Abstract

Jamu is Indonesian traditional herbal medicine that is still consumed nowadays to treat a variety of medical conditions. Jamu contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as lead, a common environmental pollutant, can cause various health issues even in trace concentrations. This study evaluated a technique for determining lead contents in jamu utilizing laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at a wavelength of 355 nm, with a pulse duration of 10 ns, and maximum pulse energy of 15 mJ, was used for plasma generation on the sample surface under atmospheric pressure. The lead spectral intensity in plasma emission spectra was correlated with the lead concentration using a linear regression model. The actual concentrations and projected values produced by the model showed good agreement with the R2 of the model was 0.998. The detection limit obtained from the model was 99.38 ppm. These results indicated that laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy could quickly and accurately identify heavy metals in Indonesian traditional medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A series of experiments are conducted for the study of time-dependent variations of major emission from the metastable excited He generated in various experimental conditions. Different Nd:YAG laser pulse widths and pulse energies, as well as purity of the He gas, are employed for studying quenching effects including the use of a Cu target in an experimental condition for spectrochemical analysis. It is found that in all cases investigated, the metastable excited He atom (He*) associated with the triplet He I 587.5 nm emission line has the unquestionable dominance over another triplet emission line of He I 388.8 nm and the singlet He I 667.8 nm emission. Further analysis of the present data combined with the results of previous studies suggested that the energy transfer between He atoms via the Penning-like collision-induced energy transfer process has so far remained less than appropriately addressed. It is strongly argued and demonstrated in this work that this underlying physical process is likely the moving force leading to the repeated He ionizations responsible for the self-propelled multiple amplification of the triplet He I 587.5 nm emission intensity particularly at the early stage of the shock wave formation. This study has convincingly demonstrated that the Penning-like collision-induced energy transfer process can also effectively take place between He* and the ablated atoms, implying its usefulness for spectrochemical laser-induced plasma spectroscopy analysis. Abstract

A study is conducted on the detailed static and dynamic characteristics of plasma and the resulting emission spectral qualities generated by a femtosecond (fs) laser irradiation compared with those produced by nanosecond (ns) laser irradiation at a reduced ambient air pressure of 0.65 kPa. It is shown that both plasmas feature a tiny primary and a much larger secondary plasmas, which share the same hemispherical shape of roughly the same size at the appropriately chosen pulse energies. The resulted emission spectra in both cases exhibit one of the shock wave characteristics marked by a much stronger Zn triplet than its singlet emission lines. Further measurement of log(r)–log(t) of Cu I 521.8 nm emission line yields a slope of around 0.4, which is in good agreement with Sedov's equation derived for shock wave plasma. While exhibiting similar pressure-dependent emission intensities of Cu and Zn emission lines, the fs induced emission intensities are consistently lower than those induced by ns laser plasma. The estimated average temperature of the ns laser induced plasma (10 200 K) is only slightly higher than that induced by the fs laser (9800 K). The lower integrated emission intensity of fs plasma is related to previously reported lower electron density in fs laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS) and the faster decay of the associated continuum background, implying rapid diminution of ionized atoms and hence lower integrated emission intensity. Therefore, apart from cases demanding minimal surface damages, the simpler and less expensive ns-LIBS should be considered as a more favorable alternative for spectrochemical analysis. However, the applications to surface analysis do show that the fs laser offers higher detection sensitivity. A judicial selection is, therefore, strongly recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We propose and demonstrate a novel one-dimensional nanobeam bandedge laser constituted by self-aligned nanoisland quantum-well (QW) structures. The formation of self-aligned InGaAsP nanoislands sandwiched between two InP claddings is the result of selective removal of QW through wet-etching processes. By controlling wet-etching time, we show a good spatial and spectral overlap between the dielectric mode and the self-aligned nanoisland structures leads to the realization of nanobeam bandedge lasers with low-threshold operations and high slope efficiencies. Optical characterization results indicate a strong correlation between the size of individual nanoisland and the threshold power of our nanobeam bandedge lasers. •A simple methods utilizing a laser-generated air spark to improve the performance of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for quantitative in-situanalysis of high-concentration Al in Ti-Al was demonstrated.•By positioning the tail of the air spark between the sample surface and the outer part of the target plasma, completely free self-reversal Al I 394.40 nm and Al I 396.15 nm emission lines are obtained both for time-resolved and time-integrated measurements.•We successfully obtained a linear calibration curve for high-concentration al in Ti-Al alloy, even using the time-integrated spectrums, which is essentially needed for quantitative in-situanalysis.

Abstract

A time-resolved spectroscopic study is performed by using 125-500 micro-Joule (uJ) ps laser focused directly without the aid of microscope on a Cu plate sample in a variety of low-pressure ambient gases including air, helium and argon. It is shown that the ultrashort uJ laser-induced low-pressure plasma in Ar ambient gas exhibits the typical characteristics of shock wave plasma responsible for the thermal excitation and sharp emission of the analyte atoms. It is found that the highest signal to background (S/B) ratio of about 100 is achieved in 1.3 kPa argon ambient gas and detected with optical multichannel analyzer (OMA) gate delay of 1 ns and gate width of 50 us. The emission spectra obtained from pure Zn sample show the effective suppression of the ionic emission with ablation energy around and below 500 uJ. The experimental setup is successfully applied to Cr analysis with low detection limit in steel. In particular, its application to C analysis in steel is demonstrated to resolve the long standing problem of overlapping contributions from the neutral and ionic Fe emission. It is further found that an element of high excitation energy such as fluorine (F) can be clearly detected from a non metal teflon sample. Further, its application to alluminum sample containing various concentrations of Mg, Ca, Fe, and Si impurity elements clearly displays the existence of linear calibration lines promising for quantitative analyses in certain dynamical ranges. Finally, in view of the tiny crater sizes of less than 10 um diameter created by the very low ps laser energy, this technique is promising for micrometer resolution mapping of elemental distribution on the sample surface and its depth profiling.

44. In-Situ Lithium Analysis In MgLi Alloys Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy with a Compact Chamber.

Abstract

This study explores the feasibility of in situ Lithium (Li) analysis in Magnesium-Lithium (MgLi) alloys using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). It focuses on two Li emission lines: Li I 670.8 nm (resonance) and Li I 610.4 nm (non-resonance). Comparing characteristics at atmospheric and low pressures, self-reversal signatures are observed in both emission lines at atmospheric pressure, complicating the analysis. Challenges in suppressing self-reversal effect using laser energy and detection window adjustments are noted. To address this, a compact chamber (80 mm×50 mm×50 mm) with adjustable pressure (using a portable vacuum pump) is developed. Lowering the pressure significantly reduces self-reversal effect, particularly for the Li I 610.4 nm line. This makes Li I 610.4 nm more suitable for analyzing high Lithium concentrations in MgLi alloys. Using standard samples, such as LA91 (8 % Li) and LA141 (14 % Li), the study successfully obtains Li I 610.4 nm spectra with proportional Li emission intensities.
