We have studied the spin polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in heavy ion collisions at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV carried out at RHIC and LHC colliders. We have calculated the mean spin vector at local thermodynamic equilibrium, including all known first-order terms in the gradients of the thermo-hydrodynamic fields, assuming that the hadronization hypersurface has a uniform temperature. We have also included the feed-down contributions to the polarization of $\Lambda$ stemming from the decays of polarized $\Sigma^*$ and $\Sigma^0$ hyperons. The obtained results are in good agreement with the data. In general, the component of the spin vector along the global angular momentum, orthogonal to the reaction plane, shows strong sensitivity to the initial longitudinal flow velocity. Furthermore, the longitudinal component of the spin vector turns out to be very sensitive to the bulk viscosity of the plasma at the highest LHC energy. Therefore, the azimuthal dependence of spin polarization can effectively constrain the initial hydrodynamic conditions and the transport coefficients of the Quark Gluon Plasma., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We present a new model for jet quenching in a quark gluon plasma (QGP). The jet energy loss has two steps. The initial jet parton with a high virtuality loses energy by a perturbative vacuum parton shower modified by medium interactions until it becomes on shell. Subsequent energy loss originates from elastic and radiative collisions with the medium constituents. Coherency of the radiative collisions is achieved by starting with virtual gluons that act as field dressing of the initial jet parton. These are formed according to a Gunion-Bertsch seed. The QCD version of the LPM effect is obtained by increasing the phase of the virtual gluons through elastic scatterings with the medium. Above a phase threshold, the virtual gluons will be formed and can produce coherent radiation themselves. The model has been implemented in a Monte Carlo code and is validated by successfully reproducing the BDMPS-Z prediction for the energy spectrum of radiated gluons in a static medium. Results for the more realistic case, in which the assumptions of the BDMPS-Z approach are released, are also shown. We investigate the influence of various parameters on the energy spectrum and the transverse momentum distribution, such as the in-medium quark masses, the energy transfer in the recoil process, and the phase accumulation criteria, especially for low and intermediate energy gluons.

We present directed flow of protons and pions, as well as mean polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar\Lambda$ hyperons computed for Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5...19.6$ GeV in MUFFIN model. MUlti Fluid simulation for Fast IoN collisions, or MUFFIN, is a state-of-the-art 3-fluid dynamic model for simulating heavy-ion collisions in the region from a few to a hundred GeV center-of-mass energy. Whereas MUFFIN succeeds to reproduce basic observables in the collision energy range of interest, the slope of the directed flow at mid-rapidity is much steeper as compared to the data, it has unclear EoS dependence and final-state hadronic cascade affects this observable significantly. The excitation function of the $\Lambda$ polarization shows a significant splitting between polarizations of $\Lambda$ and $\bar\Lambda$, which challenges a widespread interpretation that the splitting is affected mainly by the late-stage magnetic field., Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of Quark Matter 2023 conference (Houston, TX, 3-9 September 2023). 4 pages, 3 figures

A novel three-fluid dynamical model for simulations of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC Beam Energy Scan programme, called MUFFIN, has been developed. The novelty consists of modular inclusion of the Equation of State, use of hyperbolic coordinates that allow to simulate higher collision energies, and fluctuating initial conditions. The model reproduces rapidity and $p_t$ spectra of collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7.7 to 62.4 GeV. We present a new model for jet quenching from coherent radiation in a brick medium. The jet energy loss is simulated as a perturbative final-state vacuum parton shower followed by a medium-induced shower originating from elastic and radiative collisions with the medium constituents. Coherency is achieved by starting with trial gluons that act as field dressing of the initial jet parton. These are formed according to a Gunion-Bertsch seed. Above a phase threshold, the trial gluons will be realised and can produce coherent radiation themselves. In particular, we show the influence of various parameters on the energy spectrum and transverse momentum distribution, such as the in-medium quark masses, the energy transfer in the recoil process, and the phase accumulation criteria, especially for low and intermediate energy gluons. The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. We have developed a next-generation hybrid event-by-event three-fluid hydrodynamic model, suitable for simulations of heavy-ion collisions in the energy range from few up to tens of GeV per colliding NN pair. At such energies the interpenetration time of the nuclei is of the same order as the lifetime of the system, however this model treats the initial phase hydrodynamically. Thanks to that it is more sensitive to the Equation of State than 1-fluid models with initial states being parametrised or generated by transport approach. Hence, our model is well designed for simulations at collision energies, at which matter in vicinity of the QCD critical endpoint is expected. The polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperon has become an important probe of the Quark-Gluon Plasma produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Recently, it has been found that polarization receives a substantial contribution from a local equilibrium term proportional to the symmetric derivative of the four-temperature vector, the thermal shear tensor. We show that, at very high energies, this term can restore the agreement between the experimental measurements and the predictions of the hydrodynamic model, provided that the hadronization hypersurface is isothermal. We review the theoretical derivation of this new term, discuss numerical computations at RHIC and LHC energies, and compare them with the experimental data. State-of-the-art fluid dynamical simulations of relativistic heavy-ion collisions employ initial state models which result in a rather strong radial flow. In order to fit the experimental observables, a non-negligible bulk viscosity of the QGP and/or hadronic matter is required. We examine modern parametrizations of the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio $\zeta/s$ used in recent fluid dynamical simulations, and explore the relative magnitude of the associated bulk viscous corrections in space-time, for Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV LHC energy with a state-of-the-art initial state provided by TRENTo model. It turns out that, at a typical particlization hypersurface, the effect of bulk viscosity out-competes the one of shear viscosity, and in a significantly large part of the space-time volume, the bulk pressure strongly counteracts the equilibrium pressure, thus the effective pressure approaches zero. Heavy-ion collisions at varying collision energies provide access to different regions of the QCD phase diagram. In particular collisions at intermediate energies are promising candidates to experimentally identify the postulated first order phase transition and critical end point. While heavy-ion collisions at low and high collision energies are theoretically well described by transport approaches and hydrodynamics+transport hybrid approaches, respectively, intermediate energy collisions remain a challenge. In this work, a modular hybrid approach, the SMASH-vHLLE-hybrid coupling 3+1D viscous hydrodynamics (vHLLE) to hadronic transport (SMASH), is introduced. It is validated and subsequently applied in Au+Au/Pb+Pb collisions between $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 4.3 GeV and $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200.0 GeV to study the rapidity and transverse mass distributions of identified particles as well as excitation functions for $\mathrm{dN}/\mathrm{d}y|_{y = 0}$ and $\langle p_\mathrm{T} \rangle$. A good agreement with experimental measurements is obtained, including the baryon stopping dynamics. The transition from a Gaussian rapidity spectrum of protons at lower energies to the double-hump structure at high energies is reproduced. The centrality and energy dependence of charged particle $v_2$ is also described reasonably well. This work serves as a basis for further studies, e.g. systematic investigations of different equations of state or transport coefficients.

A hybrid model that employs the hadron-string transport model UrQMD and the (3+1)D relativistic viscous hydrodynamic code vHLLE, is used to investigate the beam energy dependence of the correlation coefficient $\rho(v^{2}_{2},[p_{T}])$ between the average transverse momentum $[p_{T}]$ of hadrons emitted in an event and the square of the anisotropic flow coefficient $v_2^2$. For Au+Au collisions, the model predicts characteristic patterns for the energy and event-shape dependence of the variances for $[p_{T}]$ and $v_n^2$ (${\rm Var}([p_T])$ and ${\rm Var}(v_2^2)$), and the covariance of $v_n^2$ and $[p_{T}]$ (${\rm cov}(v_{2}^{2},[p_T])$), consistent with the attenuation effects of the specific shear viscosity $\eta/s$. In contrast, $\rho(v^{2}_{2},[p_{T}])$ is predicted to be insensitive to the beam energy but sensitive to the initial-state geometry of the collisions. These observations suggest that a precise set of measurements for ${\rm Var}([p_T])$, ${\rm Var}(v_2^2)$, ${\rm cov}(v_{2}^{2},[p_T])$ and $\rho(v^{2}_{2},[p_{T}])$ as a function of beam-energy and event-shape, could aid precision extraction of the temperature and baryon chemical-potential dependence of $\eta/s$ from the wealth of Au+Au data obtained in the RHIC beam energy scan., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted for publication

We present the first calculation of longitudinal decorrelation of anisotropic flow at RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) energies using event-by-event viscous hydrodynamic model (vHLLE), with two different initial states (GLISSANDO2 and UrQMD) and hadronic cascade. In the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program, gold nuclei are collided with different collision energies in the range from few to 62.4 GeV. The goals of the program are to explore the onset of QGP creation, locate the critical point of QCD and study dense baryon matter. We report on the first application of Monte Carlo Glauber (GLISSANDO2) and T$_{\rm R}$ENTo $p=0$ initial states extended to 3D for event-by-event viscous fluid dynamic (vHLLE) with hadronic cascade modelling of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=27$ and 62.4 GeV, which is the upper region of RHIC BES energies. The initial states are extended into both the longitudinal direction and for finite baryon density using simple ans\"atze. The full energy and baryon charge counting in the initial states is implemented. We show the reproduction of elliptic flow, at both collision energies and with both initial states. We compare it also to the results obtained with UrQMD initial state. Furthermore, we show the results for rapidity decorrelation of elliptic flow $r_2$ at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=27$ and 200 GeV from the same setup of hydrodynamic calculations with the 3D Monte Carlo Glauber and UrQMD initial states. Heavy-ion collisions covering a wide range of collision energies provide a vast amount of observables characterizing the properties of strongly-interacting matter. In particular collisions towards the high baryon-density regime of the QCD phase-diagram have become of interest to study the postulated first order phase transition and to locate a possible critical end point. In this work, the SMASH-vHLLE-hybrid is presented as a novel hybrid model to theoretically describe such heavy-ion collisions. In addition, the SMASH hadron resonance gas equation of state is introduced. The accuracy of the latter is shown to be of fundamental importance in order to conserve energy, baryon number and electric charge throughout the different stages of the hybrid model. Furthermore, the impact of an inaccurate equation of state on final state observables is discussed. This work constitutes a first validation of the SMASH-vHLLE-hybrid in terms of conservation laws and excitation functions. Only a fraction of all $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons detected in heavy ion collisions are produced from the hot and dense matter directly at the hadronization. These hyperons are called the {\em primary} hyperons. The rest of the hyperons are products of the decays of heavier hyperon states, which in turn are produced at the hadronization. As such, the polarization of only primary hyperons can be described with the formulae introduced in Sect. 8. For the rest of the hyperons, the polarization transfer in the decays has to be computed, and convoluted with the polarization of the mother hyperon. In this chapter, a derivation of the polarization transfer coefficients, as well as the computation of the mean polarization of all $\Lambda$ hyperons detected in the experiment, is presented. Decorrelation of the elliptic flow in rapidity is calculated within a hybrid approach which includes event-by-event viscous fluid dynamics and final state hadronic cascade model. The simulations are performed for Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass collision energies of 27 and 200 GeV per nucleon pair, as well as various colliding systems at 72 GeV per nucleon pair. Initial conditions determined by an extended Monte Carlo Glauber model show better agreement with experimental data than initial conditions from the UrQMD transport model. We show how the observed decorrelation is connected with the decorrelation of initial state spatial anisotropies. Fluid dynamic approach is a workhorse for modelling collective dynamics in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The approach has been successful in describing various features of the momentum distributions of hadrons produced in the heavy-ion collisions, such as $p_T$ spectra, flow coefficients $v_n$ etc. As such, the description of the phenomenon of polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in heavy-ion collisions has to be incorporated into the hydrodynamic approach. We start this chapter by introducing different definitions of vorticity in relativistic fluid dynamics. Then we present a derivation of the polarization of spin 1/2 fermions in the relativistic fluid. The latter is directly applied to compute the spin polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperons, which are produced from the hot and dense medium, described with fluid dynamics. It is followed by a review of the existing calculations of global or local polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in different hydrodynamic models of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the energies of RHIC Beam Energy Scan program with fluid dynamic approach poses several challenges, one of which being a complex geometry and a longer duration of the pre-hydrodynamic stage. Therefore, existing fluid dynamic models for heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC Beam Energy Scan energies rely on rather complex initial states, such as UrQMD cascade or multi-fluid dynamics. In this study, we show that functionally simpler, non-dynamical initial states can be employed for the fluid dynamical simulations of Au-Au collisions at $\mbox{$\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$}=27$ and 62.4~GeV. We adapt the initial states based on Monte Carlo Glauber model (GLISSANDO 2) and $\sqrt{T_A T_B}$ ansatz based on reduced thickness (T$_{\rm R}$ENTo $p=0$), extended into the longitudinal direction and finite baryon density. We find that both initial states, when coupled to a 3D event-by-event viscous fluid dynamic + cascade model, result in an overall fair reproduction of basic experimental data: pseudorapidity distributions, transverse momentum spectra and elliptic flow, at both collision energies. This is a rather surprising, given that the $\sqrt{T_A T_B}$ ansatz is functionally similar to the EKRT and IP-Glasma models, which are successful at much larger energies and rely on a partonic picture of the initial state., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.C

We report on a benchmark calculation of the in-medium radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons within the EPOS3-Jet framework. The radiative energy loss is based on an extension of the Gunion-Bertsch matrix element for a massive projectile and a massive radiated gluon. On top of that, the coherence (LPM effect) is implemented by assigning a formation phase to the trial radiated gluons in a fashion similar to the approach in JHEP 07 (2011), 118, by Zapp, Stachel and Wiedemann. In a calculation with a simplified radiation kernel, we reproduce the radiation spectrum reported in the approach above. The radiation spectrum produces the LPM behaviour $dI/d\omega\propto\omega^{-1/2}$ up to an energy $\omega=\omega_c$, when the formation length of radiated gluons becomes comparable to the size of the medium. Beyond $\omega_c$, the radiation spectrum shows a characteristic suppression due to a smaller probability for a gluon to be formed in-medium. Next, we embed the radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons into a more realistic "parton gun" calculation, where a stream of hard partons at high initial energy $E_\text{ini}=100$ GeV and initial virtuality $Q^2=E^2$ passes through a box of QGP medium with a constant temperature. At the end of the box evolution, the partons are hadronized using Pythia 8, and the jets are reconstructed with the FASTJET package. We find that the full jet energy loss in such scenario approaches a ballpark value reported by the ALICE collaboration. EPOS3-Jet is an integrated framework for jet modelling in heavy ion collisions, where the initial hard (jet) partons are produced along with soft (medium) partons in the initial state EPOS approach. The jet partons then propagate in the hydrodynamically expanding medium. The energy and momentum lost by the jet partons is added to the hydrodynamic medium via the source terms. The full evolution proceeds in a concurrent mode, without separating hydrodynamic and jet parts. Central lead-lead collisions at the LHC energies may pose a particular challenge for jet identification as multiple jets are produced per each collision event. We simulate the jet evolution in central Pb-Pb events at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ GeV collision energy with EPOS3 initial state, which typically contains multiple hard scatterings in each event. Therefore the partons from different jets have a significant chance to overlap in momentum space. We find that 30% of the jets with $p_\perp > 50$ GeV, identified by the standard anti-$k_\perp$ jet finding algorithm with jet cone size R=0.3, contain `intruder' particles from overlapping generator-level jets. This fraction increases with increasing beam energy and increasing R. The reconstructed momentum of the jet differs from that of the modelled jet by the loss due to jet partons which are outside of the jet cone and by the gain due to intruder partons. The sum of both may be positive or negative. These intruder partons particularly affect the radial jet momentum distribution because they contribute mostly at large angles $\Delta r$ with respect to the jet centre. The study stresses the importance of the jet overlap effect emerging in central lead-lead collisions at the LHC energies, while being negligible in peripheral PbPb or $p$Pb/$pp$ collisions., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures; version accepted for Physical Review C

The EPOS-HQ model is a framework designed for predicting heavy-flavor observables both in p-p, p-A and A-A collisions. It results from the integration of the MC$@_s$HQ and EPOS3 codes and should supersede predictions made with each of these two. In this contribution, we briefly present the new ingredients of the EPOS-HQ model as well as some preliminary results. The energy-loss of hard probes within the hot and dense medium of a quark gluon plasma (QGP) can be described by theoretical models based on radiative energy loss as well as combinations of collisional and radiative energy loss. In a search for observables that allow to disentangle these energy-loss mechanisms, we introduced a set of effective models that allows to investigate the consequences on jets of both types of jet-medium interactions within a consistent framework. We particularly studied angular jet-broadening via angular two-particle correlations. We report on the first results for jet observables from a time-like parton cascade integrated with hydrodynamic evolution within the EPOS3-HQ framework. The hard (jet) partons are produced along with soft partons in the initial state EPOS approach. The soft partons, represented by strings, melt into a thermalized medium which is described by a 3 dimensional event-by-event viscous hydrodynamic approach. The jet partons then propagate in the hydrodynamically expanding medium. The total jet energy gets progressively `degraded' when the partons reaching a thermal energy scale are melted into the hydrodynamic medium via the source terms. The full evolution proceeds in a parallel mode, without separating the thermalized and jet parts. STAR collaboration at RHIC has recently measured the polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in non-central heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program. The magnitude of the polarization was found to decrease from few percents at the lowest BES energies to $\approx0.2$% at the top RHIC energy. The polarization signal has been reproduced in different hydrodynamic calculations assuming a thermodynamic spin-vorticity coupling mechanism at the Cooper-Frye hypersurface. In this work an extension of our existing calculations of the $\Lambda$ polarization in the RHIC BES program to the top RHIC and 2.76 TeV LHC energies is presented. The longitudinal component of the $\Lambda$ polarization, which is the dominant component of the polarization at the LHC energies, is discussed. In this note we discuss the rapidity dependence of the initial and final conditions for hydrodynamic evolution as well as the resulting basic hadronic observables in heavy ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=72$ GeV in the framework of a viscous hydro+cascade model vHLLE+UrQMD. The resulting rapidity dependences are driven to a big extent by the initial state, which is simulated with the UrQMD cascade. The results can serve as a prediction for future experiments such as the AFTER@LHC or the BES-II program at STAR., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

In hydrodynamic approach to relativistic heavy ion collisions, hadrons with nonzero spin, produced out of the hydrodynamic medium, can acquire polarization via spin-vorticity thermodynamic coupling mechanism. The hydrodynamical quantity steering the polarization is the thermal vorticity, that is minus the antisymmetric part of the gradient of four-temperature field. Based on this mechanism there have been several calculations in hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic models for non-central heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan energy range, showing that the amount of polarization of produced $\Lambda$ hyperons ranges from few percents to few permille, and decreases with collision energy. We report on an extension of our existing calculation of global $\Lambda$ polarization in UrQMD+vHLLE model to full RHIC and LHC energies, and discuss the component of polarization along the beam direction, which is the dominant one at high energies., Comment: proceedings of Strangeness in Quark Matter 2017 conference. 4 pages, 2 figures

We determine the probability distributions of shear viscosity over the entropy density ratio $\eta/s$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6, 39$, and $62.4$ GeV, using Bayesian inference and Gaussian process emulators for a model-to-data statistical analysis that probes the full input parameter space of a transport+viscous hydrodynamics hybrid model. We find the most likely value of $\eta/s$ to be larger at smaller $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, although the uncertainties still allow for a constant value between 0.10 and 0.15 for the investigated collision energy range., Comment: 44 pages, 34 figures. We investigate the collision energy dependence of $\eta/s$ in a transport + viscous hydrodynamics hybrid model. A Bayesian analysis is performed on RHIC beam energy scan data for $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6,39,$ and $62.4$ GeV. The resulting posterior probability distributions for the model parameters show a preference for a larger value of $\eta/s$ at $19.6$ GeV compared to $62.4$ GeV, indicating dependence on baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Collective flow as a consequence of hydrodynamical evolution in heavy ion collisions is intensively studied by theorists and experimentalists to understand the behavior of hot quark matter. Due to their large mass, heavy ions suffer collective effects even at low (SPS) or intermediate energies (RHIC). In case of light systems such as (anti)proton-proton interactions, collective effects was not expected. Within a global model such as EPOS, where light and heavy systems are treated using the same physics, it appears that Tevatron data are better described if a flow is introduced. We present a second-order upwind numerical scheme for equations of relativistic hydrodynamics with a source term. A new non-linear Riemann solver is constructed. Solution of a Riemann problem on a cells boundary is based on exact relations in case of zero tangential velocities. In this sense our solver is "exact". In case of non-zero tangential velocities a reasonable approximation is made that allows to avoid solution of very complicated exact equations. The scheme is tested on several one- and three-dimensional solutions demonstrating a good performance for both strong shocks and strong rarefactions., Comment: 38 pages, submitted to J.Comp. Phys
