Calcite precipitation is a common phenomenon in calcium-rich hardwater lakes during spring and summer, but the number and spatial distribution of lakes with calcite precipitation is unknown. This paper presents a remote sensing based method to observe calcite precipitation over large areas, which are an important prerequisite for a systematic monitoring and evaluation of restoration measurements. We use globally archived satellite remote sensing data for a retrospective systematic assessment of past multi-temporal calcite precipitation events. The database of this study consists of 205 data sets that comprise freely available Landsat and Sentinel 2 data acquired between 1998 and 2015 covering the Northeast German Plain. Calcite precipitation is automatically identified using the green spectra and the metric BGR area, the triangular area between the blue, green and red reflectance value. The validation is based on field measurements of CaCO3 concentrations at three selected lakes, Feldberger Haussee, Breiter Luzin and Schmaler Luzin. The classification accuracy (0.88) is highest for calcite concentrations ≥0.7 mg/L. False negative results are caused by the choice of a conservative classification threshold. False positive results can be explained by already increased calcite concentrations. We successfully transferred the developed method to 21 other hardwater lakes in Northeast Germany. The average duration of lakes with regular calcite precipitation is 37 days. The frequency of calcite precipitation reaches from single time detections up to detections nearly every year. False negative classification results and gaps in Landsat time series reduce the accuracy of frequency and duration monitoring, but in future the image density will increase by acquisitions of Sentinel-2a (and 2b). Our analyses show that surface water warming rates are dependent on combinations of climate and local characteristics, rather than just lake location, leading to the counterintuitive result that regional consistency in lake warming is the exception, rather than the rule. The most rapidly warming lakes are widely geographically distributed, and their warming is associated with interactions among different climatic factors—from seasonally ice-covered lakes in areas where temperature and solar radiation are increasing while cloud cover is diminishing (0.72°C decade−1) to ice-free lakes experiencing increases in air temperature and solar radiation (0.53°C decade−1). The pervasive and rapid warming observed here signals the urgent need to incorporate climate impacts into vulnerability assessments and adaptation efforts for lakes.

Externe Einträge von Nährstoffen, vor allem von Phosphor, fördern die Phytoplanktonentwicklung und sind damit die primäre Ursache für die Verschlechterung der Gewässergüte in Seen. Die pelagische Nahrungsnetzstruktur kann dabei sowohl positiv als auch negativ auf die Gewässergüte einwirken. Deshalb lässt sich der Gewässerzustand durch eine gezielte Steuerung der Räuber-Beute-Verhältnisse verändern. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden Ergebnisse der Groß-Enclosure-Experimente zu den Auswirkungen von Nährstoffen (mit/ohne Zugabe von Nährstoffen) sowie von einer manipulierten Nahrungsnetzstruktur (mit/ohne Zugabe von planktivoren Fischen) auf die pelagische Phyto- und Zooplanktongemeinschaft eines thermisch geschichteten Sees (Dagowsee, Brandenburg) präsentiert. Im Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen lagen dabei die qualitativen und quantitativen Effekte dieser beiden Faktoren auf die Sedimentationsprozesse sowie den mikrobiellen Umsatz von Kohlenstoff und Phosphor im Hypolimnion und an der Sediment-Wasser-Kontaktzone des Sees. Es wurde gezeigt, dass die Manipulation der Nahrungsnetzstruktur sich auf die Menge und Zusammensetzung des Phyto- und Zooplanktons im Epilimnion des Sees sowie auf den quantitativen vertikalen Transport von Kohlenstoff und Phosphor auswirkte, während die unterschiedliche Nährstoffbelastung im Epilimnion die spezifischen Stoffgehalte des Kohlenstoffs und Phosphors im sedimentierten Material beeinflussten. Anhand der Sauerstoff- und Methanmessungen wurde festgestellt, dass die Intensität des mikrobiellen Abbaus der sedimentierten organischen Substanz vor allem von ihrer Menge abhängig war. Weiterhin konnten die Auswirkungen der manipulierten Nahrungsnetzstruktur auf die Effizienz während des Abbaus vom organischen Kohlenstoff in den Laborversuchen nachgewiesen werden. Diese Effekte waren allerdings in den Freilandexperimenten schwer nachweisbar aufgrund der Beteiligung der Abbauprodukte in anderen oxidativ-reduktiven Prozessen, die gleichzeitig im See v, External load of nutrients, above all from phosphorus, promote the phytoplankton development and are with it the primary cause for the deterioration of the waters quality in lakes. Further, the pelagic food web structure can affect the water quality in a positive as well as in a negative way. Therefore, the water trophic state can be changed by a specific control of the predator-prey relations. In the present study the results of the large enclosure experiments to the impact by nutrients (with/without addition of nutrients) as well as by a manipulated food web structure (with/without addition of planktivorous fish) on the pelagic phyto- and zooplankton community of a thermally stratified lake (Dagowsee, Brandenburg) were presented. Furthermore, the qualitative and quantitative effects of these both factors on the sedimentation processes as well as the microbial turnover of settled carbon and phosphorus in the hypolimnion and at the sediment-water layer of the lake were in the main focus of the investigations. It has been shown that the manipulation of the food web structure affected the amount and composition of the phyto- and zooplankton in the epilimnion as well as the quantitative vertical transport of carbon and phosphorus, while the different nutrient load in the epilimnion influenced the specific material content of the carbon and phosphorus in the sedimented material. With the help of the oxygen and methane measurements it was found out that the intensity of the microbial decomposition of the settled organic matter was dependent above all on her quantity. Furthermore, the effects of the manipulated food web structure on the decomposition efficiency of the organic carbon could be proved in the laboratory tests. However, these effects were in the free land experiments hardly provably due to the participation of the endproducts in other redox processes which ran at the same time in the lake. Ziel der Arbeit war eine möglichst umfassende Analyse der Nahrungsbedingungen von D. galeata unter Berücksichtigung der damit verbundenen Strategien der Daphnien zur Optimierung des Nahrungserwerbs, um den Einfluß dieser Faktoren bezüglich des Auftretens einer Sommerdepression der Daphnien zu beurteilen. Aufbauend auf den bereits vorhandenen Kenntnissen aus der Literatur sollte dazu im Rahmen der Arbeit festgestellt werden, ob morphologische Veränderungen des Filtrationsapparates der Daphnien (Ausbildung großer, hydrodynamisch dichter Filter), die als Reaktion auf die geringen Nahrungsmengen im Klarwasserstadium auftreten, bei einer drastischen Erhöhung der Nahrungskonzentration zu einer "Überlastung" der Filterbeine der Daphnien, zu hohen Energieausgaben und schließlich zu erhöhter Mortalität (Sommerdepression) führen können. Hauptziel war dabei die Klärung der Frage, ob bottom-up gesteuerte schnelle Veränderungen im Nahrungsangebot, wie sie für geringe bottom-up Limitation (Hypertrophie) typisch sind, eine erhöhte Mortalität bei Daphnien hervorrufen können. Die Beantwortung dieser Fragestellung ist wichtig, um die Effizienz der top-down Steuerung (Biomanipulation) als ökotechnologische Maßnahme zur Gewässersanierung zu erhöhen. Dazu wurden in der biomanipulierten Talsperre Bautzen in drei Untersuchungsjahren (1997 - 1999) wichtige bottom-up wirkende Steuerfaktoren der Daphnienentwicklung sowie morphologische Charakteristika der Filterkämme und physiologische Leistungskriterien von D. galeata vor und während der Zeit des potentiellen Auftretens einer Sommerdepression untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen ließ sich ableiten, daß das Zusammenspiel der vielfältigen Anpassungsmöglichkeiten der Daphnien in einem bestimmten Variationsbereich der Steuerfaktoren eine erfolgreiche Strategie zur Optimierung der Nahrungsaufnahme darstellen kann. Werden jedoch bestimmte Schwellenwerte über- oder unterschritten, ist eine Kompensation durch die Anpassungsstrategien n, The occurrence of midsummer declines of daphnids is often related to poor food conditions or fish predation. In this three-year-study on the midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata field investigations in the highly eutrophic biomanipulated Bautzen reservoir were combined with flow-through experiments in the laboratory. The following hypothesis was tested: The inability of adult Daphnia to reduce the filtering area of their feeding appendages in response to fast increasing food levels after a clear-water phase enhances adult mortality. During the clear-water phase daphnids develop large and dense filtercombs to optimise their filter feeding. When food concentrations increase, however, this adaptation to low-food situation may be inappropriate due to too high energy consumtion. As adult daphnids cannot reduce the size of their feeding appendages, the filtration process may be hindered when seston concentrations rise, resulting in reduced fitness and increasing adult mortality. Indeed, adult survival in the laboratory (predation excluded) drastically decreased exactly at that time when the Daphnia galeata population in Bautzen reservoir declined. However, enhanced mortality was found irrespective of different food conditions offered during the experiments. It is concluded that increased mortality of adult daphnids is not an direct effect of their inability to adapt the morphology of their filtercombs to high seston concentrations. Furthermore daphnids are able to compensate unfavorable food conditions within a certain range by different kinds of adaptation mechanisms. Therefore the timing of the changes of food conditions and the adaptations of daphnids is most important to the efficiency of energy gain of the daphnids. Concerning the success of biomanipulation it is concluded that in addition to the regulation of top-down mechanisms there is an urgent need for control of bottom-up processes in order to stabilize the ecosystem.

Ziel der Arbeit war es, die Hypothese von CARNEY & ELSER (1990), dass unter mesotrophen Bedingungen die trophische Transfereffizienz vom Phytoplankton zum Crustaceenplankton maximal ist, in einem Ganz-Seen-Experiment zu überprüfen. Die Untersuchungen erfolgten im Rahmen des Projektes "Top-Down-Steuerung planktischer Biozönosen" am mesotrophen Großen Vätersee (Brandenburg). Die Fragen, welchen Einfluß das Crustaceenplankton auf die Primärproduzenten ausübt, wie die Primärproduzenten auf den Grazingdruck reagieren, und welche Verhaltensweisen der Crustaceen die Kopplungsstärke zu den Primärproduzenten oder den Prädatoren kausal beeinflussen, standen im Mittelpunkt. Primärproduktion (PPR) und Crustaceengrazing wurden in situ gemessen, Crustaceen-biomassen, -produktion und -verteilung bestimmt und mit den Daten der angrenzenden Teilprojekte in Beziehung gesetzt. Der prozentuale Anteil des Nanoplanktons an der absoluten PPR erreichte im Durchschnitt 52 %. Die Chl a spezifische PPR dieser Fraktion war signifikant positiv korreliert mit den effektiven Filtrierraten der Daphnien. Die spezifische PPR von Pico- und Netzphytoplankton blieb von den effektiven Filtrierraten unbeeinflusst. Die Blaualgen, Hauptbestandteil des Picoplanktons, stellten eine schlechte Nahrungsquelle für Daphnien dar. Dies zeigten Laborversuche zur Nahrungsqualität. Durch den hohen Beitrag des Nanoplanktons an der PPR bestand zwischen den Primärproduzenten und den Crustaceen eine starke Kopplung. 1998 betrug die Konsumtions-Transfereffizienz von den Primärproduzenten zu den Crustaceen 25 %. Im Vergleich dazu war der Anteil der Planktivorenkonsumtion an der Produktion der Crustaceen mit 14 % deutlich geringer. Die Konsumtion erklärte im Frühsommer während der hohen Verluste der Daphnien maximal 20 % der Mortalität. Kam es im Hochsommer zu höheren Abundanzen invertebrater Räuber, war deren Prädationsdruck hoch genug, die Daphnienpopulation auf niedrigem Niveau zu halten. Somit w
