25. Correlating fractography with mechanical properties of microalloyed 2219Al alloys under different thermo-mechanical conditions.

Abstract

2219Al alloys microalloyed with varying trace contents (0–0.1 wt.%) of Cd were cast, and subjected to standard sequential thermo-mechanical processes of rolling and age-hardening treatments. Uniaxial tensile and Charpy impact tests were performed, and fractured surfaces were studied under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Variations in tensile ductility and toughness with trace additions of Cd were reported under given processing conditions. Independent influences of Cd compositions, peak-ageing treatment and rolling were investigated to identify predominant fracture modes (ductile/fibrous, brittle/cleavage or mixed) of 2219Al alloys for the first time. Salient features and fracture mechanisms as exhibited from the fractographs were further correlated with microstructural evolution, mechanical ductility and toughness. Cast 2219Al alloy exhibited typically ductile fractographs, compared to moderate level of ductility after microalloying. Lower fracture strain and toughness of peak-aged alloys were accompanied with mixed mode of fracture surfaces. Rolling resulted in fractographs of mixed mode, however with higher ductility compared to peak-aged alloys. Impact testing resulted in failure at higher strain rate, exhibiting typically brittle fractographs, correlated with the impact toughness values. Present fractographic analysis provided a structure-property correlation, to validate the susceptibility of these alloys, to different modes of failure, subjected under various loading and thermo-mechanical treatments. 26. Development of Hall-Petch and Hollomon models for thermo-mechanically treated Al-Cu-Mg alloys with trace additions of Sn.

Abstract

Present study aims to develop Hall-Petch and Hollomon models for Al-6.2 wt.%Cu-0.6 wt.%Mg alloys microalloyed with varying Sn contents, under different thermo-mechanical treatments. Average grain sizes were microscopically determined, and uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to generate flow curves and evaluate yield strength of the alloys. Average grain diameter of Al-Cu-Mg base alloy decreased (by 19.9 %), while yield strength concomitantly increased (by 17.6 %), with increasing Sn content up to 0.06 wt.%. Rolled peak-aged alloys recorded highest average grain refinement and increase in yield strength by 41% and 98.8% respectively, among all thermo-mechanical treatments. Influence of grain size on mechanical strength was analytically modelled through Hall-Petch equation, using Weighted Least Square methodology. Hall-Petch parameters of the alloys were evaluated for first time, considering separate processing conditions. Yield strengths computed from Hall-Petch models were successfully compared with experimental results with fairly good accuracy, to validate estimated Hall-Petch parameters. Flow curves obtained from uniaxial tensile tests were mathematically modelled through Hollomon equation, by determining strain hardening exponent and strength coefficient, first time for investigated alloys under different processing conditions. Trace contents of Sn and processing parameters had significant potential to refine grain structure and enhance mechanical strength of the Al-Cu-Mg alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Process parameter optimization of plastic injection molding: a review

Abstract

Over the years, injection molding has been a premier manufacturing technique in the production of intricate polymer components. Its molding efficiency rests on the shoulders of multiple process and machine parameters, which dictate the final product quality in terms of multiple output responses. It is imperative to state that a precise optimization of various input parameters is paramount for achieving the desired quality indices. In this article, a review of different techniques employed till date for optimizing various injection molding parameters is presented along with their advantages and limitations. It is found in the review that a complete intelligent technique operable without human interference is yet to be developed.
