Zum ersten Male seit ihrem Bestehen veranstaltete die IGU-Arbeitsgruppe „Co-ordinating Committee for Periglacial Research“ ein Symposium mit einer Feldkampagne jenseits des Polarkreises in Nordfinnland und Nordnorwegen. Das Thema dieser Tagung, die von R. Ähman (Lund), M. Seppälä (Helsinki) und H. Svensson (Kopenhagen) vorbereitet und geleitet wurde und an der 34 auf dem Gebiet der Periglaziärforschung tätige Wissenschaftler aus 13 Nationen teilnahmen, behandelte die Periglaziärerscheinungen im nördlichen Fennoskandien. Diese Fragestellung stand im Mittelpunkt der Exkursionen, die von Ivalo am Inrai-See ihren Ausgang nahmen, in die Umgebung der Forschungsstation Kevo im Utsjoki-Tal, zur Varanger-Halbinsel und entlang der großen nordnorwegischen Fjorde (Tanafjord, Laksefjord, Porsangenfjord) in das Gebiet um Lakselv im inneren Porsangenfjord führten.
