1. Environmental and Anthropogenic Factors Shape the Snow Microbiome and Antibiotic Resistome

Abstract

Winter tourism can generate environmental pollution and affect microbial ecology in mountain ecosystems. This could stimulate the development of antibiotic resistance in snow and its dissemination through the atmosphere and through snow melting. Despite these potential impacts, the effect of winter tourism on the snow antibiotic resistome remains to be elucidated. In this study, snow samples subjected to different levels of anthropogenic activities and surrounding forest were obtained from the Sudety Mountains in Poland to evaluate the impact of winter tourism on snow bacteria using a metagenomic approach. Bacterial community composition was determined by the sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene and the composition of the antibiotic resistome was explored by metagenomic sequencing. Whereas environmental factors were the main drivers of bacterial community and antibiotic resistome composition in snow, winter tourism affected resistome composition in sites with similar environmental conditions. Several antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) showed a higher abundance in sites subjected to human activities. This is the first study to show that anthropogenic activities may influence the antibiotic resistome in alpine snow. Our results highlight the need to survey antibiotic resistance development in anthropogenically polluted sites.

Abstract

The Karkonosze National Park is affected by long-distance metal air transport of anthropogenic contamination as well as by tourist activity. Therefore, concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were evaluated in soil as well as in vital and non-vital fronds of Athyrium distentifolium Opiz collected in the middle of the growing season from glacial cirques in the Karkonosze. Additionally, fronds of the same species turning brown in autumn were collected from the same sampling sites. The health of ferns was impacted by the contents of Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in fronds, which may indicate that A. distentifolium uses elements accumulated in its tissues as defence against pathogens. Individuals from higher altitudes contained higher concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Fe and Pb than those from lower altitudes. Autumn fronds of A. distentifolium contained a significantly higher concentration of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb than vital summer fronds, which may indicate sequestration of these elements in senescing fronds probably to remove potentially harmful metals. Non-vital ferns were a better accumulator of Pb than vital ones, while both types of ferns accumulated Mn in a similar way. Abstract

The paper presents the results of field research on the occurrence of Succisella inflexa in Kampinos National Park, conducted in 2004–2015. Its stations are characterized and its distribution is given. The populations were mainly concentrated in the eastern part of the park. Forty-five stations have been reported, two of them most likely historical. They were most often in open sedge and meadow, and less frequently in thin shrub and young forests. The population sizes ranged from single specimens to many thousands.

Abstract

Allium scorodoprasum (Amaryllidaceae) is a vulnerable, red-listed species in Poland, where it has an uneven distribution. In the southwestern part of the country it has not been confirmed since 1961–1975 in the majority of the former areas of its occurrence. The paper describes 48 localities of A. scorodoprasum and provides data on population size, occupied habitats, plant communities and threats in the section of the Oder Valley between Oława, Wrocław and Brzeg Dolny in Lower Silesia (SW Poland).

11. Nowe stanowisko Salix myrtilloides (Salicaceae) w Kampinoskim Parku Narodowym

Abstract

In April 2014, a new locality of Salix myrtilloides was found in the eastern part of Kampinos National Park in the abandoned village of Wyględy Górne (Leszno municipality, Warszawa Zachód District; GPS: 52°17′35.4″N, 20°41′41.5″E). The population consisted of 17 stems scattered in an area of 30 m2 within a poor fen that developed between small dunes. The main threat to the species at this locality is the poor quantity of these plants, which makes the population susceptible to sudden changes in environmental conditions. Another threat is biocenotic succession and the associated increase in shading from shrubs and perennials.

15. The Stock of Organic Carbon in Forest Soils in Phytocenosis of the Continental Mixed Coniferous Forest in Kampinos National Park

Abstract

In this study physical and chemical analyses of soils were conducted in four areas of the habitat fresh mixed coniferous forest typical of the Kampinos National Park (20% forest area KPN). An attempt was made to evaluate the stock of organic carbon in every genetic horizon and the whole profiles of selected soils, and one counted the indicator ITGL (FSTI - Forest Soil Trophizm Index). In the examined soils, the particle size distributions, the content and ability to store organic carbon was analyzed as well as the amount of total nitrogen, C:N ratio, soil reaction and sorption properties. The highest content and stock of organic carbon was noted in the Brunic Arenosol (Distric) Postagricultural. In the investigated soils, the reserve of the organic carbon is accumulated in almost equal proportional shares, dividing soil into horizontal organic and mineral parts.
