Portfolio Optimization (PO) is a financial problem aiming to maximize the net gains while minimizing the risks in a given investment portfolio. The novelty of Quantum algorithms lies in their acclaimed potential and capability to solve complex problems given the underlying Quantum Computing (QC) infrastructure. Utilizing QC's applicable strengths to the finance industry's problems, such as PO, allows us to solve these problems using quantum-based algorithms such as Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) and Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). While the Quantum potential for finance is highly impactful, the architecture and composition of the quantum circuits have not yet been properly defined as robust financial frameworks/algorithms as state of the art in present literature for research and design development purposes. In this work, we propose a novel scalable framework, denoted PO-QA, to systematically investigate the variation of quantum parameters (such as rotation blocks, repetitions, and entanglement types) to observe their subtle effect on the overall performance. In our paper, the performance is measured and dictated by convergence to similar ground-state energy values for resultant optimal solutions by each algorithm variation set for QAOA and VQE to the exact eigensolver (classical solution). Our results provide effective insights into comprehending PO from the lens of Quantum Machine Learning in terms of convergence to the classical solution, which is used as a benchmark. Creating plasmonic nanoparticles on a tapered optical fiber tip enables a remote SERS sensing probe, ideal for challenging sampling scenarios like biological tissue, specific cells, on-site environmental monitoring, and deep brain structures. However, nanoparticle patterns fabricated from current bottom-up methods are mostly random, making geometry control difficult. Uneven statistical distribution, clustering, and multilayer deposition introduce uncertainty in correlating device performance with morphology. Here, we employ a tunable solid-state dewetting method to create densely packed monolayer Au nanoislands (NIs) with varied geometric parameters, directly contacting the silica TF surface. These patterns exhibit analyzable nanoparticle sizes, densities, and uniform distribution across the entire taper surface, enabling a systematic investigation of particle size, density, and analyte effects on the SERS performance of the through-fiber detection system. The study is focused on the SERS response of a widely employed benchmark Rhodamine 6G molecule and Serotonin, a neurotransmitter with high relevance for the neuroscience field. The numerical simulations and limit of detection (LOD) experiments on R6G show that the increase of the total near-field enhancement volume promotes the SERS sensitivity of the probe. However, for serotonin we observed a different behavior linked to its interaction with the nanoparticle's surface. The obtained LOD is as low as 10-7 M, a value not achieved so far in a through-fiber detection scheme. Therefore, we believe our work offers a strategy to design nanoparticle-based remote SERS sensing probes and provide new clues to discover and understand the intricate plasmonic-driven chemical reactions.

Extended versions of the noncommutative(nc) KP equation and the nc mKP equation are constructed in a unified way, for which two types of quasideterminant solutions are also presented. In commutative setting, the quasideterminant solutions provide the known and unknown Wronskian and Grammian solutions for the bilinear KP equation with self-consistent sources and the bilinear mKP equation with self-consistent sources, respectively. Miura transformation is established for the extended nc KP and nc mKP equations.

In current noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, hybrid quantum-classical neural networks (HQNNs) represent a promising solution that combines the strengths of classical machine learning with quantum computing capabilities. Compared to classical deep neural networks (DNNs), HQNNs present an additional set of hyperparameters, which are specific to quantum circuits. These quantum-specific hyperparameters, such as quantum circuit depth, number of qubits, type of entanglement, number of shots, and measurement observables, can significantly impact the behavior of the HQNNs and their capabilities to learn the given task. In this paper, we investigate the impact of these variations on different HQNN models for image classification tasks, implemented on the PennyLane framework. We aim to uncover intuitive and counter-intuitive learning patterns of HQNN models within granular levels of controlled quantum perturbations, to form a sound basis for their correlation to accuracy and training time. In this paper, we present a novel framework for enhancing the performance of Quanvolutional Neural Networks (QuNNs) by introducing trainable quanvolutional layers and addressing the critical challenges associated with them. Traditional quanvolutional layers, although beneficial for feature extraction, have largely been static, offering limited adaptability. Unlike state-of-the-art, our research overcomes this limitation by enabling training within these layers, significantly increasing the flexibility and potential of QuNNs. However, the introduction of multiple trainable quanvolutional layers induces complexities in gradient-based optimization, primarily due to the difficulty in accessing gradients across these layers. To resolve this, we propose a novel architecture, Residual Quanvolutional Neural Networks (ResQuNNs), leveraging the concept of residual learning, which facilitates the flow of gradients by adding skip connections between layers. By inserting residual blocks between quanvolutional layers, we ensure enhanced gradient access throughout the network, leading to improved training performance. Moreover, we provide empirical evidence on the strategic placement of these residual blocks within QuNNs. Through extensive experimentation, we identify an efficient configuration of residual blocks, which enables gradients across all the layers in the network that eventually results in efficient training. Our findings suggest that the precise location of residual blocks plays a crucial role in maximizing the performance gains in QuNNs. Our results mark a substantial step forward in the evolution of quantum deep learning, offering new avenues for both theoretical development and practical quantum computing applications.

In this paper, we conduct a comprehensively analyze the influence of different quantum noise gates, including Phase Flip, Bit Flip, Phase Damping, Amplitude Damping, and the Depolarizing Channel, on the performance of HyQNNs. Our results reveal distinct and significant effects on HyQNNs training and validation accuracies across different probabilities of noise. For instance, the Phase Flip gate introduces phase errors, and we observe that HyQNNs exhibit resilience at higher probability (p = 1.0), adapting effectively to consistent noise patterns, whereas at intermediate probabilities, the performance declines. Bit Flip errors, represented by the PauliX gate, impact HyQNNs in a similar way to that Phase Flip error gate. The HyQNNs, can adapt such kind of errors at maximum probability (p = 1.0). Unlike Phase and Bit Flip error gates, Phase Damping and Amplitude Damping gates disrupt quantum information, with HyQNNs demonstrating resilience at lower probabilities but facing challenges at higher probabilities. Amplitude Damping error gate, in particular, poses efficiency and accuracy issues at higher probabilities however with lowest probability (p = 0.1),it has the least effect and the HyQNNs, however not very effectively, but still tends to learn. The Depolarizing Channel proves most detrimental to HyQNNs performance, with limited or no training improvements. There was no training potential observed regardless of the probability of this noise gate. These findings underscore the critical need for advanced quantum error mitigation and resilience strategies in the design and training of HyQNNs, especially in environments prone to depolarizing noise. This paper quantitatively investigate that understanding the impact of quantum noise gates is essential for harnessing the full potential of quantum computing in practical applications.

This paper delves into the intricate dynamics of quantum noise and its influence on the onset and mitigation of barren plateaus (BPs) - a phenomenon that critically impedes the scalability of QNNs. We find that BPs appear earlier in noisy quantum environments compared to ideal, noise-free conditions.However, strategic selection of qubit measurement observables can effectively tackle this issue. To this end, we examine a variety of observables, such as PauliZ,PauliX, PauliY, and a specially designed arbitrary Hermitian observable, tailored to the requirements of the cost function and the desired outputs of quantum circuits. Our analysis encompasses both global and local cost function definitions, with the former involving measurements across all qubits and the latter focusing on single-qubit measurements within the QNN framework. Our findings indicate that in a global cost function scenario, PauliX and PauliY observables lead to flatter optimization landscapes, signaling BPs with increasing qubits, especially in noisy conditions. Conversely, the PauliZ observable maintains trainability up to 8 qubits but encounters BPs at 10 qubits. Notably, the arbitrary Hermitian observable, when used with a global cost function, shows a unique advantage as it benefits from noise, facilitating effective training up to 10 qubits. Furthermore, with a local cost function, out of the three conventional observables (PauliX, PauliY and PauliZ), PauliZ is more effective, sustaining training efficiency under noisy conditions for up to 10 qubits, while PauliX and PauliY do not show similar benefits and remain susceptible to BPs. Our results highlight the importance of noise consideration in QNN training and propose a strategic approach to observable selection to improve QNN performance in noisy quantum computing environments thus contributing to the advancement of quantum machine learning research.

Parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) have emerged as a foundational element in the development and applications of quantum algorithms. However, when initialized with random parameter values, PQCs often exhibit barren plateaus (BP). These plateaus, characterized by vanishing gradients with an increasing number of qubits, hinder optimization in quantum algorithms. In this paper, we analyze the impact of state-of-the-art parameter initialization strategies from classical machine learning in random PQCs from the aspect of BP phenomenon. Our investigation encompasses a spectrum of initialization techniques, including random, Xavier (both normal and uniform variants), He, LeCun, and Orthogonal methods. Empirical assessment reveals a pronounced reduction in variance decay of gradients across all these methodologies compared to the randomly initialized PQCs. Specifically, the Xavier initialization technique outperforms the rest, showing a 62\% improvement in variance decay compared to the random initialization. The He, Lecun, and orthogonal methods also display improvements, with respective enhancements of 32\%, 28\%, and 26\%. This compellingly suggests that the adoption of these existing initialization techniques holds the potential to significantly amplify the training efficacy of Quantum Neural Networks (QNNs), a subclass of PQCs. Demonstrating this effect, we employ the identified techniques to train QNNs for learning the identity function, effectively mitigating the adverse effects of BPs. The training performance, ranked from the best to the worst, aligns with the variance decay enhancement as outlined above. This paper underscores the role of tailored parameter initialization in mitigating the BP problem and eventually enhancing the training dynamics of QNNs.

In this paper, we propose a framework to study the combined effect of several factors that contribute to the barren plateau problem in quantum neural networks (QNNs), which is a critical challenge in quantum machine learning (QML). These factors include data encoding, qubit entanglement, and ansatz expressibility. To investigate this joint effect in a real-world context, we focus on hybrid quantum neural networks (HQNNs) for multi-class classification. Our proposed framework aims to analyze the impact of these factors on the training landscape of HQNNs. Our findings show that the barren plateau problem in HQNNs is dependent on the expressibility of the underlying ansatz and the type of data encoding. Furthermore, we observe that entanglement also plays a role in the barren plateau problem. By evaluating the performance of HQNNs with various evaluation metrics for classification tasks, we provide recommendations for different constraint scenarios, highlighting the significance of our framework for the practical success of QNNs.

The barren plateau problem in quantum neural networks (QNNs) is a significant challenge that hinders the practical success of QNNs. In this paper, we introduce residual quantum neural networks (ResQNets) as a solution to address this problem. ResQNets are inspired by classical residual neural networks and involve splitting the conventional QNN architecture into multiple quantum nodes, each containing its own parameterized quantum circuit, and introducing residual connections between these nodes. Our study demonstrates the efficacy of ResQNets by comparing their performance with that of conventional QNNs and plain quantum neural networks (PlainQNets) through multiple training experiments and analyzing the cost function landscapes. Our results show that the incorporation of residual connections results in improved training performance. Therefore, we conclude that ResQNets offer a promising solution to overcome the barren plateau problem in QNNs and provide a potential direction for future research in the field of quantum machine learning.

Harnessing quantum mechanics properties, quantum computers have the potential to outperform classical computers in many applications and are envisioned to affect various aspects of our society. Different approaches are being explored for building such computers. One of such potential approaches is Measurement based quantum computation (MBQC), introduced by Raussendorf and Briegel in 2001. In MBQC a large number of qubits are prepared in a highly entangled clusters, called cluster states. The required quantum computation is then performed by a sequence of measurements. Cluster states are being physically realized using continuous variables (CV) and discrete variables (DV) approaches. CV-based approaches can be further categorized as Frequency domain multiplexing (FDM), Time domain multiplexing (TDM), Spatial domain multiplexing (SDM) and hybrid. We discuss and compare these approaches in detail. We also discuss cluster states generation in DV and report some recent results where photons and superconducting qubits are used.
