Therefore, this practicum project aims to establish the theoretical foundations of Hip Hop interior design, a novel proposal which is informed by Hip Hop and the associated Hip Hop architecture movement. The identified theory will guide the design of The Toronto Centre for Hip Hop, a community centre for adolescents living in a disenfranchised inner-city neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario. Towards this pursuit, context is fundamental to situate Hip Hop within its distinct historical, social, and cultural emergence. The history of American racial segregation is unravelled to clarify the role architects, designers, and city planners played in the spatial and architectural marginalization of Black people. This bigoted construction was decisive in forming the inner city or ghetto, which eventually situated post-industrial New York as the incubator for Hip Hop to emerge. Hip Hop is then analyzed from its history to its various expressions, conclusively positioning it as a culture, as opposed to merely a musical genre. This allows for its connection to space and place, exploring how space is not universal or equal to all, substantiating the pursuit of Hip Hop architecture. Subsequently, theories from the developing Hip Hop architecture movement are reviewed to connect Hip Hop with built form, conclusively supporting the proposed idea of Hip Hop interior design. The ultimate goal of this practicum project is to contemplate a new approach to interior design that focuses primarily on revitalizing marginalized inner-city communities through the ideologies of Hip Hop. Through the understanding of the anthropology of undesired buildings as well as the theory of collective memory, the methods and strategies to properly adaptively reuse these existing buildings can breathe new life into the architecture and place an important reminder of its past. The adaptive reuse of the House of the Wannsee Conference into the Beth Wannsee Synagogue can answer the questions of (a) how can a building embedded with the memories of hate be repurposed into a beneficial site?; (b) what functional typology can be housed in this site?; (c) and who do we reuse these site for?

These attitudes include an embrace of cultural heritage as a crucial part of a creative and authentic design process, a demand for design that supports sensory experience, and a desire to provoke physiological, cognitive, and aesthetic fulfillment in the end user. The literature is engaged from an existential perspective to inform conceptual innovations in interior design, specifically focusing on the human condition. The findings consolidate to determine how interior design can a) utilize human motivation to create effective and meaningful design strategies; b) assist in the promotion and preservation of tangible and intangible heritage; and c) translate and sustain the experiential nature of wine, and its sensory and aesthetic phenomena, via spatial experience.

Healthcare workers have some of the highest rates of PTSD and PTSD-associated mental health issues among career professionals. Previous approaches to address these issues have not provided long-term solutions and have fallen apart in times of high stress, as exemplified by the SARS-Coronavirus pandemic, which has exacerbated these issues even further. With a new understanding of mental health guidelines and practices, this practicum proposes re-imagining a mental health treatment centre that embraces a holistic approach to treatment and care. It pairs unconventional and innovative modern psychiatric treatments such as Nature Assisted Healing and Psychedelic Psychotherapy with established design theories, like Biophilic and Salutogenic Design, to create a centre where the root causes of the mental health issues can be treated, rather than simply the symptoms.

For this reason, this practicum focuses on the typology of a health and wellness centre and how enhancing the design of these centres through accessible, inclusive and active design strategies. Health and wellness centres are non-medical, multifunctioning facilities that promote physical, mental and social health. These centres, when designed correctly, have the potential to aid in economic growth of a community and improve sustainable health management. Our social environments are constantly changing and design must to be able to adapt to meet societal standards. It is crucial that the design of these spaces accommodate all users, regardless of gender identity, physical ability, age, culture or otherwise. This Master of Interior Design practicum explores The Flipped Classroom model to propose the re-design of a hypothetical high school environment for students grades seven to twelve. The Flipped Classroom model is a strategy that ‘flips’ or ‘reverses’ the traditional structure of class and homework. The strategy was chosen as an approach to re-envision learning through the built environment in order to create greater learning opportunities, more active learning, and increased connections to community. The topic looks at theories related to higher-order thinking, learner-centered environments, flipped roles & feedback exchange, as well as motivation. Strategies were derived and applied to the built environment through a process of interior design stages. The selected site for modeling this design is the Elmwood High School located at 505 Chalmers Ave in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The practicum explored the benefits of art through its identity as a biological behavior, educational experience, and therapeutic expression. Through these definitions of art, the actual process of making becomes significant to the development of adolescents. Due to the project location and surrounding community, the makerspace acknowledged and incorporated Indigenous land-based art making. Unlike many current makerspaces focusing on advanced technology, this practicum focuses on the humanely intrinsic need to handmake, as a way for adolescents to connect and communicate with one another. In support of this concept, The Constructivist Learning Theory was explored, promoting learning about art through direct experiences, or hands-on learning. Inspired by the field of art therapy, strategies of creative art making were explored. An approach known as the Expressive Therapies Continuum created a design concept for the stages in which adolescents process the art created within the space. Such strategies of creative art making informed the approach to art making activities and wellness opportunities. The practicum considers the needs of developing adolescents by providing the opportunity to build trusted connections and a sense of identity in a comfortably engaging environment.

To build a supportive environment it is important to understand the specific needs of an individual or group and how the physical environment can impact health. This practicum project proposes a center that goes beyond the use of medication to support those who suffer from depression using alternative therapies and applications to help the guests relax. A main goal for the center is to remove the hurdle of stigma that surrounds mental health. By offering a safe and comforting environment the aim is to encourage those who have depression to reach out and begin a treatment plan tailored to their personal goals. Offering traditional therapy approaches paired with alternative and supporting therapies and an aesthetic of natural elements and comfort. The intent of this practicum project was to design a pro-social space to encourage network building and to bring together people experiencing similar issues while working towards becoming a healthier individual. The goals of this project were to offer those who struggle with their mental health a resource center and place of connection for these individuals to help reduce the risk of suicide.

By understanding each learning style, and exploring alternative ways to design interior spaces that provide flexibility, this practicum will promote inclusivity to each child. Allowing the student to have some control and personalization over their school experience and environment creates a sense of pride and positive involvement that translates into their learning.
