We present a coil system designed to generate a highly uniform magnetic field for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. It consists of a main $B_0$ coil and a set of auxiliary coils mounted on a cubic structure with a side length of 273 cm, inside a large magnetically shielded room (MSR). We have assembled this system and characerized its performances with a mapping robot. The apparatus is able to generate a 1 $\mu$ T vertical field with a relative root mean square deviation $\sigma$ ($B_z$)/$B_z$ = 3 $\times$ $10^{-5}$ over the volume of interest, a cylinder of radius 40 cm and height 30 cm. This level of uniformity overcomes the n2EDM requirements, allowing a measurement of the neutron Electric Dipole Moment with a sensitivity better than 1 $\times$ $10^{-27}$ ecm., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

We construct a relativistic quantum communication channel between two localized qubit systems, mediated by a relativistic quantum field, that can achieve the theoretical maximum for the quantum capacity in arbitrary curved spacetimes using the Unruh-DeWitt detector formalism. Using techniques from algebraic quantum field theory, we express the quantum capacity of the quantum communication channel purely in terms of the correlation functions of the field and the causal propagator for the wave equation. Consequently, the resulting quantum channel, and hence the quantum capacity, are by construction manifestly covariant, respect the causal structure of spacetime, and are independent of the details of the background geometry, topology, and the choice of Hilbert space (quasifree) representations of the field., Comment: 15+4 pages, 1 figure; revtex4-2; v3: fixed typos and added clarifications

The aim of this paper is to give the answer to the problem of characterization of acting conditions (necessary as well as sufficient) for composition operators in some sequence spaces. We also characterize their boundedness and local boundedness. The application of heat treatments on 1.3 GHz TESLA type cavities in ultra-high vacuum at 250{\deg}C to 350{\deg}C is called medium temperature or mid-T heat treatment. In various laboratories such treatments on superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities result reproducible in three main characteristic features for the quality factor $Q_0$ in dependency of the accelerating electric field strength $E_{acc}$. First, comparing mid-T heat treatment with a baseline treatment, a significant increase of $Q_0$ up to $5\cdot10^{10}$ at 2K can be observed. Second, with increasing accelerating gradient $E_{acc}$ the $Q_0$ increases up to a maximum around 16 to 20 MV/m. This effect is known as anti-Q-slope. The third observation for a mid-T heat treatment compared to a baseline treatment is an often reduced maximum gradient $E_{acc}$. The appearance of a high-field-Q-slope (HFQS) was reported after mid-T heat treatments of 3 hours at 350{\deg}C or of 20 hours at 300{\deg}C at DESY. Using the heating temperature and the heating time taken from the temperature profile of the furnace effective oxygen diffusion lengths $l$ were calculated. In the follow-up study presented here, a set of three single-cell cavities with diffusion lengths $l$ above 1700 nm, showing HFQS, were treated with an additional so-called low-T bake of 24-48 hours at 120{\deg}C to 130{\deg}C. The subsequent reproducible Q(E) -performances results indicate that the low-T bake procedure cures the HFQS like for cavities treated with the EuXFEL recipe of EP and following low-T treatments. As presented in the following, Q values of more than $3\cdot10^{10}$ at 16 MV/m and accelerating gradients of 32 to 40 MV/m are achieved., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

This comprehensive study, being part of the European XFEL R\&D effort, elucidates the influence of medium temperature (mid-T) heat treatments between 250{\deg}C and 350{\deg}C on the performance of 1.3~GHz superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) niobium cavities. Utilizing a refurbished niobium retort furnace equipped with an inter-vacuum chamber and cryopumps at DESY, we have embarked on an investigation to enhance the state-of-the-art SRF cavity technology. Our research reveals that mid-T heat treatments significantly boost the quality factor ($Q_0$) of the cavities, achieving values between $2\cdot10^{10}$ to $5\cdot10^{10}$ at field strengths around 16~MV/m, while the maximum field strengths are limited to 25-35~MV/m and enhanced sensitivity to trapped magnetic flux is observed. Moreover, we delve into the effects of surface impurity concentration changes, particularly the diffusion of oxygen content, and its impact on performance enhancements. By categorizing treatments based on calculated diffusion lengths using the whole temperature profile, we recognize patterns that suggest an optimal diffusion length conducive to optimizing cavity performance. SIMS results from samples confirm the calculated oxygen diffusion lengths in most instances. Deviations are primarily attributed to grain boundaries in fine-grain materials, necessitating repeated measurements on single-crystal materials to further investigate this phenomenon. Investigations into cooling rates and the resulting spatial temperature gradients across the cavities ranging from 0.04 to 0.2~K/mm reveal no significant correlation with performance following a mid-T heat treatment. However, the increased sensitivity to trapped magnetic flux leads to new challenges in the quest for next-generation accelerator technologies since the requirement for magnetic hygiene gets stricter., Comment: 15 pages, 24 figures

Hamiltonian encoding is a methodology for revealing the mechanism behind the dynamics governing controlled quantum systems. In this paper, following Mitra and Rabitz [Phys. Rev. A 67, 033407 (2003)], we define mechanism via pathways of eigenstates that describe the evolution of the system, where each pathway is associated with a complex-valued amplitude corresponding to a term in the Dyson series. The evolution of the system is determined by the constructive and destructive interference of these pathway amplitudes. Pathways with similar attributes can be grouped together into pathway classes. The amplitudes of pathway classes are computed by modulating the Hamiltonian matrix elements and decoding the subsequent evolution of the system rather than by direct computation of the individual terms in the Dyson series. The original implementation of Hamiltonian encoding was computationally intensive and became prohibitively expensive in large quantum systems. This paper presents two new encoding algorithms that calculate the amplitudes of pathway classes by using techniques from graph theory and algebraic topology to exploit patterns in the set of allowed transitions, greatly reducing the number of matrix elements that need to be modulated. These new algorithms provide an exponential decrease in both computation time and memory utilization with respect to the Hilbert space dimension of the system. The classical Mycielski transformation allows for constructing from a given graph the new one, with an arbitrarily large chromatic number but preserving the size of the largest clique contained in it. This particular construction and its specific generalizations were widely discussed in graph theory literature. Semiconductor quantum dot molecules are considered as promising candidates for quantum technological applications due to their wide tunability of optical properties and coverage of different energy scales associated with charge and spin physics. While previous works have studied the tunnel-coupling of the different excitonic charge complexes shared by the two quantum dots by conventional optical spectroscopy, we here report on the first demonstration of a coherently controlled inter-dot tunnel-coupling focusing on the quantum coherence of the optically active trion transitions. We employ ultrafast four-wave mixing spectroscopy to resonantly generate a quantum coherence in one trion complex, transfer it to and probe it in another trion configuration. With the help of theoretical modelling on different levels of complexity we give an instructive explanation of the underlying coupling mechanism and dynamical processes.

We report on a search for a new, short-range, spin-dependent interaction using a modified version of the experimental apparatus used to measure the permanent neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This interaction, which could be mediated by axion-like particles, concerned the unpolarized nucleons (protons and neutrons) near the material surfaces of the apparatus and polarized ultracold neutrons stored in vacuum. The dominant systematic uncertainty resulting from magnetic-field gradients was controlled to an unprecedented level of approximately 4 pT/cm using an array of optically-pumped cesium vapor magnetometers and magnetic-field maps independently recorded using a dedicated measurement device. No signature of a theoretically predicted new interaction was found, and we set a new limit on the product of the scalar and the pseudoscalar couplings $g_sg_p\lambda^2 < 8.3 \times 10^{-28}\,\text{m}^2$ (95% C.L.) in a range of $5\,\mu\text{m} < \lambda < 25\,\text{mm}$ for the monopole-dipole interaction. This new result confirms and improves our previous limit by a factor of 2.7 and provides the current tightest limit obtained with free neutrons.

Using four-wave mixing microscopy, we measure the coherent response and ultrafast dynamics of excitons and trions in MoSe$_2$ monolayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on thin films of hexagonal boron nitride. We assess inhomogeneous and homogeneous broadenings in the transition spectral lineshape. The impact of phonons on the homogeneous dephasing is inferred via the temperature dependence of the dephasing. Four-wave mixing mapping, combined with the atomic force microscopy, reveals spatial correlations between exciton oscillator strength, inhomogeneous broadening and the sample morphology. The quality of coherent optical response of the epitaxially grown transition metal dichalcogenides becomes now comparable with the samples produced by mechanical exfoliation, enabling coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of innovative materials, like magnetic layers or Janus semiconductors.

Quantifying and controlling the coherent dynamics and couplings of optically active excitations in solids is of paramount importance in fundamental research in condensed matter optics and for their prospective optoelectronic applications in quantum technologies. Here, we perform ultrafast coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of a charge-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer. The experiments show that the homogeneous and inhomogeneous line width and the population decay of exciton complexes hosted by this material can be directly tuned by an applied gate bias, which governs the Fermi level and therefore the free carrier density. By performing two-dimensional spectroscopy, we also show that the same bias-tuning approach permits us to control the coherent coupling strength between charged and neutral exciton complexes.

Variational Inference (VI) is an attractive alternative to Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) due to its computational efficiency in the case of large datasets and/or complex models with high-dimensional parameters. However, evaluating the accuracy of variational approximations remains a challenge. Existing methods characterize the quality of the whole variational distribution, which is almost always poor in realistic applications, even if specific posterior functionals such as the component-wise means or variances are accurate. Hence, these diagnostics are of practical value only in limited circumstances. To address this issue, we propose the TArgeted Diagnostic for Distribution Approximation Accuracy (TADDAA), which uses many short parallel MCMC chains to obtain lower bounds on the error of each posterior functional of interest. We also develop a reliability check for TADDAA to determine when the lower bounds should not be trusted. Numerical experiments validate the practical utility and computational efficiency of our approach on a range of synthetic distributions and real-data examples, including sparse logistic regression and Bayesian neural network models., Comment: Code to reproduce all of our experiments is available at https://github.com/TARPS-group/TADDAA

Scintillator detector response modelling has become an essential tool in various research fields such as particle and nuclear physics, astronomy or geophysics. Yet, due to the system complexity and the requirement for accurate electron response measurements, model inference and calibration remains a challenge. Here, we propose Compton edge probing to perform non-proportional scintillation model (NPSM) inference for inorganic scintillators. We use laboratory-based gamma-ray radiation measurements with a NaI(Tl) scintillator to perform Bayesian inference on a NPSM. Further, we apply machine learning to emulate the detector response obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the proposed methodology successfully constrains the NPSM and hereby quantifies the intrinsic resolution. Moreover, using the trained emulators, we can predict the spectral Compton edge dynamics as a function of the parameterized scintillation mechanisms.
