. While a lot of work has demonstrated their remarkable performance on tasks such as code completion and editing, it is still unclear as to why. We help bridge this gap by exploring to what degree auto-regressive models understand the logical constructs of the underlying programs. We propose Counterfactual Analysis for Programming Concept Predicates (CACP) as a counterfactual testing framework to evaluate whether Large Code Models understand programming concepts. With only black-box access to the model, we use CACP to evaluate ten popular Large Code Models for four different programming concepts. Our findings suggest that current models lack understanding of concepts such as data flow and control flow.

Adversarial attacks against language models(LMs) are a significant concern. In particular, adversarial samples exploit the model's sensitivity to small input changes. While these changes appear insignificant on the semantics of the input sample, they result in significant decay in model performance. In this paper, we propose Targeted Paraphrasing via RL (TPRL), an approach to automatically learn a policy to generate challenging samples that most likely improve the model's performance. TPRL leverages FLAN T5, a language model, as a generator and employs a self learned policy using a proximal policy gradient to generate the adversarial examples automatically. TPRL's reward is based on the confusion induced in the classifier, preserving the original text meaning through a Mutual Implication score. We demonstrate and evaluate TPRL's effectiveness in discovering natural adversarial attacks and improving model performance through extensive experiments on four diverse NLP classification tasks via Automatic and Human evaluation. We investigate a second-order accurate time-stepping scheme for solving a time-fractional diffusion equation with a Caputo derivative of order~$\alpha \in (0,1)$. The basic idea of our scheme is based on local integration followed by linear interpolation. It reduces to the standard Crank--Nicolson scheme in the classical diffusion case, that is, as $\alpha\to 1$. Using a novel approach, we show that the proposed scheme is $\alpha$-robust and second-order accurate in the $L^2(L^2)$-norm, assuming a suitable time-graded mesh. For completeness, we use the Galerkin finite element method for the spatial discretization and discuss the error analysis under reasonable regularity assumptions on the given data.
